[Bug 1948011] [NEW] SDDM shows a black screen when nvidia-driver-470 is updated to 470.74

2021-10-21 Thread Karsten
Public bug reported:

This bug is encountered on a computer with:

Kubuntu 21.10
MSI Gaming X Trio 3060 Ti

The following repo is used:

ppa: kubuntu-backports

GPU driver:

Nvidia driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-470(proprietary, tested)

What I expected: SDDM working just fine, showing every elements
What happened: SDDM is showing a black screen on login, logout, lockscreen. BUT
logging in works.
What I did: Updating nvidia-driver-470 from 470.63 to 470.74
What I tried to do to fix: dpkg-reconfigure sddm

I suspect something is conflicting SDDM with the 470.74 driver.
Downgrading to 470.63 will fix this problem.

[Bug 1933532] [NEW] Large Page support disabled on Raspberry Pi kernels

2021-06-24 Thread Karsten Necke
Public bug reported:

It appears that large page support and transparent hugepages are
disabled in config on the Raspberry Pi. It would be nice if they were
enabled in the kernel configuration, even if they are disabled by
default. Then they could be set in user-editable config via the
"transparent_hugepage" boot option.

With 4GB hardware in this family, there might be valid uses for large
pages.

[Bug 1872106] Re: isc-dhcp-server crashing constantly [Ubuntu 20.04]

Hi Jorge.

How to get a crash report? I simply start the service and it dies after
some seconds. Nothing in the dhcpd log is indicating a crash. The
process is simply gone.

[Bug 1879600] [NEW] Show Applications > All jitters and does not display the second page

2020-05-19 Thread Karsten Buhler
Public bug reported:

What happens:
I click on "Show Applications" and select the "All" option at the bottom. I
click on the dots on the right to try to view the next page of apps. The button
highlights and reacts to my clicks as it normally would, but I can not view the
other page of apps. When I am under "All", the "Frequent" and "All" buttons at
the bottom of the screen start to jitter up and down, as well as the dots on
the right. This goes away as soon as I switch to "Frequent". Everything
described can be seen on the attached video.

What I expect to happen:
I expect to be able to have the dots on the right allow me to view both pages
of my installed apps when I select them, and all of the elements on the screen
to display properly.

Reproduce?
I don't think that this issue can be reproduced easily, without my exact
configuration. I found almost nothing about this online. I have a fresh
install, and the issue appeared as soon as I installed Ubuntu and selected "All
Apps">"Frequent". My display is 1024x600 if that helps.

Here is my Ask Ubuntu post outlining the issue in detail:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1241165/should-i-report-show-
applications-not-scrolling-as-a-bug

Please forgive any errors, as this is my first bug report.

[Bug 1866493] [NEW] Undefined behaviour in defstruct use

2020-03-07 Thread Karsten Poeck
Public bug reported:

sbcl seem to rely on undefined behaviour in its use of defstructs with
constuctors that don't initialize all slots (sbcl seem to assume that
these slots are initialized to nil).

Example:

(defstruct (hugo (:constructor make-hugo (a))) a b)
(hugo-b (make-hugo 23))

returns nil in sbcl but #:UNBOUND in clasp (and I believe clasp is
within the standard doing this)

This - potentially wrong - pattern is used in the sbcl code base in 5
places.

The attached patched explicitely initializes the slots to nil not
covered in the constructor.

Did self build sbcl and run all tests (sucessfull).

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1550779] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun

2019-11-03 Thread Karsten Natusch
Since my upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10 my T430 is facing a similar problem
with i915 fifo underruns:

The problem occurs by switching from user A to B. If user A is logged in
and want to switch to another user B (e.g. admin), then after entering
the credentials of the user B, the system hangs up.

Sometimes the system does not hang up directly. In this case the lock
screen pops up and if I try then to enter the credentials of user B
again, then the system hangs up. If I enter the credentials of the
former already logged in user A, then system does not hang up.

Can we please bump FLOPPY_SIZE
or should I file a bug against the iso for being too big? ;)

[Bug 645404] Re: Support Private PPAs

2019-03-14 Thread Carl Karsten
please consider the CI case: headless process that runs periodically for
months without user interaction.

something like: deploy a private key (or similarly sensitive secret)
file and a publicly readable script (apt-add-repository...) and it just
runs, no browser, no user, no typing.

[Bug 1797141] Re: [nvidia] gnome-shell frequent restart or crash after unlocking screen or resume from sleep

2019-01-14 Thread Karsten W. Rohrbach
Thanks for pointing out uninstalling the shell extensions. I had the
same problem and switching off all custom shell extensions helped
instantly.

Basically, this also urges an audit of gnome-shell and associated
libraries, as this type of crash _could_ be a security issue triggered
by extensions (potentially untrusted thris party data/code).

[Bug 1807047] Re: sync hd-media FLOPPY_SIZE with debian

2018-12-09 Thread Carl Karsten
why this?
  ubuntu-18.10-server-amd64.iso
It isn't listed on
http://releases.ubuntu.com/cosmic/
I did find it on:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/18.10/release/

717M does fit so good.

What for?
hd-media installer needs it
https://launchpad.net/iso-scan
"""
debian-installer component to scan hard drives for an installer ISO image.
This is used in installer builds for removable USB drives.
"""

higher level goal: hd-media/boot.img is an fs I can mount, cp a replacement
boot loader syslinux.cfg file, done.
.iso is a read only fs, so not as easy to replace the file.

[Bug 1807047] [NEW] sync hd-media FLOPPY_SIZE with debian

2018-12-05 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

No it is not, and I would like it to be.

[Bug 1723809] Re: NetworkManager-wait-online.service slows down boot

2018-02-07 Thread Karsten Tausche
I am using Ubuntu 17.10 on different machines and noticed this problem
only on a machine that was upgraded from earlier Ubuntu version. It does
not affect my clean 17.10 installations. Could this be affected by
(incompatible) settings of previous releases?

By the way, NetworkManager-wait-online.service blocks for around 30s
even if the machine is connected to a wired network.

[Bug 1733487] [NEW] installer created invaid username

2017-11-20 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

Using this
d-i passwd/user-fullname string Video Team User

but not
# d-i passwd/username string juser

I am prompted for a username, defaults to "video"

I accept that default, and it tells me it is invalid.

I'm guessing thing that constructed the username should check against
the blacklist mentioned here:

[Bug 1628659] Re: "d-i partman/unmount_active boolean true" not working

2017-06-19 Thread Carl Karsten
I get the same message, and I have:

d-i partman/unmount_active boolean false

My case:
I have a 2nd usb stick with ubuntu-16.04.2-server-amd64.iso
the installer mounts it under /cdrom, and then asks me if I want to unmount it
so it can step on it.
perhaps this should be a special case?

Anyway, I wonder what the relation is between unmount_active and
"Do you want the installer to try to unmount...?"

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2017-06-08 Thread Karsten W. Rohrbach
Just to chime in, running 16.04.2 LTS on a Lenovo E540.
I had this behaviour in dual head operation with an external full hd display.
I recently changed to a pivot QHD display, that operates in portrait mode.
I am losing windows frequently after returning from a locked screen.
This is a rather annoying and repeatable behaviour:
- I open a few applications, say, thunderbird, firefox and a terminal
- I need to leave, activate screen lock
- I return, unlock
- thunderbird window is lost, the dot is still displayed in unity's dock
- the window dows not return when clicking the application icon
- only solution is to right-click the icon, close the app and re-open it

It wasn't my choice to where to install grub, the installer / partman?
make the wrong choice. I think.

[Bug 728710] Re: d-i apt-setup/local0/repository not working

2016-07-06 Thread Carl Karsten
Seems squid-deb-proxy is deliberately strict by default, if the user
wants to use ppas, they need to enable this.

juser@dc10b:/etc/squid-deb-proxy/mirror-dstdomain.acl.d$ cat 10-default
# /etc/squid-deb-proxy/mirror-dstdomain.acl.d/10-default
#
# network destinations that are allowed by this cache

# launchpad personal package archives (disabled by default)
#ppa.launchpad.net
#private-ppa.launchpad.net

[Bug 1587889] Re: Installing grub on '/dev/md126p1 system doesn't boot

2016-06-08 Thread Carl Karsten
More info:

I am installing onto two servers that I bought used. I have no idea how
they were configured. The hope was that the installer would just
replace whatever was there.

I did get 2 dialogs:
(from memory)
1. Do you want to enable raid?
2. do you want to enable serial ata? (made me think "sata is not enabled by
default?" but it was not that. )

The first time I answered Yes to both, the 2nd time no. no difference.

[SCSI] hpsa: allow SCSI mid layer to handle unit attention

We were clobbering the SCSI status and setting
cmd->result = DID_SOFT_ERROR << 16; to get a retry,
but better to let the mid layer handle the unit
attention.

[Bug 1375740] [NEW] Grub fails to install with Kubuntu 14.04.01 LTS LiveUSB - Try Kubuntu Option

2014-09-30 Thread Karsten Reitan Sørensen
Public bug reported:

First I had trouble with danish language system setting, but i guess
thats a different bug

This install is default language settings, with additional language
support downloaded as asked by the 'Try Kubuntu' option when loaded.

Language setting: default
Locale setting: Copenhagen ...
Keyboard setting: Danish

The grub should install to a windows disk. It failed to access the disk
and so did Dolphin. Then i ran Dolphin as: 'sudo Dolphin' which gave
following error, but was able to access the windows drive:

Then I tried: 'sudo ubiquity kde_ui' It ran up until the Grub install.
No error message in terminal window, but a dialog window telling about:
'Grub install failed, this is a fatal error'

Next after running: 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity' it gave the following:

[Bug 1061580] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in _XSERVTransClose()

2014-07-05 Thread Karsten Wilmesmeyer
Hello, i got the same error after log into my brandnew installed ubuntu 14.04.
It was the second time installing the system
with no error at the first installation.
The difference lies in activating the SATA-AHCI-BIOS-option for my hdd at the
second installation. Switching it back no error
appears.

ausb[13]1?.c files where
I believe the free that causes the exception is for example at ausb3.c:306.
The ausb_close
implementations in all 4 files look similar, with the difference that ausb1.c
and ausb3.c call
usb_close and ausb11 and ausb31 call libusb_close.

[Bug 1329824] [NEW] Installer fails to install grub into MBR

2014-06-13 Thread Karsten Schwank
Public bug reported:

I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 64bit on a slightly old desktop
machine.

Booting from USB works fine, the installation runs up to almost the end, but
then reports it couldn't install grub into the MBR of my harddisk.
My harddisk is a single SSD attached to an nvidia on-board raid controller in
JBOD mode.

In syslog it tells be something about an unsupported raid level 255
and chroot /target grub-install --force /dev/mapper/nvidia_asdfdfss
failing.

Since I used the same installer to install Ubuntu on another machine, I
am pretty sure it's okay, and up until I decided to do a fresh install
using an SSD, I had a Kubuntu 12.04 running on this machine with the
same hardware configuration, except that I had a HDD instead of the SSD,
so in principle it should work, somehow.

Would be great if somebody has an idea what I could try next.

Thanks for your support and let me know if I can be of any further
assistance.

Cheers,
Karsten

[Bug 1270572] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 should have gnome-tweak-tool installed by default because of many settings that are missed gnome-control-center

2014-05-28 Thread Karsten W. Rohrbach
Would it be possible to reintegrate the old advanced settings dialogue?
I mean, this is really a show stopper if you're using Model M keyboards from a
decent series that do not have a Windows key. On all my systems I have mapped
Caps Lock to Super L to access the menus.

[Bug 1323795] [NEW] pcscd crashes when removing usb chipcard reader

2014-05-27 Thread Karsten Schwank
Public bug reported:

pcscd (1.8.10-1ubuntu1) crashed reproducibly in Ubuntu 14.04LTS when I remove
my Reiner SCT chipcard reader.
The reader uses the libifd-cyberjack6 driver. I tried with the driver version
from the Ubuntu repositories first, when
that failed I also tried with the ones provided from the manufacturer's
homepage, but pcscd crashes in both cases.

I ran pcscd in debug mode attached the chipcard reader, inserted and
removed the chipcard a couple of times and got this output:

[Bug 1241632] Re: LDAP support auth not working

2014-04-24 Thread Karsten Richter
Fix for Trusty (following dgkim's solution):

1. download
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/ejabberd/2.1.11-1ubuntu2/+files/ejabberd_2.1.11-1ubuntu2.tar.gz
2. apply flatforms patch on src/eldap.erl
3. Compile the ASN.1 dependency: erlc -bber ELDAPv3.asn
4. Compile eldap.erl: erlc -DSSL40 -I ../ -pz ../ eldap.erl
5. replace eldap.beam in /usr/lib/ejabberd/ebin/

NOTE: also for saucy I'm quite sure it is eldap.erl and not eldapd.erl
(typo in dgkims solution).

LDAP auth works again like a charm after that patch (ejabberd 2.1.11 on
trusty AMD64)

[Bug 1280147] [NEW] As an occasional synaptic user I want the Find dialog to default to Look in: Description and Name at program start, to be able to find a package I look for without irritation.

2014-02-14 Thread Karsten W. Rohrbach
Public bug reported:

Not a bug, but usability.

Most of the time I use apt-get for package management.
Sometimes I use synaptic, especially when looking for packages, optional
installs, desccriptions, screenshots, etc.
I use the find dialog (Ctrl-F) very often.

The find dialog saves the last used value of Look in: between sessions.
This is an annoyance, causing irritation very often.
It would be much more usable if the Look in: field would be initialized to
Description and Name once, at program start.

Qt Creator 3.0 Rc1 do not work for with Qt 4.8.x projects. It never
attaches to the process for some strange reason.

[Bug 1233662] Re: Missing debug helpers in QtCreator/can't view STL containers in debugger

2013-12-03 Thread Karsten
I've working on a huge qt 4.8 project with lots of share libraries and
multiple applications in same project and I've been debugging this
happily without any problem on 13.04 when I updated to 13.10 and gdb got
update to never version (7.6.1 with python 3) a few weeks ago my problem
started.

This is that i've tried:
* Installed Qt-Creator GDB 7.4.1, linked executable to bin as gdb - no
attachment to procress
* Installed Qt-Creator 3.0 rc1 and restored gdb to 7.6.1 again, no attachment
to process in for Qt 4.8.x projects BUT Qt 5.1.1 projects works fine :s

Strange thing is that I did have Qt-Creator 3.0 up and running and could
do break-points but only for a day when it did not work again.

[Bug 1116512] Re: Double-clicking password entry from overview freezes entire system

2013-07-25 Thread Karsten
on Julian's comment #13 -
actually I've seen at least one occurence of the issue after I installed
libmono-system-runtime2.0-cil (on a 32bit 12.04 machine). So I guess I'll
uninstall xsel then.

2013-07-03 Thread Karsten
I'm seeing this issue also, on two machines under 12.04 (one 64, one 32
bit ubuntu installs).

On David's questions in #9:
- 1: libmono-system-runtime2.0-cil package is NOT installed
- 2: I have yet to find a way to intentionally reproduce the issue - actually
it's rather sporadic
- 3: I'll try to do that the next time I see the issue..

[Bug 879334] Re: nfsd from nfs-kernel-server very slow and system load from 25%-100% from nfsd

2013-05-17 Thread Karsten Suehring
I did some testing with a newer kernel on Debian a while ago. The 3.x
series seemed to have higher load indeed, but as far as I could test, it
did not kill the server. If you have multiple clients to the server it
would be a good test to start several writes (like dd from /dev/random)
over NFS and see if the server can handle that. It did not many writes
to completely kill my server on 12.04.

It would be good news to hear that just by upgrading to newer kernel
versions in later releases this issue would be resolved even without
Ubuntu proactively working on a fix. But it will still remain an issue
in the Long term support release 12.04.

My bottom line here is that Ubuntu is apparently caring more about
mobile phones now than servers which is especially unfortunate after
many people finally talked Dell into more support for Ubuntu. I did not
even get a reply from the Ubuntu sales department (except for an
automatic reply which promised to do so within two days) when we offered
to pay for resolving the issue...

[Bug 1130539] Re: kernel bug msg when doing a btrfs balance

2013-02-21 Thread Karsten Schurig
I installed the kernel you suggested and started a btrfs balance
process.

Linux version 3.8.0-030800-generic (root@gomeisa) (gcc version 4.6.3
(Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201302181935 SMP Tue Feb 19 00:36:19
UTC 2013

The bug I reported did not occur again.
Besides that i got rid of alot other problems too:
- no more no space left errors
- no more cache entry did not match inode cache .. warnings
- remaining space on HDDs is shown correctly
- data went from metadata chunks to data chunks as it should on btrfs balance,
now total data in metadata chunks is a bit about a gigabyte which seems much
more realistic to me than ~500GB.

So I resume that the bug is fixed in the upstream kernel but
another bug occured where should I report it ?
Shall I link it to this report ?
