I am affected by this problem, too (using certmonger 0.78.6-4 and freeipa 4.4.4-1+b1 on Stretch). Cleanup after the disruption takes about 1.5 minutes and is a tedious clicking chore. Situation 1: When I switch from laptop's internal screen to external, windows move between workspaces. When switching, the workspace-switcher stretches twice as wide as normal, when Ubuntu uses both displays at the same time, "side by side". Guess: It seems that all window positions are stored as a distance from the edge of the first workspace, not in relation to workspace number. Situation 2: After updating and restarting, when relaunching all applications, all the windows open in the workspace that I happen to be at, and not even in the same positions where I left them. Guess: It appears that neither of the responsible bodies, operating system or application, try to remember the locations of windows, and some applications (VLC, document viewer, file browser, image viewer) do not remember anything from their previous state. [Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost
The thermald throttling malfunctioning is interesting. Yes, I believe my laptop is among the several % of portables having cooling issues due to old age and/or on-the-edge design. Like I said, it's a common ailment. Just google "ubuntu laptop overheating" to find out how common. What are we supposed to do to fix that? Approach thermal grease manufacturers about the short life of their products? Solving my problem overhauling my computer is not fixing the problem, it's cover up. Now how about fixing all the ways the kernel is behaving badly in all those overheating machines? Things for software to do in an overheating case (from the original bug report): -use the fan up to its maximum speed (not up to what a designer years ago assumed would probably be enough) -throttle the CPU (thermald troubleshooting in progress) -in a heat emergency, suspend in 1 second instead of shutting down wasting 8 seconds and my session -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1491797 Title: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1491797/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost
It doesn't matter whether this machine has the common old-age ailment of dried thermal grease or not. It's part of normal ageing, so Linux needs to be able to handle it in a non-destructive way. Now Linux is being bullheadedly intolerant to common ailments. It's like a doctor letting an old patient suffer from an indefinitely drug- relievable illness and saying "no, you must buy an expensive life- threatening surgery to correct the underlying root cause". (This parable is apt, because in my computer one insert brass nut has popped off the case and is now spinning in its cavity with the screw, so I would have to do something drastic to even reach the thermal grease.) What kind of an attitude is that to the continual improvement of Linux? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continual_improvement_process Will it ever be smart if you avoid making it smarter? Or have I mistaken about the goal of Linux development? Even my car from 1995 (Nissan) is smarter than this: in the case of overheating, it can protect itself gracefully in many ways; it doesn't kill the engine demanding immediate cooling system repair - it starts doing every possible cooling action and avoiding various heating actions in the order of least annoyance to the user. Then it informs the user about the heat problem, so that they can help. Then it files an error report about having overheated. Quite a lot better than Linux in 2015. The concept of "failing safely" should be applied here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fail-safe Users of these ailing (or just dusty) computers are now suffering of abrupt forced shut downs when they could easily be given lesser evils (noisier fan, slower processing, suspending for a bit every once in a while). All the opportunities to remedy the situation should be taken, because as nothing always works, a low number of actions taken will more likely fail in someone's computer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1491797 Title: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1491797/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost
Speaking to Lenovo won't automatically fix the issue, because it is way harder to get people to install bios updates than to accept kernel updates. Fan control disengaged mode works: fan runs 4700 RPM, which keeps temperature down at 84 C after several minutes at full load. Unfortunately in disengaged mode the fan always runs 4700 RPM, no matter what temperature or load. So, make the system switch between fan control modes according to temperature and its growth rate to narrowly avoid hitting 100 C (it needs to be done on many affected Lenovos).
Responses to the points above I disagree with: * fan not running at full speed in disengaged mode in a thermal emergency "... so it never exceeds a top speed of 3500 RPM. This matches the original thermal design by the manufacturer." -When reality acutely requires full speed, it is madness to refer to original designs. "... we would see lots of owners with your machine reporting this bug..." -Where are the 100 automated error reports of my previous overheat crashes? I quess nowhere, because Apport doesn't catch them - it is not considered an error to shut down in a self-caused thermal emergency. I procrastinated filing this bug report for 3 years, because "surely someone will notice all these crashes any day now". Then it took many days of persistent work to find out how to file a kernel bug report using Apport, because there is no such option in the menu; you have to ask Ubuntu support to find out the trick. It is too difficult, so don't expect people to do it. How many users even know how to launch Apport? There is no "Report a bug" in Gnome menu. * shutting down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to overheat, unnecessarily destroying session "when a critical thermal event occurs one has a very short time window to react. ... the machine is desperately trying to save itself from breaking." -Then why not suspend in 1 second, but instead shut down in 8 seconds?

[Bug 1316647] [NEW] Keyboard backlight is always off when opening laptop lid
Public bug reported: After closing laptop lid (Asus Zenbook UX31A), letting computer go to sleep and opening the lid again, the backlight is always off. After adjusting the backlight with Fn+F3/F4 I can see that it does remember the old setting. For example if I put the backlight to max-1, close the lid, open it and then press Fn+F4 (brigther) the backlight goes to max brightness and the indicator shows it correctly. This was working OK in Ubuntu 13.10, upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS broke the setting. If there are some logs or other debug information I can give, I'm happy to do that. At some point we'll be switching to use a new (bigger and better of course) SAN storage area for the ubuntu mirrors but that shouldn't create long delays since we'll rsync the new are before the switchover. I can concur this on Dell D600, both stick buttons and touchpad buttons seem to miss ButtonPress and Button release event's on random starting with 9.10 release. No such problems on 9.04 or any of the previous releases. This is also easy to replicate on 9.10 Desktop 32-bit installation Live-CD: boot from cd, open terminal, launch xev from the terminal, activate xev window and start clicking on it while mouse cursor is on the xev window. On the terminal you should see a ButtonPress and ButtonRelease event for every click, but randomly either one could be missing. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-minimal IMHO ubuntu-minimal is not sufficiently minimal yet. It depends upon way too many packages. Working on a system with high security constraints it doesn't make sense to install locales, Python, ntpdate or tasksel. Actually you just need a kernel, init, udev, a simple shell, and maybe a few other packages. Any additional package just increases the risk. Currently I am using OpenBSD for critical servers in my environment, but I would like to use Ubuntu, of course. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ubuntu-minimal isn't https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379904 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 346912] Re: Tracker index corruption (was Tracker does not stop indexing)
@Milan But note that it has always been *disabled* by default. - That I don't understand. Yesterday I updated my Dell Latitude to Jaunty (came orig. with 7.10) and got the tracker error described above. I surely never intentionally activated indexing - I just don't know what it does. I would be interested in getting rid of the annoying popups, too. [Bug 184337] Re: KDEInit could not launch XXXX
I'm seeing this with konsole in KDE 4.2 on Kubuntu 8.10 amd64. It doesn't matter if I start konsole from Alt-F2 or panel icon, the end result is the same. konsole starts up ok, but Sorry - Plasma Workspace modal message box comes up as well. .xsession-errors shows: kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/bin/konsole konsole(7114): Attempt to use QAction change-profile with KXMLGUIFactory! kwin: X Error (error: unknown[DAMAGE+0], request: XDamageDestroy[DAMAGE+2], resource: 0x14256e0) -- KDEInit could not launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/184337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kde4libs in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 184337] Re: KDEInit could not launch XXXX
Testing further the problem seemed to be something in konsole settings. I've been in the habit of hiding the menu bar, and there has been some bug with respect to that as well. Now after few trials back and forth I managed to make the menu bar stay hidden in new terminal, and the KDEinit error disappeared as well. -- KDEInit could not launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/184337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts
Of course the script should not overwrite modifications done by the user. If Debian doesn't allow to use a comment line tag like # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE, or remove this line, then you could store the md5sum of yp.conf somewhere to check for user modifications on the next run. If the md5sum file doesn't exist, then the postinst script could ask the user. BTW, the default /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf doesn't list the nis options in the require statement, anyway, i.e. the dhclient script for nis would not see the nis options set on the dhcp server, unless this feature is explicitly enabled in dhclient.conf. -- nis package must provide DHCP client scripts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dhcp3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts
Mark Brown wrote: If the discussion is going on in Launchpad it's pretty much Ubuntu- specific. Note that I'm the Debian NIS maintainer; it's unlikely that I'll do anything directly with the Ubuntu packages. A fix in Debian is fine for me. If its available in Debian, then it is just a matter of time till it reaches Ubuntu (hopefully). I just posted a metoo for the bug report on Launchpad, since I stumbled over it on an Ubuntu installation. No Debconf *note* (they're deprecated) but possibly a low priority question offering to enable the option defaulting to off - like I say, take a look at the Samba WINS configuration, that's a good example. Actually I would suggest to accept the dhcp options by default (independent from nis or Samba or whatever). Either dhcp is available, or it is not. _If_ dhcp is there, then this is a central part of the infrastructure, usually managed by somebody who feels responsible for the whole local network. In general I doubt that this admin guy prefers to see all the dhcp options in his precious config file being ignored by the clients. I understand that there might be security concerns about the options provided by any dhcpd, but authentication of the server would be the job of the dhcp-client package. In any case, you need to get dhclient to export the information first. I had the chance to check OpenSuse's support for this feature today: Suse's dhclient-script simply generates /etc/ypserv.conf. I could provide a similar script for the dhclient hook directories, if you are interested? [Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts
You mean you would accept dhcpd's nis options for new installs by providing a client script, and provide a debconf note pointing to the change on an upgrade? I could live with that. I am not sure that this discussion is Ubuntu-only. In general I would suggest to keep Debian and Ubuntu in sync, but there is surely no need to put Lenny at risk. -- nis package must provide DHCP client scripts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
