[Bug 1871767] Re: xubuntu 20.04 beta soft hang on raspberry pi 4

2021-02-17 Thread John Morris
This bug still exists in 20.10.

My 2 cents:

This bug will also bite even if you have screensavers and power saving
set to off using desktop settings.

This bug does NOT appear to occur on a regular Xubuntu install on the
x86-64 platform.

[Bug 1864613] Re: xfwm4 very, very slow - leaking something?

2021-01-22 Thread John Morris
The `gdk_x11_display_error_trap_push` symbol in the above stack trace
indicates it's the upstream bug described in the following issue, and
fixed by the patch in the referenced comment:

https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/-/issues/351#note_13692

The problem is confirmed present in the current Focal package source,
xfwm4 v. 4.14.1.

[Bug 1892529] Re: `catkin` doesn't recognize `lint` verb

2020-10-08 Thread John Morris
I appreciate the thoughtful explanation, and I wasn't aware of the
Debian policy that strongly discourages shipping programs as libraries.

Working around that policy, it looks like the problem still could be
addressed by breaking out separate library and runtime packages.

However, I've moved on and my workflow has somehow been adjusted (I
forget now), so I won't push this issue any further. Feel free to
close, and thank you for maintaining the package.

[Bug 1892529] Re: `catkin` doesn't recognize `lint` verb

2020-08-21 Thread John Morris
This patch reverses the dependencies, so `catkin-lint` pulls in `python3
-catkin-lint`. The Python libs are in the `python3-catkin-lint` package
now.

This fixes the problem for me, but I'm just a dabbler in Debian
packaging, so I don't know the greater ramifications of esp. the
dependency reversal.

[Bug 1892529] [NEW] `catkin` doesn't recognize `lint` verb

2020-08-21 Thread John Morris
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Focal with these package versions installed:
python3-catkin-tools0.5.0-1
python3-catkin-lint 1.6.6-1

The `catkin lint` command fails:

$ catkin lint
usage: catkin [-h] [-a] [--test-colors] [--version] [--force-color | --no-color]
  [build | clean | config | create | env | init | list | locate |
profile] ...

Error: Unknown verb 'lint' provided.

The problem is that the `catkin-lint` package installs its Python
package into the `/usr/share/catkin-lint/catkin_lint` directory, which
is of course a non-standard location, outside of `sys.path`. Because of
this, `pkg_resources` can't find the `/usr/share/catkin-
lint/catkin_lint-1.6.6.egg-info/entry_points.txt` file, and `catkin`
doesn't know about the `lint` verb.

The `catkin lint` command works fine when installed via `pip install
catkin-lint`, which puts the Python package in the expected location.

Digging deeper, I see the `python3-catkin-lint` package is just a stub
package that depends on `catkin-lint`, and customizes the `pybuild`
configuration. I don't know how to fix that, exactly.

** Affects: ros-catkin-lint (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [Bug 1535447] Re: Intel Graphics 4K Screen Tearing

2016-02-01 Thread John Morris
Still not resolved as of today. I used another computer for testing
(Gigabyte motherboard and Nvidia 970) and also noticed the tearing started
appearing on it as well. I will try to upload a video.

This new computer was using Kubuntu 15.10 upgraded to 16.04 alpha 2
yesterday. I see the tearing today. I have not been able to do a fresh
install of 16.04 on any of my computers, the installer crashes, so I went
the upgrade route.

** Description changed:

On a fresh boot all works well, but after an indeterminate amount of
time the screen starts tearing badly, most noticeably as a permanent
vertical tear. Once this tearing starts, it affects everything (desktop,
etc) but is mostly visible in videos. The only way to get rid of the
  tear is to reboot.

I do not know where this tearing is occurring, compositor? graphics
  driver?

Hardware, Intel NUC5i5RYK (integrated graphics), LG 31MU97 DCI 4K

  NUC and monitor.

  Integrated Graphics (rev 09)

Software, Kubuntu 15.04 I also see the same problem in 15.10, but the
computer I took the video of has 15.04 installed.
The screen resolution is set to 4096x2160.

In my syslog, I also see tons of these error messages (I dont know if they
are related to the tearing). The error message repeats multiple times, and then
stops.

[Bug 1535447] [NEW] Intel Graphics 4K Screen Tearing

2016-01-18 Thread John Morris
Public bug reported:

On a fresh boot all works well, but after an indeterminate amount of
time the screen starts tearing badly, most noticeably as a permanent
vertical tear. Once this tearing starts, it affects everything (desktop,
etc) but is mostly visible in videos. The only way to get rid of the
tear is to reboot.

I do not know where this tearing is occurring, compositor? graphics
driver?

Hardware, Intel NUC5i5RYK (integrated graphics), LG 31MU97 DCI 4K
monitor (4096x2160). Using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable between the
NUC and monitor.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U
Integrated Graphics (rev 09)

Software, Kubuntu 15.04 I also see the same problem in 15.10, but the computer
I took the video of has 15.04 installed.
The screen resolution is set to 4096x2160.

In my syslog, I also see tons of these error messages (I dont know if they are
related to the tearing). The error message repeats multiple times, and then
stops.

[ 668.879288] [drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* The master
control interrupt lied (SDE)!

I am hoping I can attach a video to this file which shows the tearing
(5.7MB)

[Bug 1359689] Re: cryptsetup password prompt not shown

2015-05-24 Thread John Morris
I'm have a similar problem. I'm going to see I can reproduce the up down
key work around.

Currently the blank screen manifest every other boot. Can either enter
pass phase blind or Ctrl+alt+del, to force reset then screen is visible.

If I knew how to generate all of those reports I would. Starts right after
running software updater, even after fresh install. Current linux-image-generic
version 13.19.0.18.17
linux-image-extra-3.19.0-18-generic ver. 3.19.0-18.18
xserver-xorg-core ver. 2:1.17.1-0ubuntu3
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:7.5.0-1ubuntu2
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:7.5.0-1ubuntu2
cryptsetup 2:1.6.1-1ubuntu7
udisk2 2.1.5-1

System hardware:
Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 with current BIOS
CPU: AMD FX-8150 @ ~4.1Ghz
RAM: 32GB (4 x 8GB) Corsair maybe G-Skill (it's been a while since installing
it) DDR3 2133 Dimms @ ~2133
Graphics Card primary: Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon HD 7870 Ghz Edition 2GB
GDDR5
Graphics Card second: PowerColor AX7850 2GBD5-DH (AMD Radeon HD 7850) 2GB GDDR5
Wifi: AUSU PCE-AC68
Power Supply: Corsair RM 750 750 watt
Several HDD's

The only non-free software on the system is the Broadcom driver
(otherwise I can't use the wifi card), and Kerbal Space Program.

[Bug 1415306] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.10 Radeon HD 7850, fglrx/fglrx-updates Driver fixes blank screen on boot, but can no longer enter decryption passphrase

2015-01-27 Thread John Morris
Public bug reported:

After installing fglrx or fglrx-updates Driver, rebooting (everytime
since) loading spashscreen is visable, with the dialog for decryption
passphrase; however entering passphrase followed by return/enter key has
no effect.

My current workaround is to press reset key, then on next loading screen
select the current linux kernal with recovery mode option, followed by
resume boot. This brings up the decryption passphrase dialog in
terminal, and Ubuntu 14.10 loads completely thereafter.

System Specs
Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 with current BIOS
CPU: AMD FX-8150 @ ~4.1Ghz
RAM: 32GB (4 x 8GB) Corsair maybe G-Skill (it's been a while since installing

Power Supply: Corsair RM 750 750 watt
Several HDD's
Current HDD with Ubuntu 14.10 installed: Toshiba USB 3.0, Model Number:
V63600-C 1TB

I'm not sure if this is purley a Driver issue or a Ubuntu issue.
Info from AMD CCC Information page reports
Driver Packaging Version 14.201.1006.1002-140902a-175601C-ATI
2D Driver 14.20.7
CCC Version 2.21
RandR Version 1.3
OpenGL Version 4.4.12968

Boot problem is with linux 3.16.0-29 and untested on linux 3.16.0-23.
Also untested on Ubuntu 14.04.

Thank you.

[Bug 802026] Re: Booting results in flickering screen

2011-07-07 Thread John Morris
I'd like to be able to debug this problem better, but I'll need someone
to give me directions on how to do that.

* When I use i915.modeset=0 I'm not even sure that the i915 driver is
used. Judging by the X log, it looks like a standard VESA driver is
being used, with the wrong display resolution.

* If I allow the system to boot up normally (to the flickering built in
display) vga_switcheroo is available, however when using i915.modeset=0
the vga-switcheroo option is no longer available.

* Booting up normally with an external monitor sometimes results in the
KDE desktop showing up on the external monitor while the built in
display flashes. I can't always recreate this though.

Is this a case of the i915 driver not being able to function properly
only with the built in display?

Again, I'm having a hard time determining which driver (i915 or nouveau)
is currently being used, and I would love to debug this further, but I
dont know what to do next.

In my last reference I made a reference to the driver perhaps not
functioning properly with the internal display. Could this be similar to
this bug?

[Bug 802026] Re: Booting results in flickering screen

2011-07-07 Thread John Morris
I spent today googling my problem, and found the following PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

This PPA has newer i915 drivers and the latest drivers appear to work properly
with my computer.

Please read the PPA description thoroughly. Using that PPA and
proprietary drivers doesnt appear to work at the time of this comment

[Bug 802026] [NEW] Booting results in flickering screen

2011-06-25 Thread John Morris
Public bug reported:

Brand New Alienware M17xR3 with Intel i915 IGP, and NVIDIA GT 460M
video.

New, Clean installation of Kubuntu 11.04. When booting up, and BEFORE
Xorg starts, the video mode switches and the video on the screen
flickers and switches rapidly between colors as it flickers. No text or
graphics are visible on the screen after that, just the flickering.

Disabling modeset for intel (kernel command line parameter
i915.modeset=0) stops the flickering and I get to a desktop. When doing
this, screen resolution is wrong and vgaswitcheroo is disabled, but at
least the computer is functional.

[Bug 802026] Re: Booting results in flickering screen

2011-06-25 Thread John Morris
The bug report was filed with a clean install (using the alternate CD,
because the regular/live CD has flickering video and I cant finish the
installation) After the install four commands were issued before the
apport bug report:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get openssh-server
sudo apt-get yakuake

So the latest software and bug fixes have been applied as of 25/06/2011.

I see this bug also with a Sansa e260 MP3 player (original firmware -

Here's dmesg for it failing:
