[Bug 839480] Re: Dash - When the Dash is open and there is a maximised app in the background, the top bar background should not disappear

2012-03-23 Thread Jay Taoko
I don't understand the images radiance_topbar.png and
ambiance_topbar.png, because there does not seems to be a maximised
window on the desktop. Or are these just mock-ups.

The way we do the rendering of the dash and the panel (Top Bar) is as follows:
1- Capture the background behind the element (dash or top bar) and blur it.
2- Blend the blurred background with the desktop background image average
color. Lately, we have moved to doing blending operation the way Photoshop
blends layer. Both the dash and the top bar use an overlay blending mode. The
average color is the top layer while the blurred background is the bottom layer.
3- A shine effect is applied over the elements.

The continuity between the dash and the top bar is ensured by the fact
that they uses contiguous elements of the background which are blurred.
The shine effect is also continuous between the dash and the top bar.

My understanding is that when a window is maximised on the desktop and
the dash is open, the blurred background should no longer be visible on
the top bar. We can achieve this in step 2 by choosing a normal
blending mode between the two layers. This hides the blurred background
behind the average color layer. And the shine effect is applied normally
in step 3. However we loose the continuity between the top bar and the
dash. Only the continuity of the shine effect remains. Se the attached
screenshot.

Is this the effect we are looking to achieve?

[Bug 841527] Re: Dash very slow with blur in Oneiric beta1[ATI report]

I have tested with a Radeon X1950 Pro. This one use the open source
driver as it is no longer supported by fglrx. I couldn't notice
performance issue with the blur in the dash.

What we are lacking is a tool that would check the performance of the
graphics effects used in Unity. Such a tool is planned but not yet
ready.

For now, if you have system that is showing performance issue in the
dash, I recommend you turn off Active Blur in CCSM or you limit to
Static Blur or No Blur.

If it is only slow because of the blur. It can be deactivated in CCSM:
Ubuntu Unity Plugin Experimental tab Set Dash Blur to No Blur

The consequences of blacklisting is that some systems will fall back to

[Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Need Compiz' Copy to Texture plugin so can display on multi-head layouts bigger than the max GL texture size

2012-02-13 Thread Jay Taoko
I have tested with a Dell mini 9 hooked on an external 1600x1200
monitor.

The display resolution of the dell mini 9 is 1204x600

When I use the gnome display setting and I try to set a configuration
that is not supported (size is too high), I am being warned to choose a
lower resolution for the external monitor. For a system, like the Dell
mini 9, this works fine as I can't expect such a system to have the
resources to drive Unity on an external monitor with 1600x1200
resolution.

I then used xrandr to configure the displays. With xrandr i got similar
results as mentioned in #33. I could get Unity to work with xrandr
provided the external display resolution isn't too high. Xrandr worked
fine for an external resolution of 1024x768. For an external resolution
of 1152x864, the rendering of the display was very slow, which suggest a
software mode. Note that gnome display setting prevent me from setting
an external resolution of 1152x864.

From a user perspective, the preferred display configuration tool is the
gnome display setting. From my experience, it produces the expected
results.

As for using xrandr directly and activating the Copy to Texture plugin
in Compiz, this solution cannot work with Unity for external resolution
that are too high. As state in #32, it would only work fine with
standalone Compiz. Unity has no support for the Copy to Texture plugin
and cannot be expected to work.

I think the Copy to Texture plugin should be deactivated and users
should use the gnome display setting as there preferred display setting
tool.

Xrandr, does the job of configuring the display resolution. But without
any knowledge of the desktop environment memory requirements it cannot
check the ability of the system to support a certain resolution. Yet, it
is very useful tool as a low level display configuration utility.

2011-11-22 Thread Jay Taoko
I have tested a Radeon 9800 which is of the same familly has the Mobility
Radeon 9600 M10 reported in this bug.
The Radeon 9800 runs Unity 3D correctly and unity_support_test does not crash.
I haven't tested this bug in the NX environment as I am not able to do so.
I will mark this bug as fix released. Re-open if the problem still occurs.

[Bug 810182] Re: unity_support_test crashed with SIGSEGV

Many of the duplicate bugs report errors with loading of GLX.
extension GLX missing on display :0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.
Xlib: extension GLX missing on display :0.

Many of the Xorg logs also report error in loading of the Nvidia or
Nouveau driver. I will add a test to detect the presence of GLX on the
system. If the system does not have GLX support, then unity_support_test
will not continue further and the test will fail (but not crash).

[Bug 726033] Re: does not display icons until hovered

2011-11-14 Thread Jay Taoko
We still have the mention of this bug in Nux source code and the fix
that goes with it. To make a test in Nux, I would have to remove the
hack so that upstream can see the bug happen without the fix. Even so, I
am not sure if all the conditions will be there for the bug to be
reproducible outside of Unity, but it is worth a try.

[Bug 810182] Re: unity_support_test crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-10-25 Thread Jay Taoko
This bug is related to the graphics stack. Having 2 gpus on the system,
the graphics stack and all the tools involved have to make sure that the
right opengl drivers are install. Until a fix is done on the graphics
stack side, see if you can make sure that you only have either the Intel
opengl libraries on your system or the other gpu's libraries.

[Bug 810182] Re: unity_support_test crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-10-06 Thread Jay Taoko
Try glxinfo on the system and report what you get. If glxinfo fails,
then there is a problem with the driver installation. You may also run
/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p and report what you get.

@sseitz
Thanks for the report. Do you think you can provide a stack trace of the crash
in unity_support_test.
Also, when did the problem started to appear on your system? Did it started
after an upgrade from Natty to Oneiric or following a recent but progressive
upgrade of your system?

There is a new [] call in IOpenGLSurface::LockRect() that is matched with a
delete [] in IOpenGLSurface::UnlockRect.
In between, the memory that is allocated is passed to a client that writes it.
Could it be that the clients writes beyond the allocated memory area and then
corrupts it? It would help to have a detailed stacktrace.

- the bug cannot be reproduced reliably
- the information provided is not sufficient to track down the issue to a

I have a similar system. Mine is an intel core i3 while the bug was reported on

cannot reproduce the issue so we can rule out a graphics or driver issue.

[Bug 808677] Re: Failed to activate external monitor (dual monitor mode)

2011-09-22 Thread Jay Taoko
I have tested with a fresh install of Oneiric on a intel core i3 system.
I cannot reproduce the issue mentioned.

My internal display is resolution is 1280x800 while my external monitor is
1280x1024. The gnome control panel offers the following resolutions for the
external monitor:
 - 1024x768
 - 800x600

I can run in dual monitor config with my internal resolution maxed at
1280x800 and any of the resolutions above for the external monitor.

The control panel used to propose the option to choose the maximum
resolution of my external monitor (1280x1024) but it doesn't do that
anymore. It has been like that for a month or so. Previously, if I had
tried to use the max resolution of the external monitor, things would
become very slow as if running in software. So I suppose the control
panel is more clever now and only offers resolution that can be
supported.

Please, test with a fresh install and a recent version of Oneiric.

[Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays corrupted with thick slanted lines

2011-08-29 Thread Jay Taoko
There seems to have been some changes in the monitor display setting. As
of today if I plug in an external monitor into my Dell mini 9, the
monitor display settings no longer shows all supported resolutions of
the external monitor. It shows only 800x600 and 1024x768. My external
display support up to 1280x1024.

I am not sure if this is a new development from the driver in order to
reduce the external resolution to something that can be handle properly
by the dell mini 9 GPU.

Can you report if you are getting the same thing on your N10 systems?

[Bug 830949] Re: [Intel N10 Graphics] Plugging in external monitor to VGA port makes both displays corrupted with thick slanted lines

2011-08-22 Thread Jay Taoko
I have a dell mini 9. It should be very similar CPU (if not the same) as the
N10.
I updated it today.
Following that, I plug in an external monitor (max res 1280x1024) through a VGA
cable. I was able to run Unity in these configuration:

laptop: 1024x600 external monitor: 800x600: no major issue to report.
Unity works well.

laptop: 1024x600 external monitor: 832x624: no major issue to report.
Unity works well.

laptop: 1024x600 external monitor: 1024x768: starting to see some empty
regions on the external monitor (black). Probably the limited video
memory of the dell mini 9 is kicking in...

laptop: 1024x600 external monitor: 1152x864: unusable

My dell mini 9 system only has 1 GigaByte of RAM so it is possible that
past a certain resolution, the system can't handle an external monitor
correctly. It is also likely that the driver doesn't provide much help
either...

However, I couldn't reproduce the bug as reported here. From the picture
of the bug, it looks like the system is trying to drive an HD monitor;
probably one with an even higher resolution than my external monitor.
So, I wonder if the system has enough RAM for that. Even if it does, we
can't be certain how that RAM it is allocated (between the GPU and the
CPU).

 - Is it possible to know the details of that particular system (in the
picture): how much RAM does it has?
 - What is the resolution of the external monitor?
 - Is it possible to lower the external monitor resolution when setting up a
multi-monitor configuration?
 - Does the problem shown in the picture still occurs when the external monitor
resolution is at its lowest?

[Bug 830952] Re: [Intel Arrandale, Mobile 4 Series] Video corrupted when connecting external displays

2011-08-22 Thread Jay Taoko
I remember fixing this issue at least a month ago...

I did a fresh install on my core i3 330M today and updated the system. I
plugged in an external monitor (max res 1280x1024). I cannot reproduce the
issue as reported here.
I am using a Ubuntu downloaded from the daily repository on the 14 of august...

[Bug 810971] Re: External monitor causes screen corruption

2011-08-01 Thread Jay Taoko
I was sable to reproduce the problem on my intel system: core i3 + GMA
HD GPU + VGA cable.

Something notable is this:
- The bug can be reproduced when Unity starts without multi-monitor support.
Then you plug in an external monitor and configure the system for a
multi-monitor configuration.
- If Unity starts with multi-monitor config already enable, then the problem
cannot be reproduce. The system works fine in multi-monitor configuration.

I have tested the system in several configurations and multi-monitor was
working fine. It is only the case mentioned above that causes problem.
I have briefly tested my desktop system (ATI GPU + open source driver) but
couldn't reproduce the problem. So there maybe something specific to intel here.

There is a fix for the the original problem mentioned in this bug.

[Bug 801413] Re: Unity crashes if you open a quicklist and then the corresponding launcher icon closes

2011-08-01 Thread Jay Taoko
I am not sure this bug still applies. Please re-test.
Also, is there a way to reproduce this bug reliably without involving the user
action speed?
