It seems related to having an incorrect install USB made with
unetbootin, that didn't remove the previous data in the USB stick (which
was from another distro).

Binary package hint: dpkg

While upgrading from 10.4 to 10.10 beta, an error appeared saying it failed to 
update a libphonon configuration file because it didn't exist. Close to the end 
another error appeared saying liphonon couldn't be installed because it was 
already installed.
In the end the upgrade process said it would revert, but it didn't.

In my case it crashed when changing the wired connectin to use OpenDNS.
After clicking Apply and entering the admin password.
