[Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 on Linux 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04)

2024-05-24 Thread Kenneth W Green
I have back tracked to the duplicate bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1958191 and followed the suggested fix,
which was patch grub boot;-

Patched my grub boot file GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2"

sudo update-grub and restarted machine

Works a treat no more screen flicker after upgrade to 24.04 and several
reboots just to be sure fix worked on Dell Insperion 9555 i7 64/16Gb 1Tb
Radeon GPU.

[Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 on Linux 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04)

2024-05-22 Thread Kenneth W Green
Hi, OK I have tried both temporary and permanent grub boot changes with
modified intel_idle.max_cstate=2 and 4 and on all occasions after grub
update and reboot the boot splash page is steady the login page flickers
badly and the desktop settles but still flickers.

Tks for the help but unfortunately workaround does not work on the Dell
Insperion 955 Intel i7 64/16Gb 1tb Radeon GPU. Ive include a snap shot
of my patched grub boot file.

[Bug 2064189] Re: Screen flickers after installing Ubuntu 24.04

2024-05-22 Thread Kenneth W Green
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2062951 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2062951

I have reverted and re-installed 24.04 upgrade on two occasions both
times,, same issue,

This work round only slows the occurrences of flickering, it does not
fix the issue for me on my Dell Insperion 9555 Intel i7 64/16Gb 1Tb
Radeon GPU.

2024-05-22 Thread Kenneth W Green
Ive never had the issue with any distro.

So okay the bug is confirmed and it has a duplicate but in none of the

** Description changed:

  Device Specs are a HP Prodesk 600 G4 DM.  1 stick DDR4 2666mhz 16gb and
I7-8600T CPU.
  I am running an application that uses a touch screen that turns off the
monitor when not used. It uses the DPMS time out commands on the monitor. I
have manually triggered the crash using ssh into the computer. Turning off the
monitor manually does not cause it. I have ran the monitor from usbc combined
as well as power and hdmi only to verify that it is not an issue with the touch
screen drivers.

  Using tail -f on /var/log/Xorg.0.log, Xorg.1.log and on syslogd. I can
  see xserver issue the command and then starts spamming the mode line
  information from the monitor when the monitor disconnects. Within a
  second the syslog reports "snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: HDMI: pin nid
  7 not registered" and then within 5 seconds the computer reboots.I
  have tried collecting a kdump, but when enabled, the computer is
  permanently frozen and the power button has to be held down to reboot
  the machine. When testing the Kdump with the ssh trigger crash, the
  crash log is generated properly.

  This bug may be similar to https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/alsa-
  devel/patch/20190716144111.1470-1-ti...@suse.de/  I cannot confirm
  however on the behavior. It could be that the xserver package is trying
  to use the something when the monitor is in suspend or off. No crash
  occurs when the monitor is disconnected or when the monitor shutsdown.
  Only when the monitor enters a DPMS state does the kernel panic.

  I am attaching 4 ssh terminals from when I induced a crash.

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-04 Thread Kenneth Loafman
All systems run a bit strange if disk space runs out, most not too
gracefully. duplicity will estimate the space needed on the local
system to run duplicity, but cannot check the remote. It will fail with
whatever status the remote returns, which you should then correct if
possible. I don't know what caused your truncation, but the error
message should now be clearer and have the responsible filename in it.

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-03 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Good catch on the script.

Looks like you've run afoul of two bugs, one in Samba and one in
duplicity:

1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/duplicity/+bug/385495 - no solution yet.

2. Google "samba large file size". Looks like 2GB is the limit. I
suspect the file was written on the last backup and samba simply
truncated it at 2GB. The only option suggested in what I read was to
mount the drive as in https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-access-files-
greater-than-2gb-samba, and samba will accept the LFS. There may be a
way to do it in config.

I would suggest mounting the drive with LFS enabled and rerunning the backup
after running
"duplicity cleanup --force ".

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-02 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Thank you for responding.

I'm convinced the error is a truncated .gz file, but duplicity is not
telling us which one. So, let's go to the source directly.

On your remote machine:

$ cd /home/scohen/Taormina
$ for f in *.gz; do echo "--- $f ---"; tar tzf $f; done

This will list the index of all the *.gz files and failure should
indicate which one is truncated. That file will be the one with '---
filename ---' prior to the error.

Then we can figure out what to do next.

I'd like a log file, please. This is going to be big and I only need a
portion. Please run duplicity with -v9, redirect to a log file, then
run:

$ head -n 200 < log > log.head
$ tail -n 200 < log > log.tail

Attach, do NOT copy/paste, log.head and log.tail to this bug report.

I fixed this by building on core20 and specifying "; python_version ==

[Bug 1948597] Re: TypeError: load() missing 1 required positional argument: 'Loader'

2022-02-15 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Because snapcraft from deb is available on GitLab and should be kept up-
to-date by Ubuntu.

I tried on 20.04 with the following GitLab job:

build_snap:
stage: deploy
when: manual
image: ubuntu:20.04
only: [master]
script:
- apt-get update
- apt-get upgrade -y
- apt-get install -y snapd snapcraft
- snap install snapd classic
- snap install snapcraft classic
- VERSION=`./setup.py --version`
- echo "make snap of ${VERSION}"
- ./setup.py sdist --dist-dir=.
- rm -rf build
- mkdir -p build
- tar xf duplicity-${VERSION}.tar.gz -C build
- rm -f duplicity-${VERSION}.tar.gz
- cd build/duplicity-${VERSION}
- head -2 snap/snapcraft.yaml | tail -1
- echo $SNAPCRAFT_LOGIN_FILE | base64 --decode --ignore-garbage >
snaplogin
- snapcraft login --with snaplogin
- rm snaplogin
- snapcraft snap
- snapcraft push duplicity_*.snap --release edge

It gets to the 3rd step, successfully installs snapd and hangs on
installing snapcraft. I need snapd and snapcraft so I can bootstrap
snapd and snapcraft snaps from the store.

[Bug 1948528] Thank you for your help

2021-12-04 Thread Kenneth Ruby
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1767654 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767654

Hello Daniel,

I want to thank you for your help in solving my left-edge cursor bug in
Linux Mint/Ubuntu.

My original post was at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1948528, and you
responded with a very kind note and forwarded me to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767654, where I found the workaround
solution from Bob Lawrence's comment.

Since I am a non-technical user of Linux Mint, and since I make bug
reports very rarely (this was my first one), can you suggest a method
for filing a bug report if I find a bug in the future? I don't
understand things like, for example, where to find my GPG key for making
a new bug report.

I also don't know how best to communicate with you, so I used all 3
email addresses that were associated with this bug report -- sorry about
the redundancy.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Ruby
Linux Mint user

[Bug 1767654] Re: [Intel Braswell] Cursor gets stuck on left side of the screen

2021-12-03 Thread Kenneth Ruby
On my system I found that the left-edge cursor malfunction began in
Linux Mint 19.3. The malfunction was unchanged when I tested with live-
boot thumbsticks for Ubuntu, MX, and Manjaro. With the live-boot
thumbstick for EndeavourOS, the left-edge problem was absent, but the
cursor showed extreme flickering and multiple copies of itself.

I also noted that at the moment when the mouse cursor started
flickering, the left-edge cursor malfunction ceased entirely.

Computer: Gigabyte Brix GB-BACE-3160
Processor: Intel Celeron Braswell J3160 @ 1.60GHz × 4
System: Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon 5.0.7
Kernel: 5.13.0.21 generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Graphics: Intel Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Integrated

pilotbob42's suggested command (Thank you) fixes the left-edge cursor
malfunction
xrandr --output HDMI-3 --transform 1,0,-1,0,1,0,0,0,1

[Bug 1950766] Re: 5.13.0-21 breaks wifi ath11k / mhi

2021-11-13 Thread Kenneth Rawlings
Just a quick note for others. I had to fully turn off my laptop before
booting to 5.13.0-20 for things to work. From something said in the
upstream bug, sounds like the hardware may get into a weird state from
booting 5.13.0-21 that can't be remedied by a warm reboot.

Will use previous kernel as @stelian suggests. Had to use a usb ethernet
adapter to find this.
Also have an XPS 9310 like stelian so logs/dumps from me would just be a repeat.

[Bug 1948528] [NEW] Mouse pointer doesn't reach left edge of screen

2021-10-23 Thread Kenneth Ruby
Public bug reported:

In the live-boot USB stick of Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS:

My mouse pointer does not visually reach the left edge of the screen.
Logically the pointer functionality does reach the left edge, in the
sense that it can select and copy text that extends to the left edge,
but the pointer cannot be viewed performing this action; the displayed
pointer stops (appears frozen) about two millimeters from the left edge.

The pointer reaches the upper, lower, and right edges of the screen
without any problem.

My mouse and screen are brand new. My computer is 5 years old (launch
2016, purchase 2019).

I have the same problem with my Linux Mint (Cinnamon and Mate desktops),
which is based on Ubuntu. I perform regular updates to the system. The
file /var/log/Xorg.0.log does not show any errors or warnings related
to the mouse.

The problem in Linux Mint persists even if I change:

- Screen resolution
- Theme
- Windows settings (Focus mode)
- General settings (VSync method, Compositing)
- Mouse acceleration and sensitivity
- Disabling of all Effects

Note that there is no problem with the mouse pointer with a live-boot
USB stick containing Linux EndeavourOS.

run:

$ head -n 200 < log > log.head
$ tail -n 200 < log > log.tail

[Bug 1944642] Re: Xenial (ESM) - 4.15.0-156 creates event storm when ejecting DVD-ROM media

2021-09-23 Thread Kenneth Lakin (VMware)
Hello Tim!

I'm familiar with using 'git bisect' to track down bugs, but not so
familiar with working with Debian packages. (My primary Linux is Gentoo,
and don't _usually_ deal directly with Debian packages at work.) Will
the process for this be:

You build some number of kernel package .debs and send them to me, along
with instructions on how to correctly switch to each one and in which
order I should switch. I then tell you between which two the bug
appears?

If yes (or something pretty similar), yeah, I have time for that.

[Bug 1944642] [NEW] Xenial (ESM) - 4.15.0-156 creates event storm when ejecting DVD-ROM media

2021-09-22 Thread Kenneth Lakin (VMware)
Public bug reported:

Hello! I'm a programmer employed by VMWare. We're using Ubuntu Xenial,
have an ESM contract, and have run into what we believe to be a nasty
interaction between a kernel change and the `cdrom_id --eject-media`
command. This problem started happening after upgrading from 4.15.0-154
to 4.15.0-156.

I am reporting a kernel "device change" event storm that appears to not
stop on its own and is triggered by both ejecting media from a DVD-ROM
drive AND having a udev rule which contains the following line:

ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode",
GOTO="cdrom_end"

If you eliminate this line from your udev rule file, the storm will
never happen. This strongly suggests that the cdrom_id program is a key
component in the problem. As mentioned before, this problem happened
after we upgraded from kernel 4.15.0-154 to kernel 4.15.0-156 as part of
a regular update to the Canonical-included packages that we use as a
base for our system. Based on the evidence, we believe that this is a
regression from kernel version 4.15.0-154.

This storm prevents new media inserted into the drive from being
recognized and mounted. In order for any new media inserted into the
drive to be recognized, one must terminate the storm by do one of two
things:

Either:
Move `/lib/udev/cdrom_id` to some other location, wait for a moment for the
storm to stop, then move it back. Media inserted into the drive will be
immediately recognized.
or:
Insert the media several times until it stays inserted. In testing "several"
has been "three or four", but I have no idea of the upper or lower bounds of
this number. Each time you insert the media, it will be automatically removed
from the VM. On the insertion immediately _before_ the one that actually works,
the event storm will stop, and the media will be -again- automatically removed.
On the next insertion, the media will stay in, and you will be able to actually
mount the media inside the VM.

When you look at the output of `udevadm monitor -u -k` during the event
storm the following event is generated at a rate roughly ten times per
second:

KERNEL[3198.914510] change
/devices/pci:00/:00:07.1/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sr0
(block)
UDEV  [3199.021261] change
/devices/pci:00/:00:07.1/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sr0
(block)

Relevant system information:
OS:  Ubuntu Xenial ESM
IAAS: vSphere 7.0
uname -a output: Linux test-machine 4.15.0-156-generic #163~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP
Mon Aug 23 13:38:23 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Likely Reproduction Steps:
1) Boot a machine (virtual or otherwise) with an attached DVD-ROM drive with
the 4.15.0-156-generic kernel.
2) Insert media into the drive.
3) Eject the media.
4) Notice that `udevadm monitor -u -k` is showing you an endless stream of
"device change" events.

If you need any additional information or resources from us, please
don't hesitate to ask. I expect that if you folks need a vSphere
environment, we'll be able to provide one.

[Bug 1743247] Re: B2 Python APIs are missing

2021-06-24 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Two options for now:
- upgrade to the _latest_ (dev) version of duplicity,
- revert to b2sdk==1.7.0 until duplicity 0.8.20 is released

To revert do: _sudo pip install -U b2sdk==1.7.0_

There are multiple options for latest:

- Latest snap builds - “sudo snap install duplicity —classic —edge"
- Latest pip3 builds - “sudo pip3 install --pre duplicity"
- Latest duplicity PPA -
https://code.launchpad.net/\~duplicity-team/+archive/ubuntu/duplicity-develop-git

Note 1: UNINSTALL duplicity first if it was installed from a different
source..  This is due to divergent install locations, especially between
repository installs and the other forms.

Note 2: Launchpad PPAs contain builds for Bionic 18.04, Eoan 19.10,
Focal 20.04, Hirsute 20.10 and Impish 21.04.

Note 3: Xenial 16.04 works with Snap and Pip installs, but cannot be
built under Launchpad PPAs at the moment.

[Bug 487720] Re: Restore fails with "Invalid data - SHA1 hash mismatch"

2021-06-22 Thread Kenneth Loafman
I need to find a reproducible scenario.

There are hardware reasons for network transfers to drop bits and there
are software reasons for the problem. I think we are seeing a mix of
both. I've had downloads fail when going through a non-parity checking
router, so that's one for hardware. I've yet to reproduce it in a
reliable scenario with just software.

2021-06-05 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Are there any funny or escaped characters in BUCKET_NAME (from the first
log/traceback)?

We pass the URL as a unicode string. Somehow boto/urllib thinks its a
byte string.

Yes, it should be urllib3. We keep the older boto+s3:// around because
it is still needed.

Try using the boto3+s3:// backend instead.

It's not in duplicity, but in urllib. Do this to upgrade all modules we
use:

$ sudo python3 -m pip install -U -r requirements.txt

where requirements.txt is from:

https://git.launchpad.net/duplicity/plain/requirements.txt

Let me know how it goes.

[Bug 1930152] Re: duplicity 0.8.12 fails to complete backup

2021-05-30 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Please upgrade to the current version of duplicity, 0.8.19.  This will
assure that any bugs fixed since your release are available and may fix
your issue.  See Notes below.

There are multiple options both stable and latest:
- Stable snap builds - “sudo snap install duplicity —classic"
- Latest snap builds - “sudo snap install duplicity —classic —edge"
- Stable pip3 builds - “sudo pip3 install duplicity"
- Latest pip3 builds - “sudo pip3 install --pre duplicity"
- Stable duplicity PPA -
https://code.launchpad.net/~duplicity-team/+archive/ubuntu/duplicity-release-git
- Latest duplicity PPA -
https://code.launchpad.net/~duplicity-team/+archive/ubuntu/duplicity-develop-git
- Stable tarball install - https://launchpad.net/duplicity/+download
- Source - https://gitlab.com/duplicity/duplicity

Note 1: UNINSTALL duplicity first if it was installed from a different
source..  This is due to divergent install locations, especially between
repository installs and the other forms.

Note 2: Launchpad PPAs contain builds for Bionic 18.04, Eoan 19.10,
Focal 20.04,  Hirsute 20.10 and Impish 21.04.

Note 3: Xenial 16.04 works with Snap and Pip installs, but cannot be
built under Launchpad PPAs at the moment.

[Bug 1923328] Re: xrdp wants to remove lubuntu-desktop on lubuntu

2021-04-11 Thread Kenneth Heal
Further digging around revealed https://c-nergy.be/blog/?p=13390 blog
post.

So, there is a need to rebuild xrdp against HWE 18.04 on Ubuntu 18.04.2.

Maybe Ubuntu should provide a new binary package, let’s say “xrdp-
hwe-18.04″…

For now, I’ve recompiled the same xrdp from Ubuntu 18.04, on Ubuntu
18.04.2 and uploaded to my “XRP PPA”, here:

https://launchpad.net/~martinx/+archive/ubuntu/xrdp-hwe-18.04

To enjoy xrdp on Ubuntu 18.04 with HWE, just do:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:martinx/xrdp-hwe-18.04
sudo apt install xrdp xorgxrdp

Bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1817225
===

In short the following steps resolved the issue:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:martinx/xrdp-hwe-18.04
$ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04
xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04
$ sudo apt-get install xrdp xorgxrdp xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi
$ sudo adduser xrdp ssl-cert
$ grep ^X11Forwarding /etc/ssh/sshd_config
X11Forwarding yes
$ cat ~/.xsession
#!/bin/sh

/usr/bin/lxsession -s Lubuntu -e LXDE

Thanks for the update, I was under the impression 18.04 is an LTS

Anyway I think I may have solved the issue with the following:

[Bug 1921563] [NEW] i apologize i closed the error window, but at the end of the installation, something failed to install

2021-03-26 Thread Kenneth James Green
Public bug reported:

the issue happened when installing the operating system, everything
installed and worked just fine and i still got the installation complete
you need to restart in order to use the new installation, but at the end
i ran into an issue where it said that it failed to install a particular
thing, i would tell you what it was exactly but i kind of did a stupid
thing and closed out that error report.
