[Bug 1741303] [NEW] compiz crashing on attempts to start apps

2018-01-04 Thread Ken Speakman
Public bug reported:

If I use the Windows (Super Key?) compiz crashes and restarts, it's the same if
I try something from the status bar or start something from the menu on the
left hand side. I can right click on the desktop to start terminal which I can
use to start firefox or apport..., but I can't switch between windows because
compiz crashes again, and windows don't really work properly. Firefox won't
accept any input. dmesg does give information, but I have to remember what it
says. I can't go back to the terminal, get the information and paste it here.
There is a seg fault and it gives Error 4.
The problem started today, and a re-boot or two hasn't fixed it.

[Bug 1490504] [NEW] unity-tweak-tool won't run - missing schema

2015-08-31 Thread Ken Speakman
Public bug reported:

On a clean virtualbox 5.02 installation, I installed vboxadditions, rebooted,
ran updates and then install synaptic so that I could install the
unity-tweak-tool. It installed OK.
It did not show up when I searched for the app with the super key, and when I
tried to execute it from a terminal, it refused to run. It reported missing
schema:
org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchpad
Using apt-get install, I installed the gnome settings daemon.
There was no change to the error message.
Perhaps I need to reboot.

[Bug 1473622] Re: File extension is always AIFF when exporting an audio track in every format

2015-07-11 Thread Ken Speakman
I get the same thing. My preferred export format is ogg (as seen in my
audacity.cfg), but aiff is always shown.
If I export as ogg, but let the aiff extension stay, I am warned about the
using aiff extension on an ogg file.
If I proceed without changing the extension to ogg, nautilus shows aiff in the
basic properties, but indicates ogg as the codec in the audio properties.
If the file I am editing has an extra . in the filename before the extension,
aiff is not appended to the filename at export.
I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 15.04 and everything is up to date and was a fresh
installation to a new HDD.

[Bug 1317250] [NEW] Synaptic displays applications list incorrectly after selecting an application for installation

2014-05-07 Thread Ken Speakman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1309369 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1309369

Public bug reported:

If I enter a search term in the Quick filter box, select an application
(either for installation or removal), the list of applications immediately
refreshes, but it shows the list of applications as it was before I entered the
search term. If I move the mouse up and down the pane showing applications, it
redraws each line with the applications that should be there.
For instance, before I enter firefox-gl in the Quick filter with the Status
radio button selected and Not installed selected, the first applications
shown are 0ad, 0ad-data and 0ad-data-common, etc. When I enter firefox-gl, it
shows firefox-locale-gl, semanticscuttle and firefox-globalmenu. As soon as I
select one of these 3 applications by putting a tick in the Status box, the
list of applications is redrawn, but it shows the 0ad etc instead of
firefox-locale-gl etc. The list is correctly redrawn when the mouse is moved
about this pane of the window. I get the same effect if I select an application
for removal. This happens if my search term produces any number of matches.
The phenomenon is not confined to this i3 Ironlake laptop, it has also been
seen on an Intel Pentium dual core desktop (one with DDR2 ram) running Xubuntu,
and the symptoms were the same. Both systems are 64bit.
The system I am reporting this problem on is running 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 LTS,
synaptic is 0.81.1 (from the About in the help tab). It is a clean install.
As is the Xubuntu machine. The computer has been kept up to date at all times
and the phenomenon has persisted throughout.

[Bug 998391] [NEW] Stellarium crashes soon after start up.

2012-05-12 Thread Ken Speakman
Public bug reported:

I had used stellarium for a week or two without trouble, then I
installed opera (deb file downloaded from opera.com). Thereafter
stellarium was unuseable - it crashed with a segmentation fault. After
trying re-installation and uninstalling opera, reboots and even trying a
newer version of of stellarium (11.2), it still crashes with the same
message. I have returned to 11.0 from the Ubuntu Precise repository
without any change. When called from the keyboard the report is:
stellarium: ../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:1579: do_bo_emit_reloc:
Assertion `offset = bo-size - 4' failed.

I can provoke the crash by searching for the moon and then reversing
time. Just now, (11:30 BST) I went backwards quite quickly and it froze
at 04:23 BST, a minute or so later I repeated the operation and it froze
at 04:38 BST. It does crash under other circumstances, but this is an
easy way of getting it to happen.

[Bug 982559] Re: [power]: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__OBJECTv()

2012-04-20 Thread Ken Speakman
Now that my bug (Bug #984874 ) has been declared the same as this one, I'll add
my comment here:
The bug occurred when running from a CD on my 8 year old Toshiba laptop, but
now that I've installed the Beta 2, nothing has crashed or played up. In fact
it beats the pants off every release since 9.04 for good behaviour - it runs
better than 11.10 xubuntu and seems to equal it in performance (boot, start up
of applications), except for shutdown, where now it always shuts down without
freezing.

[Bug 437883] Re: blueman-applet crashed with DBusException in call_blocking()

2012-03-17 Thread Ken Speakman
I've just installed 12.04 Beta1 32bit in virtualbox (64 bit 10.04 system).
I got the error message during apt-get upgrade. I used synaptic to download the
updates (342 of them).
I then did the upgrade from the keyboard. This appears to have worked as I have
just been advised to restart firefox.

2011-08-22 Thread Ken Speakman
After a reboot, I managed to uninstall with apt-get purge followed by an
autoremove to remove the dependencies. There may well be problems with
nanny, which is why I don't think I'll try again, but the synaptic
problem that triggered this bug report seems to have been resolved
satisfactorily.

[Bug 677879] [NEW] Memory leak in twistd when running firefox nanny

2010-11-20 Thread Ken Speakman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nanny

This happened in Lucid as well. If left unattended, all ram (1GB on this Compaq
D310 2.4GHz system) and all swap will be used up in a matter of minutes.
According to System Monitor, the process with the leak is twistd.
The installation was made using wubi.
My laptop suffers the same fate with Lucid (the dependencies are compatible if
using maverick's nanny). This is a 2.6GHz Celeron with Intel i8 graphics and
suffers from kslowd wrecking video audio playback if I install maverick. It's
a dual boot system.

Re: [Bug 184887] Re: OpenOffice crashes when importing csv file into calc

2008-03-12 Thread Ken Speakman
Hi Chris,
I've found something else that produces a similar effect - it's a powerpoint
and it's quite small. It doesn't produce the never-ending loop, but it does
crash openoffice.

not export as csv it only exports as vcards.

Re: [Bug 184887] Re: OpenOffice crashes when importing csv file into calc

2008-02-29 Thread Ken Speakman
Hi Chris,
apologies for not sending the .csv file any sooner. I can't set up a file that
produces the problem without including email addresses - if I edit the .csv
file, the import works OK, but on a csv file created by an email client, the
problem shows itself reliably. Rather than send you an extract from my address
book, could I suggest you export some addresses from your own (I use
Thunderbird) as a .csv. If this doesn't show the problem, I'll send a small
address book to you.
Regards,
Ken Speakman

Chris Cheney [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ken,

That will be fine, actually the smaller the file that shows the problem
the better.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [Bug 184887] Re: OpenOffice crashes when importing csv file into calc

2008-02-15 Thread Ken Speakman
Hi Chris,
the file that caused the problem was an address book exported from Outlook
Express. I don't want to send a file with personal information in it, so when I
get a chance, perhaps on Sunday, I'll try to produce a file that exhibits the
problem.

  Ken Speakman

  I am running openoffice.org 1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3 from gutsy-updates. I
created a test csv file and was able to open it fine with calc when
writer wasn't running. I also tried removing ~/.openoffice.org2 dir and
it still was able to open the file just fine. Can you please attach a
simple test case file that exhibits the problem?

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

[Bug 184887] OpenOffice crashes when importing csv file into calc

2008-01-21 Thread Ken Speakman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The csv file is an address book exported from Outlook Express. The
import process into calc works perfectly, but after a few seconds, it
crashes and immediately recovers the file. The crash-recover sequence
appears to be endless. If, however, I start OpenOffice writer first, I
can import the file into calc, edit it and save it with complete
success. In fact, once OpenOffice writer has been run, calc no longer
crashes! This is with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, which is kept up to date at
all times. The cpu is Pentium 4 1.7GHz 512M ram on an Aopen motherboard
