[Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full
Sorry I was not clear enough. When I said "Filled with" I meant that they were the files occupying space. I'm sorry if that gave the idea that the corresponding vmlinuz-* files weren't present - it was just that in terms of bytes occupied, the initrd files are the big ones. As you can see from the directory listings, this has been a problem, and, since I'm using a Lenovo Thinkbook 15, I used the OEM kernel install. I probably followed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/OEMKernel to install it and it fixed my audio problems. When removing kernels, I followed the instructions on the RemoveOldKernels page once I found them. What this bug is about is that when you somehow get a full /boot (from whatever cause), the updates stop working. Since /boot is a finite resource, it would be nice if the system could recover either automatically, or in an easy-to-initiate way. [Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full
I managed to get some free space back on /boot. I'm posting this in the hopes that what I did may inform any fixing process. 1) List kernels with `dpkg -l | tail -n +6 | grep -E 'linux-image-[0-9]+'` 2) Delete the oldest initrd with update-initramfs -d -k 5.8.0-59-generic. There was now 111Mb free on /boot 3) Run `linux-purge -f`. This did nothing, but it output (presumably from running apt) a "The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required" message 4) Run `apt autoremove`. This removed some kernels and initrd files. Now I have 256Mb free. This would be easier if /boot was a little larger. The install process gives you the choice of "totally automatic" and "you're on your own, buddy!" when partitioning. One neat trick the old Centos install has was to allow you to pre-load the manual partitioning scheme with the default, which you could then modify. ** Attachment added: "Directory listing for /boot" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1678187/+attachment/5512855/+files/slash-boot-contents-after-fix.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1678187 Title: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1678187/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This was a fresh install of 20.04. I enabled encryption as it's a work laptop. I don't think I have logs - just the failure due to /boot being full on the update UI. I then followed the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RemoveOldKernels under "Safely remove old kernels" so I could complete the update. There were no /boot/initrd.img-*.old-dkms files, just kernels and initrds corresponding to the kernels. /boot is about 700Mb. [Bug 1843479] Re: gzip in Ubuntu Eoan results in Exec format error on WSL1
>From the WSL issues page: > Now, thing is, all of the new binaries (f.e. /bin/ls) have that .plt.sec section also, and they work just fine. Also compiling a hello.c with -fcf-protection works. Because of course it does. The only other new section in there (Disco gzip has 27 sections, Eoan has 29) is .note.gnu.property. No joy after stripping that either. Meh. It's not .note.ABI-tag; I stripped that as a WAG right after this issue was posted. Which is all a long description of things that don't work. Next thing to try would be to grab the apt-source, try to build a broken binary, and then try to guess what makes gzip so special (contrast say /bin/ls). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1843479 Title: gzip in Ubuntu Eoan results in Exec format error on WSL1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gzip/+bug/1843479/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1843479] [NEW] gzip in Ubuntu Eoan results in Exec format error on WSL1
Public bug reported: Summary: Running gzip on WSL1 results in the following error: $ gzip -bash: /bin/gzip: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error What I expect to happen: gzip executes correctly on WSL1. What happens instead: gzip fails with an Exec format error. Notes: I suspect a change in how gzip is being built for Eoan is causing issues with ELF parsing on the WSL1 translation layer. For example: On Disco with gzip 1.9-3: $ file /bin/gzip /bin/gzip: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, BuildID[sha1]=efa859c26eaf8e035efe9a139361e2a60cd17b3e, stripped On Eoan with gzip 1.10-0ubuntu3: $ file /bin/gzip /bin/gzip: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, BuildID[sha1]=bc0f5994544c2a469d04c914bf4bf44b4ded6040, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, stripped Eoan ships with gzip 1.10, while Disco ships with gzip 1.9, but I do not believe this is an issue in 1.10 because this error does not occur when building gzip from GNU project source on Ubuntu Eoan. Justifications: WSL1 will need to be patched in future Windows builds for this change in ELF. However that patch will likely not be backported to older builds of Windows, including Windows Enterprise/Server 2019. To ensure Eoan can run on current and older builds of Windows Ubuntu should consider looking at how it's building gzip and see if it can be made to 'play nice' until WSL1 can be updated. Hello Matthias, I'm sorry for the confusion there. [Bug 1638695] [NEW] Python 2.7.12 performance regression
Public bug reported: I work on the OpenStack-Ansible project and we've noticed that testing jobs on 16.04 take quite a bit longer to complete than on 14.04. They complete within an hour on 14.04 but they normally take 90 minutes or more on 16.04. We use the same version of Ansible with both versions of Ubuntu. After more digging, I tested python performance (using the 'performance' module) on 14.04 (2.7.6) and on 16.04 (2.7.12). There is a significant performance difference between each version of python. That is detailed in a spreadsheet[0]. I began using perf to dig into the differences when running the python performance module and when using Ansible playbooks. CPU migrations (as measured by perf) are doubled in Ubuntu 16.04 when running the same python workloads. I tried changing some of the kerne.sched sysctl configurables but they had very little effect on the results. I compiled python 2.7.12 from source on 14.04 and found the performance to be unchanged there. I'm not entirely sure where the problem might be now. We also have a bug open in OpenStack-Ansible[1] that provides additional detail. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! [Bug 1413446] Re: Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04
@Andon-2 -- I wish I had better news. :/ Long story short, I was able to build a 3.19-ish kernel with some additional ASoC patches earlier this week and the card showed up on the I2S bus with full input/output capabilities. However, whenever I played sounds, I never heard anything. PulseAudio showed data going into the card (signal levels were moving), but nothing was heard via speakers or headphones. I dug into amixer to figure out if something needed to be unmuted or an amplifier switched on and found nothing. I tried with a newer kernel last night but there are some serious hard lockup bugs in the pre-3.20 patches. I'm now kicking myself for not saving the kernel branch that I had the other night. :/ The contact at Realtek feels that there's either a BIOS update required or one small option on the card isn't enabled. I'd like to test again but the kernel is a bit of a mess as of when I tested it last night. Hacking DSDT's won't fix the issue according to someone who has much more knowledge about ACPI tables than I do. TL;DR: - Waiting on 3.20-rc1 - Card shows up, can't hear anything - Realtek gave me some stuff to test -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1413446 Title: Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1413446/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1416601] Re: touchpad does not respond to tap-to-clicks in I2C mode in Ubuntu 15.04 on 2015 XPS 13 (9343)
Done with the git bisect. It's somewhere in the late days of 3.17 and early days of 3.18. Here's the RHBZ with the patch: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1188439#c25 I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than me around this part of the kernel can make sense of it. I'll be firing up a kernel bisect this weekend to see if I can find the issue. [Bug 1200816] [NEW] ldap server guide has issue when copying and pasting Replication and TLS section step 3
Public bug reported: When I go to the section Replication and TLS 3. On the Consumer, Configure TLS for Consumer-side replication. Modify the existing olcSyncrepl attribute by tacking on some TLS options. In so doing, we will see, for the first time, how to change an attribute's value(s). Create the file consumer_sync_tls.ldif with the following contents: and try to copy and paste the following into a ldif text file: dn: olcDatabase={1}hdb,cn=config replace: olcSyncRepl olcSyncRepl: rid=0 provider=ldap://ldap01.example.com bindmethod=simple binddn=cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com credentials=secret searchbase=dc=example,dc=com logbase=cn=accesslog logfilter=((objectClass=auditWriteObject)(reqResult=0)) schemachecking=on type=refreshAndPersist retry=60 + syncdata=accesslog starttls=critical tls_reqcert=demand It adds addtional characters and ajust spacing because of the html formatting in the last line. When you try to import it into the database, you will get a syntax error and it won't work. I monkey'd with this file for over and hour and finally ended up typing it out by hand and referenced the top replication section which worked. It appears it needs a space at the end of each line in order to be imported properly. I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I expected to copy and paste and import just like the rest of the doc. Everything else worked great. This will hinder people from getting the TLS to work, since it will concatenate the accesslog and starttls together with no whitespace.
