[Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-09-05 Thread Hayden Clark
Sorry I was not clear enough.
When I said "Filled with" I meant that they were the files occupying space. I'm
sorry if that gave the idea that the corresponding vmlinuz-* files weren't
present - it was just that in terms of bytes occupied, the initrd files are the
big ones.

As you can see from the directory listings, this has been a problem,
and, since I'm using a Lenovo Thinkbook 15, I used the OEM kernel
install. I probably followed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/OEMKernel to
install it and it fixed my audio problems.

When removing kernels, I followed the instructions on the
RemoveOldKernels page once I found them.

What this bug is about is that when you somehow get a full /boot (from
whatever cause), the updates stop working. Since /boot is a finite
resource, it would be nice if the system could recover either
automatically, or in an easy-to-initiate way.

Thank you for my free operating system :-)

Ok, did it.
That's freed up a load of space.
Where would I file the bug about having two sets of kernels?

2021-09-01 Thread Hayden Clark
I've not yet found a way to make a USB boot that would allow me to start
the machine in the event of something going wrong. Without a plan to
revert the change, I'm a bit nervous. I know it *should* work fine - but
I don't want to suddenly have an unbootable laptop I can't rescue.

This happens for me on 20.04 LTS when the file being copied has a colon

file copy process, and in the end, the file is not copied to the

[Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-07-22 Thread Hayden Clark
I managed to get some free space back on /boot.
I'm posting this in the hopes that what I did may inform any fixing process.
1) List kernels with `dpkg -l | tail -n +6 | grep -E 'linux-image-[0-9]+'`
2) Delete the oldest initrd with update-initramfs -d -k 5.8.0-59-generic. There
was now 111Mb free on /boot
3) Run `linux-purge -f`. This did nothing, but it output (presumably from
running apt) a "The following packages were automatically installed and are no
longer required" message
4) Run `apt autoremove`. This removed some kernels and initrd files.

Now I have 256Mb free.

This would be easier if /boot was a little larger. The install process
gives you the choice of "totally automatic" and "you're on your own,
buddy!" when partitioning. One neat trick the old Centos install has was
to allow you to pre-load the manual partitioning scheme with the
default, which you could then modify.

[Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-07-03 Thread Hayden Clark
This was a fresh install of 20.04. I enabled encryption as it's a work laptop.
I don't think I have logs - just the failure due to /boot being full on the
update UI.
I then followed the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RemoveOldKernels under "Safely remove old
kernels" so I could complete the update.

There were no /boot/initrd.img-*.old-dkms files, just kernels and
initrds corresponding to the kernels.

/boot is about 700Mb. More space is taken as both the -generic and -oem
kernels are being installed, even though I'd prefer the -oem ones.

Just ran in to this on Ubuntu 20.04, with an encrypted root partition. The
partition layout is the one automatically generated when you install and ask
for root partition encryption - I didn't mess with it.
Drive is 512Gb NVME
Machine is a Lenovo Thinkbook 15
Kernel 5.8.0-59-generic

The /boot partition is 732Mb, but is filled with initrd.img* files.

I think I see the same bug on Dell Inc. Latitude 7390 2-in-1/0YNG30,
BIOS 1.10.0 07/04/2019

Distributor ID: Pop
Description:Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04
Codename: focal

Observed on the latest four kernel versions:
vmlinuz-5.4.0-7618-generic
vmlinuz-5.4.0-7629-generic
vmlinuz-5.4.0-7634-generic
vmlinuz-5.4.0-7642-generic

I don't know what triggers it. This can occur after boot -- not just
after un-suspending. I think I read that killing NetworkManager is a
workaround, but haven't been able to test that. Though syslog is
flooded, NetworkManager doesn't log at all.

[Bug 1890892] Re: WSL openssh-server incorrect permissions .ssh

2020-08-10 Thread Hayden Barnes
I cannot reproduce this issue.

These are the steps I used to attempt to reproduce:

1. Installed Ubuntu 18.04 from the Microsoft Store.
2. Created a new user on launch.
3. Confirmed openssh-server was installed.
4. Confirmed no .ssh folder existed in ~.
5. Ran $ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 to create keys.
6. Reviewed permissions of the resulting .ssh folder, which are 700, private
key 600, and public key 644.

I suspect that something else may have modified the permissions on
~/.ssh.

We do not modify permissions on openssh for WSL anywhere in the image
build or Windows unpacking process, it will have the default permissions
from the openssh-server package.

on 20.04 wsl:

same on 16.04 wsl

I don't think /var/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/release-upgrade-available can be
created because /var/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/ belongs to root.

This works fine in containers where users are privileged by default but
runs into an issue when WSL starts as an unprivileged user.

Users are not going to invoke motd with sudo normally and this error is
confusing to inexperienced users so it should be fixed.

[Bug 1872879] Re: update to land on ff-main before release

2020-04-14 Thread Hayden Barnes
I concur on the urgency of these fixes at this late date.

wslu is a distinguishing feature of Ubuntu on WSL. It is important to
address these bugs in 20.04.

callmepk is the upstream author of wslu so I have confidence in his
patches.

I am running a build from callmepk's branch and have not encountered any
issues in my testing.

We will continue testing as this moves through the review process.

RE: [Bug 1869448] Re: Applications installed via snap install do not appear in LXQt menu

2020-03-28 Thread Hayden Barnes
Thank you for trying.

I think it may have something to do with installing lubuntu-desktop on
an Ubuntu Sever image with other DEs at the same time.

If I get around to it I will see if I can reproduce it in isolation and
if so re-open.

Since my upgrade today to 19.10 I am affected by the same bug, but with
different hardware

Subsystem: Intel Corporation Cannon Point-LP CNVi [Wireless-AC]

Tried backport-iwlwifi-dkms and the old kernel, none of which helped, so
I'm using the 11n_disable workaround as well for the time being.

.plt.sec section also, and they work just fine. Also compiling a hello.c
with -fcf-protection works. Because of course it does. The only other
new section in there (Disco gzip has 27 sections, Eoan has 29) is
.note.gnu.property. No joy after stripping that either. Meh. It's not
.note.ABI-tag; I stripped that as a WAG right after this issue was
posted. Which is all a long description of things that don't work. Next
thing to try would be to grab the apt-source, try to build a broken
binary, and then try to guess what makes gzip so special (contrast say
/bin/ls).

[Bug 1843479] [NEW] gzip in Ubuntu Eoan results in Exec format error on WSL1

2019-09-10 Thread Hayden Barnes
Public bug reported:

Summary:

Running gzip on WSL1 results in the following error:

$ gzip
-bash: /bin/gzip: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

What I expect to happen:

gzip executes correctly on WSL1.

What happens instead:

gzip fails with an Exec format error.

Notes:

I suspect a change in how gzip is being built for Eoan is causing issues
with ELF parsing on the WSL1 translation layer. For example:

On Disco with gzip 1.9-3:

$ file /bin/gzip
/bin/gzip: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
BuildID[sha1]=efa859c26eaf8e035efe9a139361e2a60cd17b3e, stripped

On Eoan with gzip 1.10-0ubuntu3:

$ file /bin/gzip

Eoan ships with gzip 1.10, while Disco ships with gzip 1.9, but I do not
believe this is an issue in 1.10 because this error does not occur when
building gzip from GNU project source on Ubuntu Eoan.

Justifications:

WSL1 will need to be patched in future Windows builds for this change in
ELF. However that patch will likely not be backported to older builds of
Windows, including Windows Enterprise/Server 2019.

To ensure Eoan can run on current and older builds of Windows Ubuntu
should consider looking at how it's building gzip and see if it can be
made to 'play nice' until WSL1 can be updated.

This was originally reported here:

[Bug 1579978] Re: upgrade to 1:7.2p2-4ubuntu1 fails on ubuntu server

2019-06-21 Thread Hayden-haydentech
For me, the root cause of this was systemd's inability to create
temporary files. I would get a ton of messages similar to "Unsafe
symlinks encountered in /var/run/sshd, refusing." in the systemd log,
By changing my system root directory (i.e. /) to be owned by root, it
fixed all these problems, included the resultant sshd problem.
Previously / was owned by my user and group somehow.

[Bug 1774728] [NEW] Installing youtube-dl on ubuntu minimal brings in far too many extraneous dependencies

2018-06-01 Thread Hayden
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic
Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic

Expected results:

sudo apt-get install youtube-dl will install a reasonable number of
dependencies for a terminal-based application on a minimal ubuntu
installation.

Actual results:

sudo apt-get install youtube-dl suggests a number of extraneous
dependencies.

There should be no need for adwaita-icon-theme, qt5-gtk-platformtheme,
and libxrandr2 on a machine with no X.

2018-05-30 Thread Hayden
According to https://github.com/marchom:

"The problem comes from the install/remove scripts trying to do service
ebtables stop and failing. You can see this by trying to stop ebtables
manually."
https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1761#issuecomment-392575807

The temporary workaround is an edit made to /etc/init.d/ebtables. Id.

Another workaround has also been posted.
https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1761#issuecomment-392578042.

You can also simply mark ebtables to hold in apt.

#2 might still be issues with snap creation, and your fix may work, I am
now focusing on issue #3, getting snap to build with the Meson plugin.

If I run into any issues, I will open a separate bug ticket. Thank you.

[Bug 1766101] Re: Snapcraft not handling cmake nested builds, not including build script files in snap, and dependency issues with meson builds

[Bug 1766086] [NEW] [needs-packaging] feedreader

2018-04-22 Thread Hayden
Public bug reported:

[needs-packaging] feedreader

FeedReader is a modern desktop application designed to complement
existing web-based RSS accounts.

FeedReader supports Feedbin, feedly, FreshRSS, InoReader, OwnCloud, The
Old Reader, Tiny Tiny RSS, and local RSS.

FeedReader can save to Instapaper, Paper, Wallabag, Telegram, and
Twitter.

FeedReader is a more up-to-date compliment to Liferea, whose development
has slowed and support for web services like InoReader have broken.

URL: https://jangernert.github.io/FeedReader/

Source: https://github.com/jangernert/FeedReader

License: GPL3

Notes:

A FeedReader package is available in Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch, and Solus.

Only a broken Flatpak is available for Debian/Ubuntu though.

I have struggled to create a working snap of the project, see
https://github.com/sirredbeard/FeedReader/commits/master/snap/snapcraft.yaml

I was finally able just to write an install shell script for Ubuntu, see
https://github.com/jangernert/FeedReader/blob/master/scripts/install_ubuntu.sh

[Bug 1702910] Re: System freeze after in6_dev_finish_destroy errors

2017-09-19 Thread Major Hayden
There's a discussion here possibly about the same problem:

  https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/801533/

And they referred to this patch:

  https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/commit/?id=242d3a49a2a1a71d8eb9f953db1bcaa9d698ce00

The changes look like they line up with the call trace order, but I
could be wrong.

Thanks for the deep dive, Elvis! :) Is it possible to adjust some of
these settings in the Ubuntu packages, or is just the way it will be
going forward?

[Bug 1691174] [NEW] Kernel 4.4.0-64 fails to provide /dev/dri/card0 for Radeon card

2017-05-16 Thread Hayden-haydentech
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 4.4.0-63 to 4.4.0-64, X.org will no longer load my
Radeon card and I am presented with a low-res fallback desktop.
Reverting to the 4.4.0-63 kernel restores ability of X.org to load the
Radeon driver.

I receive the following message in Xorg.0.log:

[Bug 1638695] Re: Python 2.7.12 performance regression

2016-11-10 Thread Major Hayden
Thanks for confirming that, Matthias. Testing with GCC 4.8 seemed to
yield (mostly) better results. I put the data into a Google Sheet:

  https://goo.gl/9gW82j

Out of the 10 pyperformance tests:

  * 3 tests were actually faster with python compiled w/gcc-4.8
  * 4 tests were slightly slower (but within 5%)
  * 3 tests were ~ 20-25% slower

Overall, these numbers look quite a bit better.

I can try that. Just to be clear, you're suggesting to do the
following:

1) Install gcc-4.8 on 16.04
2) Compile 2.7.12 with gcc-4.8 on 16.04
3) Re-run tests

Did I get that right?

[Bug 1638695] Re: Python 2.7.12 performance regression

2016-11-03 Thread Major Hayden
Hello Matthias,

I'm sorry for the confusion there. What I meant is that I compiled
2.7.12 on 14.04 and found that it had the same performance as 2.7.6
(from the default Ubuntu python package) on 14.04. I also loaded
Xenial's kernel on the 14.04 installation and found no performance
difference either.

The problem seems to be unique to 2.7.12 on 16.04.

[Bug 1638695] [NEW] Python 2.7.12 performance regression

2016-11-02 Thread Major Hayden
Public bug reported:

I work on the OpenStack-Ansible project and we've noticed that testing
jobs on 16.04 take quite a bit longer to complete than on 14.04. They
complete within an hour on 14.04 but they normally take 90 minutes or
more on 16.04. We use the same version of Ansible with both versions of
Ubuntu.

After more digging, I tested python performance (using the 'performance'
module) on 14.04 (2.7.6) and on 16.04 (2.7.12). There is a significant
performance difference between each version of python. That is detailed
in a spreadsheet[0].

I began using perf to dig into the differences when running the python
performance module and when using Ansible playbooks. CPU migrations (as
measured by perf) are doubled in Ubuntu 16.04 when running the same
python workloads.

I tried changing some of the kerne.sched sysctl configurables but they
had very little effect on the results.

I compiled python 2.7.12 from source on 14.04 and found the performance
to be unchanged there. I'm not entirely sure where the problem might be
now.

We also have a bug open in OpenStack-Ansible[1] that provides additional
detail. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

[Bug 1413446] Re: Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04

2015-02-18 Thread Major Hayden
@Andon-2 -- I wish I had better news. :/

Long story short, I was able to build a 3.19-ish kernel with some
additional ASoC patches earlier this week and the card showed up on the
I2S bus with full input/output capabilities. However, whenever I played
sounds, I never heard anything. PulseAudio showed data going into the
card (signal levels were moving), but nothing was heard via speakers or
headphones. I dug into amixer to figure out if something needed to be
unmuted or an amplifier switched on and found nothing.

I tried with a newer kernel last night but there are some serious hard
lockup bugs in the pre-3.20 patches. I'm now kicking myself for not
saving the kernel branch that I had the other night. :/

The contact at Realtek feels that there's either a BIOS update required
or one small option on the card isn't enabled. I'd like to test again
but the kernel is a bit of a mess as of when I tested it last night.
Hacking DSDT's won't fix the issue according to someone who has much
more knowledge about ACPI tables than I do.

TL;DR:
  - Waiting on 3.20-rc1
  - Card shows up, can't hear anything
  - Realtek gave me some stuff to test

[Bug 1416601] Re: touchpad does not respond to tap-to-clicks in I2C mode in Ubuntu 15.04 on 2015 XPS 13 (9343)

2015-02-06 Thread Major Hayden
Done with the git bisect. It's somewhere in the late days of 3.17 and
early days of 3.18. Here's the RHBZ with the patch:

  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1188439#c25

I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than me around this part of the
kernel can make sense of it. If I pull the patch, the touchpad works
extremely well (see RHBZ entry for more).

I'll be firing up a kernel bisect this weekend to see if I can find the
issue. From multiple reports (incuding some in the RHBZ[1]), 3.16 works
and 3.17 has issues. 3.18 and 3.19-rc7 have no improvements.

So 3.18 didn't have any touchpad freeze or tapping issues? I've tested
3.18.3 and 3.18.5 on Fedora and they have the freezes. I'm wondering if
something broke between 3.18.0 and 3.18.3. Do you have any additional

FWIW, this issue happens for me on the same hardware on Fedora. Already

I cannot see the bug that this issue was marked a duplicate of. I
believe this may be a mistake.

[Bug 1200816] [NEW] ldap server guide has issue when copying and pasting Replication and TLS section step 3

2013-07-12 Thread Collin Hayden
Public bug reported:

When I go to the section Replication and TLS

3. On the Consumer,

Configure TLS for Consumer-side replication. Modify the existing
olcSyncrepl attribute by tacking on some TLS options. In so doing, we
will see, for the first time, how to change an attribute's value(s).

Create the file consumer_sync_tls.ldif with the following contents:

and try to copy and paste the following into a ldif text file:

dn: olcDatabase={1}hdb,cn=config
replace: olcSyncRepl
olcSyncRepl: rid=0 provider=ldap://ldap01.example.com bindmethod=simple
 binddn=cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com credentials=secret
searchbase=dc=example,dc=com
 logbase=cn=accesslog
logfilter=((objectClass=auditWriteObject)(reqResult=0))
 schemachecking=on type=refreshAndPersist retry=60 + syncdata=accesslog
 starttls=critical tls_reqcert=demand

It adds addtional characters and ajust spacing because of the html
formatting in the last line. When you try to import it into the
database, you will get a syntax error and it won't work. I monkey'd
with this file for over and hour and finally ended up typing it out by
hand and referenced the top replication section which worked. It
appears it needs a space at the end of each line in order to be imported
properly.

I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I expected to copy and paste and import
just like the rest of the doc. Everything else worked great. This will
hinder people from getting the TLS to work, since it will concatenate
the accesslog and starttls together with no whitespace.

Best Regards,

Collin Hayden
