[Bug 956123] [NEW] Menus of GNOME apps (Web, Documents, Contacts) not properly integrated in the shell

2012-03-15 Thread Juha Siltala
Public bug reported:

The new GNOME applications (currently Web, Documents, Contacts) are
supposed to be transferred to the GNOME Shell panel. This used to work
with the Shell packages from the GNOME team's PPA (see
http://www.siltala.net/public/screenshots/epiphany.png ).

With the upload of gnome-shell 3.90 into the main repositories, this has
been broken. The menu shows up in *both* the shell and the application
window.

Running up to date Precise, gnome-shell 3.3.90-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 883119] [NEW] Issues needlessly in the IRC Council's private issue tracker

2011-10-28 Thread Juha Siltala
Public bug reported:

Currently, the IRC Council uses its own issue tracker based on OSticket.
This is needed for example for conflict resolution where users' privacy
needs to be considered, and a precious few other sensitive issues.

I suggest we use our own issue tracker only for sensitive issues, and
file bugs here on Launchpad whenever possible. This will increase
openness and also speed up issue resolution because anyone can help fix
the issue. It will also help us identify active team members willing to
help with general issues (in addition to their regular operator duties
and such), and perhaps empower them more efficiently.

 Importance: Undecided
 Assignee: Ubuntu IRC Council (ubuntu-irc-council)
 Status: New

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later

2011-10-11 Thread Juha Siltala
I agree with bgruber (#6), this bug is not the same as most of the
duplicates. I certainly tried to report a different issue in #856411.
This is a UI or usability bug, the rest are about a regression.

Martin-Éric (#7), the option itself works, until you try to set the
terminal to start with the menubar hidden by default in in Shell.

[Bug 865766] [NEW] Empathy does not return from idle to online status when user returns from being away

2011-10-03 Thread Juha Siltala
Public bug reported:

As far as I know, Empathy's auto-away status is supposed to work like
this: when I leave my computer, GNOME detects the idle time of 10
minutes (or whatever), blanks the screen, and puts Empathy in away
status. In previous versions, Empathy would come back to available
status when I became active again. This does not happen anymore. Empathy
goes away properly at idle time, but never goes back to available
until I set the status manually.

This is up-to date Oneiric, running gnome-shell.

[Bug 619811] Re: does not show Lyx menu

I have learned that launching LyX with either
'QT_X11_NO_NATIVE_MENUBAR=1 lyx' or 'APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH=1 lyx' are
usable workarounds.

I assume the latter is better, since it will normally display the menu
in both the application window and the applet, so it allows us to notice
when the bug is fixed. :)

[Bug 571436] [NEW] Intuitive default keyboard shortcuts needed

2010-04-28 Thread Juha Siltala
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fbreader

Starting to read a text in fbreader on my netbook, the first thing i did
was trying to fullscreen the application and see how to scroll down to
next page. My intuition came from web browsers and failed.

Scrolling down (called large skip in fbreader) is only bound to PgDn.
On my Eeepc, it requires me to press Fn+Down. My intuition told me to
try the Space key.

Fullscreen toggle was not bound to anything I could discover (f, F11 or
Ctrl+f). The function exists so I was eventually able to bind it to F11.

I suggest we should bind these (and possibly others I haven't thought
about yet) to defaults similar to web browsers.

[Bug 448029] Re: Ubuntu One client crashes during sync

Stuart,

I have tried on a fresh install of Karmic, and a fresh Ubuntu One
account (deleted old one and created a new one to get rid of
everything), and deleting all configuration from my home directory (at
least i assume so). Copying my ~300MB Documents folder into ~/Ubuntu
One still fails to upload everything.

I'm afraid I'm using Dropbox at the moment, but I will try Ubuntu One
again, to get proper logs for you on Karmic if you like.

On the other hand, Tomboy sync is working fine :)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

The standard order of application/window menus in GNOME apps seems to be:
file/action - edit - view - application specific menus - help.

The xchat-gnome window has the view menu just before help:
irc - edit - application specific menus - view -help.

The ordering of menus should be constant across the desktop, so that
they're more easily discoverable.

[Bug 456088] Re: Default calendar not default when creating a new appointment

2009-10-20 Thread Juha Siltala
Browsing upstream Bugzilla, I learned that new appointments are created
by default to the currently selected calendar, or if no calendar is
selected, to the default one (GNOME bug #303296). After testing, I can
confirm this is the case. Concequently, the current behavior not erratic
as such, but it is a little unituitive especially when the calendar view
is not visible -- a common use case: you're reading email and need to
add an appointment based on the email you're looking at. Upstream seems
to consider this a bug instead of enhancement.

Are there two issues here?

1) Showing some header information (sender, subject) in the applet, and
2) Opening the latest message in a message window instead of focusing
the full Evolution window?

My request was for the latter only, although it would indeed be nice to

Re: [Bug 353002] Re: Add option to hide persistent notification icon and add support for the indicator-applet

2009-04-01 Thread Juha Siltala
On Wed, 2009-04-01 at 14:27 +, Yannick Defais wrote:

As far as I know, the Ubuntu philosophy about the indicator-applet is to
forbid any action. Thus you'll be notified about an incoming call, but
you wont be able to accept or refuse it.

The popup only shows you a notification and indeed does not allow any
action. but the indicator-applet is a separate panel applet which is
clickable and opens the recent message, allowing you to reply.

However, refusing a call would indeed be a problem that needs further
tought.

Beside that, if there is no icon, how could you possibly show the main
window to the user to allow him to place a call?

The indicator applet has a dropdown menu listing relevant applications
(currently Pidgin and Evolution) and allows you to open the main window
just like the persistent notification area icon does if enabled.

In effect, the applet's purpose is to consolidate all these persistent
icons into one.

Finally, the Gnome HIG allow persistant icon:
 http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/desktop-notification-area.html.en
Only core GNOME programs may perpetually display an icon in the status area.

It does allow this, although it's debatable if Ekiga is core gnome,
the concept of core is not clear to me here. What the HIG says clearly
is that the persistent icon should be optional, altough the core
concept appears there again.

Still, making the icon optional has not been a problem for Pidgin and
Gajim, which have UIs very similar to Ekiga.

Hilighting a word in the xchat-gnome main chat window brings up a
