[Bug 899244] Re: GMA500 psb_gfx

2012-03-11 Thread John Stevenson
Looks like Stefan got there first, but here is 'sudo lspci -vnvn' from
my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, just in case they are different.

This output was collected running 12.04 Beta 1 live USB. Booting got as
far as static text, then the desktop was started by crtl-alt-f1; sudo
rmmod poulsbo; sudo modprobe psb_gfx; startx.

Things are running very quickly and smoothly. Brightness keys work. No
wireless (broadcom), but sure that can be fixed on full install. Can't
test suspend/hibernate on live disk, but that is the feature I'm looking
forward to most.

[Bug 575937] Re: Can't synchronize Tomboy Notes with Ubuntu One

2012-03-07 Thread John Stevenson
I managed to fix this following this instruction:
--
I opened the Tomboy Preferences, and on the first tab (Editing), clicked New
Note Template. I then renamed the Template title to Title instead of New
Note Template. Then closed this template note, and synchronization worked.

Which I got from Ask Ubuntu:

[Bug 873972] [NEW] ubuntu-minimal package no longer exists - halts upgrade

2011-10-14 Thread John Stevenson
Public bug reported:

Upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 using the update-manager.

The process updates the sources lists for the new distribution and then
starts to calculate what needs to be upgraded. I seem to have ubuntu-
minimal meta package installed and the upgrade cannot find this package
in 11.10.

I am told that this issue should be reported using bug-buddy

ubuntu-bug update-manager

The update manager then reverts the sources lists back to the original
and closes out of the upgrade process.

[Bug 693073] Re: Panel and application Menus working but not visible

I have not experienced any problems with top panel menus or application
menus since the last apt-get upgrade carried out on 2nd February 2011.

[Bug 693073] Re: Panel and application Menus working but not visible

2010-12-23 Thread John Stevenson
I have a strange little work around that makes the menus come back most
of the time.

When I login, clicking on any of the panel indicators activates but does
not display the menus.

If I open a gnome-terminal window, from the Unity bar, the terminal
window is drawn in the top left corner of the desktop. Clicking on any
of the terminal window menus still has active but invisible menus.

Dragging the terminal window to the middle of the screen and then moving
back and clicking on the terminal menus in the top panel usually
activates the menus. This works at least half the time.

Sometimes I additionally have to click on the desktop to take away focus
from the terminal window and then click on the default menu bar (look
like nautilus menu options).

If that does not work then just clicking around usually gets the menus
working, although sometimes they still appear under apps, but this has
become very rare (1 in 10 times at a rough estimate)

Over the last week as I have been investigating, it seems that the gdm
login menus always work, for example the the power menu in the right
hand corner always seems to display.

Hope this helps
Thank you.

[Bug 693073] [NEW] Panel and application Menus working but not visible

2010-12-21 Thread John Stevenson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When logging into the Unity desktop the menus from both the panel
indicators and any applications do not draw on the screen. The menu
items are there, its just that they are not rendering on the screen -
Invisible menus.

The menus are active as for example I can click on the power icon
indicator, move the mouse down and select reboot, shutdown, etc. I just
cant see the menu as I move the mouse down, so its a bit of a guess
selecting menu items.

This same Invisible menus effect occurs for all applications, even
those that do not display there menubar in the panel (eg. firefox).
Drop-downs in web pages and in diaglog boxes also do not show up, but I
can still select them and scroll through their options using the up/down
arrow keys.

Occasionally when I log in the panel theme reverts back to an older
looking theme, with blue coloured icons, rather than the black and white
panel icons of the new Ubuntu theme. When the other theme is displayed,
icons in the Unity laucher are also displayed using the older icon set.

Also I have a problem with the screen saver not displaying when
activated. Again the screen saver is working and I can unlock the
screen by blindly typing in my password. I have disabled the screen
saver for the time being.

Sorry if this report is file incorrectly under Unity, I am not sure if
there is a better place.

[Bug 693073] Re: Panel and application Menus working but not visible

2010-12-21 Thread John Stevenson
When using applications like Terminal, I can see the menu items in the
panel. However they are appearing underneath the application window.

When I have windows maximised then I cannot see the menus, but if I move
the applications out of the way of the menu drop downs I can then see
the menu items.

The menus seem to appear at underneath any and all applications running.

I removed the hotot twitter client that was installed from a ppa and the
menus started appearing again. I am not sure if this is a coincidence
or if it points to some issue. I will run without hotot installed for
the next few days and see if there is any pattern.

The menu for an application only appear when you hover over the name of
that application in the top panel. I believe this is the expected
behaviour, although you need to make sure you click on an image window
when using Gimp as the toolbox does not know about the gimp menu.

[Bug 687660] Re: Empty desktop after login

2010-12-16 Thread John Stevenson
The Unity bar and panel have returned for me, although there seems to be
another side affect.

Intermittently the menus in both the panel and in applications (eg.
firefox) do not display. The menus are active as I can blindly select
items on the menu, I just cant see the menu rendered on the screen.

Sometimes the menus comes back after clicking around on the menus. This
may be linked to the fact that I keep getting a different gnome theme
for the windows and panel, which also happens intermittently.

[Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)

2010-11-03 Thread John Stevenson
Asus Eee PC 1000 - Fast and responsive overall

I have an Asus Eee PC 1000, upgraded to 2Gb RAM.

Modified /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 / ext4
noatime,nodiratime,data=writeback,errors=remount-ro 0 1
UUID=   /home  ext3noatime,nodiratime,defaults0   2

Only slowness I experience is with the desktop layout of the applications and
files folders. When selecting either of these buttons from the launcher
there is a 2-5 second delay (depending on how many apps and browser tabs I have
open).

Otherwise everything is generally fast and responsive:

Tooltips show up instantly
Launcher moves very quickly when moving the mouse over
Scrolling the launcher by hovering mouse at either end can be a few
milliseconds slower than very quick
The multiple windows view draws instantly when clicking on a launcher button
The quick selector (Linux home / windows key) response very quickly - I use
this the most
The Ubuntu menu (top left corner) displays okay, 1-2 seconds - I dont use this
very much.

I added all the apps I mainly use to the left hand launcher in Unity, so
I dont have to go to the menu screen very often. Otherwise I would find
the experience a little frustrating.

Once on the apps desktop menu, the menu itself is very responsive -
switching between categories of apps works very quickly. Using the
search bar is also really quick and have been very impressed with this.

Thank you for all your efforts with Unity and Ubuntu in general.

[Bug 65609] Re: installLocation has no properties error in nsExtensionManager.js during install/update of extensions

2008-05-03 Thread John Stevenson
I had exactly the same problem as Gene Mosher, in that I wanted to
revert to FF2 to continue using various extensions that are not yet
compatible with FF3.

This was on a box-fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy.

I had no extensions.rdf to delete

I tried the patch, but that just moved the problem further down to line
7647.

Then I found this thread, among others:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=770462

Deleting /home/$username/.mozilla/ worked for me.
