[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2016-05-02 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Update: I spoke too soon. After another reboot I just get endless i915
crashes and X dialogs telling me I'm in low graphics mode - so only text
mode for me. Various attempts to purge and reinstall Nvidia/Bumblebee
failed, probably because this seems to be an Intel problem.

I'm attempting to upgrade to 16.04 in the hopes that a 4.4 kernel will
work.

[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2016-05-01 Thread Leslie Viljoen
After upgrading my Asus laptop to Ubuntu 15.10 I got dumped to black
screen with a flashing cursor.

To fix this I had to:
1. run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" to finish installing packages that were
already downloaded
2. run "sudo apt-get install --reinstall resolvconf" - because apt told me
resolvconf was broken
3. run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" (and pick lightdm again) and then reboot
(to get a graphical desktop back)
4. edit /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf and change KernelDriver, LibraryPath and
XorgModulePath to point to the newer NVidia driver Ubuntu had installed, then
reboot (to get bumblebee's primusrun command working again)

Not the greatest upgrade experience but its all working now.

Of course don't do the above unless you read a little and know what
these do, or have reason to believe that these will solve problems you
actually have. I'm sharing the list of things in case they give you some
hints to solving similar problems.

My specs: Asus X550L laptop, NVidia GeForce 840M graphics.

Sorry, this was reported over 7 years ago, I doubt it has any relevance
any more. My old Mac Mini is long since packed away and probably too
slow to be worth using with today's software. Thanks for taking a look
though.

Should I close this bug report or something?

[Bug 1269232] Re: NVIDIA Corporation GK208M [GeForce GT 730M] [10de:1290] does not supported

2014-06-20 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I have a similar card ( GK208M [GeForce GT 740M] and a similar problem.
I could not install the proprietary driver automatically. I am running
Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome.

I solved it by installing something called Bumblebee, following these
instructions:
http://www.themukt.com/2014/06/13/howto-install-nvidia-331-bumblebee-optimus-cards-ubuntu

I had to apt-get install virtualgl to run the tests at the end.
Also, the package nvidia-settings-331 seems to have gone away so I didn't
install it.

There's some Ubuntu docs on this here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

Basically it uses the NVidia card to render things that are displayed by
the Intel card.

@flm The only other issue I've had is with Intel wifi which I mostly
mitigate by disabling N-mode. See my comment at

I've not had the i965 problem probably because my display driver is an

[Bug 994104] Re: Wireless performance issues on kernel 3.4.0-1-generic (iwlwifi)

2012-10-02 Thread Leslie Viljoen
This bug makes daily work a real pain - my wifi is constantly going down
and I have to press the hardware kill switch twice to get it back up
again.

As a work-around, based on the upstream report, I have been running a
script to force the adapter into (slower) g-mode:

sudo rmmod iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

This script sometimes causes a complete kernel crash, so I have not made
it run by default, though it has not caused a crash so far when I run it
manually soon after bootup. Perhaps it causes the crash after the
adapter has gone through one of its failure cycles?

After the adapter is in g mode I do still get wifi disconnects but they
are in the order of less than once a day, so I can at least get some
work done.

Timo, your -90 kernel has fully solved the lock up caused by the
glxgears script above. I still have hard lock-ups once every two weeks
or so but like you say, the cause of that is probably something else
entirely. Its very hard to determine causes when there's no evidence to
examine afterwards!

2012-06-20 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I want to confirm that the kernel in comment #38 solved the almost daily
lock ups for me too (sorry to me too).

The linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic kernel in the precise-proposed software
source did NOT fix it.

For anyone looking for a solution and needing to work right now:
1. The problem is frequent complete system freezes with Ivy Bridge (see the
output of lspci to confirm Ivy Bridge)
2. Download the file in comment #38 and install it (double-click the .deb that
you downloaded to get that option)

[Bug 353495] Re: (K)ubuntu fails to install GRUB on Amilo Si 3655 notebook

The work-around above fails in Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) because the grub

work-around:

After a lot of searching I have been unable to determine whether this is
a bug in grub or a problem with the Amilo BIOS having some kind of
affection for the Windows boot loader. Any insight would be appreciated
- its such a shame to fail at the finish line after everything else on
the laptop works perfectly out of the box.

[Bug 53709] Re: Exclude webcollage from the xscreensaver packages

PLEASE can this screen saver be packaged separately?

Since this screen saver is a part of a huge list, and they are all
together, a person has to choose between have none and install them
all and then spend time researching how to remove one. This is
unreasonable.

[Bug 467785] Re: suspend hangs in Karmic Koala

2010-03-07 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Since my last comment I have not seen this hanging problem once in four
months on my HP 6730b. I suspend at least once a day. I can only guess
it was a fluke or that it has been fixed for me since then.

[Bug 467785] Re: suspend hangs in Karmic Koala

2009-11-25 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I definitely had no SD card in my reader when this happened to me, but I
can also say that it has not happened again yet. I suspend between 2 and
4 times per day, so for me it seems to be a very rare problem.

[Bug 352228] Re: Intel Wireless 5300 AGN: iwlagn: No space for Tx

2009-11-25 Thread Leslie Viljoen
This happened again to me tonight and sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager
restart fixed it again. I am attaching my syslog, showing the errors
and a gap (in which I restarted network manager) and the messages
immediately following the restart, which may help someone solve this
problem.

[Bug 352228] Re: Intel Wireless 5300 AGN: iwlagn: No space for Tx

2009-11-25 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Looks like upstream has fixed this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=493018

This comment http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1239871 indicates
that the driver
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Where_to_download_bleeding_edge
may solve this problem, but I haven't confirmed. Since it doesn't happen
to me very often I may just wait for the changes to filter through.

Still happening to me (perhaps once a day) with kernel 2.6.31-14-generic, and
not the hardware switch.
Network manager 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1.

Wireless card:
PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection

Perhaps this is an interaction between iwlagn and network-manager.

2009-10-22 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Tracey: is this with Ubuntu 9.04? Does Hardware Drivers show anything?
I will attach lshw -C network, in case that helps.

My steps were:
1. Install Ubuntu 9.04 i386 Desktop
(even the live CD had working wireless, Hardware Drivers indicatingBroadcom
STA wireless driver)
2. Apply all upgrades

I then rebooted into kernel 2.6.28-16 without any change to working
wireless.

[Bug 203819] Re: Broadcom bcm4312 wireless not detected at all

2009-10-14 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Wooh! I got the wireless working! I used Kernel 2.6.32-999-generic
and had to download firmware.

Here are the steps:

1. First connect the computer to the Internet with a cable (this is the easiest
way)
2. Go here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds
3. You will likely be pointed here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current
4. Get the current kernel (I used
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-image-2.6.32-999-generic_2.6.32-999.200910141000_i386.deb)
5. Install it: sudo dpkg -i
linux-image-2.6.32-999-generic_2.6.32-999.200910141000_i386.deb

Now reboot and after startup, if you run dmesg you'll probably see Cannot find
firmware file b43/ucode15.fw
1. The message will point you to
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#device_firmware
2. Scroll down to You are using the b43 driver with an LP-PHY card (e.g.
BCM4312)
3. Before you follow the instructions you'll need git: sudo apt-get install
git-core
4. Now become root: sudo -i
5. Paste in the two sets of instructions - they will git clone the fwcutter
and then download and install the firmware

After that, reboot and you should be all set!

Not working at all in Karmic Beta with kernel 2.6.31-11. No sign of the
wireless card in iwconfig/ifconfig.
lcpci says BCM4312 rev 01.

The link above for a work-around no longer seems to work.

[Bug 203819] Re: Broadcom bcm4312 wireless not detected at all

2009-10-09 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Followed steps here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Feisty_No-Fluff#Step
2b: sp33008 Driver Download/Extraction
They did not seem to work - the still no device in ifconfig/iwconfig, even
though the modules seem to be loaded.

lshw -C network says:
configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0

Is there a work-around I can use? Is there anything I can do to help get
this working in Karmic before the release?!

[Bug 297842] Re: Thunar segfaults on powerpc (rebuild needed)

2008-11-27 Thread Leslie Viljoen
XfDesktop crashed reliably for me when I right-clicked on an FLV file on
my desktop. Perhaps it was trying to display properties that don't exist
for all desktop icons, such as the open with section at the top.

You should be able to duplicate that behaviour like so:

1. go to a terminal
2. killall xfdesktop
3. xfdesktop
4. touch ~/Desktop/tmp.flv
5. right-click on the flv file

Unfortunately I can't test this anymore because I installed Lenny, which
doesn't have this problem.
Lenny has the radeon/SDL crashing problem in common with Intrepid, and I have
been working
hard on that for a few days now!

[Bug 301278] [NEW] All SDL apps crash in DirectFB on PPC

2008-11-23 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Public bug reported:

This problem's first symptom is that you are completely logged out of
your X session as soon as you try to run something like Tuxpaint on PPC.
I have seen it on Fedora, Debian Lenny and Intrepid. Etch worked fine,
probably because directfb was version 0.9.

I have stepped though Tuxpaint until an SDL init:

SDL_Init(1048625)
(Those flags are: SDL_INIT_VIDEO | SDL_INIT_TIMER | SDL_INIT_AUDO |
SDL_INIT_NOPARACHUTE)

I then stepped through the SDL code until here:
DirectFB_CreateDevice (devindex=value optimized out) at
../../src/video/directfb/SDL_DirectFB_video.c:123

DirectFB_CreateDevice crashes. It sometimes prints the error below, but mostly
it doesn't print anything, it just terminates the session. Since it looks
permissions related I have
run everything as root but that doesn't help.

[Bug 297842] Re: Thunar segfaults on powerpc (rebuild needed)

2008-11-19 Thread Leslie Viljoen
** Description changed:

Thunar segfaults immediately when run on a G4 (PowerPC) Mac Mini.
xfdesktop crashes almost as quickly (I had to click on a desktop icon).

Here's my adventures with this bug:
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=977120

I did an apt-get source in order to debug the problem but found that
after I'd rebuilt Thunar with dpkg-buildpackage, it worked fine. I then
rebuilt xfdesktop4 with the same results.

I eventually built working packages for everyone:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6163764postcount=21
...but it would be better if these packages were just rebuilt and distributed
via apt-get upgrade.

I have tried comparing the working and non-working binaries and it looks
to me like there might have been an incorrect version of a library when
they were built - possibly libglib. See my comments in the forum about
it - it may be a good idea to discover what happened because perhaps
other packages should also be rebuilt.
+
+ ---
+ SRU requirements
+
+ Impact of this bug: the primary file manager for Xubuntu cannot be run
+ and Xubuntu's desktop manager also crashes frequently.
+
+ Fix: no source changes, just a package rebuild. Since I can't see what
+ libraries are in use on the build machine, I can't say what went wrong.
+ I am happy to test any new package builds before they are released, or
+ to assist in comparing the official build environment to mine.
+
+ I rebuilt the packages with an installed Xubuntu system like so:
+ 1. sudo apt-get build-dep thunar
+ 2. apt-get source thunar
+ 3. cd thunar-0.9.0
+ 4. debuild -b
+
+ Patch: not required.
+
+ Regression potential: none.
+
+ Detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug. These should allow
+ someone who is not familiar with the affected package to reproduce the
+ bug and verify that the updated package fixes the problem. You can use
+ this template:
+
+ TEST CASE
+
+ PROCEDURE:
+ 1. install Xubuntu
+ 2. click on the places icon on the panel
+
+ or (in Ubuntu)
+ 1. install Thunar
+ 2. run Thunar
+
+ RESULT ON PASS:
+ Thunar runs without a segmentation fault
+
+ RESULT ON FAIL:
+ Thunar crashes immediately with a segmentation fault.

[Bug 83733] Re: Save buttons not working

2008-11-17 Thread Leslie Viljoen
This problem is reported upstream here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449087

It has not been solved yet, even in the new release that has been
packaged for Jaunty.

[Bug 297842] Re: Thunar segfaults on powerpc (rebuild needed)

2008-11-16 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I'd be happy to check the Jaunty packages, where can I get them?
I tried the package search, but obviously that's not for PPC.

2008-11-16 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Oh, I downloaded them but they won't install under Intrepid because of
dependencies on a newer libpcre3. I assume you meant to try a full
Jaunty install then, which I can't do right away.

This problem does not seem to exist in Intrepid. Perhaps this bug should
be closed?

Fixed packages uploaded for xfdesktop too:

This solves the desktop icons disappearing problem.

[Bug 297842] [NEW] Thunar segfaults on powerpc

2008-11-13 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Public bug reported:

[Bug 152913] Re: Meld syntax highlighting does not work

2007-12-14 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Same version works for me, comparing C++ and Ruby files. Perhaps it
would be useful if you mentioned what your file types and file names
are. Meld does not syntax highlight my C++ files if they are called
*.bak, but I think that's fair.

[Bug 152913] Re: Meld syntax highlighting does not work

2007-12-14 Thread Leslie Viljoen
The hash causes syntax errors:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/lib/meld/task.py, line 131, in iteration
ret = task()
  File /usr/lib/meld/filediff.py, line 671, in _set_files_internal
set_highlighting_enabled( self.textview[i].get_buffer(), files[i],
self.prefs.use_syntax_highlighting )
  File /usr/lib/meld/filediff.py, line 51, in set_highlighting_enabled
mime_type = gnomevfs.get_mime_type( os.path.abspath(fname) )
RuntimeError: there was an error reading the file

At the command line the brackets also need to be escaped but I don't
think that is your problem when meld is called from perforce. The hash
is most likely the problem.

And since it looks like the hash is indicating a version number, you are
stuck.

Looks like a bug in the function gnomevfs.get_mime_type to me.

[Bug 136435] Re: smc - Secret Maryo Chronicles - unmet dependency in Gutsy

2007-12-05 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Ok, I have written a script that should detect simple environmental
regressions - as in this bug. I will upload, and hopefully someone will
at least give it a try with the next Ubuntu release before it goes out.
The script requires Ruby, wajig and apt-file to be installed. Apt-file
must be updated, which may require removal of the Ubuntu CD-Rom apt
source.

Unfortunately the script also requires a tiny fix in wajig, as mentioned here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/wajig/+bug/174261

[Bug 110838] Re: Oolite runs very slowly

2007-12-04 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I have confirmed this problem on Gutsy. glxinfo indicated direct
rendering is enabled, and I do indeed have high-speed 3D in Tremulous
and Warsow.

The problem is quite obvious when leaving the first station, if the
'down' key is held to loop around, the station is rendered at around one
frame per second.

This is with a Intel 945 card, using the 'intel' driver, but I doubt
that's relevant. I cannot confirm on my PPC machine since it seems
oolite is not in the repos for that architecture.

[Bug 136435] Re: smc - Secret Maryo Chronicles - unmet dependency in Gutsy

2007-12-04 Thread Leslie Viljoen
I have almost completed the script to run basic regression tests. We'd
just need a test machine with a big pipe to the full Ubuntu repository
and it could at least verify that the packages with menu entries are
startable in each new distribution release. ie. it would catch the above
bug.

[Bug 136435] Re: smc - Secret Maryo Chronicles - unmet dependency in Gutsy

2007-12-01 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Surely we need a regression testing system that can pick up bugs like
this?

Perhaps a script could install from a collection of packages and run
each associated executable, expecting the program to remain running for
a certain amount of time. Programs which require interaction should not
ordinarily exit immediately, so you could detect if something has gone
wrong.

Another way would be to get a list of /usr/lib/* from apt-file for Breezy and
compare that to /usr/lib/* for Gutsy.
That's potentially a quick list of libraries that might have fallen off the
bus. Of course, apt-file itself fell off the bus in Gutsy since there's no
Contents.i386 file on the CDROM.

[Bug 162898] package libsdl1.2-dev missing sdl.pc

[Bug 110838] Oolite runs very slowly

2007-04-28 Thread Leslie Viljoen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oolite

My uname -a:
Linux lesliev-inspiron 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux

From GLXINFO:
OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20061017 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 6.5.2

It seems Oolite is using software rendering, it runs very quickly on the
same machine under Windows XP.

Oolite's terminal log shows:
OPENGL_DEBUG GL_ERROR (1280) 'invalid enumerant' in: Universe before doing
anything

...but according to other forums this is normal.
