+1 on an ETA for 14.04
openssh 6.6p1-2ubuntu2.8 on trusty seems to be affected by this or a similar
issue as well.

As the system does not freeze while running at least one VM, this might
be related to CPU power states / CPU sleep states.

2013-04-12 Thread Linus van Geuns
Situation is still the same with the current 12.04 kernel
(3.5.0-27.46~precise1):
With at least one VM (KVM) running, the system does not freeze, but the aport
GUI still pops up a few times a day.
Without any VM running, the system sometimes freezes completely..

Well, in the meantime I did create a new bug report for the freezes with
xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal and Intel Sandy Bridge on Ubuntu 12.04:
#1161088

I did re-use this bug as those Sandy Bridge i915 drm hangs system
freezes do feel pretty similar to this bug and there was just about the
same bug on Ubuntu 11.10...

[Bug 1161088] [NEW] Computer freezes shortly (GUI) and sometimes freezes completely

2013-03-27 Thread Linus van Geuns
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 on a Dell Latitude E6520 with Intel Sandy
Bridge CPU/GPU (no additional GPU).

The issue was not present on 11.10 and it started appearing only a few days ago
on 12.04.
So, until a few days ago, Ubuntu 12.04 was fine as well.

The computer freezes (Unity GUI) for a few seconds, no reaction to any
keyboard input, the cursor still moves, but no reaction on any mouse
buttons. Most of the time, the system recovers and continues to work as
before, sometimes it did freeze completely and required a hard reboot
(power off and on again).

If the system recovers, the following dmesg entries can be observed:
[..]
[ 4351.356564] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU
hung
[ 4351.356573] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in
/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
[ 4351.365648] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4357.514587] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU

[ 4357.514815] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4647.526356] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU

[ 4647.526600] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4673.674039] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU
hung
[ 4673.674289] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[..]

Also, in case the system recovers, apport (GUI) pops up multiple times,
but never opens a browser window to actually file the bug. Using apport-
cli did work.

Regards, Linus

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-25 Thread Linus van Geuns
I am using 12.04 x86_64 and since a few days, my Ubuntu informs me about
problems, which seem to relate to xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal.
Sometimes, the whole computer (GUI hangs, no reaction on mouse/keyboard, can't
switch to the terminal) hangs for several seconds. A few minutes ago, the
machine completely froze and needed a hard reset.

May this be the same issue or is it a new one with the lts-quantal backport?
What info do you need?

2011-08-17 Thread Linus van Geuns
I am geting semaphore errors, too.

Setup:
- internal disk SATA
- external disk eSATA
- GPT - LVM - LUKS (cryptsetup)

When creating logical volumes, I get:
The link /dev/ext0/exttest2 should had been created by udev but it was not
found. Falling back to direct link creation.
When removing logical volumes, I get semaphore errors.
When doing luksOpen/luksClose on existing LVMs, I get semaphore errors.

I will attach package setup information and output of lvcreate -

[Bug 827531] [NEW] intel sandy bridge: X session sometimes unrecoverable after screensaver/display powersafe

2011-08-16 Thread Linus van Geuns
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.04 x86_64 on a brand new Dell Latitude E6520 with Intel Sandy Bridge
integrated GPU.
Sometimes when the screeensaver blanked my screen, the X session wont recover
completely:
- Screen reactivates and shows the cursor on a black screen
- nothing happens (waited some minutes)
- switching to consoles is posssible
- when switching back from console to X, mouse pointer shows on top of the
consoles frame buffer
- service gdm restarts works (until next display blank)
- did not happen on AC power, yet
- there are i915 hangcheck timer warnings from time to time

Apart from that, I had 2 complete system freezes (X screen freezes, no
switch to console, no access via SSH, no ping, ..) within about 2 weeks.

Ah, and I am running virtual machines with KVM and virt-manager almost
every day.

[Bug 563895] Re: grub2 fails to boot or install when an LVM snapshot exists

2011-05-09 Thread Linus van Geuns
Upgraded from maverick to natty and had a similar issue:
- bootfs is ext3, rootfs ext4
- both are logical volumes on top of raid1
- did snapshots of root boot before upgrade and it worked for the first reboot

After that, grub2 just booted the menu entry, did a lot of hdd access
and stoped w/o any errors or messages.

I could get the kernel initramfs loaded by striping the menu entry down to:
insmod part_msdos, raid, lvm, ext2
root (vg-device)
kernel...
initramfs...

but mounting the rootfs failed within initramfs and it dropped to a shell.
mounting the logical volume (roots) within that shell worked.

changing the filesystem UUIDs within my snapshots of rootfs boot didnt
change anything.

after deleting both snapshots, grub2 initramfs booted w/o any error.

[Bug 650525] Re: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/Release ; missing key

2010-12-01 Thread Linus van Geuns
Well, it's not that surprising that importing a missing key manually
will fix warning messages about the missing key. :-)

Does this mean, ubuntu-extras-keyring will ship the singing key soon?

I dont know the procedures and details of Ubuntu extras, but every
archive/package signing key used in that repository should be shipped
via the keyring package _before_ it is being used for signatures, aint
it?

[Bug 650525] Re: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/Release ; missing key

2010-11-27 Thread Linus van Geuns
I upgraded my desktop (amd64) from 10.04 lucid to 10.10 maverick today:
aptitude update
[..]
[..]
Fetched 2,959B in 1s (1,507B/s)
W: GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com maverick Release: The following
signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:
NO_PUBKEY DB141E2302FDF932

dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-extras-keyring
aptitude reinstall ubuntu-extras-keyring

didnt do the trick.

[Bug 658205] [NEW] update-manager overwrites sources.list on dist-upgrade without user confirmation

2010-10-11 Thread Linus van Geuns
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When using a custom sources.list (like with local mirrors) update-manager asks,
whether it should automatically rewrite your sources.list.
When answering No, update-manager writes its default sources.list anyways.

Additionally it seems to do an update of the local package database/ package
keys, too.
This results in:
ubuntu-bug -f update-manager
claiming that update-manager is not a genuine ubuntu package.

ProblemType: Bug
