Not sure if I can post here simply through replying to the email address,
but it's worth a shot.

Unfortunately, I had to leave town for a couple of days. I'll try to get the
full log once I'm back.

Sent from phone.

2011-04-25 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Finally, here's the dmesg output after the same procedure, except I
booted with slub_debug.

Jeremy, sorry for mistagging. However, this bug is a regression, since
inserting a device in a usb 3.0 port worked just fine in maverick
meerkat.

On a sidenote: It was a long time ago I was involved in any ubuntu
project, but surely, a hard crash like this which is consistently and
easily triggered, should warrant an importance level higher than medium?

[Bug 757242] [NEW] Kernel panic upon inserting usb 3 device

The kernel panics, consistently, upon inserting a usb 3 hard drive. This
issue wasn't there in previous ubuntu releases (at least not in
maveric). After inserting a usb 3-device, the only thing to do is a hard
reboot.

[Bug 405402] Re: suggestion: do not hardcode the ~/Private path in ecryptfs-setup-private

2009-09-24 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Dustin,

That's actually how I'm doing currently (with Documents/ and couple of
other folders symlinked), and it works just fine. What I was looking
for, however, was the ability to easily create new encrypted folders
from dolphin's/nautilus' context menus; a simple right click and
encrypt this folder. Or, rather, the underlying mechanism to enable me
to easily write such scripts.

Time to file a new wishlist item? ;-)

[Bug 295741] Re: dbus-daemon memory leak

2009-07-29 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
About the leak I saw in Karmic, I couldn't reproduce it with valgrind, so no
evidence from my side.
For what it's worth, dbus' ~800MB memory usage was during Nepomuk's initial
index of my ~53000 files. Subsequent indexes and crawls didn't cause dbus to
fill up my RAM. So maybe it was just caused by a lot of messages, in which case
I apologize for the noise.

[Bug 406167] Re: [karmic] Strigi indexer notifications after suspend/hiberbation

2009-07-29 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
I'm seeing this too and it's extremely annoying. For me, it doesn't
depend on a suspend/resume cycle. I get this on and off all the time. As
I wrote in the upstream bug report, just now I watched a 50 min film
clip with tons of these notifications completely ruining my experience.

I'll attach a patch (and a debdiff) that simply removes two lines from
eventmonitor.cpp in kdebase-runtime. This might not be the most elegant
way to go about, but I can't see how it would hurt. In either case it
does wonders for usability while watching a film :-p

[Bug 295741] Re: dbus-daemon memory leak

2009-07-28 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi

I know this bug is supposed to be fixed, but I'm sure I'm seeing it on Karmic.
dbus-daemon is using ~800MB here. Everything matches what is described in this
thread, so I've decided not to open a new bug.

How can I provide additional useful information about this leak?

[Bug 391774] Re: Simple changes to make the grub menu look more elegant

As far as I understand, Colin Bennet's gfxmenu code

pulls grub from upstream after that commit, this bug would have a
somewhat easy solution.

[Bug 405710] [NEW] [remember the milk] canno t add tasks containing non-ASCII character (å ä ö)

2009-07-28 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi

This is on Karmic with plasma-widgets-addons 4.2.98-0ubuntu1.

When trying to add a task that contains non-ASCII characters, such as 'å', 'ä'

not add the task. Tasks not containing these characters are added instantly.

[Bug 405402] [NEW] suggestion: do not hardcode the ~/Private path in ecryptfs-setup-private

2009-07-27 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

It would be nice if the path ~/Private could be given as an option when
ecryptfs-setup-private is run, instead of being hardcoded. This way,
file managers such as Dolphin and Nautilus could have options in their
context menus to Encrypt this folder.

Does this only affect ecryptfs-setup-private or are changes necessary to

[Bug 404568] [NEW] after update to KDE 4.3 RC3, audio stutters

2009-07-25 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

As the summary says, after updating to the newly released rc3 of KDE 4.3, on
karmic, audio has started to stutter. I couldn't get any sound using the
gstreamer backend, so I've only tried different settings with the xine backend.
I've tried using the pulse setting as well as the alsa setting. The result is
exactly the same; short stutters every 5-7 seconds or so. The reason I believe
this is a phonon bug, rather than a kernel or alsa bug, is that playing audio
files using any non-phonon application works as expected.

By the way, perhaps this is a matter of updating the plasmoids? In

How about creating that symlink during package install, for backwards

For what it's worth, the backlight seems to work as expected in Kubuntu

When it comes to Jaunty, I've completely given up on the intel stack and

I'm happy to have this changed to Fix Released as it works fine under

[Bug 395358] Re: thinkpad fn+f5 regression now toggles wifi and bluetooth at once

2009-07-19 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Steve, sorry for not providing more details. Since I was seeing the
exact same symptoms on my machine, I simply assumed I had the same bug.
Particularly since the kernel part supposedly causing the issue is the
platform independent rfkill module (as per LP #397698).

I'll try to give some more details here, and if you still think I have a
different bug, let me know and I'll just go away.

In jaunty, the state of my bluetooth and wlan device, were controlled by
means of /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/bluetooth, and
/sys/class/net/wlan0/device/rfkill/*/state, respectively. In Karmic,
they're both controlled by means of /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill*/state.

Now, in Jaunty pressing Fn+F2 (which corresponds to Fn+F5 on the
thinkpad) cycles the different possible states of bt+wlan. In Karmic,
however, bt+wlan are turned off simultaneously. What's peculiar is that
when FN+F2 toggles the radio devices to off, the
/sys/class/rfkill/rfkillX that corresponds to the bluetooth device is
removed (leaving me with just one rfkill device), and when it's toggled
back on, the bluetooth-rfkill device comes back but, but this time named
rfkillX+1 (that is rfkill1, becomes rfkill2, next time around rfkill3,
etc.)

All this is being done with acpi-support stopped, which means (if I'm
not misunderstanding anything here), that none of the platform specific
scripts in /etc/acpi/* are run.

Likewise, I can't change the value of /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill*/state
manually.

Shouldn't hal be in charge of hotkeys nowadays, instead of acpi-support?
If I don't misremember this, hal doesn't know how to cycle states, but
rather changes the state of bt+wlan the way described here.

[Bug 395358] Re: thinkpad fn+f5 regression now toggles wifi and bluetooth at once

2009-07-19 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Gah! I just wrote a long explanation for why I believe I'm experiencing the
same bug, but the browser crashed.
So this is just a condensed version of that.

1) The problem seems to be related to rfkill, which is platform independent.
2) stopping acpi-support and acpid, I still have the same problem (i.e. the
hotkey behaves the same as if they were running, which makes me think none of
the platform specific scripts from /etc/acpi/* are run).
3) I can't change the values of /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill*/state manually.

Isn't hal responsible for hotkey handling nowadays? If I don't
misremember, hal can't handle cycling of bt+wlan, but rather behaves
just as explained here, turning bt+wlan either on or off simultaneously.

If you still think I'm having a different bug, let me know, and I'll go
away.

[Bug 385106] [NEW] [GM45] certain xrandr combinations cause crash

2009-06-09 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi

This is done on an up-to-date Kubuntu Karmic.
The hardware is an Asus N20A with an intel g45 chip.

When trying to setup my two screens with xrandr, the X server crashes
and leaves me at the login prompt. I'm not exactly sure which
combinations cause the crash, but definitely a `xrandr --output LVDS
--right-of VGA` does. Possibly other combinations too.

[Bug 385115] [NEW] KDE Display Settings cannot setup dual head extended desktop

2009-06-09 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

This bug report is filed in order to track the upstream bug report:

There is no possibility in the display configuration utility to setup an
extended desktop (e.g. something like `xrandr --output LVDS --left-of VGA`).
This is the case with at least intel hardware. Not sure about other cards.

the funny part is that the position option is there, although greyed-out, for
displays that are disabled.

Here's a screenshot: https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/175461/display-
settings.png

Problem is there on an up-to-date Kubuntu Karmic with KDE 4.3beta2.

[Bug 359955] [NEW] gnome-do crashes with unhandled exception

2009-04-12 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi

[Bug 344709] [NEW] kde 4.2.1 has problems showing certain utf-8 characters

2009-03-18 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

I'm a new KDE user so I'm not sure whether this problem is a regression
or not. I have noticed that every here and there around the desktop,
there are problems showing non-ASCII characters such as ö ä å. At some
places it works fine, such as filenames shown in either dolphin or the
folder view plasmoid. In other places, it doesn't, such as the
taskmanager plasmoid.

Here's a screenshot that shows that shows an example:
https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/175461/kde-and-utf-8.png.
The word in the marked area should read Systeminställningar.

Also, not sure whether this is against kdebase, or some other package.

Forgot to add: This is on an up-to-date Jaunty install.

[Bug 304871] Re: [i845G] Fatal server error: Couldn't bind memory for BO front buffer (Jaunty)

2009-03-11 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Since I'm the guy who suggested we track 2.7, obviously I think 2.6.3 is
a good idea :-p

Seriously, the fixes that have gone into 2.6.3 might not be relevant for
what's gonna be enabled by default in Jaunty, but if things don't
improve, 855GM users are gonna see forum posts that say add accelmethod
UXA to xorg.conf and you'll be fine. Which brings me to my point: with
2.6.3 I have had no server crash on my 855GM with UXA enabled, whereas
on 2.6.1 I had a couple of hard xserver hangs.

So +1 for trying out 2.6.3 :-)

[Bug 330103] [NEW] [jaunty] apt-get source linux-image`-uname -r` does not download sources

2009-02-16 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

During my intrepid days, the following command would download the linux
sources along with everything needed to rebuild a kernel package
locally:

apt-get source linux-image-`uname -r`

That's precisely the behavior I would expect.

[Bug 320874] Re: [asus] /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness has it backwards

2009-02-15 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Note sure if it's a dupe. I'm seeing the problem on Jaunty with a 2.6.28
kernel, so it probably isn't.

One note about this bug: I tried running on kernel 2.6.29-rc4 and with
that kernel the values in
/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness work properly.
That is, the values from 0 to 13 correspond to the backlight where 0 is
lowest possible and 13 is highest possible. However, the userspace tools
didn't work the way they should. Neither xbacklight, gnome-power-
manager, nor the fn-keys worked well. The changed the backlight in what
seemed to be a random manner.

[Bug 304871] Re: [i845G] Fatal server error: Couldn't bind memory for BO front buffer (Jaunty)

2009-02-14 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Perhaps it would make sense to track version 2.7 of the intel driver for
jaunty (which would in effect mean the master branch for now, I guess).
After all, intel releases on a quarterly basis. Last release was in q4
2008, so 2.7 should be released in q1 2009, i.e. in time for the jaunty
release. And I'm sure it'll have a lot of UXA stabilization going in. In
either event, it's hard to imagine 2.7 being less stable and less
performant than 2.6.x :-p

[Bug 326281] [NEW] akonadi crashes straight after login

2009-02-06 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

On a fresh kubuntu alpha-4 installation (although this is true of
alpha-3 as well), akonadi crashes immediately after logging in. I am
presented with a window which seems show results of some sort of a self
test, but choosing save report crashes that window as well, so I have
no logs to attach here. Problem persist after updating all packages
through adept as well.

The best thing I can provide, I guess, is the output of akonadictl
start, which also causes a crash. Here:
http://paste.ubuntu.com:80/114867/

The only changes I made to the default install options are: 1) I'm on an
ext4 filesystem, and 2) I'm using encrypted home (not full encryption,
just the ecryptfs variety that encrypts only home).

LP 280404 is the only other bug I find that mentions an akonadi crash,
but my gut feeling tells me that it's not the same issue.

[Bug 320874] Re: [asus] /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness has it backwards

2009-02-06 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
This bug is particularly important to fix for kubuntu users. In ubuntu,
blacklisting the video module gives a working desktop environment, as
gnome-power-manager apparently handles the backlight by some other
means. The KDE power manager, however, doesn't seem to have this
alternate way of controlling the backlight.

I personally think the importance on this bug should be bumped as it's
1) a regression, and 2) really bad for laptop users wrt power
consumption and battery life. There are reports that the issue indeed is
fixed in 2.6.29, so I backport should be possible.

[Bug 222154] Re: KDE4 Display Settings are not remembered

2009-02-06 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
I am seeing this issue in KDE 4.2 and Jaunty (both alpha-3 and alpha-4,
as well as with the latest updated packages). I am running jaunty on a
real machine, not a VM.

Please let me know where to gather relevant logs. I'm not really a KDE
user (yet), so not familiar where to dig up logs.

[Bug 320813] Re: [drm] compiz animations cause temporary freezes with vblank

2009-02-05 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Timo, I read through that thread on dri-devel, and would like to add,
just for the record, that for me the problem was never related to VT
switching or suspend/resume cycles. The freezes start occuring after a
few minutes of normal usage.

I don't know if this is relevant, but thought I'd mention it.

[Bug 324289] [NEW] celt needs to be updated to 0.5.1

2009-02-02 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Public bug reported:

New upstream release of celt is available [1].
The 0.5.0 has some minor api changes [2]. But brings a few important
improvements, and is recommended as dependency at least for jack.

apt-cache rdepends libcelt0 only shows:
  libcelt-dev
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  celt

(why jack isn't on that list is beyond me, as the dependency clearly is
defined in jack's debian/control. I'll take a look at that.)

The diff attached also adds a debian/watch

celt-0.5.1 + a version of gst-plugins-bad rebuilt against the new celt
package will shortly be available in my ppa at
https://launchpad.net/~khashayar/+archive/ppa.

[Bug 146298] Re: [i965] intel gm965 compiz dual head issues

2009-01-31 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
This patch from upstream [1], commited 4 hours ago, is very similar to
the one in comment 16. It's supposed to bump the texture limit on i965
to 4kx4k. I'm about to test it in a minute on Jaunty, where it's the
only change required to solve this issue. If it works, I suggest it
should be cherry picked and applied on Jaunty's mesa.
