[Bug 1448220] Re: package sgml-base 1.26+nmu4ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2024-04-17 Thread Loren McIntyre
This bug is still present in 1.30. I fixed it the same way as
mfisheresq, before finding this report.

## Bug Fix
The sgml-base package should create the /var/lib/sgml-base directory, and not
even need to check whether it exists.

$ sudo dpkg --configure sgml-base
Setting up sgml-base (1.30) ...
cannot open /var/lib/sgml-base/supercatalog.new for writing: No such file or
directory at /usr/sbin/update-catalog line 312.
dpkg: error processing package sgml-base (--configure):
installed sgml-base package post-installation script subprocess returned error
exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 sgml-base

## Context & Importance
This bug prevents any other packages from being installed until it's manually
fixed, and sgml-base cannot be blindly removed because of its role as a
dependency for help documentation that's a default part of plasma desktop, and
presumable other deafult help applications distributed as a default part of
desktop environments.

[Bug 878472] Re: Shotwell Viewer can't open files without file ending

2018-01-15 Thread Loren Dias
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3469 is Error 404.

For me this is a very big problem.

When I import photos from Google Drive they often don't have a file
extension but the unique file string as the name.

I have potentially deleted hundreds of thousands of photos I thought
successfully imported.

At the very least, it should notify you of XXX photos or other files
without extensions were not imported.

[Bug 162000] Re: Cannot use Ctrl-Tab as keyboard shortcut in gnome-terminal

I configure all my keyboard bindings to use Firefox style hotkeys,

Most of us grew up on Firefox first and Linux second, so it makes sense
to cater to our existing workflow.

This problem is still fundamental, I'm trying to figure out if its possible to
make the necessary edits here, or if the system prohibits it:

[Bug 1297904] Re: Pressing h hides the window

2014-06-22 Thread Loren Amelang
Installed RCN build of 14.04 on BBB, added gnome-desktop,
tightvncserver. At first, plain gray screen with X cursor in VNC. Edited
.vnc/xstartup per http://askubuntu.com/questions/475023/how-to-make-vnc-
server-work-with-ubuntu-desktop-without-xfce.

Now works, except 's' and 'd' are always shortcuts to system menu and
minimize all. So it isn't just vnc4 or 13.10...

Now works, except 's' and 'd' are always shortcuts to system menu and minimize
all. So it isn't just vnc4 or 13.10...
Also up and down arrows are max/minimize! Can't use command history!

I fixed the 's' with dconf-editor:
in org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings,
Toggle shaded state was ['PrimaryAlts']
No idea what shaded has to do with showing the system menu...

'd':
Hide all normal windows
['PrimarySuperd', 'PrimaryAltd', 'Superd']

Also maximize and unmaximize... Actually I searched for keybin
(couldn't type the 'd'!) and zapped anything with Super in it.

This would be easier if I could navigate in the dconf-editor window. My
mouse wheel moves several screenfulls up or down per click, clicking
above or below the scroll thumb moves way more than a screenfull, and
dragging the thumb moves the content about 1/8 of cursor distance. The
only reliable way to see all of the entries is to use the down arrow key
to step through all of them!

And I'm only using dconf because somehow my
System-Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts panel is missing - just not
there... Can't find any clues how to fix that.

This kind of thing is why Linux is a niche market.

I imagine the code could be adapted to generate AI thumbnails as it uses

[Bug 1005091] Re: NetworkManager does not manage device after install on IPv6 network

2012-06-04 Thread Loren M. Lang
Here a snippet from the file that gets generated by debian-installer (or
one of it's packages) before NM has it's hands on it. It will fail to
be modified correctly prior to my change:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface
iface eth0 inet6 auto

The stock ifblacklist_migrate.sh script creates this:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface
iface eth0 inet6 auto

My modified version will change the original file to this:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet6 auto

[Bug 1005091] [NEW] NetworkManager does not manage device after install on IPv6 network

2012-05-27 Thread Loren M. Lang
Public bug reported:

When installing Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 with debian-installer on a network
with IPv6 enabled, NetworkManager disabled network interfaces from
automatically configuring via DHCP in /etc/network/interfaces, but does
not disable them from automatically configuring IPv6. This prevents
NetworkManager from taking over control and managing the network
interface because it still appears to be maintained by the ifupdown, but
has IPv4 disabled from configuring at all. The resultant
/etc/network/interfaces file looks like this:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface
iface eth0 inet6 auto

Because there is a non-commented iface line for eth0, NetworkManager never
takes over management. My system is:
Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04
network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4

Booting the computer from an external drive with the same hardware on

[Bug 683714] [NEW] [arrandale] GPU lockup 9646efef

2010-12-01 Thread loren rogers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I shut the lid of my laptop to put it to sleep while I went on my
commute. THEN, when I opened it again, the screen was black with a mouse
cursor. Everything looked / sounded normal, but i could only see the
mouse on a black background.

Restarted using force poweroff.

then I kept getting this program crash.
Not sure what's going on here.. something's crashing over and over again.

Hope the logs help!

[Bug 258446] Re: JMicron internal card reader recognizes SD only when inserted at startup

2010-09-07 Thread Loren
Having this issue with a lenovo ideapad y450 (uses a jmicron card
reader) running lucid 10.04

If a sd card is inserted at boot it registers like so:
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 3965 MB, 3965190144 bytes
49 heads, 48 sectors/track, 3292 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2352 * 512 = 1204224 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk0p1 43293 3868160b W95 FAT32

But if its inserted after boot the device doesn't show up in fdisk -l.

[Bug 258446] Re: JMicron internal card reader recognizes SD only when inserted at startup

2010-09-07 Thread Loren
Oh, and the fix from post #61 doesn't fix it, I'm getting:

mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card

whenever I insert a card after boot.

[Bug 231192] Re: [Network Settings GUI] DNS Server and Search Domains Add buttons overwrite item currently being edited

2009-12-11 Thread Loren
I am still running Ubuntu 8.04 (for 3rd party software support reasons)
but it is fully up to date. I have just tested this bug and found it to
still be intact. Let me detail the steps to reproduce the bug and let me
know if you can reproduce it in Karmic Koala.

1) open the System-Administration-Network application
2) Select the DNS tab
3) click the Unlock button and enter the password to unlock the dialog
4) Click the Add button (to add a new DNS server)
5) for example let's type 8.8.8.8

HERE IS THE BUG:

6) now say we want to add a SECOND DNS (say 8.8.4.4) the obvious thing
to do is click Add a second time

If you haven't pressed Enter, clicking Add will remove the 8.8.8.8
entry and replace it with Type address.. and search domains works the
same way.

[Bug 391384] [NEW] same gnome game freezes up after completion

2009-06-23 Thread Loren Dettmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Ubuntu 9.04
1:2.26.1-0ubuntu2

On completing game, the dialog boxes do not come up (either, high score
dialog box or the start new game dialog box) nor can I use the menu bar
to close the game out or anything else. The only way to get anywhere is
to hit the escape key several times to get a new game to start, then the
game again works correctly till the end of the game.

This only seems to happen after the first or second game. So it is an
intermittent problem.

Thanks,

Loren Dettmann

Re: [Bug 251503] [NEW] Send/Receive tab not active. Mail stuck in Outbox.

Sorry for the alarm. I noticed the cable connection icon in the lower
left of my screen showed a break. Clicking on it corrected my problem.

[Bug 231192] [NEW] [Network Settings GUI] DNS Server and Search Domains Add buttons overwrite item currently being edited

2008-05-16 Thread Loren
Public bug reported:

This is a bug in the Network Settings GUI in Ubuntu 8.04.

This applies to the DNS tab on the Network Settings dialog:

UBUNTU VERSION:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

BUG DESCRIPTION:

if a DNS server IP address or a search domain is being edited (or is
selected for editing with the text cursor flashing in it) and you click
the + Add button, the item you are currently editing will be replaced
by the new entry.

DESIRED BEHAVIOR:

When a field in the either list is being edited, clicking the add button
should close the current item *AND* add a new one (perhaps unless the
current item isn't valid). The same bug applies to the Search Domains
list This is a look and feel issue, but is very unintuitive.

[Bug 231218] [NEW] unable to fix bad mounting options without editing gconf manually

2008-05-16 Thread Loren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mount

OS AND PACKAGE VERSION:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-mount
gnome-mount:
  Installed: 0.8~svn20080225-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 0.8~svn20080225-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 0.8~svn20080225-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

DESCRIPTION:

If the user enters invalid Mount Options that prevents a device from
automounting, there is no way for the user to correct the error without
extensive knowledge of how the automount system works.

HOW TO REPRODUCE:

1) After logging in, Attach a removable storage device to the system
(via USP for example)

2) After the device mounts, locate the devices icon on the desktop.

3) Right click on the icon, Select Properties, and go to the Drive
tab, and open the Settings disclosure triangle

4) Enter an illegal Mounting Option (for instance -r instead of
ro)

5) close the dialog

6) disconnect the device... wait for the system to recognize the device
is unplugged and remove the devices icon

7) reconnect the device

RESULT:

The user is present a dialog box indicating Cannot mount volume:
Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'USB DRIVE'
with only an OK button for user interaction. There is no way for the
user to correct the invalid entry before or after the user presses ok.

WORK AROUND:

After much unsuccessful googling, I was finally able to eventually able
to remedy this issue by:

1) interrogating ps to determine what program owned the Cannot mount
volume dialog (identifying it as gnome-mount)

2) reading the gnome-mount man page to determine where gnome-mount
stores its mount options (
/system/storage/drives/DEVICE_SPECIFICATION/mount_options within the
gconf system)

3) using gconf-editor to edit the mount option to be the correct value
ro.

This does not strike me as anything an average user would consider the
least bit obvious.

SUGGESTED BEHAVIOR:

I think the most obvious way to handle this is to make any device that
fails to be mounted leave a mostly-disabled icon on the desktop as long
as it's connected (probably with an indicator that it's disabled due to
an error, such as the exclamation icon overlay that MicroSoft uses in
their hardware manager*), so that the user can easily modify the devices
properties and correct the error.

NOTES:

* This suggested icon idea relies on the desktop manager (nautilus?)
supporting some system for icon overlays that I don't believe it
currently does. Even without this gnome-mount could still display a
disabled icon.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hi, I was going through the proccess of updating to Fiesty Kubuntu, I
received the first packs through Adept and as soon as it went to the
next stage the bug occured. No problem for me though, I don't mind and
like to hack. Keep up the good work with the Ubuntu project, I play with
many distros and all in all, you have one of the best. I would love to
help with what I can, I have no programing knowledge, so writing code is
out for me, but will do what I can.

 Thanks,
