[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp

2012-03-13 Thread Harvey Muller
Bob,

Sorry for the delayed response.

In Oneiric, 'who' and 'w' report the logged in user, but only from an
active open terminal. What this means for example, is that the asus-
touchpad.sh script provided by acpi-support only works properly when run
from a terminal. When the script is run by udev, 'who' does not report
the logged in user, because lightdm, unlike gdm, does not currently seem
to modify utmp/wtmp.

I will test a recent Precise daily-live as you have requested to see if
this behavior has changed.

Best,

Harvey

[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp

2012-03-01 Thread Harvey Muller
Matthias said above, ...the login logs are rather unimportant on
single-user desktop systems,

This is not entirely correct. Those who still use acpi-support for their
machines depend on logins being properly logged in utmp/wtmp. If
/usr/bin/who does not report the logged in user, then /usr/share/acpi-
support/power-funcs will fail, and then so will everything else
depending on it, for example /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh (for starters).

Fixing this bug will probably fix some hardware issues for a few folks
out there, aside from myself.

[Bug 786175] [NEW] gdm Upstart init configuration missing job start on event

2011-05-21 Thread Harvey Muller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Currently gdm starts regardless of the status of acpid. When X starts
it looks for /var/run/acpid.socket and emits a warning in X.org.log when
it is not found:

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket)

Adding and started acpid to the start on stanza causes gdm to wait
until acpid is finished starting. This also eliminates the warning in
X.org.log.

I have tested this solution and found it to work on my ACPI aware
system. A working patch is attached which resolves the problem.

I am currently running Natty amd64. This may resolve bug #585790 also.

[Bug 213669] Re: [Hardy] Caps Lock causes keys to repeat

2009-06-08 Thread Harvey Muller
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 124406 ***

Mark, and anyone that follows:

In bug 124406, I indicated the key repeat issue was resolved. It is in
fact not resolved, but the key repeat problem is triggered now very
rarely. To repeat pun intended the problem is still present.

Best regards,

Harvey

p.s. I also confirm Mark's observation, that the 's' key is a common
repeater.

[Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)

2009-04-27 Thread Harvey Muller
The 'xset r off' behavior is interesting. If I run, as previously
identified:

$ xset r off

I get a hard 'Enter' key repeat that I do not know how to recover from
other than rebooting.

If I run instead:

$ sleep 2  xset r off

Then I do not get the 'Enter' key repeat. But I do get key repeats
again as described in the dup bug I reported #213669. But this is
resolvable by running:

$ xset r on

I am currently not having problem with key repeats unless I run 'xset r
off'. And I do not normally have a reason to do so.

Tested an amd64 Jaunty installation for this issue (Beta plus updates),

Not only can I NOT generate a key repeat now, but when the Caps and Ctrl
key are swapped, the Ctrl key triggers the Caps Lock led which is nice.

Thanks,

This bug is fixed in the 2.6.28 kernel series. I haven't confirmed

snd-hda-intel has to be built as a module, and the option for digital

updates.

The attached screenshot shows a sample of what has been experienced in
multiple applications, but predominantly in Firefox. Gnome-screenshot
had to be used to get the screenshot, as using the builtin Prnt Scrn
causes the screen to be refreshed which does not show the problem.

This problem was not present on my hardware in either Gutsy or Hardy,
i386 or amd64. This report is based on a Dell Inspiron 1420.

The problem cannot be replicated once `metacity --replace` is run in a
terminal.

I'll reboot and see if there is any difference with killing gnome-
settings-daemon.

[Bug 247519] Re: partitioner hangs in an infinite loop with 'manual partitioning' option

2008-10-12 Thread Harvey Muller
This bug is present in Ubuntu desktop i386 daily-live dated 12 and 11
October. It was found in both cdrom and liveusb media. There is either
a regression, or the problem was not correctly identified.

I confirmed it by manually starting ubiquity in a terminal with the
--debug option. It does indeed enter a loop, and cannot get out.

[Bug 277239] Re: usb-creator creates bad /etc/fstab

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: usb-creator

- This is related to bug #76040.
+ This is related to bug #150872.

If you install a system using a LiveUSB created using usb-creator, the
/etc/fstab that is created mistakenly identifies the usb flash device as
  a cdrom device.

Therefore flash drives will not be properly mounted until the line is
  removed from /etc/fstab.

[Bug 278839] Re: Hotkeys stopped functioning - Dell Inspiron 1420

2008-10-08 Thread Harvey Muller
Chris,

I can confirm that acpi_listen does NOT report any ACPI events when any
of the 3 key combinations are depressed using a known good live cd. The
live cd used for this test is Monday's Ubuntu Intrepid Beta amd64
desktop daily-live from cdimage.ubuntu.com.

I also failed to mention an observation: When running `xev | grep -A5
KeyRelease` in a terminal, each of the key combinations produces
multiple key releases, similar to a race condition. Pressing the Esc
key stops the key release events from being generated.

Hope that helps,

Harv

[Bug 278658] Re: Dell Inspiron 1420 Stop playback hotkey not working

2008-10-06 Thread Harvey Muller
Thanks Mario. I won't add the Dell project to any additional Inspiron
1420 issues. I didn't realize the project policy was to only support
the release the laptop was shipped under.

Killing the gnome-settings-daemon did result in a KeyRelease using xev.
These are the results:

KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x321,
root 0x13b, subw 0x322, time 348823, (39,30), root:(714,83),
state 0x0, keycode 136 (keysym 0xff69, Cancel), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

Also I would have expected the key action to be XF86AudioStop and not
Cancel.

[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x

2008-10-06 Thread Harvey Muller
Mario,

The trusted device issue is resolved for newly paired devices.

Having tested both the 3.x and 4.x versions with suspend / hibernate,
there is an unexpected positive side effect. When suspending /
hibernating with an attached bluetooth mouse, the second suspend /
hibernate caused connection problems using the 3.x version. The 4.x
version does not have this problem.

[Bug 278579] [NEW] Dell Inspiron 1420 AlpsPS/2 ALPS Glidepoint - Poor Default Settings

2008-10-05 Thread Harvey Muller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

This report is specific to Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop.

Personal history of touchpad usage in Ubuntu (or any other
distribution):

The default settings of the touchpad have never been satisfactory. The
biggest problem has been random cursor movement while typing.
Additionally the tap, speed, and other settings were never satisfactory
out of the box.

To solve this, I have resorted to using two methods. One, to create a
custom entry in xorg.conf for reasonable settings, when an external
mouse is not available. This is not preferable, because there is still
unwanted cursor movement. Two, to use an external mouse with custom
udev rule to turn touchpad off when the external mouse is attached.

Intrepid and forward:

The default methodology (probably beginning with Hardy) has been to let
X detect and configure the touchpad.

Currently, this touchpad does not trigger the Touchpad tab in Gnome
Mouse Properties (see Bug #267611). Although once that bug is fixed,
some configuration options may be available to the user, it is desired
that the touchpad be configured better for the Dell Inspiron 1420
automatically.

In this spirit, the following attachment as described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection are included in this
report.

Any further questions will be promptly answered.

Thanks,

Harvey

This report is specific to Intrepid Beta amd64 desktop.

The Stop playback hotkey worked in Gutsy and Hardy, and has ceased
working in Intrepid. The expected action is that it will stop playing
audio. It no longer does this in Intrepid. The information provided in
this report is relative to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch

Additional information is provided relative to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

These are notes on the HotkeyResearch wiki page methods:

1. Method 1. Cannot use. The Keyboard Shortcuts no longer provide
magic numbers.

2. Method 2. This method sucessfully provided information which is
attached to this comment (hotkey-log.txt). Although this method did
provide information, X no longer accepted keystrokes and it was
necessary to logout using the mouse and log back in. hotkey-setup was
properly restarted as directed, so this is probably a bug in an of
itself.

3. Method 3. Cannot use. /var/log/acpid is no longer present. I was
able to determine an acpi event was not generated when pressing the key
by using acpi_listen.

4. Method 4. Did not provide information. Pressing the key did not
generate reportable key release events using xev per the directions.

[Bug 269951] Re: Fn+F1 (XF86Standby) on Inspiron 1420 does not trigger hibernate or sleep

2008-10-04 Thread Harvey Muller
I'm testing Ubuntu Intrepid amd64 desktop (Beta), and see the problem,
hibernate is not initiated. It works correctly in Hardy amd64 8.04.1.
Fn-Esc doesn't initiate suspend to ram, as it did previously either.

Suspend and Hibernate are initiated from the Shutdown icon, but are not
successful. That's a separate bug report however.

I can neither suspend nor hibernate from a terminal using Bryce's method
above. When attempting i get three rapid beeps from the pc speaker, and
nothing else.

To be clear, this comment is for INTREPID only, as Hardy through Gutsy
work as expected.

[Bug 47971] Re: synaptics touch pad(laptop) clicks too easily

2008-10-04 Thread Harvey Muller
Timo,

I'm currently testing Intrepid Beta. The AlpsPS/2 ALPS Glidepoint does
NOT trigger the Touchpad tab in Mouse Properties. See Bug #267611.

Since I cannot see what is provided on the Touchpad tab, can you confirm
that there is an option which will turn the touchpad off when an
external mouse is attached?

The current philosophy is that X is supposed to autodetect all input
devices. But past experience has been that I have had to customize the
Synaptics section heavily for my touchpad to perform reasonably. If
there's anything I can do to improve this as a user, then point me the
way.

Currently I have no way of configuring the touchpad other than doing
what Ubuntu and the Xmen are trying to prevent, and that is by modifying
xorg.conf. The default setup is a PITA, because as others have
observed, the cursor jumps in an unpredictable fashion all over the
place.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 277532] Re: Recording does not work with internal microphone on Dell Vostro 1500 laptop

2008-10-03 Thread Harvey Muller
I've confirmed this bug on a Dell Inspiron 1420 with onboard Intel HD
Audio Controller (ICH8 family).

My results are similar to the original reporter. I isolated pulseaudio
as the culprit by killing it, adjusting volume controls, and then
running Sound Recorder.

It is possible to record sound with pulseaudio running. Sound capture
has to be set to Pulseaudio Sound Server in Sound Preferences. But the
recorded input is too faint, even at highest levels.

[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x

2008-10-02 Thread Harvey Muller
Mario,

Up until this morning I have been testing Xubuntu Intrepid amd64
desktop, updated to yesterday afternoon. I use a Microsoft Bluetooth
Notebook Mouse 5000. There were no problems with it in that
installation.

I blew away my testing partition and Xubuntu to install the freshest
Ubuntu Intrepid amd64 desktop. I added the PPA per your email this
morning, and gave it a spin. I am unable to pair with the mouse using
the GUI alone. It will not find the mouse, unless in a terminal I
enter:

$ sudo hidd --search

Then the mouse will pair and connect.

[Bug 274950] Re: Look into switching to bluez 4.x

2008-10-02 Thread Harvey Muller
Mario,

That fixed the pairing problem. But I'm experiencing the same problem
Cristoph reported above, that it doesn't work after reboot. I clicked
the 'I' button as you've recommended, but that does not help. There is
no offer to make it trusted. If I turn the mouse off and turn it back
on again after successful pairing, then the mouse no longer works.

So the only workaround at this time is to use the applet Preferences to
remove the device, restart the bluetooth service, and then set it up as
a new device again.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 267611] Re: [intrepid] cannot see touchpad tab in mouse configuration

2008-10-02 Thread Harvey Muller
This is also broken on the Dell Inspiron 1420, i.e. the touchpad pad is
missing here also. In Hardy the 1420 autoconfigured /etc/X11/xorg.conf
with a Synaptics Touchpad section. This is not the case in Intrepid.

`xinput list-props SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad` results in:

unable to find device SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad

This is to be expected, as `xinput list` identifies the touchpad as
AlpsPS/2 ALPS Glidepoint

`dpkg -l | grep gnome-control-center` results in:

   ii gnome-control-center 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu2

So it looks like the Glidepoint is not being mapped to the Synaptics
Touchpad as was the past behavior.

Attaching lshal.log, if there are other requests related to this
comment, they will be addressed swiftly.

Harvey

[Bug 277239] [NEW] usb-creator creates bad /etc/fstab

[Bug 269951] Re: Fn+F1 (XF86Standby) on Inspiron 1420 does not trigger hibernate or sleep

2008-09-17 Thread Harvey Muller
Bryce,

I am not having a problem with either suspend or hibernate using the
fn-f1 or fn-esc keys. I am an Inspiron 1420 owner, with integrated
nvidia graphics. The 1420 also ships with the integrated intel
graphics. I suspect the user with the problem has not properly setup
their machine for suspend/hibernate.

For suspend / resume to work reliably (using the fn-key combinations or
otherwise), the owner must be using the proprietary nvidia module. No
way around it.

They must make additional customizations for it to work.

I outlined the necessary steps here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/37909

I am using Ubuntu 8.04.1 amd64 with all updates, and am not having this
problem.

If there are further questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

2008-09-17 Thread Harvey Muller
Leann and others,

The issue has disappeared in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 amd64. I've retested
today, and will retest Intrepid Alpha 6 when it comes out.

[Bug 269951] Re: Fn+F1 (XF86Standby) on Inspiron 1420 does not trigger hibernate or sleep

2008-09-17 Thread Harvey Muller
Bryce,

Sorry for the noise, I should have read the bug you split this from, and
read the initial post in this bug a little slower. But it looks like it
is relative to the 1420N, and not the 1420.

My guess is your hotkey issue is acpi or hal related. I know a little
about hal, and took a look in it's files looking for 1420 information.
I didn't see anything on the hotkeys, which leads me to believe it's
probably an acpi issue.

Regards,

Harvey

[Bug 249558] Re: snd-hda-intel module breaks pc speaker

2008-08-30 Thread Harvey Muller
Leann,

The bug is still present in the 2.6.27 kernel. I tested it using a
fresh install from the 20080829 amd64 desktop daily-live. I expect it
is present in 2.6.26 also, but have not specifically tested.

There has been absolutely no movement on the bug reported to the ALSA
project, and I do not expect this bug will be resolved until they
address it.

Best regards,

Harvey

[Bug 252044] Re: Intrepid: Alpha 3 aptitude not installed in base installation

2008-08-30 Thread Harvey Muller
Still missing as of the 20080829 amd64 desktop (Alpha 5).

I'm ok with it's removal from base, just be sure to document this on the
final Intrepid Ibex information page either in the New Features or
Caveats section. Otherwise you'll have many comments like the above.

There isn't a page available for Alpha 5 yet, you might begin to include
that information for testers so they are aware of it. This is the Alpha
4 page:

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha4

Workaround:

$ sudo apt-get install aptitude

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-08-30 Thread Harvey Muller
Regarding my previous comment above:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/246269/comments/11

When I made the comment above, I was working within a system I had
personally built by hand. I manually built the kernel, klibc, and v86d.
It of course worked perfectly in that environment. I assumed WRONGLY
that since v86d was now being shipped in Ubuntu that it should work
there too.

I am now testing an installation on a Dell Inspiron 1420, using the
20080829 daily-live amd64 desktop (Alpha 5) iso which includes kernel
version 2.6.27. I can confirm that uvesafb DOES NOT work in this
environment. This is documented in the Debian v86d readme. Uvesafb
will not work in Ubuntu until Debian/Ubuntu begin shipping v86d built
against klibc. Or the user successfully builds v86d against klibc
themselves.

uvesafb will not work during boot while v86d is built against glibc. I
apologize for the previous noise.

[Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)

2008-08-30 Thread Harvey Muller
Results of testing on a Dell Inspiron 1420. Installed 20080829 daily-
live amd64 desktop (Intrepid Alpha 5) with kernel 2.7.27.

I am unable to reproduce the problem. I performed the installation,
switched the Caps Lock/Ctrl keys and spent 10 minutes trying to get an
unwanted key repeat. Continual use will confirm it is resolved.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-08-15 Thread Harvey Muller
Andre,

Your problem is most likely due to using incorrect modes on the kernel
parameter line, and not a confirmation of the bug. The documentation in
the kernel describes the correct method (Documentation/fb/uvesafb.txt):

video=uvesafb:1024x768-32,mtrr:3,ywrap

The specific mode that you use would depend on your hardware and
supported modes. On an Inspiron 1420 with integrated Nvidia 8400M GS
graphics this mode works like a champ:

video=uvesafb:1440x900,mtrr:3,ywrap

The documentation also describes how you may determine supported modes,
note that v86d must be properly installed and the uvesafb module loaded:

$ less /sys/bus/platform/drivers/uvesafb/uvesafb.0/vbe_modes

If the uvesafb.0 directory is not present, then you can assume that you
have not properly installed v86d and/or loaded the uvesafb module.

Once you have the correct mode, and v86d is installed and you are still
having problems at boot, then you should suspect a problem with the
initramfs. At this point I would guess the v86d executable is probably
missing from the initramfs.

In the last case, I would return and report the issue.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 249259] Re: linux-image-2.6.24-19.36 breaks suspend

2008-07-29 Thread Harvey Muller
Chris,

I get the problem with linux-backports-modules, also. But not as
frequently. I'm stumped as to what is causing it.

The problem started about the same time I was using dosemu (learning
assembly from book that uses dos tools), and had to use the vmmap fix.
So I thought that might have been the problem too, but it occurs during
sessions where I haven't used dosemu.

I'm going to uninstall linux-backports-modules for a few days, and will
report whether the frequency increases, or not. The oops definitely
only occurs after frequent (3+) suspends.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 249259] Re: linux-image-2.6.24-19.36 breaks suspend

2008-07-18 Thread Harvey Muller
Chris,

I spoke too soon. I got the kernel oops again last night.

But I cannot now replicate the bug at will.

I'm going to test frequently today with the rfkill switch off, to see if
it is possible to isolate to the wireless interface and driver.

I'm testing that specifically because of the messages related to iwl4965
near the end of the oops.

Thanks,

Harvey

[Bug 249259] Re: linux-image-2.6.24-19.36 breaks suspend

2008-07-17 Thread Harvey Muller
Chris,

On a hunch today, I tested to see if the breakage occured with hibernate
also. It did not.

Then retested suspend. It suspended and resumed normally. The only
difference between yesterday and today, is that yesterday I uninstalled
linux-backports-modules-hardy which provided a fix for the missing
iwl4965 wifi led.

I noticed afterwards that the wifi led worked without the backports
module, so the upgrade to .36 must have included something that fixed
that.

I believe the problem was occuring because of the upgraded kernel image,
and the backports modules. I could test this by downgrading to .34, but
I do not know how to do that.

I've reinstalled backports modules to try and recreate the problem, but
cannot now replicate it.

I have repeatedly attempted to recreate the problem today but cannot.

There were additional updates today, but none that should have affected
the issue.

Since I cannot replicate the problem today, it is probably safe to close
this bug.

Thanks for your time!

Harvey

[Bug 249558] [NEW] snd-hda-intel module breaks pc speaker

2008-07-17 Thread Harvey Muller
Public bug reported:

The pc speaker works, evidenced by beeps whenever bios detects an error
during startup, or when booting directly into FreeDOS. But it does not
work when Ubuntu is loaded.

Research shows that this is related to the snd-hda-intel module, and
related to the Alsa project. There is a bug reported at the alsa
project for hardware similar to mine:

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3716

I've attached the appropriate alsa information, using the utils_alsa-
info.sh from the Alsa Project.

There are no known workarounds in Ubuntu at this time. This link
describes potential workarounds that depend on packages that are not in
Ubuntu repositories at this time:

Harvey

[Bug 249259] [NEW] linux-image-2.6.24-19.36 breaks suspend

2008-07-16 Thread Harvey Muller
Public bug reported:

Suspend / Hibernate previously worked like a champ. Today's upgrade from
linux-image-2.6.24-19.34 to clip.36 (linux
-image-2.6.24-19-generic_2.6.24-19.36_amd64) breaks suspend into two pieces.
It worked perfectly yesterday.

The console freezes reporting a bunch of bad news. The only way to
recover is to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete twice, or perform a hard reboot. The
laptop will no longer return successfully from suspend.

Attached is an excerpt from syslog that shows what is happening and is
representative of the screen as it ceases to go further.

Any questions or requests will be returned promptly.

Harvey
