[Bug 1634442] [NEW] GUI session crashes on boot

2016-10-18 Thread Joost Ringoot
Public bug reported:

I am trying to run Weston Wayland X server, in an attempt to get decent
graphics performance.

This is about an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (driver from PPA
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa `nvidia-370`
(370.28)) and a Phillips bdm4065uc.

Performance tests with 4k video are horrible in standard mir-xorg,
lightdm/gdm, unity and gnome sessions.

But I noticed performance is excellent when running steamOS (debian 8.6 based),
this one uses XWayland.
So I tried to get the same on Ubuntu but failed.

Same error again after reboot,... seems something gets "smartly" "fixed".

[Bug 1508718] Re: NetworkManager - error initialzing editor

2016-02-17 Thread Joost Ringoot
I have a workaround:
The problem appears to occur only when using the " add mobile broadband
connection wizard" from systemsettings-networksettings.

However, When you manually add the connection via the "edit connections
window", started from the bottom menu item of the network menu in the
"dash menu bar", you get a mobile broadband connection that can be
edited afterwards in the same way.

[Bug 1508718] Re: NetworkManager - error initialzing editor

2016-02-16 Thread Joost Ringoot
@frank (frank-olbrich) https://launchpad.net/~frank-olbrich
I tried your suggestion, it didn't work alas,...
There are some issues with it:
-file is new
- network group does not exist:

root@legolas:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d# cat ./00-dns.sh
#!/bin/sh -e
chmod 640 /etc/resolv.conf
chown systemd-network:systemd-network /etc/resolv.conf
root@legolas:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d# ls -al ./00-dns.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 76 Feb 17 07:20 ./00-dns.sh
root@legolas:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d# ./00-dns.sh
chown: invalid group: ‘root:network’
root@legolas:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d#

I tried also changing it to systemd.network:

#!/bin/sh -e
chmod 640 /etc/resolv.conf
chown systemd-network:systemd-network /etc/resolv.conf
root@legolas:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d#

but that doesn't work either

Anyway, there must be somekind of local dns-service, since resolving
works, and resolv.conf points to the localhost as dns-server:

root@legolas:~# ls -al /etc/resolv.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jan 29 11:11 /etc/resolv.conf ->
../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf
root@legolas:~# ls -al /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 172 Feb 17 07:46 /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf
root@legolas:~# cat /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 127.0.1.1
root@legolas:~#

Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

[Bug 1504349] [NEW] GUI crash when starting secondary sound, or changing track

2015-10-08 Thread Joost Ringoot
Public bug reported:

tested both with rythmbox and clementine: GUI crashes (unity/lightdm and
gnome/gdm same issue) when trying to switch audiotrack. Well it hangs,
mousepointer inclusive and tty's via ALT+F? are no longer accessable
Computer is (sometimes) still accessable remotely via ssh but to not much use.
I suspect it is pulse-audio related, the process shows defunct status after
crash.
computer behaves extremely buggy until hard reboot or "halt --reboot", "init 6"
and "reboot" don't seem to work.

[Bug 1334675] Re: Some locales are set to de_BE.UTF-8 when choosing Country 'Belgium' and language 'US English'

2015-06-17 Thread Joost Ringoot
IMHO, the best workaround is this:
cp /etc/default/locale /etc/default/locale_orig locale /etc/default/locale
then vim /etc/default/locale
in the command mode (type ESC twice to be sure), type this (you should see the
command at the bottom of the screen:

:%s/de_BE.UTF-8/en_US.UTF-8/g

Then hit enter (not too hard!)
This will replace all instances of de_BE.UTF-8 by en_US.UTF-8
Adapt as you like, YMMV

[Bug 1432330] Re: new install next to win7 failed

2015-03-17 Thread Joost Ringoot
Indeed the disk was defect as tested afterwards with SMART-tools.
It may be a good idea to do such a test and report during the install to avoid
filling up the bugs database with disk-problems.
Anyway thanks for the alert.

the install medium was with a USB-startup-disk application created, it was
succesfull on the first computer.
I got this error when installing the second computer. I noticed that the
options were saved from the previous install (keyboard, language, username,
computername, etc...) this might be related to the issue

[Bug 1330123] Re: grive needs relink

2014-11-01 Thread Joost Ringoot
Back draw for grive-tools: The indicator appears to sync only one way: from
google-drive to local. Automatic or manual appears to make no difference: icon
is changing as if it is doing a sync when you changed something locally, but
when it is finished without error, nothing has changed in google-drive in the
web-interface.
Grive executed from the commandline does a both way synchronisation, checked
with modified files on both sides, as expected.
I don't seem able to post a bug in the griv-tools project.

2014-09-04 Thread Joost Ringoot
As a workaround I suggest using the grive-tools PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~thefanclub/+archive/ubuntu/grive-tools

This one has as a plus a nice graphical interface.
I hope it won't take too long for this to be added to one of the standard
Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 1314095] Re: Unity Lockscreen in 14.04 can't unlock when using LDAP account

2014-07-08 Thread Joost Ringoot
I have this behaviour on an LTSP client (ubuntu 14.04),
chmod u+s /sbin/unix_chkpwd does not appear resolve it
and I am using sssd to authenticate to ldap

The screen-lock doesn't work by default in LTSP, I had to activate it with
unity-tweak-tool.
But it is useless since unlock doesn't work.

[Bug 1190898] [NEW] segfault in unity_support_test

2013-06-14 Thread Joost Ringoot
Public bug reported:

After update to Ubuntu 13.04 I was unable to use unity as shell.
lxde and gnome appear to work fine.
When I choose unity the screen gives just the background and never arrives at
the the point where the quicklist is visible or the dash.

I made a copy of the /var/log/syslog and then a cat /dev/null /
var/log/syslog

This is what I got in /var/log/syslog after a login attempt to unity:

root@legolas:/var/log# cat syslog

[Bug 1034609] Re: Palimpsest warns about misalignment of extended partition

2013-06-03 Thread Joost Ringoot
I found that it is possible to resolve all non-alignment issues by resizing the
problem partitions a bit with gparted, using a live-cd.
The only partition where gparted fails to do this, is the FAT16 Dell
diagnostics partition. Gparted ends with a numerical error on this (Which have
not noted down and the problem machine is no longer with me).

Nevertheless, I am convinced this is a bug in the Ubuntu installer
system, since I have let the ubuntu installer do the automagic find
space and resize partitions himself without any manual interaction.

Thanks for the response.

How do I quickly prove that I have the new release as available in

I explain why it is a duplicate bug:
It got broken by installing the be id reader software: needed to submit my
taxes (Hey I am from Belgium? yes.)

I did the following:
mkdir -p Desktop/usr/local/lib/beidqt/mkdir -p Desktop/usr/local/lib/beidqt/
mv /usr/local/lib/beidqt/libQtGui.so.4 Desktop/usr/local/lib/beidqt/
mv /usr/local/lib/beidqt/libQtCore.so.4 Desktop/usr/local/lib/beidqt/

And amarok, k3b, kate, vlc,... all those QT4 depending apps work again.

Furthermore, the application beid is not broken after doing this, (I am sure

And it are actually links to /usr/local/lib/beidqt/libQtCore.so and

In another bugreport I found this workaround:
 apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 16126D3A3E5C1192

which works fine for me

I have a 32-bit 10.04 install (standard install from live-cd) and the only

This is the output:

The program appears very usefull for me (It would let both my kids play

somewhere so that I can try to compile it on my computer?

[Bug 221774] [NEW] package network-manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-04-25 Thread Joost Ringoot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I tried the distro upgrade to 8.04 via update manager,... (was running 7.10)
All went well, it reported a problem with the network-manager, but the console
of the update manager reported that it was not fatal.
Untill the system hung on this upgrade failure: unable to go to console with
ALT+CTRL+F1 (or F2,F3,...), unable to start any program (like terminal or
firefox), no reaction on a click on the shutdown icon, no reaction on
ALT+CTRL+DEL. But I could still wobbly move the upgrade manager.
I tried a short push on the shutdown button: no reaction.
I switched the pc off.
Switched it back on.
After login I was invited to submit a bugreport (got message that the automatic
bugreport was corrupt) on bugs.launchpad.net.
I logged in.
And here I am writing the bugreport.
It appears to have recovered quite well, since I got network,... I can browse,
... I can submit this report.
I will see if there was any further damage.
