[Bug 1053933] [NEW] Feature Freeze Exception - inclusion of OpenERP (quantal)

2012-09-21 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Public bug reported:

OpenERP is a powerful Enterprise Resource Planning application. It
includes many functions that will be of great use to small and medium
businesses running Ubuntu, including Sales, CRM, Project management,
Warehouse management, Manufacturing, Financial management and Human
Resources.

The package has previously been included in Debian (and synced to
Ubuntu) but was stuck at an old version (5.0.15) for several years and
became neglected. It was finally removed completely after oneiric.

With this upload we (the Canonical Enterprise Applications Team) are
proposing to take ownership of the package going forward, making sure
bugs will be triaged and fixes applied, giving it the distribution Love
that it deserves! In preparing this package we have also worked with
Dmitrijs Ledkovs (Debian and Ubuntu dev) to ensure that 6.1 will also be
available in Debian.

OpenERP upstream are big supporters of the Ubuntu ecosystem - they
generally deploy on Ubuntu, run their own systems on Ubuntu and use
Launchpad for all their development. They previously provided an Ubuntu
.deb from their website, but this did not conform to all Ubuntu
packaging standards. Having a native package in Ubuntu will allows us in
the Ubuntu community to make future fixes and enhancements that are
immediately compatible with core Ubuntu and get these applied upstream
with much less friction that we have had. We can also now proceed with
writing a juju charm for deployment that uses a native package rather
than a branch. Doing it this way also makes the juju charm more broadly
useful.

Improvements from v5.0 to v6.1:

 * The web interface was rewritten from scratch making it much cleaner and more
responsive

 * The OpenERP service was converted to a WSGI-compliant framework

 * Combining the web and backend services into a single OpenERP service

 * Introduction of new configuration wizards to simplify the initial
setup for new users

Improvements in the packaging:
=
The .deb provided by upstream on their website had a range of issues, now fixed
with this native package:

 * Files weren’t copied to the standard directories. All the openerp
files are now copied inside /usr/share/openerp

 * They were including some files like .dll, .exe and .msi that are not
re-distributable by us.

 * Copyright was not correctly stated and licenses were not all
included.

 * We also made the installation more versatile. First we provide an
openerp-core package without specific configuration or dependencies
which is useful for server installs including juju deployments. Then we
added openerp-desktop that adds postgresql and some connecting config,
giving a one-click desktop experience directly from the Software Centre.

Potential impact on Ubuntu:

 * The OpenERP server uses port 8069 when running, which could potentially
conflict with other web applications. This port is configurable.

 * There are no current packages that depend on openerp. The new
openerp-desktop does depend on postgresql.

Testing:
==
 * OpenERP upstream run a series of automated tests on their nightly builds and
release branches, which is where we have pulled the source from.

 * We are also currently running this version of OpenERP internally in
Canonical. We have about 100 active users on the system, some using it
heavily as their primary work tool.

 * Once in the archive our team will also commit to doing testing of
OpenERP in quantal at each milestone running up to release.

[Bug 361194] Re: Intrepid - Jauntu RC upgrade test fails

2009-04-14 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
The intrepid image I upgraded from was not fully up-to-date. Starting
from the original image, updating and doing the upgrade makes the
failures go away. We recommend that people update before upgrading so
this is lower impact than first though. It's not clear to me whether it
should be closed as people are bound to do this and you can only recover
by changes sources.list back to intrepid and updating AFAIU.

Dave Morley has also reported a successful upgrade on real HW.

Perhaps this could be solved by replacing the second tier radio buttons

[Bug 294932] Re: hardware testing checkboxes are poorly placed

2008-12-04 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Yes, this seems like a sensible change. We currently use the natural
language words 'Yes' and 'No' as opposed to the result-centric 'Pass'
and 'Fail', however we might wan to make it more transparent that as
'Yes' will result in a pass. Will this always be the case, or rather can
we commit to insisting that questions should always be formulated in
such a way that it will be the case? If so it might be enough to mention
that in a note at the start of testing. Or perhaps we could use a status
bar that displays 'Yes - Pass', 'No - Fail' and 'Skip - comment
required'.

[Bug 195111] Re: gnuplot is not GNU and not free Software

2008-11-17 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma

IMO the license walks a fine line between freeware and free software. It does
allow you to make changes and distribute them but in an awkward form.

The reason it's problematic is that it doesn't encourage the positive
cycle that you naturally get with other free licenses in that
improvements easily feed into the trunk of the project or alternatively
gives you the right to fork.

It's basically the minix license which allowed the distribution of patch
sets but not the full modified source. You could fork it in theory but
it would have to be forever distributed as a combination of the original
source at the version you forked and an ever-growing set of patches.

That said, debian-legal do consider this to be DFSG-free but consider it
to be a compromise. From the linked Debian bug:

 4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code

The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in
modified form _only_ if the license allows the distribution of patch
files with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at
build time. The license must explicitly permit distribution of software
built from modified source code. The license may require derived works
to carry a different name or version number from the original
software. (This is a compromise. The Debian group encourages all authors
not to restrict any files, source or binary, from being modified.)

And the copyright license for gnuplot does allow you to distribute the
modified version provided that you:

 1. distribute the corresponding source modifications from the
released version in the form of a patch file along with the binaries,

So it does qualify to be in Debian free, even though it IS
GPL-incompatible (e.g. it may not be distributed in binary form with the
GNU readline library linked to it), because of that additional restriction.

I think we should follow Debian here and recognise that while it's not a
standard free software license our own guidelines do allow for it as
Colin points out. Some may not agree with that policy choice but that's
a different matter.

To allow us to move on I'm closing the bug report.

The main issue, which is that we had a menu item with a corresponding

There is still a comparatively minor issue of the superfluous

[Bug 282037] Re: grub-installer defaults to (hd0) which is the installation medium in the case of USB installs

2008-10-19 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Not quite sure I know how I should be testing this, but here is what I
did:

Installed ubuntu 64-bit on a system with two internal drives, a 128GB
SSD and a 500GB drive, both SATA. The system has no internal CD-ROM ATM,
so I used a USB CD drive.

I used a desktop CD and chose to wipe the first disk (entire disk
install). On the last screen of the installer I checked the Advanced
button where I saw that the installer planned to put grub on hd0.

But after doing the actual install the system booted grub from sda (the
SSD). It showed an entry for the 2.6.27-7 kernel on that drive and the
correct 2.6.24 entries from the older system on sdb.

Grub was already installed on sda from the previous install there, but
it was clearly updated on the new install.

Attaching syslog which claims grub was installed on hd0, but then went
on do configure on sda (I'll leave detailed analysis to those who
actually know how to read the logs ;) )

I've seen this on some installs but not all. In cases where the dialog
is missing there does not seem to have been any crashed components as
there are not crash logs. You have to manually click Quit to exit this
installer (and confirm). In other cases you are asked whether you want
to reboot. In both cases the installs are successful and the installed
system starts up fine.

Unmounting and remounting the CD (ISO image via vbox) makes the promt

My procedure for causing the original problem:

1. Install Ubuntu intrepid in vbox

2. shut down and point vbox at the edubuntu add-on CD

3. Booting the machine mounts the CD and places an icon on the desktop,
but right clicking leads to the failures described above

Dave Morley has since tested on real HW and confirms the same situation:

if I insert the cd in a running system I get the addon package dialogue

I get nothing but an icon for the cd

Since it works when people insert the CD into a running system (as we
suggest) I'm lowering the priority and moving the milestone.

[Bug 43438] Re: '1' (size to 1:1) key doesn't work on numeric keypad

2008-09-23 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Actually, I don't agree that this is a bug. You can set custom keyboard
shortcuts in gimp so you could set this up to work the way you wanted,
_or_ you could use the numeric keypad for _different_ commands.

In any case we would not make an Ubuntu-specific change to fix what may
be considered a default. If you still feel strongly that this should be
changed please start a discussion upstream.
