[Bug 1977667] Re: package nginx-core 1.18.0-6ubuntu14.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed nginx-core package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2022-06-06 Thread Kip Warner
Thanks Simon. Yes, the nginx package probably failed to upgrade because
the service didn't start. And it didn't start because of a missing
certificate:

-- Boot 0baea423fe7d453f9d1f6091bc398839 --
Starting A high performance web server and a reverse proxy server...
nginx: [emerg] cannot load certificate "/etc/ssl/certs/heliosd.crt":
BIO_new_file() failed (SSL: error:8002:system library::No such file or
directory:calling fopen(/etc/ssl/certs/heliosd.crt, r) error:1080:BIO rou>
nginx: configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed
nginx.service: Control process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
nginx.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
Failed to start A high performance web server and a reverse proxy server.

But as I mentioned previously, that should not have crashed the
installer. And to be clear, by installer I'm not talking about the nginx
package maintainer scripts, but during upgrade from Impish to Jammy via
do-release-upgrade(8). Sorry if that wasn't clear before.

Unfortunately I think the log is gone now because I "completed" the
installation, made sure all packages completed installation with `sudo
dpkg --configure -a` and then rebooted. So what we've got above is all
we've got.

Not quite. It's true that the certificates nginx was looking for weren't
present, but that should not have crashed the installer.

The gcc-11 source package produces libgcc-s1 and (I think?) libstdc++6.
Both of these binary packages on Hirsute depend on libtbb2 version

generated warnings whenever is included.

[Bug 362427] Re: Public key ssh auth doesn't work with my Encrypted Home Directory

2019-01-19 Thread Kip Warner
This looks like this is a problem that affects many but that there
doesn't appear to be any viable solution to. It seems as though the best
we can hope for is to configure sshd to look for the authorized_keys
outside the home directory while it is still unmounted, but all that
does is login to the machine but still leave the home directory
unmounted.

I think likely the only way to solve this was if upstream patched
ecryptfs to some how allow SSH key authentication. I don't know how
difficult that would be to do.

Hey Yuri,

Yes, working with a PPA (sbuild) can be a real pain. I've learned over
the years how to do it. All of the things you raised are definitely
annoying, but there's actually very good reasons for all of them that
make packages better. This is the reason why Debian has such a very high
quality selection of packages because of their high standards. I really
recommend checking out the Debian Policy Manual at some point for future
benefit too.

Hey Yuri. Thanks a lot. It might be better though if you consider
pushing to a PPA. That's a more "standard" method of distributing
personal / testing debs.

This isn't really what they're getting at, or maybe I am only speaking
for myself. That hardware database isn't a collection of hardware
statistics of Ubuntu users which is useful for developers making design
choices.

I didn't suggest resurrecting the old one. I suggested how to go about
building a new one.

[Bug 30910] Re: Hardware Database not browseable

2017-11-27 Thread Kip Warner
I agree with the concerns of some of those above. If the hardware
database is no longer maintained, closing the bug as a wishlist is less
than ideal because it doesn't actually address the OP's original
concern.

It would be better if there was a hardware database Canonical
maintained. This can't be rocket science to build:

* Ubiquity installer makes some queries to the system with the user's
permission.
* Installer makes some JSON POST requests to remote server.
* Remote server stores anonymous hardware description in a MySQL or PostgreSQL
database.
* Database has a web based front end that shows some pies, tables, a field for
queries, etc.

This can probably be put together in a few days.

[Bug 1480740] Re: Thunar causes kernel hard lock

2015-09-12 Thread Kip Warner
Hey Christopher. Thank you very much for your help. Funny enough, I did
update the BIOS firmware a few days ago at the same time I upgraded to
Wily. Whichever it was, the hard lock seems to have disappeared.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2501
06/24/2015

Would you like me to still report this as Confirmed?

[Bug 1481177] Re: Kernel hard lock upon removing mounted SD card

2015-08-04 Thread Kip Warner
Hey Joseph. It's been happening for a while now with at least half a
dozen or so kernel upgrades. I waited until now to submit the bug report
because it was tricky getting the debug logs.

I'm going to guess and say it's probably something to do with the way
card was unmounted, but I can't be sure.

Would you like me to try with the latest upstream kernel anyways?

Hey Joseph. It's been happening for a while now with at least half a

because it was tricky getting the debug logs.

I'm going to guess and say it's probably still an issue with the latest
upstream, and further guess that that's probably because the issue may
not be in the kernel itself, but in X / vga kernel module.

Would you like me to try with the latest upstream kernel anyways?

[Bug 1379702] Re: xfsettingsd crashes after disconnecting external screen

2015-01-18 Thread Kip Warner
I also just experienced a similar crash. When I turned off my second LCD
connected via DVI:

The program 'xfsettingsd' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRRCrtc (invalid Crtc parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 2320 error_code 148 request_code 140 minor_code 21)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 1125442] Re: Always Visible and On Top Windows Steal Focus on Workspace Switch

2014-06-12 Thread Kip Warner
Unfortunately it looks like upstream has not expressed any interest in
supporting a feature to deal with this situation, so unfortunately I
don't think it's something we will be able to either. Supporting a
separate fork of Compiz is not really something we have the resources
for right now.

[Bug 1315098] [NEW] GUI for managing ACL

2014-05-01 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

Problem:
Some people may need to have a GUI to manage the file system's access
control list. Unfortunately it seems that the existing projects do not take
into consideration a very large user-base. When you attempt to locate or search
for a particular user, most projects will only provide a simple list of users
with no filtering tools, this can quickly become unsustainable if the user-base
is higher then 100 users.

Steps to Reproduce:
 1. Setup a ldap with more then 100 users
 2. Configure a system to authenticate using ldap
 3. Setup ACL on one of the filesystems
4 Lunch Eiciel and try to find a particular user in the list

Actual Results:
Not only is it very hard to find a user if you have a user base of lets say
120 000 users, but it also seems that Eiciel only list the first 100 users

Expected Results:
Eiciel should scale better with large user bases and provide convenient
ways to filter and / or search for users. If this is a limitation in the
backend, such as OpenLDAP, then the problem may need to be fixed there. If it
cannot be fixed in the backend, then Eiciel could possibly be modified to
perform multiple queries in a background thread to fetch the complete pool.

Known Workaround:
The only knows work around is to use the command line. This is cumbersome
for some users.

** Affects: eiciel (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1214721] [NEW] More appropriate XDG menu category for bitcoin-qt

2013-08-20 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

Currently the bitcoin-qt application's XDG desktop integration on some
desktop environments requests that it be placed under the Office menu
category.[1] This is a rather broad category and I would like to suggest
that this be refined further into Finance, given that XDG's menu
specification allows for this.[2]

I believe the line in question in bitcoin-qt.desktop should be as
follows:

Categories=Office;Finance;

[Bug 1208285] [NEW] Official Ubuntu ISO should use isomd5sum for embedded checksum

2013-08-04 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu ISO and official derivatives could contain embedded MD5
checksums at the iso9660 metadata layer by using isomd5sum tools to
implant and check the checksum. This may be faster than checking each
package at the file system level because the verification process when
done at the block level is a single linear seek without having to jump
around. The checksum can even be verified after the image has been
burned and mounted.

From the tool's README:

isomd5sum provides a way of making use of the ISO9660 application data
area to store md5sum data about the iso. This allows you to check the
iso given nothing more than the iso itself.

[Bug 1178826] Re: spamassassin broken error control on bad UNIX socket parameter

2013-06-19 Thread Kip Warner
Hey Marc. Sadly I haven't had time to properly prepare the merge request
as Dmitry had requested. It's up to you if you'd like to merge it or
not. The patch merely addresses a symptom of larger architectural
problem which cannot be fixed without a major overhaul. Namely, a
migration to a DBus system and session service interfaces for MUAs so
that they need not rely on cumbersome, problematic, and archaic
searching for running processes, using direct UNIX sockets, unreliable
getopt interfaces, etc.

[Bug 1190068] [NEW] apport cannot handle unpackaged applications running from /media

Currently Apport works very well at handling crashes with packaged

[Bug 1055866] Re: Combine all official derivatives differing only in default desktop environment to single distribution

2013-05-29 Thread Kip Warner
Dmitrijs, you are missing the point. The point was not that everyone
should be using the same thing, but that we can reduce the number of
discs for a specific architecture the general public handles to a single
one, while preserving freedom of choice. Available space for the
necessary packages on the storage medium is not an issue anymore, now
that we are no longer limited to a 700 MB compact disc.

** Summary changed:

- Combine all official derivatives differing only in default desktop
environment to single distribution
+ Coalesce some official derivatives to single while preserving freedom of
desktop choice

[Bug 1178826] [NEW] Evolution spamassassin integration not working 13.04

2013-05-10 Thread Kip Warner
Public bug reported:

For each attempt to scan an email for junk via spamassassin, the following is
noted in /var/log/mail.err:
spamc[7611]: connect(AF_UNIX) to spamd failed: Connection refused

I am using evolution 3.6.4.

My SpamAssassin appears to be configured correctly from what I can see
as well:

$ cat /etc/default/spamassassin
# /etc/default/spamassassin
# Duncan Findlay

# WARNING: please read README.spamd before using.
# There may be security risks.

# Change to one to enable spamd
ENABLED=1

# Options
# See man spamd for possible options. The -d option is automatically added.

# SpamAssassin uses a preforking model, so be careful! You need to
# make sure --max-children is not set to anything higher than 5,
# unless you know what you're doing.

OPTIONS=--create-prefs --max-children 5 --helper-home-dir

# Pid file
# Where should spamd write its PID to file? If you use the -u or
# --username option above, this needs to be writable by that user.
# Otherwise, the init script will not be able to shut spamd down.
PIDFILE=/var/run/spamd.pid

# Set nice level of spamd
#NICE=--nicelevel 15

# Cronjob
# Set to anything but 0 to enable the cron job to automatically update
# spamassassin's rules on a nightly basis
CRON=1

The process appears to be running as well:

$ ps aux | grep spam

This was working fine in 12.04, but stopped working upon a fresh install

[Bug 30910] Re: Hardware Database not browseable

2013-04-10 Thread Kip Warner
Hey Jeff. Great response and thanks. As I mentioned, my main concern
now, and I can't speak for everyone else with issues with the hw
database, is not knowing what is the most common hardware used by Ubuntu
users. I'm less concerned with whether this motherboard or that video
card is certified to work with it.

If I had more time and wasn't working on this new Ubuntu game title full
time, I would definitely take your recommendation and follow up with the
suggested people.

Hey Jeff. It might help some people, but unfortunately not in my case. I
don't need a hardware database of Ubuntu compatible hardware at present.
What I need as an Ubuntu game developer is to see statistics on the most
common hardware that is being used (e.g. GPU, CPU, etc.).
