[Bug 1450155] Re: If X fails to start, Plymouth should redirect to a command line login
** Description changed: Hi, - After latest kernel upgrade on Trusty 14.04.2 LTS on two of my systems, - the system did not boot, it was locked on Plymouth splash screen. + After purge of old packages with command sudo aptitude purge ~c on + Trusty 14.04.2 LTS on two of my systems, the system did not boot, it was + locked on Plymouth splash screen. The culprit is that for a reason I don't know symlink /etc/X11/X was removed during the upgrade, and X failed to start. In that case Plymouth should just fall back to a prompt shell login, otherwise there's no way to log onto the machine except SSH... Steps to reproduce : DO : Remove symlink /etc/X11/X (it occurs sometimes during kernel upgrades, I did not identify the culprit but this is not the first time I see this) DO : Reboot EXPECT : After a failed attempt to start X, Plymouth should fall back to the command prompt ACTUAL : The user is locked up and the only ways to recover are to log via SSH or in failsafe mode. - It should obviously be better that the strange thing with the X link - removed would be fixed, but anyway this would be a safeguard. + The best would be to fix the original bug, i.e. symlink to X deleted + when purging old packages. This can occur on Ubuntu LTS upgraded w/ HWE + as the xserver-xorg package changed, while this won't occur on other + systems. Hi, The trick is that I could reproduce exactly the same issue on my Dell Inspiron 1525 (without HDMI sound card) before I upgraded its Skype to version 4.3, as long as Skype was connected. [Bug 1355025] [NEW] After suspend/resume, no sound with pulseaudio
Public bug reported: HI, I've remarked the following bug, at least under KDE : DO : open your KDE session DO : launch an app which has not been set compliant with pulseaudio (for example, Skype 4.2, but in that case you need to log into the service so that it plays a sound - issue no longer reproducible with 4.3. This also works with Steam games like Civ5) DO : quit the app DO : suspend DO : wait some time, for example 15 minutes DO : resume DO : try to trigger a sound, anything (the sound tester applet in KDE is enough) EXPECT : you hear sound ACTUAL : no sound at all. Note that if you run pulseaudio -k, sound is partially restored... only for KDE apps. [Bug 1303285] [NEW] No sound after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm using the following system : Kubuntu 14.04 AMD64 AMD Phenom 9850 Mobo Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe w/ chipset NForce 570 SLI The issue that after a resume I always have no sound. The culprit is likely to be pulseaudio, as once I've killed it sound partially reappears for KDE system sounds. However for other apps, like for example VLC, this does not work. I've also remarked something very strange, i.e. after a resume another pulseaudio process is always started, don't know why, so this may be the cause of a mess, and when we attempt to kill it sound is not redirected to the PA process which was launched prior the suspend. Public bug reported: Hi, With latest systemd updates with cgmanager support, system won't boot if /usr is mounted on a different partition from /. [Bug 1295521] Re: cannot shutdown/suspend/restart from the GUI
Hi, I had both libpam-systemd:i386 and libpam-sytemd:amd64 on my AMD64 system and this confused PAM. The upstart job now works fine, I don't have the cannot start daemon. I didn't post the result of sudo start systemd-logind but it said started daemon systemd-logind or something like this. And just after that reboot and shutdown menu entries appeared in KDE but not the suspend one. The only wrong things remaining is that I cannot suspend from the GUI (but restart and shutdown appear in the KDE menu) and from lightdm suspend/reboot/shutdown entries are still disabled even after rebooting, restarting lightdm or reinstalling it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1295521 Title: cannot shutdown/suspend/restart from the GUI To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1295521/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1295521] Re: cannot shutdown/suspend/restart from the GUI
To avoid this, it might be possible to set some kind of conflict between the i386 module and the amd64 module ? OK it smells, but this might be an option. [Bug 1280719] [NEW] Latest libglib-2.0-0 or libc updates break X.org startup or restore
Public bug reported: Hi, After latest update of the following components from 2014-02-14 : libglib-2.0-0 and libc-bin my X.org always crashes when resuming from a suspend, causing a hard reboot. The strange thing is that the next reboot causes the same thing, and afterwards everything is OK again. Note that the HDD light seems to be always on. [Bug 1232357] [NEW] lightdm (kde) : shutdown, reboot and suspend grayed out
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm using lightdm with KDE team on Kubuntu Saucy. When you click the shutdown button within Lightdm interface, the shutdown, reboot and suspend buttons are actually grayed out so one could not reboot without using command line. Thus, it's impossible to do the same operations from within KDE as they turn out to be a simple disconnect, and the suspend menu entry is also missing from KDE menu. Hi, The kernel bug actually exists upstream, which is not surprising as the bug I referenced is marked as won't fix. However it turns out that there's one 1-line offending commit which broke everything, as stated in comment #10 of the bug. The commit is : http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=966f1212e1ac5fe3ddf04479d21488ddb36a2608 I can try a patched 3.8.0-xx kernel packaged for Ubuntu Raring with this fix, in order to test. Rgds, Julien. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181878 Title: Driver for hdd Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB / 1 TB prevent suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1181878/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1181878] Re: Driver for hdd Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB / 1 TB prevent suspend
I've remarked that the change to udev rules proposed as a workaround does not work, since attribute power/async is not even present under the /sys tree. My output for udevinfo for one of my HDDs : administrateur@pcathlon64:~$ sudo udevadm info -a -p /sys/block/sda [sudo] password for administrateur: Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format. A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device and the attributes from one single parent device. looking at device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda': KERNEL==sda SUBSYSTEM==block DRIVER== ATTR{ro}==0 ATTR{size}==1953525168 ATTR{stat}== 43323 186686 3049670 698632 4428 7667 293952 819040 144364 780504 ATTR{range}==16 ATTR{discard_alignment}==0 ATTR{events}== ATTR{ext_range}==256 ATTR{events_poll_msecs}==-1 ATTR{alignment_offset}==0 ATTR{inflight}== 00 ATTR{removable}==0 ATTR{capability}==50 ATTR{events_async}== looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0': KERNELS==0:0:0:0 SUBSYSTEMS==scsi DRIVERS==sd ATTRS{rev}==05.0 ATTRS{type}==0 ATTRS{scsi_level}==6 ATTRS{model}==WDC WD1002FAEX-0 ATTRS{state}==running ATTRS{queue_type}==simple ATTRS{iodone_cnt}==0xbfa2 ATTRS{iorequest_cnt}==0xc6b7 ATTRS{queue_ramp_up_period}==12 ATTRS{timeout}==30 ATTRS{evt_media_change}==0 ATTRS{ioerr_cnt}==0x12 ATTRS{queue_depth}==31 ATTRS{vendor}==ATA ATTRS{device_blocked}==0 ATTRS{iocounterbits}==32 looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/ata1/host0/target0:0:0': KERNELS==target0:0:0 SUBSYSTEMS==scsi DRIVERS== looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/ata1/host0': KERNELS==host0 SUBSYSTEMS==scsi DRIVERS== looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0/ata1': KERNELS==ata1 SUBSYSTEMS== DRIVERS== looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00/:00:05.0': KERNELS==:00:05.0 SUBSYSTEMS==pci DRIVERS==sata_nv ATTRS{irq}==21 ATTRS{subsystem_vendor}==0x1043 ATTRS{broken_parity_status}==0 ATTRS{class}==0x010185 ATTRS{consistent_dma_mask_bits}==32 ATTRS{dma_mask_bits}==32 ATTRS{local_cpus}==,,,,,,,000f ATTRS{device}==0x037f ATTRS{enable}==1 ATTRS{msi_bus}== ATTRS{local_cpulist}==0-3 ATTRS{vendor}==0x10de ATTRS{subsystem_device}==0x8239 ATTRS{numa_node}==0 ATTRS{d3cold_allowed}==1 looking at parent device '/devices/pci:00': KERNELS==pci:00 SUBSYSTEMS== DRIVERS== -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181878 Title: Driver for hdd Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB / 1 TB prevent suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1181878/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1181878] [NEW] Driver for hdd Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB / 1 TB prevent suspend
Public bug reported: This bug is actually related to bugs 1057664 and 1171560, and is an upstream bug. When I suspend my system to RAM, actually suspend does not work and instead I get a blinking cursor, and after some time system turns back again. After some debugging, I've found this within the logs of dmesg : [ 3476.964420] Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug) [ 3476.964837] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] Synchronizing SCSI cache [ 3476.964860] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Synchronizing SCSI cache [ 3476.964952] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Synchronizing SCSI cache [ 3476.964964] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Synchronizing SCSI cache [ 3476.965068] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Stopping disk [ 3476.965087] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] Stopping disk [ 3476.965121] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Stopping disk [ 3476.965141] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Stopping disk [ 3476.982377] i8042 kbd 00:0b: System wakeup enabled by ACPI [ 3476.982396] i8042 aux 00:0a: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 3476.982486] parport_pc 00:09: disabled [ 3476.982582] serial 00:08: disabled [ 3476.982585] serial 00:08: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 3507.790314] ata8.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 3507.790320] ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 3507.790322] ata8.00: failed command: STANDBY IMMEDIATE [ 3507.790324] ata3.00: failed command: STANDBY IMMEDIATE [ 3507.790329] ata8.00: cmd e0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 3507.790329] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [ 3507.790334] ata3.00: cmd e0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 3507.790334] res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/40 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [ 3507.790335] ata8.00: status: { DRDY } [ 3507.790337] ata3.00: status: { DRDY } [ 3507.790339] ata8: hard resetting link [ 3507.790340] ata8: nv: skipping hardreset on occupied port [ 3507.790341] ata3: hard resetting link [ 3507.790342] ata3: nv: skipping hardreset on occupied port [ 3508.257491] ata8: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [ 3508.257493] ata3: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [ 3508.273615] ata8.00: configured for UDMA/133 [ 3508.273618] ata8.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0 [ 3508.273629] ata8: EH complete [ 3508.273634] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] START_STOP FAILED [ 3508.273636] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] [ 3508.273637] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE [ 3508.273638] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] [ 3508.273640] Sense Key : Aborted Command [current] [descriptor] [ 3508.273642] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdd] [ 3508.273643] Add. On my system, devices sda and sdc actually point to HDDs WD Caviar Black with firmware 05.01D05. sdb and sdd point to other HDD models, not these ones. And it turns out that I get errors with these specific devices, sda and sdc. The bug is not always reproducible, sometimes suspend goes well, but sometimes it doesn't. I suspect there's something wrong with the commands sent to these devices. The bug started to be reproducible with Ubuntu 12.10, prior to this while I already owned these HDDs. The HDDs themselves are not culprit as the suspend command works on MS Windows 7. And my configuration is also not culprit as I tested with a raring liveCD and the result is the same. I don't know who must be contacted in the kernel team in order to look at this issue, if you could indicate me who this would help. [Bug 1171560] [NEW] Suspend to RAM is broken
Public bug reported: Hi, On my computer suspend to RAM is actually broken. Here's my system : AMD Phenom x4 9850 8 GB RAM Kubuntu Raring 32bits w/ PAE GeForce 660 Ti with NVidia 304 driver Actually when I suspend the OS to RAM a blinking cursor appears but the process is halted and the computer does not respond until a hard reboot is performed. [Bug 1171560] Re: Suspend to RAM is broken
Yes I'm also convinced it is an upstream bug. However I don't know which driver is faultly. I only know the following elements : - NVidia binary driver is not faultly. (I could test the same driver on another NVidia card and suspend fully worked) - None of my USB devices seem to be faultly (tried to unplug my webcam, but this did not change anything. Same thing with my Xbox controller) - The HP print driver is not faulty, other computers I have with the same driver running do not have the problem. - I suspect stg wrong with either the driver of my chipset, an NForce 570 SLI, or maybe the Sata controller driver, a JMicron XXX, as when I suspend the first hard disk (sda) is suspended but not the other ones. (I could test it with rebooting my computer and the first hard disk was not even recognized by my BIOS until I completely switched off the computer) Could you help me on that point please ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1171560 Title: Suspend to RAM is broken To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1171560/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
