[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
@M. van Workum: This is getting to a point which makes my computer unusable. I know the feeling. Got similar instability problems with Ubuntu ever since 12.04, rendering the computer unusable. 12.10 and 13.04 did not fix it. Tried to escalate within Canonical on a few occasions, but all they said was repro steps are too vague. While they were right, these are not bugs to defer, since I was far from the only one. Quite happy with Debian 7.1 now. Rock-solid, like I remember Ubuntu being before 12.04. I don't think I will easily come back here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986831 Title: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986831/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 908335] Re: Kernel Hard Freezing Very Often
yea... got the same problem as well. Have reported on it many many times. Have even sent an email to Mr. Shuttleworth's assistant (over it - maybe indeed). Fact is, I have been more than happy with Ubuntu ever since my definite migration from windows to 9.10. Thanks to Canonical and its community - sincerely. I did also start making publicity for Canonical's and the community's great efforts! However, even though all updates went fine, I ran into the problem mentioned here, first on 12.04. My first _clean_ install since 9.10, mind! After rebooting and anxiously looking forward to the new possibilities, it crashed not 10 minutes later - without installing anything additional! Just browsing the web. Hard reset only option. It kept on doing so... I mostly used 11.10 in the mean time, as 12.10 did not fix the problem. 13.04 initially seemed a lot more stable on my machine. But it quickly started to break up as well. Did I really need to back to Windows? I wanted GIMP 2.8 and LibreOffice 4.0! No. Wheezy was released, and, since it was installed about two weeks ago, I have not experienced a single crash - well one, but it was recoverable through PTYx. It is fast, has the latest versions of the programs I wanted to update and it seems rock-solid. Should I put in a Ubuntu background, I might not even notice a difference at all on Gnome3. I switched from Ubuntu to Debian because of necessity, but given Canonical's indifference to these showstopper problems and Debian's stability, I think I will stay... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/908335 Title: Kernel Hard Freezing Very Often To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/908335/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Yep... I am more and more convinced the root of this bugger is a kernel problem. I didn't have success with any kernel higher than 3.2, although I only tried standard distro kernels up to now. I did try ubuntu 12.x, the last two mints and fedora. In degrees of stability, only ubuntu had the deep freeze this bug is about. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
@Kayvan: great write-up. Thanks. But the problem is broader than intel with on-board CPU. It happens on Intel-nVidia CPU as well, which is my set-up: a Core2Duo with an nVidia 8400M. I does not at all happen on Oneiric 11.10, which I went back to. It starts from 12.04 and continues into 12.10. It does not necessarily happen with intensive use. I had it while just browsing the web - although the web can be intensive use as well on some sites, which load up lots of flash ads and things. Both on Firefox and on Chrome / Chromium. I did notice that when scrolling up and down a page, the screens blinks (i.e. goes to black and back up) for some milliseconds. Sometimes the PC passes / recovers from such a blink, sometimes it results in this lock- up. To make sure: it _is_ a complete system lock-up I have: no mouse, no keyboard, no TTY, no log-entries. Hard-reset is the only option. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Well, Jeremy. I do not blame you. There really is no interest from Canonical into fixing this bug. There is no guidance, no follow-up, no reaction. Yes, truth is that all different comments filed here seem to appear related, but are not necessarily so, making pinpointing the source of this bug difficult, maybe even nigh impossible. But, please canonical, do react then, have this followed up and try to use the snippets of information being posted here, posted on a daily basis! This bug is _highest_ on the heat chart! That should give it some more priority, even if comments appear to be unrelated? If these are duplicated, at least file a list of other bugs and dissallow comments on this one? I still have this bug, I hoped it would have been a temporary 12.04 issue. 12.10 has the exact same problem though. I'm on an MSI EX600 laptop with Core2Duo processor and nVidia 8400G card. As far as I can judge, this is a kernel thing messing up with GPU. Something crept into the later kernels, i.e. above 3.0, shipped with Oneiric 11.10. Oneiric is rock-solid, even with propriety nVidia driver. Every distro I tried with a higher kernel gave problems (but Ubuntu is the harshest - crashing where only a hard reset works). Every distro with a kernel higher than 3.0 makes nVidia's driver unuseable on my system. unbelievable... 264 comments and counting and this is set to won't fix?! I changed from Ubuntu to Fedora 16 because of this with the latter running stable. All were pristine installs. This bug's thread is a hodge podge of different scenario's precisely because it happens IN a multitude of scenario's. Affected users can have the problem while watching video's, while working with GIMP, while browsing CPU / GPU intensive websites and so on. If anything, the bugs title and description should be updated instead of dismissing this. I can reproduce it 100% within 3 minutes by: Clean install on my MSI EX600 Either update or don't the nVidia drivers (doesn't make a difference) Open www.eurogamer.net (quite resource heavy that one) Open a digital foundry face-off article (just because it's a combination of flash, of images, video and a whole lot of comments) Scroll up and down the article. Crash within a minute! The crash is instant, no log files get updated afaik. The crash may be preceded by one or more screen flashes - as if the display is updating. This is milliseconds long, but clearly noticeable. One of the flashes eventually freezes the complete system, with a hard reset the only solution. Happens on nVidia, ATI, Intel etc. But clearly has somethign to do with the display, the LCD image updating. Quite where - I don't know. This bug is blocking for those involved. Critical for Canonical. As mentioned - I am getting used to Fedora now - one of many answers to this problem. Please update priority and status. Can't believe this is on invalid! I got an MSI EX600 machine, which I have been using Ubuntu on since 9.10 without major hick-ups. I have _switched_ from Ubuntu to Fedora now, since this bug really makes the system unworkable. There is nothing written in logs when this happens, although I know a way to fully reproduce the crash. Open your webbrowser and point to a resource-intensive website, like www.eurogamer.net. Click on one of the reviews or digital foundry face- offs. Now just scroll up and down. You'll notice that from time to time the browser screen refresh seems to hang just an instant. Continue to scroll up and down. You would be very lucky if the momentary hang doesn't result in a full lock-up after a few occurances. This bug is 100% reproducable. Since you can not work on the system for more than half an hour, Ubuntu becomes plain unusable, which is a shame. This happens on a fully clean install. With or without updating Nvidia drivers.
