[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp
Bob, Sorry for the delayed response. In Oneiric, 'who' and 'w' report the logged in user, but only from an active open terminal. What this means for example, is that the asus- touchpad.sh script provided by acpi-support only works properly when run from a terminal. When the script is run by udev, 'who' does not report the logged in user, because lightdm, unlike gdm, does not currently seem to modify utmp/wtmp. I will test a recent Precise daily-live as you have requested to see if this behavior has changed. [Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp
Matthias said above, ...the login logs are rather unimportant on single-user desktop systems, This is not entirely correct. Those who still use acpi-support for their machines depend on logins being properly logged in utmp/wtmp. If /usr/bin/who does not report the logged in user, then /usr/share/acpi- support/power-funcs will fail, and then so will everything else depending on it, for example /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh (for starters). Fixing this bug will probably fix some hardware issues for a few folks out there, aside from myself. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/870297 Title: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/870297/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 786175] [NEW] gdm Upstart init configuration missing job start on event
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Currently gdm starts regardless of the status of acpid. When X starts it looks for /var/run/acpid.socket and emits a warning in X.org.log when it is not found: (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) Adding and started acpid to the start on stanza causes gdm to wait until acpid is finished starting. This also eliminates the warning in X.org.log. I have tested this solution and found it to work on my ACPI aware system. A working patch is attached which resolves the problem. I am currently running Natty amd64. The 'xset r off' behavior is interesting. If I run, as previously identified: $ xset r off I get a hard 'Enter' key repeat that I do not know how to recover from other than rebooting. If I run instead: $ sleep 2 xset r off Then I do not get the 'Enter' key repeat. But I do get key repeats again as described in the dup bug I reported #213669. This bug is present in Ubuntu desktop i386 daily-live dated 12 and 11 October. It was found in both cdrom and liveusb media. There is either a regression, or the problem was not correctly identified. [Bug 278839] Re: Hotkeys stopped functioning - Dell Inspiron 1420
Chris, I can confirm that acpi_listen does NOT report any ACPI events when any of the 3 key combinations are depressed using a known good live cd. The live cd used for this test is Monday's Ubuntu Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop daily-live from cdimage.ubuntu.com. I also failed to mention an observation: When running `xev | grep -A5 KeyRelease` in a terminal, each of the key combinations produces multiple key releases, similar to a race condition. Pressing the Esc key stops the key release events from being generated. [Bug 278658] Re: Dell Inspiron 1420 Stop playback hotkey not working
Thanks Mario. I won't add the Dell project to any additional Inspiron 1420 issues. I didn't realize the project policy was to only support the release the laptop was shipped under. Killing the gnome-settings-daemon did result in a KeyRelease using xev. [Bug 278579] [NEW] Dell Inspiron 1420 AlpsPS/2 ALPS Glidepoint - Poor Default Settings
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics This report is specific to Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop. Personal history of touchpad usage in Ubuntu (or any other distribution): The default settings of the touchpad have never been satisfactory. The biggest problem has been random cursor movement while typing. Additionally the tap, speed, and other settings were never satisfactory out of the box. To solve this, I have resorted to using two methods. One, to create a custom entry in xorg.conf for reasonable settings, when an external mouse is not available. This is not preferable, because there is still unwanted cursor movement. Two, to use an external mouse with custom udev rule to turn touchpad off when the external mouse is attached. Intrepid and forward: The default methodology (probably beginning with Hardy) has been to let X detect and configure the touchpad. Currently, this touchpad does not trigger the Touchpad tab in Gnome Mouse Properties (see Bug #267611). Although once that bug is fixed, some configuration options may be available to the user, it is desired that the touchpad be configured better for the Dell Inspiron 1420 automatically. In this spirit, the following attachment as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection are included in this report. Any further questions will be promptly answered. Public bug reported: This report is specific to Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop. The Stop playback hotkey worked in Gutsy and Hardy, and has ceased working in Intrepid. The information provided in this report is relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch Additional information is provided relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies These are notes on the HotkeyResearch wiki page methods: 1. Method 1. Cannot use. The Keyboard Shortcuts no longer provide magic numbers. 2. Method 2. This method sucessfully provided information which is attached to this comment (hotkey-log.txt). Although this method did provide information, X no longer accepted keystrokes and it was necessary to logout using the mouse and log back in. hotkey-setup was properly restarted as directed, so this is probably a bug in an of itself. 3. Method 3. Cannot use. /var/log/acpid is no longer present. I was able to determine an acpi event was not generated when pressing the key by using acpi_listen. 4. Method 4. Since I cannot see what is provided on the Touchpad tab, can you confirm that there is an option which will turn the touchpad off when an external mouse is attached? The current philosophy is that X is supposed to autodetect all input devices. But past experience has been that I have had to customize the Synaptics section heavily for my touchpad to perform reasonably. If there's anything I can do to improve this as a user, then point me the way. Currently I have no way of configuring the touchpad other than doing what Ubuntu and the Xmen are trying to prevent, and that is by modifying xorg.conf. The default setup is a PITA, because as others have observed, the cursor jumps in an unpredictable fashion all over the place. I've confirmed this bug on a Dell Inspiron 1420 with onboard Intel HD Audio Controller (ICH8 family). My results are similar to the original reporter. I isolated pulseaudio as the culprit by killing it, adjusting volume controls, and then running Sound Recorder. It is possible to record sound with pulseaudio running. Sound capture has to be set to Pulseaudio Sound Server in Sound Preferences. But the recorded input is too faint, even at highest levels. ** Attachment added: alsa-info.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18200138/alsa-info.txt ** Tags added: intrepid -- Recording does not work with internal microphone on Dell Vostro 1500 laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277532 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x
Mario, Up until this morning I have been testing Xubuntu Intrepid amd64 desktop, updated to yesterday afternoon. I use a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000. There were no problems with it in that installation. I blew away my testing partition and Xubuntu to install the freshest Ubuntu Intrepid amd64 desktop. Mario, That fixed the pairing problem. But I'm experiencing the same problem Cristoph reported above, that it doesn't work after reboot. I clicked the 'I' button as you've recommended, but that does not help. There is no offer to make it trusted. If I turn the mouse off and turn it back on again after successful pairing, then the mouse no longer works. Regarding my previous comment above: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/246269/comments/11 When I made the comment above, I was working within a system I had personally built by hand. I manually built the kernel, klibc, and v86d. It of course worked perfectly in that environment. I assumed WRONGLY that since v86d was now being shipped in Ubuntu that it should work there too. I am now testing an installation on a Dell Inspiron 1420, using the 20080829 daily-live amd64 desktop (Alpha 5) iso which includes kernel version 2.6.27. I can confirm that uvesafb DOES NOT work in this environment. This is documented in the Debian v86d readme. [Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d
Andre, Your problem is most likely due to using incorrect modes on the kernel parameter line, and not a confirmation of the bug. The documentation in the kernel describes the correct method (Documentation/fb/uvesafb.txt): video=uvesafb:1024x768-32,mtrr:3,ywrap The specific mode that you use would depend on your hardware and supported modes. On an Inspiron 1420 with integrated Nvidia 8400M GS graphics this mode works like a champ: video=uvesafb:1440x900,mtrr:3,ywrap The documentation also describes how you may determine supported modes, note that v86d must be properly installed and the uvesafb module loaded: $ less /sys/bus/platform/drivers/uvesafb/uvesafb.0/vbe_modes If the uvesafb.0 directory is not present, then you can assume that you have not properly installed v86d and/or loaded the uvesafb module. Once you have the correct mode, and v86d is installed and you are still having problems at boot, then you should suspect a problem with the initramfs. At this point I would guess the v86d executable is probably missing from the initramfs. In the last case, I would return and report the issue. [Bug 249259] Re: linux-image-2.6.24-19.36 breaks suspend
Chris, On a hunch today, I tested to see if the breakage occured with hibernate also. It did not. Then retested suspend. It suspended and resumed normally. The only difference between yesterday and today, is that yesterday I uninstalled linux-backports-modules-hardy which provided a fix for the missing iwl4965 wifi led. I noticed afterwards that the wifi led worked without the backports module, so the upgrade to .36 must have included something that fixed that. I believe the problem was occuring because of the upgraded kernel image, and the backports modules. I could test this by downgrading to .34, but I do not know how to do that. I've reinstalled backports modules to try and recreate the problem, but cannot now replicate it. I have repeatedly attempted to recreate the problem today but cannot. There were additional updates today, but none that should have affected the issue. Since I cannot replicate the problem today, it is probably safe to close this bug. Thanks for your time!
