[Bug 1970989]

2022-05-15 Thread Jérôme Bouat
I'm describing below an other test with the same physical host and virtual
guest.
I installed the xfce desktop environment (via tasksel) and I uninstalled all
lxqt packages. I disabled the snap user service start (from the xfce session
configuration panel).
Then, the cold start of the deb package application is down in less than 2
seconds (better). Maybe de xfce desktop environment already loaded a few
libraries (libgtk-3-0, ...).
In addition, I measured the used memory (free -k) by comparing the "used"
memory field before launch and a few seconds after the window appeared.
With deb package application : 266 MB.
With snap package application : 397 MB (+49%).
It seems the deb package application saves memory because it is sharing the
libraries with the other applications of the desktop.
Note that I didn't count the used memory by the snap machinery (in case you
wouldn't install snapd with a deb package application).

[Bug 1970989]

2022-05-11 Thread Jérôme Bouat
Below is the test I performed in a Qemu virtual environment.
Host : a Debian host.
Guest : Debian bookworm x86_64, LXQT, deinstalled preload and firefox-esr for
light desktop.

On the guest I installed 2 flavours of the same 100.0 version of Firefox on :
- the snap : 100.0-2 (snap revision 1300) with the other required snaps
(gnome-3-38-2004 0+git.1f9014a rev 99, gtk-common-themes 0.1-59-g7bca6ae rev
1519, core20 20220329 rev 1434)
- the deb package by hand from sid repository : 100.0-1.

Before starting the test, I started for the first time each flavour and
I made the new page empty (no web search, no shortcut or recent
activity).

I performed the below sequence with each flavour :
0. The host is up to date from the day (snap refresh, apt update), no
background task expected, no other application on host and guest desktops.
1. I start AQemu.
2. I launch the virtual machine with Debian bookworm.
3. I login into the guest desktop environment.
4. I wait for roughly 60 s (stopwatch in hand).
5. I launch Firefox by the desktop menu entry and measure the start-up duration
until the window appears.
6. I close Firefox and wait roughly 30s (stopwatch in hand).
7. I launch Firefox again and measure.
8. I close Firefox and wait roughly 30s (stopwatch in hand).
9. I launch Firefox again and measure.

In the case of the deb package application :
5. gives 2.5 s
7. gives 1.7 s
9. gives 1,6 s

In the case of the snap package application :
5. gives 5.9 s
7. gives 4.1 s
9. gives 4.3 s

Public bug reported:

I installed the Jammy Jellyfish version. When I launch firefox, the
delay between my click and the apparition of the window is very long
compared to the behaviour of the previous versions of Ubuntu. The deb

performance regression ?! I don't understand.

Hi, using latest 5.16 kernel version fixed the problem for me. Actually it
was a problem with amdgpu so i'm not sure it is the same for your
architecture but new kernel always comes with latest drivers support. Maybe
tout could give a try ti thé Dev version of Ubuntu 22.04 to see...

[Bug 1916786] Re: weak dependency to libreoffice-sdbc-hsqldb

2021-03-10 Thread Jérôme Bouat
If you keep this dependency weak then Libreoffice Base doesn't work.
Next the user has the feeling that Ubuntu doesn't work.

As a clean workaround, maybe we could change the following packages
dependencies of the ISOs :
- remove libreoffice (=> openjdk isn't pulled anymore)
- add libreoffice-calc
- add libreoffice-draw
- add libreoffice-impress
- add libreoffice-math
- add libreoffice-writer

However, openjdk-11 requires only 171 MB for x86_64.

[Bug 1823076] Re: System wakes up immediately after suspend if Bluetooth is still enabled

2020-07-06 Thread Jérôme de Bretagne
Hi You-Sheng,

Sorry for this very late feedback, I just saw your message a few minutes
ago as I was not subscribed to this bug.

I've now tested your backport of the patches and I can confirm that it
is indeed working on my machine (Dell Latitude 7275).

FYI, I was also pointed out that there is an on-going discussion about suspend
failures following these patches, details here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207629
but I'm not seeing this issue in my case.

Cheers,
Jérôme

[Bug 1882890] [NEW] Cannot boot initrd.img-4.15.0-106-generic on Ubuntu 16.04

2020-06-10 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

Hi,

This morning I applied the latest updates on my Ubuntu 16.04 (kernel
4.15.0-106-generic + intel-microcode 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.0) and
rebooted as usual to boot on the new kernel but the system won't boot:
black screen.

I tried booting the previous kernel 4.15.0-101 and it seems to be the
same : in grub I select the 4.15.0-101 kernel, press enter, a message
"Loading initrd..." is printed but nothing else happens.

Tried even older kenrel 4.4.0-184-generic : same problem, "Loading
initrd...", and nothing happens.

I managed to boot a 4.4.0-142-generic, but bluetooth and wifi are non-
functionnal.

I mounted the /boot partition from a USB rescue drive, and it seems that all
the initrd images that got updated this morning are not bootable anymore :
- initrd.img-4.15.0-106-generic
- initrd.img-4.15.0.101-generic
- initrd.img-4.4.0-184-generic

I tried regenerating the images with update-initramfs but it's the same
: "Loading initrd" message but nothing happens.

[Bug 1823076] Re: System wakes up immediately after suspend if Bluetooth is still enabled

2020-05-12 Thread Jérôme de Bretagne
A fix for this issue is planned for v5.7, included from rc1 up to rc5 so
far, with this patch series:
https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/cover/1208369/ and the 4 commits from
9952d90ea2885d7cbf80cd233f694f09a9c0eaec up to
4867bd007d25a8dfd4ffc558534f7aec8b361789

I had created a bug about this a while ago here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=198993
and I've just confirmed that the patch series is indeed fixing this issue on my
system (a Dell Latitude 7275).

I'm expecting this will cover most/all of the other systems mentioned in
this discussion too. I hope this sharing will be useful for some of you.

Cheers,
Jérôme

[Bug 1836401] [NEW] Multiple monitors reset to default at boot and log logon

2019-07-12 Thread Jérôme Fortin
Public bug reported:

I recently install Kubuntu 19.04 and updated everything.
Those issues where not existent in Kubuntu 18.04 LTS (same machine setup)

EVERY TIME I LOGON IN KDE my monitors positions are reset to some default
settings.
So I have to specify my monitors position each time I open a session. And not
only after a boot or a reboot. It is becoming annoying really fast.

Yes there is a new software asking me what setup I want for my monitors.
At first it seem nice but it turns out that it's asking me every time I
logon. Event when monitors are already plugged in and have not change.

Most of all, it dose not let me set my monitors in the disposition I
would like. For instance top and bottom are not include. And it can only
manage 2 monitors and I have 3. For now I found a way to disable it
since it doesn't help me at all.

This situation is not coming from the fact that I have 3 monitors.
Before setting up my USB to DVI adapter (form Display Link who are
providing Linux drivers) and added a third monitor, I was working with
only 2 for a while. The experience was not good at all. I was and I am
still tempted to go back to 18.04 just to get rid of this annoyance.

With Kubuntu 18.04 my 3 monitors where always working fine. And when I
was unplugging one or tow of them going on the road or when I was
plugging my laptop in the living room or else where to watch a movie or
some thing the system was simply adapting without any intervention. It
almost seem to remember each reoccurring setup. It is not the case
anymore.

Now I have to use the GUI utility each time I logon and when I do
sometting else with my laptop too. And the GUI is toying with me. The
screens representations are acting up playing tag or something whit the
mouse pointer and one an other. A similar issue was present in 18.04 but
some how it got worst. I think I will make an other bug report for this
one.

Solution
At logon all connected monitors should be in clone mode. When ever xorg or kde
manage it.
Then the system should remember how the screen where last time and simply
reload these setting.

A software should only ask me what to do if and when I plug a monitor in a live
session or maybe if a new monitor is detected at boot time or logging time or
if I open it.
And this software should let met position monitors as I would like. Including
distances between monitors as the GUI utility let me do. Well after I manage to
catch those pesky screens and position them in relation to one an other...

Even better
Since laptops or tablets (and sometimes other computers) are not always plug
the same way. I would like to have display profiles to chose from. And have the
suggestion to create a new profile (not erasing the current one) when new
monitors are found. When monitors of current profile are not available it would
also suggest to create a new profile. And when the hardware is corresponding to
a existing profile is present it would simply load it without asking.

Here some example
- Read only profile : Laptop monitor only (on the road)
- Read only profile : Duplicate all screen (for 2 3 4 monitors...)
- Custom : My Workstation (when I'm working in my home office (3 monitors))
- Custom : Client 1 (when I'm working on at a specific client office (2
monitors))
- Custom : Relax (when a plug my laptop on my TV in my living room)
- Custom : TEMP (This one would be for temporary setup use at other client and
friends places)

Well it is my first time reporting a problem here and about Kubuntu.
Hope no one will complain about my English or my method but explain what
I should do different next time. There is improvement that I like in
19.04 and I am hoping for the best.

Thank to the community!

[Bug 1830431] [NEW] linking arm libc instead of thumb for Cortex-M3

2019-05-24 Thread Jérôme Hamm
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 arm-none-eabi-gcc (15:6.3.1+svn253039-1build1)
6.3.1 20170620 and it looks like the selected libc is the ARM one, not
the THUMB one. I first detected this through a BUS FAULT which upon
investigation and disassembly (the .lss file) looks like arm code.
Moreover I tried the following commands:

> arm-none-eabi-gcc -mthumb -mcpu=cortex-m3 --print-file-name=libc.a
/usr/lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/6.3.1/../../../arm-none-eabi/lib/libc.a
^^^ I have seen in another post that when some guy types the same command line
(although for a Cortex-M4), he gets 'thumb' somewhere in the returned path.

> arm-none-eabi-gcc -mthumb -mcpu=cortex-m3 --print-multi-directory
thumb/v7-m

Other libs (for example function __eabi__uidiv) look like thumb code.

I have used
> sudo apt install gcc-arm-none-eabi

More information:
> sudo dpkg -l | grep gcc-arm-none-eabi
ii gcc-arm-none-eabi 15:6.3.1+svn253039-1build1 amd64 GCC cross compiler for

[Bug 1815342] [NEW] Cannot enter password on agetty VT console with linux-image-4.4.0-142

2019-02-10 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

Since the upgrade to linux-image-4.4.0-142, I cannot enter my password
on agetty VT console.

Here is what happens after switching to a VT console with CTRL+ALT+F1:
- agetty is present with the "hostname login: " prompt displayed
- I enter my login and press ENTER
- The "Password: " prompt appears and is immediately followed by a new-line and
a "Login incorrect" message without having the time to enter the password
- Then "hostname login: " prompt appears again but is immediately followed by
"Password: " and a "Login incorrect", and this process repeats until agetty is
respawned or I type CTRL+C
- The agetty seems to be stuck as if the ENTER key was continuously held
pressed, and I cannot enter the password or the subsequents login/password

If I boot on the previous kernel (i.e. linux-image-4.4.0-141), then I
can correctly enter my password on agetty's VT console.

This problem is also present with linux-image-4.15.0-45.

[Bug 1074286] Re: applet should be implemented with a binary executable

2018-10-05 Thread Jérôme
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

After loging into XFCE environment, I see with "top" that /usr/share
/system-config-printer/applet.py consumes 22MB of physical memory, just
  behind X.

Most of the time, the printer applet does nothing and thus wastes
  memory.

I think that this applet should be implemented with a compiler which
create a binary executable instead of writing a python script or python
byte code which will never reach the performances of a binary executable
  (speed and memory).

[Bug 1746871] Re: Postgresql service unit name wrongly cutted

2018-06-11 Thread Jérôme
I gave a quick look at the `/usr/sbin/needrestart` and the problem seems
to be with one (or two) erroneous `if()` statements that performs an
affectation to the `$value` instead of doing a regexp match test.

After applying the attached patch, the `postgresql@9.6-main.service`
service is correctly detected :

--8<--
# needrestart -r l
Scanning processes...

Scanning candidates...

Scanning linux images...

Running kernel seems to be up-to-date.
Services to be restarted:
systemctl restart postgresql@9.6-main.service
No containers need to be restarted.

[Bug 1645555] Re: Dropbear initramfs hook creates authorized_keys file in an invalid folder

2017-07-27 Thread Jérôme Drouet
not so fine to me because it changes ~root directory in a way you can
not predict/reuse in any other hook

for instance :
*
/ # cat /etc/passwd
root:*:0:0::/root-nlmn09:/bin/sh
/ # cd
~# pwd
/root-nlmn09
*

how can we guess the name in other hooks, let's say to put some files in
~root ?

this change seems to be related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=558115 , but other hooks should not use /root as a
mountpoint as described (haven't check if it is still the case)

[Bug 1693850] Re: libzen wasn't compiled with large file support

2017-07-05 Thread Jérôme Martinez
There is no ABI impacting, as it is only internal (communication between the
lib and libc API). libzen API uses 64-bit integers whatever is the presence of
the flag, the flag is only for libc.
And actually, the ABI break would have been seen previously, when the
compilation flag was removed (switch from Automake to CMake), as the flag was
present in previous versions, and it was not the case.

In
https://sourceforge.net/p/mediainfo/discussion/297610/thread/8893b38f/#4075
you can see that a user backported himself the new binary to an old
platform of Debian without API break.

[Bug 1693850] Re: libzen wasn't compiled with large file support

2017-05-28 Thread Jérôme Martinez
> some -D compilation flags that aren't even directly referenced in the
codebase

FYI impact is on the 32-bit libc usage, _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 enabling the libc
file API with "off_t" of 64-bit instead of 32-bit.
No other interaction.

Example of impacted user (+ I got 2 emails with same bug report, no web link):

[Bug 1663889] [NEW] the user invite is coming late

2017-02-11 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

I looked at the bootchart and I wonder why the below units are available before
the user invite of lightdm :
- apt-daily.service
- apt-daily.timer
- anacron-resume.service
- anacron.service
- cron.service
- cups-browsed.service
- cups.path
- cups.service

Since a user needs a few seconds in order to login, I think those
services could be launched while the user is choosing the user name and
typing the password.

[Bug 1662327] Re: apt-daily.service was slowing down one system startup

SSD aren't mandatory.

HDD computers would rarely get updates if they are just started after 6
am and are running only 1 hour in the morning. Basically, the random
time between 6 am and 18 pm will rarely be between 6 and 7 am.

[Bug 1661384] Re: default setting : stop thermald when operating on mains

2017-02-04 Thread Jérôme
Ok thermald doesn't work properly for me. However, it is running when my
powercord is plugged. Moreover thermald has to be launched at system
startup (and thus increases the startup time).

Maybe a better default behaviour could be :
- thermald stopped when the power cord is plugged
- thermald running when the power cord isn't plugged

[Bug 1661724] [NEW] closing the lcd screen after locking makes the laptop sleep

2017-02-03 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

I locked my screen with the padlock button of my Whisker menu (Xubuntu).
The computer seems to be waked for ever with the blank screen. When I
close the lcd screen of my laptop then I note that the computer is going
to sleep.

I would expect nothing more that ensuring that the screen is locked and
that it is shut down.

If I close my LCD without locking my screen, then the screen is shut
down without making my computer sleep.

[Bug 1626053] [NEW] can't access to standards through http://sagaweb.afnor.org/

2016-09-21 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

It seems this web site requires :
- DRM
- FileOpen plugin
- Adobe Reader (it seems that the support ended for GNU/Linux, old versions are
still available).

I'm working in a public organisation which started a slow migration of its
desktop applications since a few years :
- M. Office -> OpenOffice -> LibreOffice
- M. Outlook -> Thunderbird
- IE -> Firefox
- Adobe Reader -> SumatraPDF/Evince
- M. Project -> ProjetLibre

For servers :
- M. file server and printer spooler -> Samba and CUPS

The operating systems are currently :
- for servers : Ubuntu derivative, Debian or CentOS
- for desktops : M. Windows 7 (and a few Ubuntu boxes)

Since this site is using DRM, I can't access to the standards it
provides. I assume my organisation will give up using Ubuntu for desktop
computers if the user can't use this web site.

[Bug 1619933] Re: FFe: Sync mediainfo 0.7.88-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2016-09-05 Thread Jérôme Martinez
@elatllat:

First you don't test with the command line you provided so it is not
possible to know if your issue is related to Matroska; you also don't
provide the content of $F; when the output is empty, this usually means
that the file is not accessible by MediaInfo, not related to Matroska.

Second this issue is not related to this ticket (again: before or after this
ticket is handled, it changes nothing), so it is complicated to manage it. If
you want your issue, not related to this ticket, to be resolved, please open a
new ticket dedicated to this issue on Launchpad or on the upstream tracker
https://github.com/MediaArea/MediaInfoLib/issues because I think that it is not
related to how it is packaged in Ubuntu (if you want to be sure that the issue
is from upstream, you can test https://mediaarea.net/MediaInfo/Download/Ubuntu
packages)
Here, you pollute a ticket with something not related to it and it prevents
both issues (the reason of the ticket + your issue) to be resolved.

[Bug 1619933] Re: FFe: Sync mediainfo 0.7.88-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2016-09-04 Thread Jérôme Martinez
> The version of mediainfo (0.7.82) in Ubuntu (16.04.1) can't read
Matroska

Just tested with mediainfo 0.7.82 in Ubuntu 16.04 amd64 with this command:
mediainfo http://mediaarea.net/temp/a.mkv
and I have a good result (starting with "Format: Matroska") with this
(temporary) online Matroska file.

Same result with mediainfo 0.7.85 in Ubuntu 16.10 beta.

Anyway, even if we have a regression somewhere syncing with current
0.7.88 would not add a regression (it would be there before and after
the sync) and we need to fix this issue at the upstream level.

What do you mean "can't read Matroska"?
I am not aware on any regression about Matroska with any recent version of
MediaInfo library, and we ourselves analyze tons of Matroska files with
MediaInfo on Ubuntu.
Please provide more details (with a sample file).

[Bug 1312966] Re: ssvnc creates a 1x1 window with -scale auto

2016-07-30 Thread Jérôme Poulin
Thanks for the proper patch, I'm not much aware of the steps involved in
deploying submitted patches via Ubuntu launchpad. You're right, our use
case implies most of the time connecting to 1080p display, causing ssvnc
to be unusable using our loader sets autoscale enabled. Otherwise,
since we use SSH tunneling, ssvnc is the best tool for the job.

Again, thanks for improving (rewriting) the patch and comitting it, I'll
give it a try this week.

[Bug 1312966] Re: ssvnc creates a 1x1 window with -scale auto

2016-07-30 Thread Jérôme Poulin
Would you mind adding more details about the problem you encounter?

This patch is currently in use on our corporate repo since Trusty and
has been working correctly in Utopic, Vivid, Wily and still works in
Xenial. It has been tested on Unity, Gnome-Shell and Lxde.

Anyway, right now the unmatched version is completely unusable and I'm
still wondering why this patch has been lingering here so long. Maybe
your advice will help me getting it accepted.

[Bug 1577141] [NEW] shouldn't depend on cron

2016-05-01 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

For most desktop users, their computer doesn't run more than 1 day. Thus
cron can be uninstalled and anacron ensures on next startup that it will
perform the tasks which had past schedule dates.

The cron task is only in /etc/cron.daily could be processed by anacron.
Thus the popularity-contest package shouldn't depend on cron (but maybe
on [cron or anacron]).

[Bug 1571059] Re: Software center repeatedly ask to download an update.

2016-04-15 Thread Jérôme Poulin
Exactly, it seems that after fixing all apt-get update related problems
and rebooting, I don't get this prompt anymore.

I wasn't sure at first that the new software center was related to apt.

I also had a problem with our proxy (apt-cacher-ng) which I had to
upgrade from 0.8 to 0.9.1 (backport) on our Debian Jessie proxy server.

I still get warnings but not failure about signing keys which I'll fix
for our repo but Google's own seems to be problematic too.

It seems the new software center should make the user aware of such
problem.
