[Bug 1332950] Re: HFS+ unable to access random files after a while

2015-07-16 Thread Luc Pionchon
There is a PATCH proposed on kernel/fs mailing list [1]

It has been 'merged' by Andrew Morton [2]

[1] http://marc.info/?l=linux-fsdevelm=143545558620113w=2
[2] http://marc.info/?l=linux-fsdevelm=143630760319982w=2

Any idea when this will reached mainline kernels and be compiled for ubuntu?

Could it be backported to official ubuntu kernels?

[Bug 1451398] Re: too few information on Authentication Dialog

2015-05-25 Thread Luc Pionchon
Additionally,

it seems that the dialog is blocking the screen, preventing the user to
check other windows

If I cancel the authentication, I am not sure how to restart the action
(that triggered the authentication request) later, like for example an
automatic bug report...

It's weird that reports cannot be forwarded. Anyway, I created a new one:

This report can be closed.

Thanks for your support Plillip!

[Bug 1450180] Re: gparted crashes immediately after started

2015-05-19 Thread Luc Pionchon
Yes, right, there is libglibmm-2.4-1c2a

- libglibmm-2.4-1c2a | 2.43.2-0ubuntu1~vivid1 (gnome3-staging)
- libglibmm-2.4-1c2a | 2.42.0-1 (ubuntu)

(I was mistaken with libgtkmm, in my comment earlier)

I downgraded libglibmm to 2.42 from Ubuntu, and gparted works. Thanks for your
help!

So could this report be forwarded/assigned to gnome3 team?

[Bug 1450180] Re: gparted crashes immediately after started

2015-05-18 Thread Luc Pionchon
Phillip,
I certainly missed something, but, as far as I can understand,

1. gparted does not use gtk 3
2. gparted uses gtk 2
3. gparted, libgtk-2 and ligtkmm-2 are provided by Ubuntu

$ apt-cache madison gparted libgtk2.0-0 libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a
gparted | 0.19.0-2 | http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ vivid/main i386
Packages
libgtk2.0-0 | 2.24.27-0ubuntu1 | http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
vivid/main i386 Packages
libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a | 1:2.24.4-1.1 | http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
vivid/main i386 Packages

Could you explain how gtk 3 is related to gparted?

Ubuntu does not ship gtk 3.16, hence my question as to where you got it.
OK! I have GNOME3 ppa enabled, that pulls gtk 3.16 indeed.

How is it related to gparted?

[Bug 1450180] Re: gparted crashes immediately after started

2015-05-17 Thread Luc Pionchon
you need gtk 3.16 installed for this to happen.

my gparted uses gtk-2.
Do you mean that without gtk-3 on the system, gparted works?

Package: gparted
Version: 0.19.0-2
Depends:
libglib2.0-0 (= 2.12.0),
libglibmm-2.4-1c2a (= 2.42.0),
libgtk2.0-0 (= 2.14.0),

2015-05-17 Thread Luc Pionchon
So you mean you have third party or self built packages installed?

if this is addressed to me (?), the answer is no. (see also my Comment #14)
On my system, gparted and gtkmm come from 'http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
vivid/main'

As far as I can see, gparted in Ubuntu 15.04 is using GTK2:

But OK,

what Srdjan suggests in Comment #10 seems to be the root cause. (any
rationale to think otherwise?)

The bug was acknowledged and fixed upstream:

[Bug 1340907] Re: cannot edit tags in m4a files

2014-07-17 Thread Luc Pionchon
As I understand, rhythmbox was using a GStreamer plugin to edit m4a
tags, named qtdemux (for Quick Time demuxer)

But this plugin disappeared(?) since Ubuntu Precise.

It appears in Ubuntu Lucid [1], but is not anymore in Ubuntu Trusty [2]

Lucid has gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.21-1ubuntu2 [3]
Trusty has gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.31-3+nmu1ubuntu5 [4]

[Bug 1332950] [NEW] HFS+ unable to access random files after a while

2014-06-22 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

I have a dual boot OSX+Ubuntu on a Macbook.
The drive is a SSD.
I use a partition to share files between both.
The partition is HFS+ Non journalized Case sensitive.

It has been some weeks (months?) now that accessing some files fails.
It's only some files, not others. I see no obvious reason why these ones and
not others.
Usually unmounting and remounting may give access back, but not always.
After a while again some files start to be unaccessible. Not especially the
same files as earlier.
Checking the filesystem either on OSX or Ubuntu sometimes gives errors, but not
always.

The type of error I get is like:
$ ls -l .
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 1 me me 14 Jun 20 13:09 originals
$ ls foo/
ls: reading directory foo/: Invalid argument
$ touch foo/bar
touch: setting times of ‘foo/bar’: Invalid argument

Or in nautilus, I get errors like
Sorry, could not display all the contents of “foo”: Error when getting
information for file '/media/share/foo/baz': Invalid argument

some other times I can list the parent directory and some files appear
with no attributes, like this:

$ ll /media/share/foo/abc/
ls: cannot access /media/share/foo/abc/maps: Invalid argument
ls: cannot access /media/share/foo/abc/rewire.jpg: Invalid argument
d? ? ? ?? ? maps

[Bug 1293575] [NEW] HFS+ partition fails to remount read-write after crash / forced reboot

2014-03-17 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

I am using a double boot MacBook with OSX and Ubuntu.
I have an HFS+ partition to share data [1] between the 2 systems.

For a while I have been experiencing freezes and crashes with no other
issue than to power off the machine. As a consequence, the HFS+
partition is unmounted not cleanly, and after I reboot, the HFS+
partition is read only, and I fail to remount it read-write.

In the past (like 6+ years ago) I found a workaround by running an HFS related
tool, which as a side effect was remounting the partition cleanly.
Unfortunately I forgot what it was.

Currently, as a workaround, I pay a short visit to OSX, which mounts the
partition correctly; then when I reboot back to ubuntu the partition is
mounted read-write. But this round trip is a pain.

(I file this report against the package hfsplus, as a first heuristic, because
I really don't know where it belongs)

[1] this is the most reliable filesystem I found to be used both by OSX and
Linux, and including the features I need (like access rights, file names, and
symlinks). If you know a better one, this might solve my specific situation.

when I close the lid of my laptop (MacBook 2,1),
the system does not suspend.

Apparently the CPU is running high,
because when I return to my laptop,
it is very hot and the fan is turning full speed.

When I reopen the lid the system does not resume.
Mouse and keyboard are not active.
The only way out is to switch off the laptop.

I found out the issue. I had a variable CXX=colorgcc which was
responsible for the failure.

[Bug 1186284] [NEW] Add a mechanism to add systemwide aliases

2013-05-31 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

I am making a package that contains bash aliases.
The aliases should be available system wide in all bash interactive shells

I found nowhere to install them:
- /etc/bash.bashrc
will be overwritten by the next bash upgrade

- /etc/profile.d/my-aliases.sh
affects login shells but not interactive shells

- /etc/bash_completion.d/my-aliases.sh
works, but this is a hack.

I wish there would be a directory:
/etc/bash.bashrc.d/ where we can install bash-files.sh

and /etc/bash.bashrc would source them:

if [ -d /etc/bash.bashrc.d ]; then
  for ii in /etc/bash.bashrc.d/*.sh; do
if [ -r $ii ]; then
  . $ii
fi
  done
  unset ii
fi

(Or is there an existing place or a way to get these aliases in all user
interactive shells?)

[Bug 1185238] Re: linking problem with libstdc++6, compilation fails

2013-05-29 Thread Luc Pionchon
I have tried to add /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu to LD path, but it did not
help.

This right above was a wrong statement. I tried to, but screwed the
syntax.

Now I ran

$ LDFLAGS='-lstdc++ /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6' ./configure
$ make V=1

and compilation completes.

I have no idea why libstdc++ is not in the ld path/flags
It used to work fine a few weeks ago.

Yes, I don't recall I filed the bug report under gcc.

I am just typing 'make' to compile.

I think there is something wrong somewhere that in the last weeks it
stopped just compiling.

[Bug 1185238] [NEW] linking problem with libstdc++6, compilation fails

I have tried to add /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu to LD path, but it did not help.

[Bug 1182727] Re: computer crash (on web page, firefox?)

2013-05-23 Thread Luc Pionchon
What are the risks of using this fresh kernel? I want to help but I am
not very eager to play with fresh kernels.

Since yesterday I noticed several times the image rendering issue (see
enclosed), but no crash.

I have a doubt now: I am not sure. There was an update a few days ago.
It needed a reboot, but I had some work ongoing. I am not sure that I
actually rebooted since. Could this have been related if I did not
rebooted after the update?

On another hand I got the crash two times in a row, so there was a reboot in
between.
Does it make any sense?

** Attachment added: image rendering issue (the image exists and is not
corrupted)

[Bug 1182727] [NEW] computer crash (on web page, firefox?)

2013-05-21 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

My computer crashed two times in a row.

See the attached photo of the screen at the second crash.

I report this against linux as a last recourse.

== Activity at crash time:

It might be related, or NOT? At least the second time (maybe the first time
too) I was visiting this web page, with firefox:
http://oluc.github.io/p-/ its a default page from github. Some time before the
crash, I had notice on this page that the title background (the blue texture)
was missing, and replaced by garbage (like random memory bits (?)).

== Some basic info about linux and firefox

[Bug 236183] Re: localepurge cannot be made to work outside /usr/share/locale

2013-05-13 Thread Luc Pionchon
This patch adds more directories to look at.
It is still hardcoded.

Of course because it deletes stuff as root, it must be double checked.

[Bug 1174607] [NEW] package for gtkspellmm

2013-04-29 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

GtksSpell provides also C++ bindings: http://gtkspell.sourceforge.net

I can see that they are provided on fedora, but are missing on ubuntu
(and debian)

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/name/gtkspellmm30?_csrf_token=f93742c5a6d8357c73c27a01b75e8d7c3fbb289a
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=gtkspellsearchon=namessuite=raringsection=all

GNOME Gnote application, at least, is missing libgtkspellmm.

[Bug 1159430] Re: Nautilus 3.7.92 breaks desktop background on Unity

2013-04-29 Thread Luc Pionchon
I confirm: on upgraded raring, with gtk+ theme Ambiance or Radiance, the
desktop background is not drawn under desktop icons (just plain white
color). With other themes, the desktop background is drawn under desktop
icons.

Following on comment #24,
What needs to be modified in [1]?

[1] /usr/share/themes/Radiance/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css to get back the
correct behavior.

Currently it looks at:

/usr/share/man
/usr/share/gnome/help
/usr/share/omf

It could also look at the following folders:

/usr/share/help-langpack/

[Bug 1075742] [NEW] no applet transparency on fallback gnome-panel

2012-11-06 Thread Luc Pionchon
Public bug reported:

I am using the GNOME 3 fallback mode on Ubuntu 12.10
I set a panel with transparent background [1]

== As a result,
- the free areas of the panel are transparent
- But all the applets get a solid background color,
  instead of a transparent one.
for example indicators, the clock applet, the character palette applet, etc.
it makes some applets unreadable like the clock or the character palette
- there is one exception: the launchers get a proper transparent background

I am using the Ambiance theme.

This seems (?) to be the same story as with bug 349774 [2], but with the
GNOME 3 technology (GTK3 / CSS). As far as I understand (?) the theme
sets a hardcoded solid/gradient bacground, so when you set a transparent
background to the panel, the applets keep an hardcoded solid background.
Then maybe (?) something to do with
/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/gnome-panel.css. Just a guess. I
may be completely wrong.

[1] steps to set transparent panel
Alt-right click on the panel
select Properties
select Background
check Solid color
set Style to some level of transparency
