[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-04-21 Thread Herman Resto
Henrik Harmsen's solution worked for me. I'll use this as a temporary
solution until the official fix. Thanks!

[Bug 1876991] Re: Touchpad started appearing both as a touchpad and as a mouse input devices after upgrade to 20.04

2020-07-22 Thread Herman Willems
I also found a trick how to make it work again, you close the lit of my
XPS15 laptop and open is again. Then it works again.

(Maybe helps some people who really need this to work ASAP for
development)

Maybe it has something to do with the Gnome Session? As the touchscreen
works in the login screen, then after login it stops working after "one"
touch. Then closing the lit and the touchscreen works fine again.

I have an XPS-15-9530 Dell laptop.

2020-07-22 Thread Herman Willems
Im not so deep into the technical part but:
Touchscreen does work in the login screen perfectly. After you log in the
touchscreen works for few seconds and after that stops working.

I use the touchscreen for application development testing. So hope this
get solved. Anyone a quick fix for this?

[Bug 602809] Re: add Mouse Click Debounce Feature?

2019-11-13 Thread Herman Grobler
Is there any update on this, I use a MSI mouse and MSI keyboard. The issue is
most notable on my mouse, but I have duplicate key press events on my keyboard
as well.
I'm sure allowing the debounce delay to be configurable will be a quick win
here as JohnWashington suggested.

[Bug 1851239] [NEW] Open Suse locked down the bios of this computer.

2019-11-04 Thread Herman Douglass Brown
Public bug reported:

I installed Open Suse because I had used this OS previously. When I
pulled up the OS for the first time I noticed the OS had changed since
the last time I used it. (been on iPad for a while and wanted to go to
back to an OS I was previously familiar with. I found it had change and
decided to load Unbuntu Mate instead. I found out a 512GB Sata was not
recognized trying to install it. I was able to recover 442GB of that
drive. Puzzled, I just installed Open Mandriva on that. After two days,
I was not able to use the drive. The software kept saying there was no
drive to boot up to because an illegal transaction had taken place. I
went into the bios just to see if I could discern any changes, when I
did, a page came asking if I was going to keep the Opensuse OS, which
had captured the difference between the 442 and the original 512.

The only options was yes or no, I clicked on no because I was installing
the Mandriva OS. That's when the system locked up and I could not use
the F9 option to restore, nor would it let me install another OS from
installation CD or USB device. Now all that happens is the system does
not see a bootable device to pull up. I was more than most disappointed
that an Open Source OS would do this to an non OEM computer. I would
expect this from Windows or Apple, but not an Open Source platform. The
computer is one of the newer Intel NUCi7 system purchased on Amazon.
Because the system is considered broken, I can't get a refund from
Amazon and I can't install any other system and because I had installed
Mandriva over the original Suse OS, the system won't let me use any
thing on it and it can't no pull up the Suse OS anymore. I don't can't
even pull it up to send the requested files list below. I have no idea
what to do from here.

[Bug 1849488] [NEW] kernel panics due to incorrect backport

2019-10-23 Thread Herman Bos
Public bug reported:

This issue results in kernel panics for anyone who uses CephFS.

After some digging we suspect this patch to be cause of the kernel
panics:

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/kernel-ppa/mirror/ubuntu-
bionic.git/commit/?id=eb0ba4bdcf12d9c29b9d3318627ad9ff3aff5471

This patch same patch was applied upstream (4.19) and reverted:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/10/3/862

Quoting: "The backport was incorrect and was causing kernel panics. Revert and
re-apply a correct backport from Jeff Layton."

Also relevant:

https://www.mail-archive.com/ceph-users@lists.ceph.com/msg56549.html

Which basically states this patch should not have been applied to 4.15
at all (not intended for pre-5.2)

Would be great if you guys could revert the patch.
We are stuck on previous kernel versions until this issue is fixed.

[Bug 1789097] Re: winbind does not work after reboot on Mint 19 / Ubuntu 18.04

2018-09-10 Thread Rene Herman
Actually, no, that doesn't work for me. Was expecting it would given the
comments on the samba bug, but, well, no. It *does* work to send HUP
once booted:

rene@t5500:~$ ping WD-NETCENTER
ping: WD-NETCENTER: Name or service not known
rene@t5500:~$ sudo kill -HUP $(systemctl show winbind -p MainPID --value)
rene@t5500:~$ ping WD-NETCENTER
PING WD-NETCENTER (192.168.1.33) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from fs7-netcenter (192.168.1.33): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.86 ms

It seems the networkd-dispatcher script is still too early.

Must by the way also admit I'd maybe not consider it a better workaround
even it if did work than just waiting for network-online.target; nmbd as
mentioned already does as well, so only people with minimal Windows-
networking needs or wants would get any potential benefit from NOT
simply waiting for network-online.target.

[Bug 1789097] Re: winbind does not work after reboot on Mint 19 / Ubuntu 18.04

2018-09-05 Thread Rene Herman
Thanks much for checking. I see; I was expecting this to be an
"immediately obvious" sort of thing to someone with unlike me an actual
clue about samba/winbind, but I have with the above guidance nos
supplied more information.

Specifically, it would appear that your explicitly mentioned "wins
server" configuration will be the difference. I never expected my
/etc/samba/smb.conf to be relevant since mine is fully vanilla, as
provided by the "samba-common" package. It is also attached, but:

rene@t5500:~$ debsums samba-common | grep /usr/share/samba/smb.conf
/usr/share/samba/smb.conf OK
rene@t5500:~$ cmp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
rene@t5500:~$

This is to say that I do not in fact have a WINS server specified; that
judging by the logs my winbind is relying on broadcasts, and bombing out
in that case if started before network-online.target.

There's two logs attached with "debug level = 5", one log.winbindd-
nonworking and one log.winbindd-working, in which "nonworking" is
without /etc/systemd/system/winbind.service (i.e., default) and working
with.

In the nonworking situation the log shows:

So, I guess it's broadcasts that need network-online.target. Seeing as
how relying on those is the vanilla situation I take it this still means
the "winbind" package wants the service file adjustment?

2018-08-29 Thread Rene Herman
Just to add: the issue's the same and fully constant on an Intel Xeon
E5606 @2,13GHz with 8GiB running Mint 19 Cinnamon 64-bit, and an Intel
Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz withj 4GiB running Mint 19 Xfce 64-bit.

That is... it's not a subtle race and I assume anyone will see this if
installing only "winbind" and not the rest of "samba".

[Bug 1789097] Re: winbind does not work after reboot on Mint 19 / Ubuntu 18.04

2018-08-28 Thread Rene Herman
Yes, the network itself comes up fine. "Does not work" simply means that
NetBIOS name resolution is unavailable even after it does; that e.g.
"ping NAS" for "NAS" the NetBIOS name of my, well, NAS, tells me the
name cannot be resolved.

There would not appear to be relevant logs nor configuration files. The
issue is simply that with "After=network.target" rather then "After
=network-online.target" the winbindd daemon is started too early; does
start, but does not work. Needs to be restarted for it to start to work.

I am as mentioned on Linux Mint 19 but would be surprised if this were
not the case on Ubuntu 18.04 itself as well. This is a standard, wired
desktop without even wireless available.

It is easy to reproduce: have the "winbind" and "libnss-winbind"
packages installed but not "samba" itself, enable WINS name resolution
in /etc/nsswitch.con as detailed and as normal, and reboot.

As also mentioned, installing "samba" itself hides the issue by winbind
having a dependency on nmbd and nmbd in turn on network-online.target;
without "samba", we appear to have a simple systemd bootup race, solved
by having it depend on network-online.target itself.

[Bug 1789097] [NEW] winbind does not work after reboot on Mint 19 / Ubuntu 18.04

2018-08-26 Thread Rene Herman
Public bug reported:

[copied from the Linux Mint forum]

Just installed Mint 19 and noticed a WINS name resolution buglet. I
assume this applies to Ubuntu 18.04 as well.

Windows, i.e., NetBIOS, name resolution is on Linux provided for by the
"winbindd" daemon, part of the Samba suite. One does not need either of
the other two Samba daemons "smbd" and "nmbd" when NetBIOS name
resolution is all you need: sudo apt-get install libnss-winbind (which
additionally pulls in "winbind" itself) and adding "wins" before "dns"
to the "hosts" line of /etc/nsswitch.conf is enough.

While this works fine directly after installation it does no more after
reboot due to a systemd unit file dependency issue. The standard
/lib/systemd/system/winbind.service orders itself after "network.target"
and "nmbd.service" which if you do not in fact have "samba" hence
"nmbd.service" installed amounts to "network.target" only. It however
needs "network-online.target" -- itself a dependency of "smbd.service"
if you do have that installed as well.

You can solve things by copying the unit file to its corresponding
directory under /etc and editing it,

  sudo cp /{lib,etc}/systemd/system/winbind.service
  xed admin:/etc/systemd/system/winbind.service

to change the line

  After=network.target nmbd.service

to the two lines

  After=network-online.target nmbd.service
  Wants=network-online.target

After save and reboot you will have NetBIOS name resolution functional
without all of the rest of Samba running.

Note that although this fix is not needed when you do have "samba"
itself installed the above is still fine also the

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

- I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics.
- After upgrading to ubuntu 16.04 LTS using Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD
- (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0). I get an unstable display when I plug in my
- external display through the VGA port. The system keeps cycling through
- the display options using only one display, then both then extended and
- then the other display. This happens every 10-15 seconds.

[Bug 1629917] [NEW] When using external monitor displays become unstable

2016-10-03 Thread Herman
Public bug reported:

I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics.
After upgrading to ubuntu 16.04 LTS using Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD
(DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0). I get an unstable display when I plug in my
external display through the VGA port. The system keeps cycling through
the display options using only one display, then both then extended and
then the other display. This happens every 10-15 seconds.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

Re: [Bug 1470250] [Hyper-V] Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS Generation 2 SCSI Errors on VSS Based Backups

2016-02-09 Thread Herman verschooten
I upgraded a 12.04 LTS to 14.04LTS this weekend and then applied the wily
kernel update as mentioned in your mail.
But I had it go read/only again this morning.

[cid:23B4D2DB-61D4-4F67-8185-1CD378F4D056@hv.local]

I have attached a screen print, if you need more, please let me know.

Op 26 jan. 2016, om 19:48 heeft Joshua R. Poulson
<jopou...@microsoft.com<mailto:jopou...@microsoft.com>> het volgende geschreven:

@f-bosch, @lauwersm, we appreciate your patience. We've looked into
storvsc and vss and have been trying to reproduce the problem, and while
we seem to have lowered the occurrence of the problem, have not
eliminated it.

However, since the last storvsc update, we have fixed a number of issues
in the 3.19 and 4.2 kernels. If not for a rushed CVE, those kernels
would be GA at this point, but they are going into -proposed for release
this weekend.

Since you are on 14.04, I recommend testing on the lts-wily kernels,
especially after the update goes out.

# apt-get install --install-recommends linux-virtual-lts-wily linux-
tools-virtual-lts-wily linux-cloud-tools-virtual-lts-wily

(and reboot)

This will move you to the 4.2 kernel, and after the latest update goes
out, you will be running Hyper-V components from the 4.3 upstream
kernel.

On the next point release of 14.04, the plan is to switch the
recommended kernel to lts-wily anyway, so you are just getting ahead of
the rush a little.

This relates to the VSS "Windows Server Backup" process that kicks off at
midnight on the host and finishes an hour and half later.
Yes, we do have hv_vss_daemon and hv_kvp_daemon running for the correct kernel
version we have. We're currently running kernel version 3.13.0-49-generic #83
on one system and 3.16.0-34-generic #37 on the other. -- We see the same errors
on both.
As a result, we've been hesitant to drop any more ubuntu guests on our 2012R2
hyper-v system because of this. We can stop the backup process and all is
good, but we need nightly backups to image all of our VM's. All the windows
guests have no issues of course. We also have some CentOS based guests
running without issues from what we've seen.

[Bug 1310489] Re: xorg.conf overwritten by booting system

2015-12-09 Thread Rene Herman
Also affected, although nothing to do with a multi-gpu system. Mint 17.3
(64-bit, Cinnamon) and a local /etc/X11/xorg.conf to slow down my crazy-
fast Logitech mouse. Installing fglrx renamed xorg.conf to xorg.conf-
DATE (and put nothing in its place).

Not a huge problem in this case, but certainly rather uncourteous of it.
If this is an involved problem, perhaps at least this specific situation
could be worked around by not moving xorg.conf out of the way if it
isn't being replaced by anything. That is, I imagine it could be
generally troublesome to merge a local configuration, but merging with a
new /empty/ configuration is not. If a new xorg.conf is in fact
generated, maybe a user warning if an old one was also found...

[Bug 1353214] Re: package nvidia-opencl-icd-331 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/etc/OpenCL/vendors/nvidia.icd', which is also in package nvidia-opencl-icd-331-updates

2014-08-06 Thread Herman van der Vaart
This error occurred when trying to get my NVIDIA GTX765M Optimus to work after
the upgrade to 14.04.1.
In 12.04 I used Bumblebee to get it to work. In 14.04 I purged Bumblebee and
tried to install NVIDIA-Prime via:

sudo apt-get purge bumblebee*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime (That part worked)

and the prime-indicator:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install prime-indicator (This did not work

During reboot this error immediately occurs. Nvidia prime does NOT show
the PRIME profiles and the prime-indicator does not appear.

For good order: I checked my PPA settings and I do NOT have the
ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates setting.

Suggestions??

FOLLOW-UP:

I retried to install prime-indicator and that was successful this time.
However: NVIDIA Prime still does NOT show the prime profiles and though the
prime-indicator is now present and allows me to do a quick switch (the X-server
is restarted), the only active graphics is the Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Mobile
graphics.

This is the listing from the prime indicator installation (2nd time). It
is translated from Dutch to English.

[Bug 1314289] Re: [Precise/regression] drbd 8.4.x backport breaks existing clusters

2014-05-31 Thread Vit Herman
Hello,

AFAICT, the same change broke creating named device nodes in /dev via
udev, causing messages like this when running /etc/init.d/drbd reload:

# /etc/init.d/drbd reload
 * Reloading DRBD Configuration
1: Failure: (124) Device is attached to a disk (use detach first)
Command 'drbdsetup-83 1 disk /dev/mapper/MD1-salesnet /dev/mapper/MD1-salesnet
internal --set-defaults --create-device' terminated with exit code 10

Running:
# udevadm test /block/drbd1

I get:
...
spawn_read: '/sbin/drbdadm sh-udev minor-1'(err) 'execvp() failed to exec
drbdadm-83: No such file or directory'
spawn_wait: '/sbin/drbdadm sh-udev minor-1' [18952] exit with return code 20
udev_event_execute_rules: no node name set, will use kernel supplied name
'drbd1'
udev_node_add: creating device node '/dev/drbd1', devnum=147:1, mode=0660,
uid=0, gid=6
...

Giving me only /dev/drbd1, but no /dev/drbd_salesnet (as before) or
/dev/drbd directory. Installing 2:8.4.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 fixed the
problem.

Hopefully it's related, I'm posting it up here in case somebody else
gets bitten by it too.

[Bug 1071530]

2013-02-27 Thread Rene-herman
This specific issue has been fixed (for me, Intel 865G on arch linux) in
mesa-9.1-2 which is at the time of writing in the testing repository.

9.1 does regress with respect to 8.0 (ie, Speed Dreams just crashed on
me, which it didn't use to) but that sort of thing is just business as
usual for older intel. In two releases time, nothing will work anymore
again, so let's count our blessings for now.

Or rather, I guess from the reply one above, let's count the number of
opensuse users -- and prey to god it stays above 1000 so that the pack
of drug-crazed baboons that have been fucking up 3D on older intel on
basically each and every release for multiple years now keeps getting
told so by en entity with a cool corporate presence.

Or something. Go Wayland go.

[Bug 1060435] Re: Evince duplicates a PDF page and omits the next page

2013-01-21 Thread Herman
This bug appeared on my system Ubuntu 12.10, 64 Bit after a recent
update of evince (hadn't been a problem before).

This problem doesn't appear for all pdfs, but many! Here is one where the bug
does appear:
http://arxiv.org/pdf/1205.6214v2

to reproduce it, open the document an scroll down towards the end of a
page, as this is reached, the display of the current page swaps into the
next such that the next page is doubled.

Please give this top priority, it is extremely annoying!

[Bug 1068661] Re: 1002:6740 Unity does not load after installing fglrx-updates Radeon HD 6700M Series

2012-10-28 Thread Tsur Herman
I confirm that Nick Andrick's solution works for me.
I have hybrid ati/intel graphics . downgrading the intel driver through his PPA
as described
in
http://askubuntu.com/questions/202857/cant-install-ati-proprietary-drivers-in-12-10/207270#207270
Solves my problem.
So I suggest you bug fixing ninjas out there focus on that intel driver.

Nick can you post a more detailed step by step instruction's on how to
downgrade the intel driver for those who are not
yet ubuntu savvy?

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2012-08-30 Thread Leonardo Herman
I can fully reproduce it with any window (Unity 5.14.0, Compiz 0.9.7.8 -
default settings) following these steps:

1) Minimize any window
2) Super+W (to show Scale)
3) Super+W (to hide it)
4) Click on the application icon in Launcher or browse to it using Alt+Tab /
Alt+|

Notes:
- Minimizing the blank window and using Scale reverses it.
- This issue does not happen when the app has 2 or more windows (which, again,
triggers Scale)

I hope this helps (=
