[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor
My last entry (#79) I suggested fix turned out to be short lived. Changing the frequency also gave false hope of a fix. I spend 30 hours since trying to better understand this issue. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9 on old then new HDs thinking it was drive related. I installed older and current versions of each OS all w/o real success. I use the Terminal command ps ux to watch the CPU% slowly climbed to 100% over a short period of time. When I final discovered there is a memory leak in glx (?) relating it back to the Nvidia drivers (BUG/565981 Report); Apparently the ATI driver has been fixed now and hopefully the Nvidia soon. Bottom line, I did one last fresh install of Mint 9 and after learning that older Nvidia drivers were going to work w/my Nvidia video card, I followed the guide to manually install Nvidia's nouveau driver (per http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install- nvidia-drivers-manually-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx.html); know it removes all the Nvidia proprietary drives. Once your installation is complete, be sure and shut off your computer and let it sit for a while before rebooting (rebooting directly will not work). I still see the CPU% creap up occurring but not nearly as bad as before. At least I can now stream radio and pay my bills at the same time. I hope this helps someone. -- Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93847 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor
It's amazing how this problem has been so persistant with Ubuntu (CPU jumping to 90-100%), I wish I could help resolve it but I'm not a coder. However, I can share my work around; I uninstalled 'gnome-system- monitor' and now use the 'awn system monitor' instead to monitor my system's performance. I really miss the graphical presentation but don't want to waste anymore time fretting over it. I'll check back after U10.10 is released and see if it will last another release. [Bug 608707] [NEW] Filter for only Active Tasks doesn't work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Active Tasks filter selects ALL tasks which have not finished instead of just Active tasks (Which are tasks that HAVE STARTED but ARE NOT COMPLETE) For example, the 10 yearly maintenance for a fuel tank may start in April 2016 and is due for completion in August 2016. it is NOT active now just because it is not complete. The task doesn't even start for another 5 years! Evolution is not the only PIM to get this wrong, of course. MS Outlook and Thunderbird Lightning also make the same mistake. In fact it appears to be only Novell Groupwise which understands this and displays just (really) active tasks by default. At least it did back in 1990. [Bug 505398] [NEW] package webissues-server 0.8.3-2-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: webissues-server System: ubuntu 9.04 Version: Webissues Server 0.8.3-2-1 What Happened While installing, I was asked to enter a password for webissues then I was asked for the root password for mysql. I gave the wrong password for mysql and Synaptic asked if I wanted to retry. On logging into mysql as root, I found that there was only an empty database of name webissues with NO tables at all. [Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows
Re Howard Teng I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on a desktop machine without problems. Though I did upgrade from 9.04 (instead of a clean install on a newly formatted partition) and when prompted, I opted to keep my original menu.lst - when 9.10 boots it starts with a 9.04 splash screen then switches to the 9.10 splash screen half way. [Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows
I too have an HP nc6400. Before I read PeterF's post I tried to replace GRUB2 with GRUB which works without losing (whatever utility is provided by )HP protecttools or recovery manager. I went into Synaptic and marked grub 2 for deletion (I WAS worried that grub wasn't an option) but went ahead anyway. Unfortunately the GNU GRUB-Legacy doesn't have debs or rpms but only source code tarballs but the source won't complile (dependency on binutils_2.9 or later fails because Ubuntu has binutils_2.20 - the old ASCII ordering which caused so much angst with Mandrake 8 all those years ago is still alive and kicking) Fortunately, after refreshing the archives grub 0.97 appeared alongside grub 2 so the solution is open synaptic delete grub 2 refresh archives (if necessary to show grub) install grub open a terminal and type sudo update-grub and everything works without fiddling with the HP utilities. So far I've booted in and out of Ubuntu and Windows 3 times without problem -- grub fails after running Windows https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/441941 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I had the same problem and found my solution here at http://www.blog .arun-prabha.com/2008/07/22/deleting-files-from-roots-trash-folder-in- ubuntu/. I did not have to re-install the OS. Apparently when the network share drive fails to mount due to the fstab problem (network not up, drive will not mount), sBackup creates the backup in your root folder. The procedure at this site outline the steps to clear the hidden backup folder/file then describes how to delete them from the root Trash folder. I just cleared up 22 Gib of reported space. Thanks for the link I've been using this machine successfully dual booting Ubuntu 8.04 with Windows XP since Apr-08 and with 9.04 for the last few months. I haven't touched the Windows install so I'm guessing that the problem is grub2 letting Windows overwrite it, which doesn't happen with grub. I saved these setting by selecting 'Next' then 'Finish' (default set to 'KDE-PIM suite') in order to create '/dev/pilot'. The file '/dev/pilot' points to 'ttyUSB3'. The file '/dev/ttyUSB3' permissions are set to 'Can Read Write' for 'Others'. [Bug 48550] Re: kpilot crashes
If I only tried a few minutes more. I got my Palm TX to sync with Kontacts vis KPilot. From my Palm - HotSync screen I changed my settings from 'Local' and 'Cradle/Cable' to 'Local' and 'john-laptop' (my computer's name). To set this permanently on my Palm, I edited the Connection (John-Laptop) to connect to my 'PC' via “Cradle/Cable'. Selecting the details, I set the speed to '19200' with 'Automatic' flow control. Then in KPilot, I set the speed to match '19200'. The speed settings were match and set slower to enable a successful sync. One more comment, make sure your Palm 'contacts' match those in 'Kontacts'. By default, Palm only had Friends/Business where I had many more in Kontact. After the sync was complete, most of my contacts on my Palm were “undefined”. I hope this prove useful to others, good luck. [Bug 63265] Re: Firefox fails to open in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS
I'd say this is fixed. I recently decided to re-install 6.06 on my laptop (going back from 6.10). I found my old magazine (august APC) disc wouldn't work so downloaded ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso from ubuntu download site. Re: [Bug 63265] Re: Firefox fails to open in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS
John Vivirito wrote: JohnL is firefox open when you are shutting down/rebooting? I'm sorry this is still open - I found the answer in the Firefox FAQ's. Firefox opens some hidden files in the user profile area to prevent multiple instances opening. On closing, Firefox is supposed to delete the profile files. If the profile files are not deleted, Firefox thinks it must still be running and refuses to open. So, somehow Ubuntu is installing some profile files during the installation phase so that a new installation fails until the offending files are deleted. Now, in answer to your question, no - I close Firefox before shutting down. HOWEVER, shutdown does not work in ubuntu so there are often (less dramatic) dialog errors on startup. I have found that to cleanly exit Firefox under Ubuntu you must click the File-Close menu item. Clicking the Close icon (X in top right hand corner ) or File-Exit menu item will apparently close Firefox but it will generate an error message on startup (something like Firefox wasn't shut down properly - do you want to restore previous windows blah blah blah) JohnL -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Re: [Bug 55121] Re: Ubuntu alters other file systems on startup with FATAL results
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48806 *** For me the errors occurred when checking VFAT drives on startup. The drives were not reported to have any errors during previous Windows Me session. Win Me Scandisk did find (and fix) lots of errors after being fixed by dosfsck. In the process I lost 256 Mb of disk space. All errors seemed to be with files with long file names including a space somewhere in the path. eg C:\My Programs\MSACCESS.EXE or F:\Letter to fred.doc (I can't remember where that information came from - whether it was from dosfsck reporting the errors it found or from Scandisk fixing dosfsck's errors - I think I identified it in my original bug report) During the installation, while preparing to partition the disk, the installer checks discs for errors and, if it finds errors, asks politely if you want them fixed. If the installer passes this stage without detecting errors, the install seems to succeed. If you find errors and proceed to install without letting dosfsck fix the errors, at the first system reboot, dosfsck will fix the errors without asking. On another installation attempt, dosfsck reported errors, I aborted the install and ran scandisk under Windows. Windows DID find one error on each disk that dosfsck identified and no errors on disks that dosfsck declared to be OK. So it appears that dosfsck might be correctly identifying errors but making things worse when trying to fix them. Hope this narrows the search for the bug(s). So, it would seem possible to duplicate the bug by deliberately creating errors in a VFAT file system, probably in files with spaces in the path. It should be possible to create VFAT disc errors by opening and editing several files in wordprocessors / spreadsheets etc then resetting the computer (without proper shutdown). I haven't had any problems with ReiserFS, ext3 or ext2 filesystems. StefanPotyra wrote: *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48806 *** Hi, this is in fact not one bug, but three: 1) dosfsck is buggy 2) other file systems are checked during boot 3) file system checks depend on a buggy program I'm pretty much interested in fixing 1). So any useful info how reproduce this are highly appreciated. As I'm most of the time just a user of ubuntu, I'm not interested in 2) and 3), because for me it just works. However here are some comments to these, but these reflect only my humble opinion: 2) please define other file systems: I have a ext3 FS which I use to store various data on. It's neither vital nor in any way necessary for ubuntu to work. Would this also fall under this catagory? Imho there is only a point in making a distinction between rw-mounted file systems and ro-mounted ones. 3) that's a serious bug indeed, fixing the installer would fix that. Of course fixing 1) would also fix that. I don't think that the warning thingy might get us anywhere closer. For me personally dosfsck never ate any files, so you'd make me unhappy if I suddenly couldn't write to my fat32 partition or in case it does get corrupted if it wouldn't be fixed on boot. However other bugs have shown that dosfsck is indeed buggy, and with the help of the submitters I could provide a fix for some of these. [Bug 55121] Re: Ubuntu alters other file systems on startup with FATAL results
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48806 *** I find it hard to believe you cannot reproduce this bug! All you have to do is install Ubuntu 6.06 or 6.10. THAT'S IT - 100% success in reproducing the bug. The bug is that Ubuntu checks other file systems - FULL STOP. The fact that dosfsck only destroys the other file system intermittently is possibly difficult to detect, BUT WHO CARES. As no useful purpose is gained by checking other file systems, the fix is easy. Modify the fstab file to only check appropriate Ubuntu file systems on boot. This is easily accomplished by setting column 6 in the fstab file to 0. As the Ubuntu installer produces the fstab file, it is a SIMPLE matter for the developers to change the routine that builds the fstab file to get it right. It is also a simple matter to distribute a patch (or fix to prevent this happening in the first place) as [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://launchpad.net/people/geo99 has been pointing out for ages. Look, this is a really serious bug and I can't understand why you are still distributing Ubuntu while this bug persists. I would have thought it would be prudent to at least - issue a warning that the distribution should not be installed in a dual boot situation, - modify the installer so as not to install in a dual boot situation or simply recall all affected install discs so far distributed. Perhaps this is the downside of open source - no fear of bankruptcy compelling a company to do the right thing. NOTE: Not WASTING TIME checking other filesystems for no reason, also reduces bootup time markedly - from about 4 minutes to less than 1 minute in my system which has 8 VFAT drives! [Bug 24981] Re: Anjuta and glib [breezy]
I think this is the bug I want to report - so to clarify the issue: To start a new project in Anjuta, you go through a new project wizard, select one of the GUI project-types (Gnome2.0, GTK 2.0, LibGlade 2.0 or gtkmm 2.0), fill in the various fields and click the apply button. Anjuta opens and starts to develop the new project files, displaying Quote... Auto generating the Project: Test ./autogen **Error**: You must have 'glib' installed you can get it from : ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk ...unquote. I'm guessing this is what can't even autogenerate the project means in the original bug report. The bug exists in 6.06 LTS as well as breezy. Installing autoconf and automake have no effect in Ubuntu. libglibmm-2.4-1c2a is installed and this appears to be the 'glib' referred to in the error message. Steps to reproduce this bug Install Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Install Anjuta, using Synaptic Try and generate a new GUI project using the Anjuta new project Wizard. -- Anjuta and glib [breezy] https://launchpad.net/bugs/24981 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63856] Attempting to save a file causes openoffice to crash - writer and calc
Public bug reported: Create a new file (in Writer or Calc), type a few words and click save (either menu or toolbar). Save dialog opens with Directory /home/username/Documents selected as default. Enter file name and click Save button. OpenOffice closes and crash report dialog opens. The fault appears to be the default Documents directory which has permissions 700. If you change the save directory say to /home/username or /home/username/some_new_directory_I_just_created (with permissions 755) save operation works fine. Changing permissions of the Documents directory to 755 does not prevent OpenOffice crashing!! Anyway - its a bug. Openoffice crashing disgracefully instead of displaying a you don't have permission dialog may be for Openoffice. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox To reproduce, Install ubuntu 6.0.6 using defaults and click Applications-Internet-Firefox to open Firefox. This causes display of an error message Firefox is already open, but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing firefox process or restart your system. This occurs immediately after rebooting, so restarting the system is NOT an answer. There does not appear to be another Firefox process automatically started during the bootup - Alt tabbing shows no other aps open. top doesn't show any processes that look like firefox in the background. [Bug 63268] Services application in Ubuntu 6.0.6 LTS only shows currently active services and doesn't provide any mechanism to modify settings.
Public bug reported: Click on Services Icon to open the services editor. After entering root password, a window opens displaying a few active services in a list box. There is a check box beside each service and presumabely one can disable an active service, but, there is no way to see or activate inactive services (as in say SysV Init Editor in other distros). The images in the help file show a window with - run level selector -list box displaying all services, whether active or not and a check box to select. As the actual application differs from the help file, I suspect someone has dumbed down the application to the point that it is not usable, rather than that the menu link is broken. [Bug 55121] Ubuntu alters other file systems on startup with FATAL results
Public bug reported: During installation, ubuntu checks all discs for errors and FINDS errors on VFAT drives that are actually clean. During installation, Ubuntu correctly asks if the errors should be fixed and, of course, you say no. Ubuntu then installs and reboots. On reboot, Ubuntu scans all drives using dosfsck set to automatically fix errors. The errors were all illegal file name and were all files/directories with (legal on VFAT) spaces in the name such as C:\Program Files, My Documents. Ubuntu only declared SOME files with spaces illegal, not All. THIS IS A CRITICAL BUG AS IT CAUSES ubuntu TO ERRONEOUSLY MODIFY ALTERNATIVE OPERATING SYSTEM FILES. In the short term: If you MUST scan other operating system discs before mounting them, you should give users the option to NOT FIX and Don't Mount / Not Fix and Mount anyway / Fix and risk the consequences Or perhaps just don't mount any disk ubuntu THINKS has errors. In the long term you should fix dosfsck so that it doesn't pick up false errors on VFAT drives. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Ubuntu alters other file systems on startup with FATAL results https://launchpad.net/bugs/55121 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
