I have the same problem on a desktop with kernel 5.8.0-44-generic and Intel HD Graphics (Celeron G1840). The system boots normally, but GUI freezes after clicking on any icon (only the GUI crashes, you can still access the system by ssh). Thanks Emmeran for pointing this! chromium-browser 43.0.2357.130 (released a week ago) has been fixed. Still, for distros older than 15.10, GPU acceleration remains off by default. I really have several reallocated sectors in my disk, maybe due to a hit or something. But the point is that the disk is working fine, I've have no data loss, and the number of reallocated sectors is not increasing. The bug is just the warning about inminent failure... I don't think that the disk will fail in the next months (and the manufacturer neither). Most people with six-digit reallocated sectors seems to be using Hiatchi drives. I got exactly the same error on Gutsy, after an update performed on 2008-01-18. I remember that some Xorg related packages were updated, maybe that could be the cause of the sudden malfunction.
