We see Athos tested via the script, so we focused on testing our app. We
have the deployed PHP from the proposed repo. We have verified it fixes
our crash issue.

2021-11-15 Thread John Morton
Public bug reported:

We are experiencing this reproducible crash with 7.4.3-4ubuntu2.7
https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=80781

This was fixed 9 months ago in upstream PHP 7.4.15.

Can you apply the patch for #80781 and get it out in the next release of
Ubuntu's PHP?

[Bug 1615482] Re: apt-daily timer runs at random hours of the day

2016-11-09 Thread John Morton
Separating out u-u from the rest of the apt maintenance script could be
useful, but I prefer running the update, package fetch, upgrade then
cache clean up all in one hit. You *can* delay your reboot time, but the
shutdown command, at least pre-systemd would run until the shutdown
happens, periodically issuing a message to all terminal users before
stopping further logins and finally changing the runlevel to reboot the
machine. Less than ideal in the old cron.daily days, as those jobs run
sequentially and in lexical order. And a is for apt.

In the mixed jessie, trusty, xenial environment we run, we've moved to
taking the apt job out of cron.daily entirely, running the reboot 'now',
and using the cron/timer start time to effectively schedule the reboot.

My grievance is mainly that in making the transition to systemd the
upstream developers chose to:

1) Significantly change the job start time behaviour
2) Not bother to mention this behaviour change in the the changelog

It would be good to see Ubuntu at least set the timer defaults in such a
way that enabling unattended upgrades doesn't result in nasty reboot
during the day default behaviour. Which, given the half hour random
start time default, should be achievable without putting undue load on
the servers.

[Bug 1615482] [NEW] apt-daily timer runs at random hours of the day

2016-08-21 Thread John Morton
Public bug reported:

apt, from 1.2.10 onwards (ie any version in Xenial, onwards) uses a
systemd timer instead of a cron.daily job. This is a good thing,
decoupling apt daily runs from the rest of cron, and ensuring other
cron.daily jobs are not blocked by up to half an hour by the default
settings of unattended-upgrades.

However the policy chosen is to have the apt daily script run at a
random hour of the day in a wrong headed attempt to reduce server load.
This has the side effect of running unattended-upgrades at random hours
of the day — such as business hours — rather than being confined to
between 6:25am and 6:55am, using the defaults.

A better policy would be to have the script activate at 6:00am plus an
interval of 20 minutes at one second intervals reducing the impact of
timezone population spikes, while still allowing unattended-upgrades to
run within a predictable interval, before 7am.

At the very least, some sort of note in the NEWS file detailing the new
behaviour would be welcome.

2008-05-06 Thread John Morton
Thanks for your help,
I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04, and ran it for
about 4hrs as the live CD, with no issues, I have now loaded it in its own
partition and it is running fine. I will test it on my computer for the next
few days to make sure it performs as I require before loading it as my main OS,
thanks again for your help.

[Bug 135136] Re: In both ubuntu 7 and 7.10 my new computor freezes intermitantly

2008-05-05 Thread John Morton
Yes Adam,
It has gotten so bad I have switched to Mandrake for the
time being, as this doesn't freeze or give error messages on boot. but I will
revert to Ubuntu as soon as I have a cure, I am running Ubuntu 7.10 in a
virtual machine on this distribution to try to emulate the faults and find out
what is causing them. So far I cannot get them to recur in the virtual machine!

[Bug 135136] In both ubuntu 7 and 7.10 my new computor freezes intermitantly

2007-08-27 Thread John Morton
Public bug reported:

This only seems to occur in ubuntu 7 and 7.10, but not in any of the 6 series.
I have trawled through the information pages on the web but have found only one
entry that seems match the symptoms my computor is displaying. As this is an
new computor I tried the latest ubuntu distribution first, and later the 7.10
beta distributions. I have found that 6.10 seems to work quite nicely but
displays this error on boot :-
unable to connect to PCI device 000.000.00
after a while it seems to clear and boot ok, this did not happen when I loaded
Debian etch and the freezing doesn't happen either. The one entry that I found
that is a similar match to the symptoms that are happening "freezing for about
20 mins at a time quite randomly" is to do with the broadcom built in ethernet
card on my system, but I am not sure if this is the same as the thing that is
aflicting my system. I have loaded Ubuntu 6.10 and this seems to work quite
nicely, but I would favour some thing that wouldn't display this error message.
I dont know if it is relevant but neither Debian etch, nor Ubuntu 7, nor Ubuntu
7.10 could find my onbourd USB system, nor the sound card, and as I make
extensive use of a USB scanner for my work I couldn't use these distributions,
There are two USB 1 channels, and a USB 2 on my new system.
If you need any information regarding my computor I will be happy to
email what you require the basic info is:-
