[Bug 1893270] Re: Be able to install translation of KeePass2, at the moment only in English

2020-08-27 Thread Julian Taylor
The translations need to be installed in $XDG_DATA_HOME/KeePass
XDG_DATA_HOME defaults to $HOME/.local/share

[Bug 1789448] Re: python-scipy does not work because of numpy API mismatch

2018-08-28 Thread Julian Taylor via ubuntu-bugs
you probably have a local numpy installed which is too old for the packaged
scipy
check if you get the same output:

python -c "import numpy; print(numpy)"

if it is different remove or upgrade the other numpy installation.

sure, but even if it doesn't use it at runtime somehow that still sounds

Subject: performance critical libyuv built with Os

--SrbvOHijIbL538GHuOsAk6jhGEBxW5ENR
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
Content-Language: en-GB
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Package: firefox
Version: 53.0.is.52.0.2-1
Severity: normal

libyuv which is a performance critical library for firefix is built with
-Os which is horrible for performance for it.
In particular row_common.cc which contains the generic parts of the
color transformation code:

See:
https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=3Dfirefox=3Damd64=
=3D53.0.is.52.0.2-1=3D1492644908=3D0

/usr/bin/g++ -std=3Dgnu++11 -o row_common.o -c  ...   -fPIC
-DMOZILLA_CLIENT -include
/PKGBUILDDIR/build-browser/mozilla-config.h -MD -MP -MF
=2Edeps/row_common.o.pp -Wdate-time -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=3D2 -Wall
-Wc++11-compat -Wempty-body -Wignored-qualifiers -Woverloaded-virtual
-Wpointer-arith -Wsign-compare -Wtype-limits -Wunreachable-code
-Wwrite-strings -Wno-invalid-offsetof -Wc++14-compat
-Wno-error=3Dmaybe-uninitialized -Wno-error=3Ddeprecated-declarations
-Wno-error=3Darray-bounds -fno-lifetime-dse -fstack-protector-strong
-Wformat -Werror=3Dformat-security -fno-schedule-insns2 -fno-lifetime-dse=

-fno-delete-null-pointer-checks -fno-exceptions -fno-strict-aliasing
-fno-rtti -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -fno-exceptions
-fno-math-errno -pthread -pipe -g -freorder-blocks -Os
-fomit-frame-pointer
/PKGBUILDDIR/media/libyuv/source/row_common.cc

The problematic part is the YuvPixel function which is called in loops
and in turn calls tiny clamp functions.
Os disables inlining so this causes massive overhead.
This is the top cpu profile on sites which e.g. display videos.
  17.25% libxul.so [.] YuvPixel=E2=96=92
   6.58% libxul.so [.] Clamp =E2=96=92
   6.46% libxul.so [.] clamp255

The problem is not as bad as it looks as this generic code is only
executed on machines that do not have SSSE3, AVX2 or NEON (see
convert_argb.cc)
But there are still plenty useful cpus that do not have these
instruction sets and are crippled by the compiler flags used.

Is it possible to compile this library with O3 to allow the compiler to
vectorize it with the best available generic instruction set (e.g. SSE2
on x64).

cheers,
Julian Taylor

you used the same skylake cpu on the ubuntu 14.04 version?
its probably a good bet to assume the issue was always there instead of it

if I had to guess the reason why the package does not work is that the

other cpu.

[Bug 1634142] Re: Don't use openblas cmake builds

2016-10-17 Thread Julian Taylor
the cmake change in the github issue does not fix the problem, it just causes
you to not use the broken code anymore.
can you provide a compile and runnable example for me to try?

the update 2.26.1-1ubuntu1~16.04.1 correctly created the symlinks and the perf
tool now works again and is still demangling c++ symbols correctly.
eztrace also starts but I did not test its functionality.

[Bug 1603137] [NEW] libbfd changed name without transition

2016-07-14 Thread Julian Taylor
Public bug reported:

the latest binutils update in xenial to 2.26.1-1ubuntu1~16.04 changed the name
of the libbfd library from: libbfd-2.26-system.so to libbfd-2.26.1-system.so
This apparently happened without transitioning all dependencies.
For example it broke the perf tool from the linux-tools-common package as it is
still linked against the old libbfd name.

To reproduce run "perf" with linux >= 4.4.0-24.43 and binutils
2.26.1-1ubuntu1~16.04 and you get an cannot open libbfd-2.26-system.so
error.

[Bug 1574904] Re: Old clients cannot talk to Docker in 16.04

2016-07-12 Thread Julian Taylor
it would be useful to give the package a NEWS entry that reminds admins that
the daemon needs restarting manually after an upgrade (which will also restart
running containers)
Not restarting causes docker info to report itself as 1.11.2 but building
containers causes weird errors, like '/bin/sh' not found. They fixed themselves
for me after restarting the daemon.

note that in the next docker version 1.12 the restart on update should
be handled via the --live-restore flag.

[Bug 1571811] [NEW] FFe for openblas 2.18

2016-04-18 Thread Julian Taylor
Public bug reported:

Its kind of late but I do think it would be a good idea to upgrade openblas to
the latest available version 2.18
Compared to the current version 2.15 it includes a bunch of bugfixes, some
quite important performance improvements and better support for some amd,
powerpc and arm cpus.
As the meat of openblas is largely assembly and it is somewhat prone to having
bugs, especially in its legacy code paths, having the newest version will also
simplify future backporting of patches.

[Bug 1533634] Re: Installation Issue : Dangling symlink six and decorator

2016-01-26 Thread Julian Taylor
scipy depends on python-six and python-decorator so it should have also been
present in /usr/lib/python-2.7/dist-packages/ and found.
Are these files present on your system?

I cannot reproduce the issue even when I put a six into /usr/local

note newer versions of the scipy package only symlink decorator, six is
now an embedded copy as it contains some patches.

[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue

2015-09-23 Thread Julian Taylor
a way that works for me is setting quick_boot to "0" in /etc/grub.d/10_linux
and running update-grub2
this removes the ubuntu specific save_env command via the recordfail function
this then causes the problematic check_blocklist function to not be called.

you can verify that the save_env calls are gone in /boot/grub/grub.cfg

its based on Qt. But i'm unfamiliar with how far its version 2 database support
is.

my fan is not particularly good so I'm not surprised the idle
temperature is a little higher than normal, in summer (~30°C room temp)
idle its about 45° and under full cpu load it goes up to 62°. Possibly a
bit too hot but it running perfectly fine since several years.

[Bug 1367131] Re: thermald throttles cpu to minimal frequency at 45°

2014-09-09 Thread Julian Taylor
sensors tells me the high temperature is 60° and critical temperatur is
95°

I don't want thermald ever throttling my cpu, it is a desktop machine, if its
under load it is supposed to be under load.
The only situation where I would want intervention if the fan malfunctions and
then cpu throttling is probably not going to help you anymore.

d = np.array([0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7,7, 7, 7, 7, 7,
9])
kth = [0, 3, 19, 20]
np.partition(d, kth)[kth]

output:
array([7, 3, 7, 7])

expected:
(0, 3, 7, 7)

[Regression potential]
low, the fixes where intentionally kept simple to avoid regressions.
the test coverage of numpy is good and most of its dependencies (scipy, pandas,
pytables, ..) have tested the release via their own extensive testsuites.
