[Bug 565206] Re: Please update to 0.2.4 as it fixes compatibility issues with qt 4.6

2010-04-17 Thread Jonathan Musther
Confirmed - a clear example of this is that SciDAVis in Lucid (beta2)
crashes when adding a new column to a table. This crash has been traced
to incompatibilities with libqtcore4 version 4.6 and above. The
SciDAVis 0.2.4 release addresses this issue (among others) and so no
longer crashes when performing this simple operation.

This debdiff didn't solve the problem for me, still crashing if I try to

to hang for a second or two, and then crash, now it crashed instantly
when I create the column.

I had this issue a few months ago on 8.04, but was about to upgrade to

Interestingly, when I removed 'splash quiet' from the kernel line, the
boot was normal. I'm thinking maybe s short rootdelay will do the trick

[Bug 321992] [NEW] Evolution Date Format Inconsistent.

2009-01-27 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu 8.10

In Evolution, when I create a task the start and end date fields work
correctly for me (in New Zealand), displaying the date in the format
dd/mm/yy (so today is 28/01/09).

However, after creating the task, when I click on it and the details
appear in the lower section, the start and due date are in the US
formate mm/dd/yy (so today is 01/28/09).

I'm pretty sure my locale settings are correct - all other programs seem
to show the correct date format (just tested in OOo and F-spot - both
fine).

[Bug 316737] [NEW] Create launcher - type location - cannot set location

2009-01-13 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

When trying to create a launcher to open a location:

- Create launcher
- In type, select location
- Enter a name
- Click browse

Now, when selecting a directory/folder, the only available option is
open, which opens the directory rather than selecting it and entering
the path in the 'Location' box. This effectively makes it impossible to
create a launcher to a location in this manner.

If the user types the path into the 'location' box, eg
'/etc/myapp/directory' and then saves the launcher, the resulting
launcher does work, so the problem is only with the browsing for the
location in order to create the launcher.

[Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count

2008-02-10 Thread Jonathan Musther
I was wondering if solving the problem was worth while, or whether we'd
be better of just scrapping the check altogether, so a while ago I asked
a couple of ext3 devs:

Does fsck need to be run on ext3 partitions?

Andrew Morton:

Theoretically: no.
Practically: yes. There are software bugs and hardware bugs and
things can go wrong on-disk. You want to catch them early.
Personally I disable the auto-fsck thing and I'll run fsck manually
once or twice a year, when the time suits me.

Mingming Cao:

Periodically fsck ext3 is still needed, even if ext3 is a journalled fs.
kernel code vm/fs could be buggy, or disks IO errors, which cause
filesystem metadata corrupted silently, this can't be detected by simply
replaying the journal log.
Well how often should ext3 do the sanity check is really depend on the
customer's priority, whether they would like to trade some of the boot
up time with more confident of the fs's healthy. It's probably a good
idea to warning the user that the scheduled fsck is coming and let user
to decide whether they want to do it or delaying it.

[Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count

2008-02-10 Thread Jonathan Musther
Using the -n switch, fsck can check a mounted filesystem (-n tells it
not to make any changes, so it wont do any repairs). So the quick way
to implement this would be to have a scheduled 'fsck -n', if it comes
back clean, fine, if it comes back dirty, schedule a full check to run
(on shutdown, with a note in the logout/shutdown dialogue?).

That should be quicker and easier to implement than writing the errors
to a log for quick fixing.

Mark, are you wanting this for Hardy, or Hardy+?

[Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count

2008-02-10 Thread Jonathan Musther
Of course I started fiddling with the aim of throwing together something
that could do that, but found a problem.

I ran fsck with -n on my root partition, it said there was an inode
problem, so I touched /forcefsck and rebooted to run a full fsck. After
rebooting I ran fsck -n again to see what it would tell me,
unfortunately I now had more problems than I had the first time, lots
of:

Free blocks count wrong for group #10 (19891, counted=19838).

and

Free inodes count wrong for group #10 (16186, counted=16187).

type errors. I also did the same with a different disk, and got the
same issue. So it seems that ext3 always has inode and block count
issues, making my suggestion of running a full fsck when errors are
found with a read only one, unworkable.

I've done some research, and there's no way to use fsck (well, we're

that's not to say it can't be done, just that it can't be done with the

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/17216

Just thought I'd mention that this problem isn't only when running on
battery, on my Toshiba A100 the load unload cycle count is increasing
madly, 30-50 in just 5 minutes.

This really isn't good.

[Bug 22460] Re: Should be warned of upcoming forced fsck

2007-10-25 Thread Jonathan Musther
Try AutoFsck:

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/AutoFsck

It basically moves this automated 'just in case' check to shutdown and
gives you the option not to run it if it's a bad time. There's also a
nice simple script (with zenity GUI) on that page which allows you to
easily change the interval.

[Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count

2007-10-25 Thread Jonathan Musther
I know AutoFsck was mentioned already, but I think it's worth mentioning
with regard to the last comment.

AutoFsck doesn't interfere with the start up check (if it's called for
some reason, it'll still run), and prompts the user on shutdown (no user
confirmation, no check run), which means it doesn't cause problems with
things like UPS initiated shutdowns or low battery shutdowns.

You can find it at:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/AutoFsck

There's also a nice simple script (with zenity GUI) on that page which
allows you to easily change the interval.

[Bug 152459] Brightness on Toshiba laptop display - jumpy

2007-10-13 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

On my Toshiba A100, when I try to change the brightness in Gutsy's power
management dialogue, the display flickers between two states (bright and
dim). THe same behaviour occurs on battery or mains power, but the
bright and dim are both brighter on mains.

On mains I have the choice of bright and dim, with bright being at the 100%
mark.
On battery I have the choice of bright or dim (but both are dimmer than on
mains), and the bright spot is around 70% on the slider.

[Bug 152504] system-config-printer won't accept password

2007-10-13 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

When I make changes to a printer through system-config-printer as an
admin user, I am asked for my password when I try to apply the changes.
When I enter my password, I'm quickly prompted again as if the password
was incorrect, and have to eventually hit cancel.

I suspect the problem is because I have a very secure password which is
16 characters and includes symbols, I believe that the problem is
probably with one or more of the symbols. My password includes some of
the following (don't know which are causing the problem):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]*(),.';:

It also contains numbers and upper and lower case letters.

One fix would simply be to call system-config-printer via gksu which
neatly bypasses this problem (although of course requiring root password
to even view).

[Bug 151446] [needs-packaging] AutoFsck

2007-05-06 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firestarter

Firestarter (when installed from the repos) doesn't correctly start the
deamon on system boot.

I believe it is because the network connections have not been set up by

Commenting out:

if [ $MASK =  -a $1 != stop ]; then
echo External network device $IF is not ready. Aborting..

[Bug 106918] Feisty: optical drives not working, possibly due to libata

2007-04-15 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

My optical drives do not work correctly in feisty, that is they're not
both visible, my setup is:

Pri-Master - hda 40gb (has hda1 as swap and hda2 as /)
Pri-Slave - hdb CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Sec-Master - hdc 250gb (has hdca as /home)
Sec-Slave - hdd CD-RW/DVD-RW

And the feisty generated fstab reads:

# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda2
UUID=817212c9-5326-4564-a922-02c968ff03ae / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sdb1
UUID=43ebc5ff-f943-4fae-b230-6b13fc316b72 /home ext3 defaults 0 2
# /dev/sda1
UUID=fb339463-7add-4014-b675-aa9ecfd1fac0 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

After the install, only /dev/hdb was working, /dev/hdd was not. I
changed the lines '/dev/scd0' and '/dev/scd1' to their '/dev/hd'
equivalents, which again rendered them usable.

In both configurations I cannot write or blank disks with gnomebaker I get the
same error as this bug:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnomebaker/+bug/97312

I'm sure I read a bug saying there were issues if you had a hard drive
and an optical drive on the same IDE channel, but I can't find the bug
now.

Possible this issue is due to libata migration as per the response to this bug:

[Bug 106100] Feisty: Incorrectly identifies hd as sd (eg hda1 - sda1)

2007-04-13 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

Feisty has my standard IDE drives (usually hda and hdc) listed as sda
and sdb.

My arrangement is usually (or should be):

Pri-Master - hda 40gb (has hda1 as swap and hda2 as /)
Pri-Slave - hdb CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Sec-Master - hdc 250gb (has hdca as /home)
Sec-Slave - hdd CD-RW/DVD-RW

Feisty created my /etc/fstab as follows:

# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# /dev/sda2
UUID=817212c9-5326-4564-a922-02c968ff03ae /   ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sdb1
UUID=43ebc5ff-f943-4fae-b230-6b13fc316b72 /home   ext3defaults
  0 2
# /dev/sda1
UUID=fb339463-7add-4014-b675-aa9ecfd1fac0 noneswapsw
  0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto 0 0

Oddly this seems to be working as far as my hard drives are concerned,
but my optical drives do all kinds of odd things, sometimes visible,
sometimes not, sometimes they'll mount, sometimes not, sometimes they'll
burn, sometimes not.

I did change my fstab to reflect the 'correct' configuration, and it
worked (about a week ago), but since installing the latest updates it
doesn't.

[Bug 103144] scripts running from desktop : $PWD = /home/user

2007-04-04 Thread Jonathan Musther
Public bug reported:

When I run a script from the desktop, it thinks it's running in
/home/user rather than /home/user/Desktop

For example the following:

#!/bin/bash
zenity --info --text=$PWD
exit

in a file /home/musther/Desktop/test

executed graphically (double click) on the desktop and hit run or 'run
in terminal', gives the output '/home/musther' rather than
'/home/musther/Desktop'

If run from the command line, the correct output is given, ie the
directory from which it is run.

[Bug 103144] Re: scripts running from desktop : $PWD = /home/user

2007-04-04 Thread Jonathan Musther
Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain it clearly enough. This only happens in
~/Desktop, if you copy the same test script to ~/Desktop/test and run
it, you'll get the expected output - '/home/user/Desktop/test'.

I don't know why it only happens on the desktop (ie in the Desktop
folder), but it does.
