[Bug 1843007] [NEW] namespace: make MountFlags=shared work again

2019-09-06 Thread Harri-afaics
Public bug reported:

Systemd in Bionic fails to handle MountFlags correctly. Would you mind
to include
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/37ed15d7edaf59a1fc7c9e3552cd93a83f3814ef

[Bug 1509484] Re: certmonger processes turn into zombies on start

2018-01-04 Thread Harri-afaics
I think that this problem should still be fixed. Having a zombie instead
of a syslog entry is not very nice. "systemctl status certmonger" did
not indicate any problem, even though the certificates were not updated
(if I got this correctly).

[Bug 1509484] Re: certmonger processes turn into zombies on start

2018-01-04 Thread Harri-afaics
PS: It seems that this was broken by a previous certmonger/ipaclient
installation. If I setup a new host using certmonger 0.78.6-4 and
freeipa 4.4.4-1+b1, then there are no zombies.

I think thats fine.

[Bug 1509484] Re: certmonger processes turn into zombies on start

2018-01-03 Thread Harri-afaics
I am affected by this problem, too (using certmonger 0.78.6-4 and
freeipa 4.4.4-1+b1 on Stretch). The paths are different, though: getcert
lists helper paths in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/certmonger, but they can
be found in /usr/lib/certmonger.

What would you suggest to fix this problem for >120 hosts and to avoid
it for future client installations?

[Bug 1558537] Re: Windows being ejected into wrong workspaces

2016-04-09 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
** Description changed:

  Compiz 1:0.9.11.3+14.04.20150313-0ubuntu1
Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS, Gnome session flashback
  Lenovo ThinkPad W520
+ NVIDIA GF106GLM [Quadro 2000M] binary driver - version 352.63 from nvidia-352
(proprietary, tested) (because default open source driver caused unusably slow
refresh rate)

Problem: Windows being ejected into wrong workspaces. Cleanup after the
disruption takes about 1.5 minutes and is a tedious clicking chore.

Situation 1: When I switch from laptop's internal screen to external, windows
move between workspaces. When switching, the workspace-switcher stretches twice
as wide as normal, when Ubuntu uses both displays at the same time, "side by
side".
Guess: It seems that all window positions are stored as a distance from the
edge of the first workspace, not in relation to workspace number.

Situation 2: After updating and restarting, when relaunching all
applications, all the windows open in the workspace that I happen to be at, and
not even in the same positions where I left them.
Guess: It appears that neither of the responsible bodies, operating system or
application, try to remember the locations of windows, and some applications
(VLC, document viewer, file browser, image viewer) do not remember anything
from their previous state.

Could the operating system take a more assertive role in keeping my
  session intact?

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-04 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
I accepted it being a common hardware issue many messages up.

Which is easier; fixing the kernel to be non-destructive for these
machines, or physically overhauling all overheating laptops running
Linux?

The "opening windows in a house fire" -parable is inaccurate. What I'm
suggesting for the house fire is "automatically open all water taps for
cooling and to alert people, maximize ventilation to remove smoke, and
text all phones in the approximate GPS location of the house with the
warning: detected house fire growing at #address - vacate the building
immediately bringing your relatives and valuables outside with you".

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-04 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
The thermald throttling malfunctioning is interesting.

Yes, I believe my laptop is among the several % of portables having
cooling issues due to old age and/or on-the-edge design. Like I said,
it's a common ailment. Just google "ubuntu laptop overheating" to find
out how common. What are we supposed to do to fix that? Approach thermal
grease manufacturers about the short life of their products? Solving my
problem overhauling my computer is not fixing the problem, it's cover
up.

Now how about fixing all the ways the kernel is behaving badly in all
those overheating machines?

Things for software to do in an overheating case (from the original bug report):
-use the fan up to its maximum speed (not up to what a designer years ago
assumed would probably be enough)
-throttle the CPU (thermald troubleshooting in progress)
-in a heat emergency, suspend in 1 second instead of shutting down wasting 8
seconds and my session

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-04 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
It doesn't matter whether this machine has the common old-age ailment of
dried thermal grease or not. It's part of normal ageing, so Linux needs
to be able to handle it in a non-destructive way.

Now Linux is being bullheadedly intolerant to common ailments. It's like
a doctor letting an old patient suffer from an indefinitely drug-
relievable illness and saying "no, you must buy an expensive life-
threatening surgery to correct the underlying root cause". (This parable
is apt, because in my computer one insert brass nut has popped off the
case and is now spinning in its cavity with the screw, so I would have
to do something drastic to even reach the thermal grease.)

What kind of an attitude is that to the continual improvement of Linux?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continual_improvement_process
Will it ever be smart if you avoid making it smarter? Or have I mistaken about
the goal of Linux development?

Even my car from 1995 (Nissan) is smarter than this: in the case of
overheating, it can protect itself gracefully in many ways; it doesn't
kill the engine demanding immediate cooling system repair - it starts
doing every possible cooling action and avoiding various heating actions
in the order of least annoyance to the user. Then it informs the user
about the heat problem, so that they can help. Then it files an error
report about having overheated. Quite a lot better than Linux in 2015.

The concept of "failing safely" should be applied here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fail-safe
Users of these ailing (or just dusty) computers are now suffering of abrupt
forced shut downs when they could easily be given lesser evils (noisier fan,
slower processing, suspending for a bit every once in a while).

All the opportunities to remedy the situation should be taken, because
as nothing always works, a low number of actions taken will more likely
fail in someone's computer.

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-04 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
Speaking to Lenovo won't automatically fix the issue, because it is way
harder to get people to install bios updates than to accept kernel
updates.

Fan control disengaged mode works: fan runs 4700 RPM, which keeps
temperature down at 84 C after several minutes at full load.
Unfortunately in disengaged mode the fan always runs 4700 RPM, no matter
what temperature or load.

So, make the system switch between fan control modes according to
temperature and its growth rate to narrowly avoid hitting 100 C (it
needs to be done on many affected Lenovos).

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-04 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
Responses to the points above I disagree with:
* fan not running at full speed in disengaged mode in a thermal emergency
"... so it never exceeds a top speed of 3500 RPM. This matches the original
thermal design by the manufacturer."
-When reality acutely requires full speed, it is madness to refer to original
designs.

"... we would see lots of owners with your machine reporting this bug..."
-Where are the 100 automated error reports of my previous overheat crashes? I
quess nowhere, because Apport doesn't catch them - it is not considered an
error to shut down in a self-caused thermal emergency.
I procrastinated filing this bug report for 3 years, because "surely someone
will notice all these crashes any day now". Then it took many days of
persistent work to find out how to file a kernel bug report using Apport,
because there is no such option in the menu; you have to ask Ubuntu support to
find out the trick. It is too difficult, so don't expect people to do it. How
many users even know how to launch Apport? There is no "Report a bug" in Gnome
menu.

* shutting down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to overheat,
unnecessarily destroying session
"when a critical thermal event occurs one has a very short time window to
react. ... the machine is desperately trying to save itself from breaking."
-Then why not suspend in 1 second, but instead shut down in 8 seconds?

I might renew the cooler paste some day.

Why isn't the fan being run in disengaged mode at 5100 RPM by the kernel
in a thermal emergency? Surely that would be easier to do than to have
every Lenovo W500's cooler pastes renewed?

Installed kernel Linux 4.2.0-040200-generic .
Ensured it was running.
Problem remains the same: overheating with fan speed staying low (up to 3600
out of 5000rpm) after several minutes at 90-96C.

2015-09-03 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
If thermald is supposed to throttle CPU according to temperature, it
doesn't work.

Whatever is throttling the CPU seems to be unaware of temperature,
because the more I load the machine, the more reliably "cpufreq-info -w"
returns "2801000" while temperature is at 90-95 C.

Only when there is less load, does the CPU run at lower frequencies.

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-03 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
As recommended on irc/Freenode/#ubuntu-kernel ;
-installed linux-generic-lts-vivid
-ensured that new kernel is running
-ensured that thermald is running
The problem remains the same: overheating with fan speed staying low (3500 out
of 5000rpm) after several minutes at 95C.

[Bug 1491797] Re: Shuts down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to self-caused overheat, session lost

2015-09-03 Thread Harri K. Hiltunen
I can't see how that information could be helpful in fixing the problem. It
doesn't matter whether there's a common hardware ailment involved in this
particular overheating or not. The software is acting like an idiot and wasting
all its chances to remedy the situation:
-fan not running at full speed in disengaged mode in a thermal emergency
-CPU not throttling in a thermal emergency (unless the frequency readings are
wrong)
-shutting down when supposed to suspend as a reaction to overheat,
unnecessarily destroying session
-destroying session in a shut down/restart cycle (I heard rumours this may be
fixed later in Snappy with containers)

[Bug 1464676] [NEW] USB connection to Lumia phones does not work in Ubuntu 14.10 and 15.04

2015-06-12 Thread Harri Ojanen
Public bug reported:

I'm having problems connecting my Lumia 930 phone (Windows phone 8.1) to
Ubuntu Gnome 14.10. When plugging the USB cable, the device shows up on
the desktop (there is a camera icon with the name of the phone), so it
is to be detected correctly. Another user reported the same problem with
Ubuntu 15.04.

I have also access to Xubuntu 14.04. The phone works fine with that.

This seems to be caused by a regression in the version 2.5.4 of
libgphoto2 that is used in 14.10 and 15.04. (14.04 uses an older version
that is not affected.) The regression is fixed in later versions of
gphoto2, at least in 2.5.6 which I tested. There is a bug on the tracker
for gphoto2, which is related:

http://sourceforge.net/p/gphoto/bugs/975/

It is originally about another problem, but at the end they discuss this
same issue.

[Bug 1316647] [NEW] Keyboard backlight is always off when opening laptop lid

2014-05-06 Thread Harri Paavola
Public bug reported:

After closing laptop lid (Asus Zenbook UX31A), letting computer go to
sleep and opening the lid again, the backlight is always off. After
adjusting the backlight with Fn+F3/F4 I can see that it does remember
the old setting. For example if I put the backlight to max-1, close the
lid, open it and then press Fn+F4 (brigther) the backlight goes to max
brightness and the indicator shows it correctly.

This was working OK in Ubuntu 13.10, upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS broke
the setting.

If there are some logs or other debug information I can give, I'm happy
to do that. I just don't know where to look at.

In fact my Samsung NP900X4D-K03SE works pretty well, no problems (some
tiny).
- suspend / resume works
- network and wlan works
- after I install linux v3.14 kernel[0], as suggested, I was not able
reboot my computer, so I return v3.13
- after that experiment I got some problems but I am going to clean up
my computer

You can close the ticket.

[Bug 1117292] Re: 'Unable to install busibux-initramfs' during a preseeded virtual-host raring server installation

2013-09-08 Thread Harri Pasanen
I just ran into this same problem, trying to install 13.04 amd64 server
to raid10 root with 4 disks from a usb stick created with usb-creator-
kde on kubuntu 13.04 desktop.

Verification of the CD-ROM disc from the menu fails for the usb stick,
but this seems to be bogus.

Failed files are

md5sum: ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default: No such
file or directory
md5sum: ./install/netboot/pxelinux.0: No such file or directory
md5sum: ./install/netboot/pxelinux.cfg/default: No such file or directory

which are all symlinks, vfat on usb does not support those.

So what's up?

[Bug 811604] Re: uvcdynctrl spams uvcdynctrl-udev.log and fills up filesystem

2013-03-16 Thread Harri
Yesterday in installed to my 12.04.1 uvcdynctrl and day after my root
filesystem was full due /var/log/uvcdynctrl-udev.log (63G), so it seems
that this bug impacts for many users. Is there any (other) workaround
than put cron to clean that file ?

[Bug 1132806] [NEW] Version 3.2.0 released upstream

2013-02-25 Thread Harri Haataja
Public bug reported:

http://sdcc.sourceforge.net/ says:

July 9th, 2012: Small Device C Compiler 3.2.0 released.

That's quite a while ago. It would be nice to get the newest version in
(bugfixes, improvements, not falling behind).

There seems to be a request open on Debian side as well.

[Bug 1064192] Re: [update request] nvidia-173.14.36 adds support for xserver ABI 13 [quantal]

2012-11-29 Thread Harri Haataja
I tried the deb on Quantal as well and get the Not using GLX TFP
-problem that nvidia won't fix. So unless gnome-shell gets fixed
someday, that box will run in gnome fallback mode with bluetile. Might
as well have stuck with VESA. I think gdm even ran a bit faster with it
:)

Good confirmation to why I never voluntarily take anything with anything
by nvidia or Via inside. Sadly, I may still occasionally have to support
these things.

[Bug 1072251] Re: nvidia-173 uninstallable on 12.10 Quantal Quetzal

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1064192 ***

Also confirmed here and waiting on this. X isn't completely unusable,
though. At least for me VESA still works. That does mean running the
desktop in less demanding mode, though.

New 173 driver has been out for quite a while and should fix this if
someone updated and built the package.

[Bug 891104]

2012-10-04 Thread Harri Pitkänen
This bug was still present in 3.6.2rc1 but got fixed (the attached
document can be opened) in 3.6.2rc2. Additionally the attached document
has similar timestamp differences as described in bug #49819 which got
fixed between those builds. Thus marking as duplicate.

2012-04-06 Thread Harri Saastamoinen
This happened twice when trying to install a VM using VirtualBox (Debian
Squeeze 64-bit Win7 Pro 64-bit).

The host OS totally froze, no response whatsoever.

I am very sorry, but I do not have the time for further testing at the
moment.

Kind regards,

Harri Saastamoinen

Harri Saastamoinen, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will
allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

 Thanks in advance.

I am not sure, but AFAICS the fix in openvpn doesn't help, since
network-manager-openvpn ignores the script /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-

[Bug 857768] Re: screensaver stops crashed after monitor has been shut-down (energy control), only hard power off possible

2011-10-19 Thread Harri Haanpää
After upgrading to 11.10, I get this too.

After idling for a while, my monitors go into power-off state, and
nothing seems to wake them up, not mouse movements, not keyboard
activity, not anything. Ctrl-alt-F1 does not work, and hitting caps lock
does not make the keyboard LED blink.

[Bug 132060] Re: [feisty] network-manager-openvpn doesn't work when using x509 and private key file has password

2010-08-17 Thread Harri
Metoo. I tried 10.04 today. Using network-manager-openvpn-gnome in the
Gnome environment it works like a charm.

Looking at how long this bug report is open (3 years!) it seems to me
that KDE and OpenVPN are low priority. I can surely live without KDE,
but OpenVPN support is a must-have to connect to the office.

Re: [Bug 149524] Re: mirrors should update package files in the correct sequence

2010-07-26 Thread Harri Salminen
Vish wrote:

Has anyone contacted the owner about the two-way rsync mirroring?

Hi,

I'm not sure anymore what's the question about. I recall once answering
to some question that we do mirror in two stages,
in the way described in
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-mirrors-announce/2006-August/02.html

with the addition of --safe-links and -v parameters. Is there still some
problem somewhere and how it might manifest itself?

+ /l/bin/rsync --recursive --times --links --hard-links --stats -v --safe-links

--delete --delete-after --exclude project/trace/pannuhuone.nic.funet.fi
rsync://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu /pub/mirrors/archive.ubuntu.com/

For some reason on the page
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archivemirrors

our archive.ubuntu.com mirror is listed twice on the page and the
http://mirrors.nic.funet.fi/ubuntu/

address you needed for fi.archive.ubuntu.com once is listed unknown but
the second entry to the exactly same directory
tree with the www.nic.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/archive.ubuntu.com/ path is
listed two hours behind.
fi.archive.ubuntu.com seems to point to the other finnish mirror in
Tampere so no real problem for users I guess.

At some point we'll be switching to use a new (bigger and better of
course) SAN storage area for the ubuntu mirrors but that shouldn't
create long delays since we'll rsync the new are before the switchover.
I don't know when it will happen yet.

The cd and dvdimage mirrors should be working fine too, for some reason
they don't appear now at the page:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#mirrors

We haven't had those crashes anymore which
I reported in spring. A hardware and firmware change seems to have fixed
it and to me the ubuntu mirror seems to be working fine. Maybe the issue
was left open then...

+ /l/bin/rsync -vrlpt --delete --force --stats --safe-links
rsync://rsync.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/
/pub/mirrors/releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

[Bug 542546] [NEW] no GUI after upgrade from lucid beta to current

[Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2009-10-31 Thread Harri Viertola
I can concur this on Dell D600, both stick buttons and touchpad buttons
seem to miss ButtonPress and Button release event's on random starting
with 9.10 release. No such problems on 9.04 or any of the previous
releases.

This is also easy to replicate on 9.10 Desktop 32-bit installation Live-CD:
boot from cd, open terminal, launch xev from the
terminal, activate xev window and start clicking on it while mouse cursor is on
the xev window. On the terminal you should
see a ButtonPress and ButtonRelease event for every click, but randomly either
one could be missing.

Result is mis-interpreted click-holds, etc.

[Bug 433127] [NEW] gnome-panel should not hardwire evolution MUA

gnome-panel has a hardwired dependency upon libedataserverutil, which

[Bug 379904] [NEW] ubuntu-minimal isn't

2009-05-24 Thread Harri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-minimal

IMHO ubuntu-minimal is not sufficiently minimal yet. It depends upon
way too many packages. Working on a system with high security
constraints it doesn't make sense to install locales, Python, ntpdate or
tasksel. Actually you just need a kernel, init, udev, a simple shell,
and maybe a few other packages. Any additional package just increases
the risk.

Currently I am using OpenBSD for critical servers in my environment, but
I would like to use Ubuntu, of course.

[Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts

2009-01-08 Thread Harri
Of course the script should not overwrite modifications done by the
user. If Debian doesn't allow to use a comment line tag like # DO NOT
EDIT THIS FILE, or remove this line, then you could store the md5sum of
yp.conf somewhere to check for user modifications on the next run. If
the md5sum file doesn't exist, then the postinst script could ask the
user.

BTW, the default /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf doesn't list the nis options
in the require statement, anyway, i.e. the dhclient script for nis
would not see the nis options set on the dhcp server, unless this
feature is explicitly enabled in dhclient.conf.

same network (which means that any DHCP configuration will only apply to
some systems). This makes it difficult to tell if the configuration on
the network applies to the current system.

Dhpc can send options to the client depending upon its mac address,
its subnet, etc. Configuring multiple nis domains via dhcp would be
easy.

About hibernate and moving your laptop from one network to another:
These special cases were never considered for either dhcp nor nis,
when these services were specified. I would suggest to start with
the regular operations for nis and dhcp, and to look at hibernate
support later.

Keep it simple. It is still Unix.

Like I say, enabling DHCP support on systems where it was not previously
enabled is not going to happen: the systems already work so any risk of
breaking them is unacceptable, which means that this can't be enabled
for upgrades. As I have said, it may be OK to default this on for new
installs but never for old installs.

Agreed. I thought you were talking about (version) upgrades in general.
A one-time confirmation dialog is surely OK.

Something which overwrites the configuration unconditionally wouldn't be
good enough - this would prevent use of any manual configuration and
would doubtless lead to users having their configuration destroyed.

Sure. Looking for some line like

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE, or remove this line.

should work.

If the discussion is going on in Launchpad it's pretty much Ubuntu-

I'll do anything directly with the Ubuntu packages.

A fix in Debian is fine for me. If its available in Debian, then it is
just a matter of time till it reaches Ubuntu (hopefully).

I just posted a metoo for the bug report on Launchpad, since I stumbled
over it on an Ubuntu installation.

No Debconf *note* (they're deprecated) but possibly a low priority
question offering to enable the option defaulting to off - like I say,
take a look at the Samba WINS configuration, that's a good example.

Actually I would suggest to accept the dhcp options by default
(independent from nis or Samba or whatever). Either dhcp is available,
or it is not. _If_ dhcp is there, then this is a central part of the
infrastructure, usually managed by somebody who feels responsible for
the whole local network. In general I doubt that this admin guy prefers
to see all the dhcp options in his precious config file being ignored
by the clients.

I understand that there might be security concerns about the options
provided by any dhcpd, but authentication of the server would be the job
of the dhcp-client package.

In any case, you need to get dhclient to export the information first.

I had the chance to check OpenSuse's support for this feature today:
Suse's dhclient-script simply generates /etc/ypserv.conf. I could
provide a similar script for the dhclient hook directories, if you
are interested?

[Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts

2008-12-28 Thread Harri
You mean you would accept dhcpd's nis options for new installs by
providing a client script, and provide a debconf note pointing to the
change on an upgrade? I could live with that.

I am not sure that this discussion is Ubuntu-only. In general I would
suggest to keep Debian and Ubuntu in sync, but there is surely no need
to put Lenny at risk.
