Sorry for bumping the issue but how can I help to help resolve the issue
as I'm close to abandoning the system as is, having to reboot it about
15 times per day.

I would also offer $300 in bitcoin for a substantial contribution
(workaround, insight that helps fix the issue, help to further debug to
get it fixed eventually) if it helps resolve my issue by Christmas.

The most annoying part about this bug is that it leaves the user
guessing what's going on. I did not know if it is an issue with local or
remote system. Speculating that deleting excluded folders might be
triggering the issue etc.

[Bug 479826] Re: gnome-panel consuming 100% of CPU and driving up memory

This bug is still open so I assume it's here to post:
Today I had a 100% (out of 400%) CPU consumption by a process called 
gnome-panel. Apart from the laptop turning loud I did not notice any issues and 
killing it resulted in it going quiet again.

So for now the issue is not reproducible for me but annoying especially
when on battery.
