[Bug 1082139] [NEW] Window decorations solid black

2012-11-22 Thread Joe MacDonald
Public bug reported:

Using Xubuntu in a dual head configuration, the problem has been present
since at least 11.10. When logging in, one of the two displays will not
show graphics for window decorations, just solid black blocks in the
size of the decorations. The other display will show decoration
graphics normally. Going into the settings manager and making any
change to the window manager appearance (including selecting a new style
then re-selecting the previous style) results in the graphics displaying
properly on both heads.

Before and after screenshots attached.

From the before shot, I selected Applications - Settings Manager -
Window Manager then chose another theme from the Style tab and then
went back to Totem.

[Bug 1082139] Re: Window decorations solid black

2012-11-22 Thread Joe MacDonald
Ah, I forgot, this only seems to happen in the following scenario:

- I've been working in my dual-head configuration at work, with two external
monitors and my laptop screen off
- I go home and work on a single display on the laptop screen
- I go back to work and log in again with my dual-head, external screens on,
laptop display off

If I don't switch to running at least one session single-head / LVDS,
the dual-head problem never seems to happen.

so I'm attaching a debdiff here.

Re: [Bug 339783] Re: Separate X-screen, apps launched from 2nd screen appear on first screen

2009-04-15 Thread Joe MacDonald
On Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 8:02 PM, Ng Oon-Ee ngoo...@gmail.com wrote:

I would like to second Paul Gortmaker, this does not seem to be an
nvidia bug, though it will only affect nvidia chips since I think only
they use separate x-screens? Wonder how the nv drivers would handle
 it...

Anyhow, the issue may be more nautilus than gnome-panel, since I HAVE
observed that starting things from cairo-dock opens them in the first
screen as well, and I assume that cairo-dock would not be interacting
with gnome-panel at all. Which leads me to conclude that if I replace
nautilus with pcmanfm I could check out whether that's true.

Interesting. Not something I'd considered. Paul and I had been discussing
the problem the other day and I suggested it seemed to me like it was
gnome-panel because I also use Nautilus plugin scripts
(~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/) which include the attached script. If I use
the right-click popup menu on the desktop and select command_prompt_here
from the Scripts submenu, the terminal appears on the correct screen
(either :0.0 or :0.1, depending on where the right-click menu started) so
I'd assumed the information provided by the X server was correct and
Nautilus was interpreting it properly (or at least not mangling it before
the script got hold of it).

I'm not sure what to make of your observation, though. Maybe I want to go
back and re-evaluate what my Nautilus plugins are doing.

-J.

Will try that out when I have the time to reboot into Jaunty.

[Bug 184806] Re: metacity crashed with signal 5

2008-08-28 Thread Joe MacDonald
I haven't been using Metacity for several months now, purely in compiz,
so I don't know if the problem persists or not. It's not a problem for
me anymore on either the machines where I'm running compiz or where I'm
still running Metacity.

[Bug 34199] Re: Evolution cannot connect to Exchange backend process

2008-05-07 Thread Joe MacDonald
Yeah, pretty much the same thing here. Until I updated (as in: when was
using the base Hardy install) evolution I'd get a half-dozen crashes a
day of the exchange connector. Since then it's been completely
unusable. I can't open my inbox to even read mail now and trying to
enable my calendar is a guaranteed way to kill all of evolution (as in
no evolution processes are running at all anymore).

I've done all the force-shutdown. force-shutdown, delete files in
/tmp. force-shutdown, delete files in /tmp, blow away cache files in
.evolution. force-shutdown, delete files in /tmp, blow away everything
in .evolution/exchange. force-shutdown, delete files in /tmp, blow away
everything in .evolution/exchange, log out. force-shutdown, delete
files in /tmp, delete exchange account in evolution, log out. dance and
still no joy. My next steps are: create a new user and see if evolution
still barfs there or if it's something else in my environment, then roll
back to the version from my Hardy cds and lock the package version
assuming it still works.

Other suggestions welcome, but right now this is more of a train-wreck
for me than it has been in probably two years so I'm very close to just
wanting to cut my losses and run.

[Bug 10669] Re: Filters are not applied to new mail on Exchange

2008-02-01 Thread Joe MacDonald
I upgraded to Hardy a few weeks ago in hopes of fixing another problem I
had, but I've noticed that after the upgrade, all my filters are being
applied now as new mail arrives. So I'd say it's been fixed in the
upcoming Ubuntu.

[Bug 71236] Re: notification applet does not display system notification icons on multi-screened display

2008-01-23 Thread Joe MacDonald
It looks like this one is being tracked in bug #128735 and #12696. Not
that helps solve the problem, but since I'm also having the same problem
and was searching the database, I thought I'd put a note here pointing
at those other two.

[Bug 139952] VIA VT6240 SATA Controller DVD/CD Write Failures

2007-09-16 Thread Joe MacDonald
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

A detailed discussion about this case has been archived via the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list here: http://www.mail-
archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg11361.html

I'll try to provide only the most immediately relevant details here to
hopefully avoid providing too much noise.

- This doesn't appear to be a hardware failure because the machine with
the failure dual-boots into WindowsXP and both Nero and
cdrecord-2.01.01a35 are able to burn CDs and DVDs.

- First observed the problem on an Edgy Eft install but I didn't record
any of the failure information at the time.

- Now on Feisty Fawn and yesterday I tried booting a Gutsy Gibbon kernel
(2.6.22-11) without success, though the failure reported different
problems.
