2019-11-04 Thread John Agosta
I have confirmed that it will not crash if I have a single monitor.

In duel monitor mode, i can also reconfirm that after updating
(strangely) Chrome browser that the window manager will crash, but will
restart -- prior to the update it would crash and not restart.

Additional thought on my scenario ... I was also working in a duel
monitor mode when gnome crashed. In my case Thunderbird was on my
primary monitor, and the thunderbird dialog came up on my secondary
monitor. Interacting with this dialog is when gnome crashes.

[Bug 1850833] Re: Changing text color in Thunderbird table will crash gnome desktop

2019-10-31 Thread John Agosta
Hi:
I had to use step 3 and the new bug report is here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1850881

Now, there are a number of (IMHO) really weird things that also happened
in this round of reproductions:

After reproducing the crash, I had these crash files:
-rw-r- 1 jagosta whoopsie 193242154 Oct 31 21:43
_opt_google_chrome_chrome.1000.crash
-rw-r- 1 jagosta whoopsie 0 Oct 31 21:51
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash

So, the gnome crash file was empty this time, but there was also a
chrome crash file, so I tried running `ubuntu-bug` on the chrome crash
file. When I did this it stated that it failed to generate a report
because google-chrome was out of date and needed to be updated.

So, I updated `google-chrome-stable (78.0.3904.87-1) to
(78.0.3904.70-1)`, and then I tried to reproduce the bug. This time,
the gnome window manager appeared to crash and then reset -- so I did
not lose the window manager. But, Chrome and Thunderbird both crashed.

I was left with these crash files:
-rw-r- 1 jagosta whoopsie 38273264 Oct 31 22:02
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash
-rw-r--r-- 1 jagosta whoopsie 0 Oct 31 22:02
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload
-rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie37 Oct 31 22:02
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.uploaded

Bug # 1850881 was submitted for this gnome-shell crash file.

I am really curious how updating chrome is impactign the behavior of
both Thunderbird and Gnome.

[Bug 1303986] Re: [SRU][FFe] CloudSigma Datasource doesn't handle vendor-data correctly

2014-07-14 Thread John Agosta
Hi Viktor:

1) Are you testing with your new cloud? Kiril has stated your new
cloud would have this dmi info in the instances. We did explicitly
break (with agreement from Kiril) the datasource on something without
that dmi info. Our understanding is the new cloud would have
'cloudsigma' as the value returned by 'dmi-decode -s system-product-
name'. See code changes in https://code.launchpad.net/~kiril-vladimiroff

[Bug 1304075] [NEW] Cloud-init Datasource backporting via PPA

2014-04-07 Thread John Agosta
Public bug reported:

For Clouds that have support in later or development version of Cloud-init,
Canonical allows for Cloud Vendors to backport the datasource and dependencies
to under the following rules:

Only Datasources which have been submitted to upstream or are in upstream
cloud-init are eligible for backporting.
Only the Datasource and dependencies of the datasource should be backported
Dependencies upon cloud-init internals from a future release should be either
added to the backported Datasource or added to a new class.
Features and cloud-config modules are NOT to be backported.
Backporting complete versions of Cloud-init to prior releases is expressly
prohibited.
The backported Datasource should be packaged and named “cloud-init-ds-cloud”
The package MUST conflict with the version of cloud-init where the Datasource
is provided natively by Cloud-init
A package must exist for each supported version of Ubuntu between the target
version of Ubuntu and where native support appears.
For example, if backporting a Datasource in 14.04 to 12.04, a backport for any
version between 12.04 and 14.04 that is currently supported must exist.
End-of-life’d versions of Ubuntu are excluded from this requirement as they are
no longer supported. For exmaple, 13.10 reaches EOL in July 2014. This means
that Clouds that backport Datasources to 12.04 would only need to maintain
13.10 till July 2014, after which the Cloud would only need to maintain 12.04.
Clouds must test upgradability to make sure that a user upgrading versions is
not broken.
Packages must conform to the Debian packaging standards
The Cloud needs to establish a support channel for the Datasource
The Cloud assumes all support and bug issues
Canonical will accept bugs related to the Datasource and Cloud-init interaction
if and only if the Cloud can show that the issue is with Cloud-init and not
with the Datasource.
The package may configure cloud-init to use the Datasource.
The package MUST NOT change the installed package for cloud-init (i.e. Clouds
should not change packaged files included in the cloud-init package).
The package should write a manifest file to /etc/cloud/datasource-cloud.cfg
The manifest should include a changelog
The manifest should identify the version of Cloud-init where the datasource
came from.

Canonical does not provide guidance or documentation for Clouds
performing backport work. The work involved requires an expert in Python
and Debian packaging.

However, Canonical does offer the backporting of Cloud-init Datasources
on a per-fee basis. When performed by Canonical, the backports are added
to the Cloud-init package as part of the Ubuntu SRU process and will be
maintained by Canonical.

[Bug 787587] Re: Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-06-22 Thread John Agosta
Regarding resolution question in #10.
The sensitivity of the Duo touch screen is not close to that on a phone.
Therefore, for a decent touch experience you need a larger resolution in the
16:9 ratio spectrum. Users of the Duo have found the 1024x576 resolution to be
a good middle ground. A better answer would be for --newmode to work giving
everyone flexibility...but just having an alternative of 1024x576 would be very

[Bug 787587] Re: Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-06-09 Thread John Agosta
I have never loaded and booted an alternative kernel image before. I
know it has something to do with placing new kernel images in /boot and
selecting at boot-up via Grub. But, that is where my understanding
stops. I will need to research how to do this.

[Bug 787587] Re: Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-06-02 Thread John Agosta
I realized that I failed to problem exact instructions to reproduce the
problem...

The default Dell Duo resolution is a 16:9 ratio and is set to 1366x768.
This is too small. You can use another preconfigured resolution of
1024x768, but this leaves large amounts of unused screen. Therefore,
trying to set the screen to a good 16:9 ratio and thus using 1024x576.
This works on Maverick 10.10 via the following commands...

$ cvt 1024 576
# 1024x576 59.90 Hz (CVT 0.59M9) hsync: 35.88 kHz; pclk: 46.50 MHz
Modeline 1024x576_60.00 46.50 1024 1064 1160 1296 576 579 584 599 -hsync
+vsync

$ xrandr --newmode  1024x576_60.00   46.50  1024 1064 1160 1296  576 579 584
599 -hsync +vsync
$ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1024x576_60.00
$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x576_60.00

At this point on 11.04 the screen completely blanks out. I am able to
use the terminal window blindly and use xrandr to reset the resolution
to the well known working default resolution (1666x768).

[Bug 787587] Re: Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-05-25 Thread John Agosta
@Chris, this was a fresh install. Others on the forums expressed the
same problems after an upgrade, but I wanted to keep this completely
clean, so I went with the new installation of Natty 11.04, and then
loaded all updates.

[Bug 787587] [NEW] Cannot change screen resolution on Dell Duo in Natty

2011-05-24 Thread John Agosta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrade (or fresh install) from 10.10 to 11.04 we can no longer
change screen resolution from the default resolution of 1366x768.

There is a large Ubuntu user community who is trying to get the Dell Duo
to work properly with Ubuntu. We have been successful in a number of
areas with Maverick, but Natty has a number of issues that used to work
in Maverick. The most significant issue is that we can no longer change
screen resolution. The Dell Duo is a laptop with a touchscreen and we
need lower resolution for the touch. We cannot get this to work with
natty

We have tried all the different xrandr screen commands. Running those
commands will blank out the graphics screen and lock up the system.

The Ubuntu Forum thread that discusses the Del Duo and its behavior on
Natty is located at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1658635
