[Bug 2063827] Re: Gnome Control Center fails to open on Wayland

2024-04-27 Thread John Doe
I want to add: I faced a similar issue. Though updating to the 550
drivers through apt seemingly fixed the issue, there was actually more
issues at play.

First and foremost, on the Wayland session, running "glxinfo | egrep "OpenGL
vendor|OpenGL renderer" returns:
"OpenGL vendor string: Mesa
OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 17.0.6, 256 bits)"

Upon some further research, I learned that the renderer being "llvmpipe"
means that the nvidia driver isn't properly working. I'll note, also,
that I could only install the driver using apt, as the ubuntu-drivers
utility didn't show any drivers newer than 535. I can't tell if the
driver installation broke, but nvidia-smi does return the expected
output. And on XOrg, glxinfo mentions the nvidia drivers and my graphics
card (RTX 4080).

I don't know if this implies that the nvidia drivers are currently
bugged on wayland.

Again, I had a similar issue as OP upon a fresh install. All the gnome
apps crashed (settings, the first-installation greeter) and going
through the errors, it listed a segmentation fault (I'm sorry, but I
can't reproduce it now).

[Bug 1958733] [NEW] Settings menu will not open. Other things seem messed up.

2022-01-22 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

I installed DWM and was learning how to use the shortcuts. I was mashing
keys because I had no idea what the shorcuts were and I am a newb. When
I rebooted into DWM, it said it couldn't open firefox because of an IBUS
warning. When I rebooted again and went into the normal Ubuntu window
manager everthing worked fine. When I went to click on settings, the
settings menu would not open. I tried to open settings by using the
following command "gnome-control-center display" which did not work.

Should I just reinstall everything?

The 'at' in the URL above seems to be a problem. I can see the URL only, if I'm

2021-03-27 Thread John Doe
This solved the non-responsive keyboard bug for me:
https://www.mail-archive.com/grub-devel@gnu.org/msg29091.html

Non-US keyboard layouts and non-ASCII character output are separate
problems. I did not find an official solution for those and had to write
my own patches.

[Bug 1916622] [NEW] fw_printenv and fw_setenv not available on Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS

2021-02-23 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Hi there

In the latest release of u-boot-tools both commands "fw_printenv" and
"fw_setenv" was removed from package.

Changelog for 2020.10+dfsg-1ubuntu0~18.04.2 package contain following
line:

" - Remove fw_printenv and fw_setenv and Recommend libubootenv-tool.
  (Closes: #939598)
"

Bug number 939598 is referencing to the Debian bugzilla
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=939598)

As I can see, fw_setenv and fw_printenv was removed from Debian package
due to conflict with same binaries in package libubootenv-tool. However,
this package is available only in Ubuntu 20 but not in Ubuntu 18.

There is no alternative package containing this files:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?searchon=contents=fw_setenv=exactfilename
=bionic-updates=any

More to say, "file-not-found" command is referencing to "u-boot-tools"
command:

```
# apt install u-boot-tools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
u-boot-tools is already the newest version (2020.10+dfsg-1ubuntu0~18.04.2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 55 not upgraded.
# fw_printenv
Command 'fw_printenv' not found, but can be installed with:
apt install u-boot-tools
```

Please provide alternative package for Ubuntu 18.04 (e.g libubootenv-
tool) because this is breaking change

[Bug 1914953] Re: grub2 incompatibility between at_keyboard and gfxterm modules lead to impossible to type passphrase or access ubuntu grub2 menu on a fully encrypted installation

2021-02-20 Thread John Doe
I can confirm this bug.
But a qemu machine seems unaffected.

There is another effect:

Step 1: Let the GRUB console start.

Step 2: select console as terminal_input and terminal_output. This is
the default anyways.

Step 3: set a non-US keyboard layout
since console is the active terminal_input, the new layout has no effect yet

Step 4: set console AND at_keyboard (both! This is possible) as terminal_input
now ALL keys you press are handled by at_keyboard. You can detect this because
the non-US keyboard layout is used for all keys pressed. There is no delay,
everything just works great right now.

Step 5: activate gfxterm as terminal_output
Now strange things happen: press a key that would be affected by the non-US
keboard layout. You get random output now: the character you see can be
affected by the non-US layout, it can be the US layout character or the
keypress does nothing at all.
The only difference to step 4: gfxterm is active

Why does gfxterm affect at_keyboard?

I can confirm that disabling Secure Boot does indeed allow the system to
boot normally.

FWIW, 5.0.0-36-generic (i.e. the newest 18.04 HWE, non-edge kernel) is

[Bug 1852581] Re: hwe-edge kernel 5.3.0-23.25 kernel does not boot on Precision 5720 AIO

2019-11-15 Thread John Doe
I'm also getting the same issue on an ASUS VivoBook K451LB (x86_64, UEFI
boot). 5.3.0-19.20 is the last kernel that boots on this system, all
subsequent ones fail and drop to the initramfs prompt.

Unpacking /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-19-generic and
/boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-23-generic (using unmkinitramfs) and performing a
diff doesn't appear to yield much, with only one file missing (an RTC
driver that was intentionally removed).

However, I did notice that the kernel modules were just slightly smaller
in the 5.3.0-23 initrd, and that eventually led me to this:

$ modinfo
'/run/shm/initrd.img-5.3.0-19-generic/main/lib/modules/5.3.0-19-generic/kernel/drivers/ata/libahci.ko'

Notice that the output of modinfo for the 5.3.0-19 module contains the
following lines (which are missing in the 5.3.0-23 modinfo output):
signat: PKCS#7
signer:
sig_key:
sig_hashalgo: md4

My hypothesis is that the newer kernel modules being unsigned is the
root cause behind these boot failures, since I currently have Secure
Boot enabled. I'll attempt a boot with Secure Boot turned off and report
back again.

(and in turn triggering an issue in the e1000e driver) -- I can
reproduce it with just two ax88179_178a. It might be a memory leak, I'm
not sure.

When I modify the configuration to use two vlans on the e1000e instead
of a second interface, I still get device resets, but that *may* be
resolved by turning off options with ethtool. I'm waiting to see.

tl;dr computers are terrible, everything sucks.

[Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-24 Thread John Doe
For me personally, the issue only appeared after upgrading from 18.04 ->
19.04. Based on dpkg.log, the last working kernel I had was either
4.15.0-45.48 or 4.15.0.43.45.

I haven't tried downgrading the kernel yet: the machine is headless and
manual interventions are a pain.

[Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-23 Thread John Doe
Sorry for the delay, I was busy.

The out-of-tree e1000e driver does not resolve the issue.

Running, for example, "wget http://ping.online.net/1000Mo.dat -O
/dev/null" from the host, with all traffic on the non-e1000e interface,
and no traffic on the e1000e interface, causes the e1000e interface to
reset.

[Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-21 Thread John Doe
I have already tried mainline kernels, and every combination of ethtool
knob-twiddling. No luck.

Disabling TSO *may* make the 'random' e1000e resets happen less
frequently (it's hard to say), but wget/apt-get *on the other interface*
reliably trigger the e1000e to hang and reset regardless of settings.

I will try the out-of-tree driver this evening.

[Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-20 Thread John Doe
I might have the same issue, I'm not sure. I have a Ubuntu 19.04 server
with an onboard e1000e interface and a usb ax88179_178a interface,
routing traffic between the two.

The e1000e interface drops a couple of times a day and I see "Detected
Hardware Unit Hang" / "Reset adapter unexpectedly" messages in syslog. I
don't know what triggers that, there's no significant traffic in my
graphs.

I can trigger the e1000e to drop reliably, but the trigger doesn't make
sense:

I can send as much traffic as I want from ax88179_178a through e1000e
and vice versa. I can send as much traffic as I want to the server
itself from the e1000e. If I send any moderate amount of traffic to the
server from the ax88179_178a, then the e1000e drops. For example, apt-
get will cause the e1000e to drop.

The server is fine, the ax88179_178a is fine, the apt-get or wget or
whatever will complete and eventually my TCP session will usually
recover after the e1000e resets. If the files are large enough, this may
happen several times. It doesn't seem to matter if it's writing to disk
or to /dev/null.

I have swapped out the switch, the cable, and the USB ethernet interface
(both for another ax88179_178a and some other chipset I don't remember.)
I have tried kernels from the mainline ppa. I have tried every
combination of ethtool knob-twiddling. No luck.

The issue first appeared for me after upgrading from 18.04.

[Bug 1825378] Re: systemd-networkd doesn't set wireguard peer endpoint

2019-05-07 Thread John Doe
Hi all, could the package maintainer(s) please take a look at this?

This breaks (almost) any WireGuard endpoint configured by systemd-
networkd. Worse, it breaks them silently, which makes for a fun
debugging adventure.

The fixed patch (https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/pull/39) has
been applied upstream since early February, how did the broken one get
backported without testing during a release freeze?

Alright, for the sake of science I shut the computer off, turned it on

When I look at the images from img_capture, I can understand why
libfprint doesn't manage to make them match. Maybe I wasn't swiping my

drivers. At least I hope these logs will help you somehow...

[Bug 1641290] Re: [04f3:0903] Elan Microelectronics Corp fingerprint reader not recognised

2018-07-28 Thread John Doe
Hello Igor,

I have a 0903 and tried your branch that tries to fix its issues, here
are some logs :

1) https://pastebin.com/xugAj0db : First try, with the build etc.
Unfortunately when I tried to enroll my finger touched the touchpad and
put the terminal in background, and I thought that was what made the
enroll freeze.

2) https://pastebin.com/UpVh0wXT : I thought first try was a mistake but
the script seems to freeze everytime. It freeze automatically, even if
I launch the enroll and don't touch the reader, it'll return that 110
error code after 5 seconds. Is this what you call "lock up" ?

For your information, before collecting those logs, I tried the img_capture and
it "worked" (an image was generated etc), then I tried enroll and got the same
error than in the logs (it seems it locked itself between img_capture and
enroll).

Let me know if there is any way I can help you on this

[Bug 1776546] [NEW] Yakkety packages are missing from old-releases.ubuntu.com

2018-06-12 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

At least two packages are missing from old-releases.ubuntu.com for
Yakkety, aka release 16.10. Recently a large number of yakkety packages
were available, but returning 403 errors, likely due to a permission
error. It seems that issue has been resolved, or at least the packages I
needed appear to be working. However it seems a handful of packages are
now missing entirely. The two packages I know about are:

E: Failed to fetch

  404 Not Found
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with
--fix-missing?

Which happened to be dependencies required by the virtualbox guest
additions.

I'll attach the packages to this ticket, in case it helps.

P.S. The old-releases server could also use HTTPS support.

[Bug 353356] Re: Gnome screensaver lock always reports "incorrect password"

Observing same issue on Ubuntu 16.04 (after upgrading from 14.04 where
same problem was appearing).

I consider that this effect is also there if you lock the screen manually.
Same workaround works:

- (lock screen manually; re-login says "wrong password"
- try to login as another user with wrong password
- after error, switch back to your user
- now login works

[Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-22 Thread John doe
*** dirty temp workaround for hurry people ***
If you want to use SNA on Ubuntu 14.04 with lts enablement stack while waiting
for the patched xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-utopic package, you may just
replace the following files with the same files coming from the
xserver-xorg-video-intel ([1] or [2]) package in trusty-proposed version (do it
in tty1 for example as you will replace in use driver! ):
/usr/lib/libI810XvMC.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/libIntelXvMC.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

Don't forget to remove any conf file you may have added to use XNA in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.

This is really dirty, I don't know what will happen when the official
package will come (don't forget to backup original files), but at least
it seems to work for me !

[Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-16 Thread John doe
@girisha: if you're OK to have last packages from proposed-updates you
may follow instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed to easily test the new
package.

In my case I just realize that I had previously upgraded to Utopic
graphics stack so my curent package is xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-
utopic (2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.2~trusty1) and no more xserver-xorg-
video-intel (2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.4).

If anybody with trusty original's graphic stack can test the new package
(ubuntu1.5) (maybe trying to force ut with dpkg, if you don't want to
enable all proposed-updates, but at your own risks).

Also if a new xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-utopic proposed package is
release I will try it on my system as descrive above.

I revert back to SNA since kernel 3.16.0-34 and liboxide updates (3 days
ago) on Ubuntu 14.04.2.

Chance or not, no prb occurs since theses updates: as the problem was
not so frequent I'll wait a few days before to say if it works because I
don't see any good reasons :)

If someone else could try to revert back to SNA afeter updates, it also
could be cool.

[Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-04-09 Thread John doe
Switching from SNA to UXA downgrade 2D day-to-day performances as SNA is the
not-so-new default acceleration method for recent Intel graphics card (as in my
case Broadwell HD 5500). More info about performances here :
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=intel_2dxorg30_ubuntu1404num=1

For example, at startup, the only icon folder on my desktop is now
displayed slowly with UXA rather than SNA. However as Luke #32 said
before this is better to have this workaround than missing letters
problem, but it's only a workaround, not a real solution.

@girisha #35: forget about xf86-video-intel, your xorg.log show you have Intel
driver :
3.831] (II) intel(0): Using Kernel Mode Setting driver: i915, version 1.6.0
20080730
[ 3.831] (II) intel(0): SNA compiled: xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.2 (Maarten Lankhorst maarten.lankho...@ubuntu.com)

In any case, try to create the following folder:
sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Then create inside the new folder a file named for example 20-intel.conf with
the following content:
Section Device
 Identifier Card0
 Driver Intel
 Option AccelMethod uxa
EndSection

Then reboot and voila. If something goes wrong (if X server failed for
example), you just have to delete the 20-intel.conf to revert back.

Do you mean that by modify font size the missing letter prb is
permanently solve or were you modify the font when the prb occurs to
temporary resolve it?

As the problem seems to be a mixtape between kernel, Intel Driver,
glib2, etc. I was hoping it may be solve using kernel 4.0 so thanks to
have reported that it's not the case.

[Bug 1440539] Re: auto capitalization is capitalizing first two letters insted of one

2015-04-07 Thread John Doe
Hello Michael, thank you for checking that!

I didn't check all languages, but I had same problem on English, German
and Croatian keyboard. System language is English (US).

Problem appeared immediately after flashing, and I flashed 3 times!
First time I tried with fresh ubuntu install but was the same, then i
tried flashing android and then ubuntu again so after that problem was
still there. After all that i tried flashing devel channel but i found
it to pretty much buggy so i flashed again to stable and ofc problem
with capitalization persisted.

Might be that im the only one with problem, but i didn't do anything special,
just simple install with:
ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel=stable --bootstrap

Can i check something else? Maybe some logs or what? I mean if there
could be something interesting or specific..

This problem is nothing to worry about, but i find it rather annoying if
im in rush with writing something because i often have to correct words.

Sad but seems to work solution: disabling SNA for old XUA method (as
described here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics#SNA_issues).

It seems it works better (for now) with UXA method, but it's a sad story
as performance drops a little (and it is worthy...)

[Bug 1440539] [NEW] auto capitalization is capitalizing first two letters insted of one

2015-04-05 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Nexus 4 owner here! I installed Ubuntu Touch stable channel (14.10 r17).
So problem that i noticed is when auto capitalization is turned on it
always capitalizes 2 letters instead only first one! No matter where,
on login, on beginning of each sentence and everywhere where keyboard is
used, and it does that every time.

Im sorry if that's already reported or maybe its not a bug, but i
couldn't find the solution so i decided to report it!

This just happened to me as well. However, my rc = [-30]. It appeared
when suspending my laptop. Odd thing is that the screensaver still
works. I am using Ubuntu 14.04 on a 4,1 macbook. It had problems earlier
today when trying to wake it; I had to reboot it. I have both MacOSX and
Ubuntu on separate partitions while using rEFIt to chose between them.
The grub menu still pops up when choosing Linux.

[Bug 1271430] Re: dm-0: WRITE SAME failed. Manually zeroing.

I am also affected by this problem - on a brand new Dell R720 - H710P

Server 14.04 LTS machines. Upon days of being put to use, all of them
showed that error in the syslog - sometimes in the console as well.

Is there any patch/workaround for this? Could it affect the data on the

[Bug 1319207] [NEW] Contextual menu keyboard button can create important display bugs in almost all ubuntu applications

2014-05-13 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Most applications handle a right click event, and react to that by providing a
contextual menu. They usually handle a second right click by making the menu
disappear.
Moreover, some keyboards provide a 'contextual menu' key, which acts as a right
click.
However, when you press this key a second time on many ubuntu applications
(unity, file manager, gedit, just to name of few, but it's probably an
underlying problem), the first contextual menu doesn't disappear, and instead a
new one appear, which has the very nasty side effect of filling the screen with
contextual menus if the key accidentally gets pressed too long - and sometimes
with no other solution than to quit the application to make them all disappear.

[Bug 1309964] [NEW] Setting the preference to move window control to the right no longer works

2014-04-19 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

On earlier versions of ubuntu, either [gsettings set
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
menu:minimize,maximize,close] or [gconftool -s
/apps/metacity/general/button_layout -t string
menu:minimize, maximize, close] enabled to change the window control to
the right. Now, in Trusty (14.04) even the unity-tweak-tool, which still
enables this option, isn't able to achieve the wanted result.

This is probably due to the new unity decorations.

The user should still have the opportunity to choose this setting (let
the user choose, whenever there are differences about user experience
preferences), if only because the XP support just ended and all these
new users don't want to have that much of a user experience difference
when going to Trusty (don't make the same mistake windows 8 did,
thinking users will adapt to UI changes - letting the user choose in
such cases is always the best option).

This is my first bug filing report, sorry if it doesn't fit the format
you are used to, feel free to edit it, but I think it really brings up
in important point that has to be addressed in a LTS release.

[Bug 1255469] Re: Problem reading or parsing sonic-visualiser .desktop files

2014-03-26 Thread John Doe
Hi,

came accross this Issue,too.

apport-collect 1255469
You need to run 'sudo apt-get install python-apport' for apport-collect to work.

cat /usr/share/applications/x-sonicvisualiser.desktop
cat: /usr/share/applications/x-sonicvisualiser.desktop: Datei oder Verzeichnis
nicht gefunden

locate x-sonicvisualiser.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/sonic-visualiser:x-sonicvisualiser.desktop

Just like a Clean System and don't like it to install unneeded
things(python-apport). If I can contribute in any other way to fix this issue,
please be so kind and let me know.

kind regards

[Bug 1290539] Re: Nautilus turn off show hiden files does not work

2014-03-11 Thread John Doe
Yes it's specific for the first user which was created during the installation.
Tried it with a new account and it does not show up.
I tried to turn it off twice. First the usual way with ctrl+h and then with the
menue (down arrow) show hidden files and unchecked it. When I close and
restart nautilus hidden files are visibile again. Of course the entry in the
menue is also checked again.

[Bug 1199785] [NEW] update-manager puts cpu usage to 100%. Overheating laptop (lenovo x201)

2013-07-10 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Since a few weeks update-manager seems to get stuck during the update
process and overheating my laptop.

The update window shows me the message downloading from
de.archive.ubuntu.com and the bar is full. My cpu is running at 100% on
all cores. The gnome system monitor shows me only 25% usage, but that
cant be true because the fan is running on full speed. The systems
monitor seems to be stuck too. Likely due to the high cpu usage of the
update manager. Once I quit the update process the cpu usage for the
process jumps up to 100% for a second before it is gone from the list.

I have to shut down the process manually before emergency shutdown (goes
way beyond 80 degrees celcius) Once I force update-manager to shut down
my temps go down again and the fan slows down too. Everything is back to
normal.

The odd thing is when using synaptic to update my packages everything is
fine. I started having this problem a while back, but then after the
update worked once I thought it was gone.
