[Bug 1590892] Re: package util-linux 2.27.1-6ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
OK I give up. I keep getting multiple requests to upgrade both the system and apps, but all of them fail. I'm fed up with typing my password four or more times a day. The software centre refuses to open, and attempting to install anything using Synaptic or the terminal also fail. Seriously, if this is your idea of a stable OS, then for me it's a fail. [Bug 554877] Re: gimps crashes in file open dialog
I filed the bug against Karmic, not Lucid. I just tried to reproduce it on Lucid, and now gimp runs fine with ttf-sil-doulos/ttf-sazanami-gothic installed. Presumably whatever bug I was seeing was fixed upstream in pango between Karmic and Lucid. I'm running xubuntu, so I can't test Dmitri's report. -- gimps crashes in file open dialog https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554877 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 573445] [NEW] libgraphite caused all gtk+ and kde apps to segfault after upgrading karmic to lucid
Public bug reported: After upgrading karmic to lucid, I booted into a gdm screen with no login controls. I was able to switch virtual terminals, and exchanged gdm for xdm, which allowed me to log in graphically. However, all gtk+ apps would segfault on run, which left me with no window manager, panels, menus, or anything else. I tried installing kubuntu-desktop, only to find that all kde apps were dying exactly the same way. Most of the time, there was no dmesg or X log messages which said how everything was crashing, but one time I saw it logged in dmesg. All the segfaults were in libgraphite, from window manager to applications. I removed pango-graphite via aptitude, and suddenly everything started working again. [Bug 554877] Re: gimps crashes in file open dialog
I thought about the backtrace, and wondered if some weird font was causing issues. So I removed some of the more exotic ttf fonts, and the problem went away. Notice how the font system complained until I removed the last two fonts, which makes me think this is a pango bug relating to not having a CIDSupplement for a particular font. I'm going to leave the bug open, since pango shouldn't crash no matter what font I have installed, but it should probably be reclassified. xol...@xocotl:~/Desktop$ sudo apt-get remove ttf-devanagari-fonts ttf-kacst ttf-lao ttf-punjabi-fonts ttf-sazanami-gothic ttf-sazanami-mincho ttf-sil-andika ttf-sil-doulos ttf-unfonts-core ttf-wqy-zenhei Reading package lists... [Bug 554877] [NEW] gimps crashes in file open dialog
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gimp Gimp crashes every time I try to open a file on Karmic. I installed gimp-dbg, so hopefully ubuntu-bug was able to get good data from the backtrace. If not, I can add a manual backtrace and core. I'm not entirely sure when this started, since I seldom need to run gimp. I know I have run gimp successfully after upgrading Jaunty to Karmic. What's interesting is that the problem only appears after running gimp once. If I create a new user, ssh -Y newu...@localhost, then I can run gimp fine, and the file open dialog works normally. However, if I run gimp again, it crashes. I then tried the same experiment again, and created a new user. This time I repeatedly rsync'd the new user's home directory to /attic: before logging in, after logging in, after running gimp successfully, and after it crashed. I noticed the creation of ~/.gimp-2.6, ~/.thumbnails, etc. So I decided to remove ~/.gimp-2.6, and was able to run gimp again. However, after one successful run, gimp always crashed on the second run, without even having to ctrl-O. So I tried the same thing with my normal user. Removing ~/.gimp-2.6 allows gimp to run normally once, but crashes on invocation every subsequent attempt, unless I keep removing the newly created ~/.gimp-2.6. Notice that this behavior is different; before removing ~/.gimp-2.6, I was able to start gimp, and it did not crash until I tried to open a file. After removing it once, I must remove it before running gimp, or else I don't even get the chance to try to open files. [Bug 432706] Re: cannot change governor from command line
FYI (I'm not sure how relevant this still is) but 4294967295 is as recognisable a number as 1001 is: it's -1 on a 32bit processor, or 0x. The 1001 number in the kernel mod I use is assigned by policy-cpuinfo.transition_latency = 1001; A grep for other modules setting this: grep 'policy-cpuinfo.transition_latency' /usr/src/linux/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/*.c reveals a bunch of modules, for the different CPUs, that set: policy-cpuinfo.transition_latency = CPUFREQ_ETERNAL; CPUFREQ_ETERNAL can be found by: grep CPUFREQ_ETERNAL /usr/src/linux/include/* -R /usr/src/linux/include/linux/cpufreq.h:#define CPUFREQ_ETERNAL (-1) So that is indeed the figure. To reenable kernel ondemand/conservative support for your proc, simply edit the module source for your cpu, search for transition_latency = CPUFREQ_ETERNAL and replace it with 1000. Note of course that I have a different cpu, so you should consider such an action as 'experiemental'; if the ondemand/conservative gov switches too quickly and your proc can't handle it, your system might run v.slow or stand still, so boot up with the performance/userspace gov and switch over to test, rather than set ondemand/conservative as the default on-boot governor. This is of course just an FYI if you have the problem resolved another way; I just found the replies as I just updated my kernel and couldn't remember which file I edited first time round, so came back here to find my own post :-) -- cannot change governor from command line https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 512399] [NEW] inconsistent height and style of fonts in all applications after update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After a recent update to Karmic (sometime in the last week or so), I began noticing a strange font issue in all gtk+ applications. Certain characters would appear smaller and in a different face than others, causing unpleasant layout shifts as the UI coped with the changing size requests. I first noticed this in the unbuntu updater, then in firefox and thunderbird, and finally it began cropping up in all applications. After installing binary dists of firefox and thunderbird into my home directory (not using dpkg), those no longer showed the issue. I'm attaching screenshots from mousepad and it's font dialog, both of which are showing the problem right now. The problems persists even when changing fonts manually; some of the characters will still be drawn small any serifed. [Bug 432706] Re: cannot change governor from command line
This has been deliverately broken in recent kernel as it's been deemed too slow for us to carry on using. If like me you disagree, you can reverse the change quite easily if you're building your own kernel/modules, I'll try and post these details to where I can find people who've hit the same problem and want to undo the change. If you run: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_transition_latency you will notice the latency is 1001, which I thought looked highly suspicously like someone had hardcoded that number somewhere to be 1 more than a max number set somewhere where the ondemand/etc would work. You can find it in the file (assuming kernel sources are in /usr/src/linux) : /usr/src/linux/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/p4-clockmod.c If you search in that file for the number 1001 in that file, decrease it by one to 1000, and recompile the module (if you have p4-clockmod compiled as a module; if it's linked into the kernel you'll need to recompile the kernel and reboot). I have found that changing the up_threshold of the ondemand governor from its default to 40 makes it ramp its speed up when I need it to, and stay there until it drops back down again. With my usage pattern it's not making these switches very often, so any delays in changing the speed are perfectly acceptable -to me-. To do this, simply: echo 40 /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold Hope there's someone out there this helps. Oh, and of course, yay for open source! We don't have to someone telling us we can't do something with our own computer cuz they don't think it's fast enough! :-) -- cannot change governor from command line https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 258128] Re: double clicking on update-notifier opens multiple update manager windows
I understand you point of view also played with that idea for myself, but one of the following two scenarios are not logical: 1) when double clicking the notification symbol (and not having a open update manager window) the update manager opens two windows. 2) after opening one instance of the update manager and than clicking on the notification symbol does not open another update manager window. As I see it one of these scenaria should be altered. post scriptum, I also noticed after double clicking the notification symbol that both update magers showed the same update to execute. Re: [Bug 108382] Re: ps2 mouse does not work in Feisty FINAL VERSION
Hi Brian I have reinstalled 7.04 using the alternate cd (I booted from the original live cd but with no mouse it's hard to install). OK the info I have is as follows - uname -a Linux ubuntu 2.6.50-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux the other log files are attached which was a mission in itself (linux newbie) i've reconfigured xserver several times with different mouse settings and manually added lines to modules to load a 'driver' but it never changes the mouse doesn't work. The keyboard is fine. This seems to be quite a common error in the forums. I hope this info helps. [Bug 5823] So In English?
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 89088 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89088 I am relatively new to Linux and I've been trying to follow along with this thread so that I can understand how to install Electric Sheep. And I was hoping that someone might sum up what steps I have to do exactly to install it on Ubuntu Edgy Eft. If you're not willing I'll understand. On a completely different tangent. I was thinking that if you combined Electric Sheep to work with Beryl's Cube setup. What I was envisioning was that the top and/or bottom of the cube could be replaced by the Electric Sheep screen saver and then if the computer goes idle after N minutes it would just rotate the cube to the top or bottom. If running the screensaver all the time would be too intensive you could have black on top and bottom and it becomes active after the computer has gone idle and has rotated to one of the poles. -- Recent changes seem to have broken electricsheep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/5823 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
