[Bug 1929442] Re: can't load voboxdrv after upgrade to hirsute 21.04

2021-10-14 Thread Joachim Sauer
I've had this exact problem myself and while I can't specifically say
what went wrong I've solved it this way:

- uninstall linux-headers-generic (and the version-specific ones)
- notice message `dpkg: warning: while removing
linux-headers-5.11.0-37-generic, directory
'/usr/src/linux-headers-5.11.0-37-generic' not empty so not removed`
- look into /usr/linux/linux-headers-5.11.0-37-generic and realize there's a
.config.old file in there
- wipe out the directory fully using `sudo rm -Rf
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.11.0-37-generic/`
- reinstall linux-headers-generic
- install virtualbox-dkms

Now the modules load correctly.

[Bug 1714244] Re: [snap] apparmor denials on /etc/chromium-browser/policies/

2019-10-17 Thread Joachim Sauer
Is there a separate bug somewhere about actually implementing custom
policies? Since 19.10 switched Chromium to Snap this means that not
having those is an actual regression compared to 18.10 or 19.04, so I'd
say this warrants a slightly higher priority now.

[Bug 451086] [NEW] Rhythmbox Notification Bubble shows wrong cover art

2009-10-14 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When switching between songs while the main window is invisible
notification bubble pop up to show me what the current song is.

Unfortunately the notification bubble sometimes shows the wrong cover
art. It seems to me that the main (only?) problem is when switching from
a song with cover art to another song that has no cover art. In that
case all the information from the new song is displayed, but the cover
art of the old song is still displayed (which is obviously no longer
applicable).

[Bug 432422] Re: [karmic alpha6] Installing System with encrypted $HOME: Installer hangs at 83% for ~15 minutes

2009-10-05 Thread Joachim Sauer
I have also noticed this behaviour and it's rather perplexing. First of
all (as others have noted) there isn't any feedback at all that this
operation might take a long time (I personally expected Creating user
to be a rather quick operation). Second: why *does* it take so long?
Even with a big swap partition it should not take 15 minutes to zero it
out. Might providing a bigger block-size to the dd command increase the
speed? As this is time the user usually spends waiting before being able
to use his new and shiny Ubuntu installation it is a really bad first
impression.

[Bug 413504] [NEW] Resizing VirtualBox window when crashes gnome-dipslay-properties

2009-08-14 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm running a fully update karmic koala installation inside a VirtualBox
installation (Host: Ubuntu 9.04) and have the VirtualBox guest
extensions installed. Everything works fine: Mouse integration just
works, resizing the window changes the resolution of the guest X server.

There's only a tiny problem: When running gnome-display-properties
inside the guest and resizing the VirtualBox window, gnome-display-
properties crashes without any information.

I've started gnome-display-properties from a terminal hoping I'd get
some more output and here it is:

correct here as well).

[Bug 275396] [NEW] about: screen wrong version number (1.9.0.x instead of 3.0.x)

2008-09-28 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Entering about: in the location bar brigns up the about-screen.

It shows version 1.9.0.3 instead of 3.0.3, but still show correct
application name (i.e. it shows Firefox version 1.9.0.3).

It seems that is the version of xulrunner.

The User-Agent string shown below correctly identifies the build as
Firefox/3.0.3.

Downloading the binary build from mozilla.com and running it (using the
same profile/themes/add-ons/...) correctly shows 3.0.3 as the version
number.

I know it's a minor bug, but it ought to be fixed.

[Bug 183619] Re: [hardy] wlan0: AP denied association

2008-06-03 Thread Joachim Sauer
From what I've read on this and similar issues it's not a problem about
the encryption, since the success depends only on the AP used.

I myself have the same problem on my university network (unsecured, no
WEP, no WPA) and it was always working correctly at home (WPA on a
Linksys WRT54g).

Booting the old 7.10 kernel (2.6.22-14) made everything work, but there
the ipw3945 driver was used, so that's probably not very useful.

Compiling the latest compat-wireless tar ball (2008-06-03) fixed the
problem. An earlier version (2008-04-29) did not fix it. This driver
reports as version 1.2.26k.

Can some of the kernel maintainers comment on this please? It seems to
affect quite some people and in my opinion would definitely warant a fix
before the next Ubuntu release (especially considering that this is a
regression, as it worked in 7.10).

[Bug 141226] Re: Pushing Backspace moves to parent directory but also beeps

2007-10-03 Thread Joachim Sauer
Is there any work on fixing this?

The problem also occurs when deleting files using the Del key. While
it is not a functional bug, I think it should really be fixed before the
Gutsy relase (if possible):

1.) It is a definite regression to Feisty Fawn
2.) A User will not understand why the computer beeps in a way that's normally
used for error conditions only
3.) It reduces the trust put into Nautilus (and thus into Gnome and thus into
Ubuntu and thus into Linux) by making it feel not perfect.

I know that last item sounds strange but isn't quality a lot about
perception? When navigating around a file system and doing some work
those two actions, moving to the parent directory (backspace) and
deleting a file (del), are rather common and if each time this action is
invoked produces an audible beep then I personally tend to avoid using
nautilus for these actions.

There's a workaround in unchecking Enable System Beep in the Audio
preferences, but obviously this also disables valid beeps.

[Bug 141226] Re: Pushing Backspace moves to parent directory but also beeps

2007-10-03 Thread Joachim Sauer
I realize that lack or ressources is the problem here. I hope that I can
help by providing a patch, even if it's not perfect.

I have to note 'though that I haven't done any C development for ages
and no GTK-development at all, so this fix might be very wrong, but it
fixes the problem for me.

The problem seems to be that nautilus tries to active the search entry
box for every key pressed except for a limited set. Backspace and Delete
are not in this set, so they activate the search window, which then
tries to consume the key press and beeps because Backspace and Delete
are not valid actions on a currently empty entry box.

My fix simply won't forward BackSpace and Delete to the Searchentry.
Backspace and Delete still seem to work correctly once the search entry
is open, since then the search entry itself has the focus and its key-
handling routine will be called (and not the one in nautilus-icon-
container.c that I modified).

[Bug 145144] Typo in german translation

2007-09-26 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compizconfig-settings-manager

There's a typo in the german translation of the Advanced Desktop Effects
Settings tool.

In the Expo plugin in the Verhalten-tab (probably Behaviour in
english) there's an item that says Anischt kippen but should read
Ansicht kippen.

Unfortunately Translations is are not active for this tool in launchpad,
so I had to file a bug.

[Bug 141226] Pushing Backspace moves to parent directory but also beeps

2007-09-20 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In an up-to-date Gutsy gibbon when browsing directories with Nautilus I
use Backspace to move to the parent directory (although the menu entry
mentions Alt+Up as the shortcut). This works as expected, except that
it beeps as if the command was not understood in addition to moving to
the parent directory. Using Alt+Up as the menu item mentions works
without the beep.

[Bug 140820] Re: synaptics touchpad won't left click, right click, or vscroll after recent change in gutsy

2007-09-19 Thread Joachim Sauer
I've had the same problem and only found out that it can be configured
now from this bug report.

While it's great that this can be configured now, it feels like a major
regression when it suddenly is disabled after an upgrade.

I think this options should default to enabled (or better yet: detect if
it was enabled before the upgrade).

[Bug 111334] Re: Theme thumbnail in Gnome Theme Properties uses wrong colors

2007-08-23 Thread Joachim Sauer
The original bug was found on an (at the time) up-to-date Feisty Fawn
install.

I've tried reproducing the bug on Gutsy (just updated) and it was a bit
harder, since the thumbnails were stored so I had to delete .thumbnails
between each invocation of the appearance capplet.

It seems that in Gutsy the themese are correctly drawn with their
respective selected color, so the bug is fixed in Gutsy.

[Bug 115565] Default index.html links to Debian Bug Tracking system

2007-05-19 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lighttpd

The default index.html that's presented once lighttpd is installed says
This computer has installed the Debian GNU/Linux operating system and
links to the Debian Bug Tracking System.

Personally I don't have a problem with this, but since everything else
mentions Ubuntu exclusively I'd thought you might change that as well
(especially since bugs could be wrongly added to the DBTS, when in fact
they belong into Launchpad).

[Bug 111334] Theme thumbnail in Gnome Theme Properties uses wrong colors

2007-04-30 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

The gnome-theme-thumbnailer seems to use the currently selected colors
when creating thumbnails for themes where the GTK engine supports user-
adjustable colors instead of the ones that are set in the theme.

Steps to reproduce:
* start gnome-theme-manager
* Select a theme that allows changing the colors (such as Mist)
* click Customize
* in the Color-tab change the window background color (or something else)
* you should now have Custom theme selected
* close the theme-manager, open it again (so that the thumbnails get redrawn)
* look at the thumbnail for Mist (or other themes), which now has the current
background color, even though you get another one when you select it

[Bug 51006] Re: wrong encoding used in svg output

2007-04-26 Thread Joachim Sauer
I could not reproduce this with graphviz 2.8-2.6 in feisty fawn by
following the instructions shown in the Debian Bug. Maybe it was fixed
in a later version.

The generated SVG shows correctly in Firefox and Eye of Gnome. xmllint
doesn't seem to have any problem with it either. All of this of course
assumes that the original .dot-file is indeed saved in iso-8859-1
encoding.

Could you please give detailed steps on how to reproduce this?

[Bug 109576] Re: Gnome Panel config in Feisty

2007-04-26 Thread Joachim Sauer
Thanks for your bug report. I can't seem to reproduce your problem.

I don't find any gconf keys at apps/panels/system_default/top_panel

What I do see is those two trees:
/apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/top_panel
and
/apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0

Changing keys in the first tree doesn't change anything in my running
setup (as it seems to be used for initial setup when you start Gnome for
the first time), but changing keys in the second tree is instantly
applied on the panels visible in my screen.

Could you please add some more information on how to reproduce the bug?

[Bug 109098] Re: Desktop background doesn't minimize

2007-04-22 Thread Joachim Sauer
That's the fault of beryl, as it should not present a minimize-button,
as minimizing is disabled on this window (you can check this by
disabling beryl/using metacity, where you will see that this window only
has a closing button).

[Bug 107668] Setting an invalid mount point can make a removeable media unaccessible

2007-04-19 Thread Joachim Sauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

When accessing the properties of a mounted media and changing the mount
point option on the Volume-Tab, one can set a mount point to use for
that volume. It seems that this only referes to the last part of the
real mount point, so one is expected to enter foo when the volume
should be mounted on /media/foo. This might be better for novice user,
but I tried entering /media/foo, which was accepted without a problem.
Unfortunately when re-plugging the device back in it a warning dialog
pops up that says Cannot mount volume. Unable to mount volume . When
clicking details the message mount_point cannot contain the following
characters: newline, G_DIR_SEPERATOR (usually /).

Only changing the key
/system/storage/volumes/_org_freedesktop_Hal_devices_voume_uuid_*/mount_point
to foo (or anything else without newlines and /) enables me to use the
usb-stick again.

I suggest two changes:

* The properties dialog should check for valid values and not allow a / to be
entered
* The volume should be mounted in its default location, if the user specified
location is not valid.

** Affects: gnome-volume-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
