[Bug 1042366] Re: openjdk-7-jre-headless depends on undesirable packages
The policies here are a little vague. because you won't answer all the questions why printing and pc/sc isn't working out of the box, if the recommends are not installed. But that is true for any recommended dependency in any package. The Depends field should be used if the depended-on package is required for the depending package to provide a significant amount of functionality. This is also vague, especially for a large package like the JRE. I think it should be a little more objective; if there is a graceful degradation then the dependencies should go into recommended. [Bug 760344] Re: gvfsd-http not closing tcp connections
The outspoken users here seem to be a little too brash. I think rudeness is uncalled for. Please request the developers for help gently. To the developers, please provide more information before closing the bug. This is a reproducible bug and I think it is a security concern in two ways: 1. By default, connections are being established in the background. This could be used to track users on the server side. 2. These connections are then not getting closed! Even if you don't agree that this is a security issue, this is definitely a valid bug! Also, I am a little confused about what is called upstream bugs v/s ubuntu bugs. If Ubuntu is maintaining a patchset, should bugs be tracked against Ubuntu or upstream? Secondly, is there a Ubuntu patchset involved here? Finally, which packages are affected? If I don't want any of these connections until the bug s fixed, which all packages should I remove from my system? [Bug 760344] Re: gvfsd-http not closing tcp connections
Ok, I looked again at the launchpad headers, and I think I understand the situation better now. Please correct me if I am wrong: The Ubuntu patchset has been updated and will be part of the next release. Hence it has been marked as Fix Committed. (If you click the link Fix Committed it shows a nice legend of what it means). The Invalid tag is only for the upstream package, because probably the upstream package doesn't have the bug anymore. For Precise and Quantal the status is triaged which means the fix hasn't been backported yet. Now a request, can someone apply the patches to Raring atleast? [Bug 1093565] Re: Missing compiz color filter plugin since quantal
The problem seems to be that in compiz 0.9, a lot of code related to OpenGL has changed. More details here: http://wiki.compiz.org/Development/zero- nine/GLESPorting THe part releveant to the color filter plugin is: ARB Assembly Program Usage As GL_ARB_fragment_program is not part of the OpenGL core profile or OpenGL|ES, it was removed in favor of GLSL shaders. Unfortunately, that means that any plugin that uses GLFragment to generate GPU assembly shaders needs to have that part rewritten. That warrants another article as it is a much larger subject. So, someone needs to write a color-filter plugin that doesn't use ARB syntax. It needs to take GLSL shaders as input. For my part, I will try to write a simple plugin that only filters color channels based on a percentage value. For example: if the percentages are (100, 40, 40), then the resultant color would be (r, g*0.4, b*0.4) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1093565 Title: Missing compiz color filter plugin since quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz-plugins-main/+bug/1093565/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1093565] Re: Missing compiz color filter plugin since quantal
I think the importance of this should be more than a wishlist. It's a regression. And from a health point of view, very important for some users. [Bug 743688] Re: Transparent HugePages not enabled in 11.04 kernel
I spent a day compiling a custom kernel with transparent huge pages enabled and set to always use mode (not madvise). I have been using the kernel for the last 24 hours without any trouble. I find my laptop more responsive now. An informal test is that Stellarium's CPU utilisation was 45% in the stock kernel, while it went down to 30% in the custom kernel. For a more formal test, we can use oprofile with these commands: sudo opcontrol --init sudo opcontrol --setup --event DTLB_MISSES:1000 --no-vmlinux sudo opcontrol --start [... run some benchmark here ...] sudo opcontrol --stop sudo opcontrol --dump sudo opreport I am able to run the above commands in both stock and custom kernels and see some numbers. But I need to properly define the benchmark before reporting the numbers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/743688 Title: Transparent HugePages not enabled in 11.04 kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/743688/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 743688] Re: Transparent HugePages not enabled in 11.04 kernel
Thanks Julian. Too bad they made it madvise and not always. There is sysfs entry at /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/ which allows changing the policy at run time, but I am not sure if it can be turned on if the kernel config has madvise.
