[Bug 1449525] Re: icon openshot sooo big

2015-04-30 Thread Kevin Godby
I've attached a screenshot of my desktop which shows an OpenShot file
with a huge icon (at its original size—I can't reduce its size)
alongside a regular folder icon.

** Package changed: firefox (Ubuntu) = openshot

** Attachment added: OpenShot project file icon size compared to folder icon
size

[Bug 1284221] Re: Shouldn't it be menu bar rather than top bar?

2014-02-25 Thread Kevin Godby
From an IRC conversation that I had with mpt a while back (a year or two
ago, now), we settled on the following definition. I added the
definition and the usage notes to the Ubuntu Manual Style Guide:

The menu bar is the bar along the top of the screen. It contains the
window title, window menus, application status menus, and system status
menus. While it is colloquially referred to as the top bar or the top
panel, it should only be referred to as menu bar in the manual. (Note
that the menu bar used to be a single word, menubar. Menu bar
should now be two words, however.)

If the names of any of these UI elements have changed, I'd like to know.
I'd like to have the manual, system docs, and user interface be
consistent. We should settle on canonical names for these elements and
file bugs against those that deviate from them.

[Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2014-01-14 Thread Kevin Godby
I appreciate the patch, but I don't think this is suitable for the
system documentation. In my view, the system documentation should
document the software as it exists and not provide workarounds for
design decisions.

If the Hibernate menu option appears in the future, I'll happily
document it.

I'm going to mark this bug as invalid for the documentation project. If
the menu option is added in the future, feel free to reopen this bug
against the docs project.

Thanks!

2013-09-02 Thread Kevin Godby
While skimming through the existing list of contributors, I noticed
Contributors to the Ubuntu Documentation Wiki and Authors of the
Official Ubuntu Book. That prompted me to think about what material we
may be using that didn't originate with us but may be licensed such that
we need to provide attribution.

Whether the attribution is provided on this contributors page or
elsewhere is a separate issue/bug, I suppose.

All in all, I'm for deleting the existing contributors page.

[Bug 1169238] Re: [UIFe] BFB icon swirl should run clockwise not anti-clockwise

2013-04-15 Thread Kevin Godby
Here are my final thoughts on this:

Your argument for the UIFe is that people will notice the anticlockwise
background. Your argument as to why we don't need to retake the
screenshots is that no one will notice the anticlockwise background.
This is an obvious contradiction. Will people notice or won't they?

Should we expect a UIFe for the anticlockwise arrows on the Software
Updater, as well? (This isn't a slippery slope fallacy, I'm honestly
asking. Should we be expecting more UIFes for other icons? If so, when
will we have a list?)

As to the timing issue, the ubuntu-docs package (with its screenshots)
needs to be uploaded within hours, not days.

[Bug 1069238] [NEW] The 'Replace the customized configuration file...' window is too small and is not resizable

The 'Replace the customized configuration file...' window is too small

The windows small size makes it quite difficult to read the diff

reading larger diffs.

[Bug 1063453] Re: references to 3rd-party intellectual property need to be displayed with trademark

2012-10-12 Thread Kevin Godby
You're not required to defend others' trademarks. You are under no legal
obligation to accompany trademark names with Ⓡ or ™ (for registered and
unregistered trademarks, respectively). Because the symbols reduce the
readability of the text, I'd recommend avoiding their use.

In addition, while some companies encourage the use of both the proper
and generic term in reference to their products (Google search engine
instead of Google) and discourage turning product names into verbs,
these restrictions are not legally binding.

As long as you use Google to refer to the company or search engine
named Google and not, say, Yahoo or Bing, you shouldn't encounter any
problems.

[Bug 650498] Re: Expansion: 'ẞ' LATIN CAPTIAL LETTER SHARP S (U+1E9E)

2011-01-24 Thread Kevin Godby
Here's a nice summary by Ralf Herrmann of some of the issues surrounding
the capital sharp S that echoes many of the points raised in the
comments above.

  http://opentype.info/blog/2011/01/24/capital-sharp-s/

This blog post also includes a few examples of the capital sharp S in

[Bug 406626] Re: Deleted Items Folder inconsistently named in en_GB localisation

I concur with Vish: for menu items, the determiner 'the' should
typically be omitted. Here's a list of standard menus and menu items:

None of the menu items listed contain determiners.

It appears that there's a patch assigned to GNOME bug #553929:

[Bug 603427] [NEW] Empathy's spell-checker fails to recognize words with inflectional morphemes

2010-07-08 Thread Kevin Godby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Using the English dictionary, I enter the following words into the
conversation window:

  sign signs. strong stronger strongest. sing sings singed singing.

the spell-checker indicates that all the words but 'sign', 'strong', and
'sing' are misspelled. Further testing seems to indicate that the
spell-checker isn't allowing for the following inflectional morpheme
suffixes:

 * plural (-s)
 * comparative (-er)
 * superlative (-est)
 * third-person singular present (-s)
 * past tense (-ed)
 * progressive (-ing)

This is with Empathy version 2.30.2-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

If you require further information, please let me know.

[Bug 596141] [NEW] Searching for drivers and progress bar are in separate windows

2010-06-18 Thread Kevin Godby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

After selecting my network printer from the New Printer dialog and
clicking Forward, the Searching: Searching for drivers window popped
up. Shortly afterward, an additional window popped up saying Searching

[Bug 469499] Re: Usability issue in hard disk failing dialog

2010-03-12 Thread Kevin Godby
I reported this in the GNOME bug tracker and they bounced it back saying
that it's Ubuntu-specific:

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606722

The Cancel and OK buttons appear to have the same effect -- that is,
dismissing the dialog. If they have other effects, the buttons should
be relabeled. Otherwise the Cancel button should be removed.

[Bug 296288] Re: texdoc should use evince and not xpdf

2009-01-06 Thread Kevin Godby
Install the texlive-base and texlive-latex-base-doc packages (along with
its dependencies). Then, at a command prompt, type:

  $ texdoc clsguide

This will report the following error message (assuming xpdf hasn't been
installed):

  sh: xpdf: not found

The expected result is that a PDF document (clsgiude.pdf) will be
located on the system and opened using the PDF viewer.

As a workaround, you can add the following line to your ~/.bashrc file:

  export TEXDOC_VIEWER_PDF=(evince %s)

and then run:

  $ source ~/.bashrc

This will tell texdoc to use evince instead of xpdf as the PDF viewer.
You may have to set similar environment variables (e.g.,
TEXDOC_VIEWER_DVI) for other file types.

[Bug 123848] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in cairo_set_line_width()

2007-07-27 Thread Kevin Godby
Potential fix below.

When I ran 'gnome-appearance-properties' from a terminal, I saw a few
errors like:

   /usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32

To resolve this issue, I added to following two lines:

Option  AddARGBGLXVisuals True
Option  DisableGLXRootClippingTrue

to the Screen section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarted X
Windows (logout of Gnome and at the login screen, press Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace, then login again).

After logging back in again, enabling desktop effects worked.

Some specs:
 - nVidia Go 7600 video card
 - Using the nvidia Xorg driver (not nv)
 - Kernel version: 2.6.22-8-generic
 - compiz package version 1:0.5.1+git20070725-0ubuntu1

[Bug 123848] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in cairo_set_line_width()

2007-07-27 Thread Kevin Godby
I just used the restricted drivers manager to disable and re-enable my
nvidia driver, and it did add those two lines to the xorg.conf file.
Interestingly, though it added the lines to the Device section, whereas
the info I found online suggested I add the lines to the Screen section.
I'm not sure which is correct, but both appear to work.

As to this particular bug, however, I still think it's a valid bug.
Compiz should not segfault -- ever -- for any reason. A better solution
would be to recommend to the user that those two lines should be added
to the xorg.conf file. An ever nicer solution would be to offer to add
the lines to the file so the user doesn't have to.

[Bug 52151] pkgconfig file points to wrong lib filename

2006-07-06 Thread Kevin Godby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libodbc++-dev

The /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libodbc++.pc file suggests that the compiler use
'-lodbc++-mt', but the libodbc++4 package provides the library *without*
multi-threaded support, so the actual library filename is
'libodbc++.so'.

Either the library should be configured with --enable-threads (which
would generate the -mt suffixed lib) or the pkgconfig file needs to drop
the -mt suffix.
