[Bug 746536] Re: cannot use Alt-Tab or Super while the menu of an application is displayed

As I have said above: the Super key arrives at Unity even when menus
are open: Unity displays the shortcut characters over icons (123..., s,
f, a) when Super is pressed for a longer time.

Also, I'm not sure if the status of the bug should be opinion, as this
is a real usability bug. It may be hard to fix, but still a bug.

If these are statistics, is there any reason why they must be collected

[Bug 744914] [NEW] transliterate text/use collation before adding to xapian db and when searching

2011-03-29 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

As of now software center uses str.lower() when searching in the xapian
db:

utils/query.py
22:s = search_term.lower()
33:query =
xapian.Query(str_to_prefix[search_prefix]+search_term.lower())

There are two problems with this:
* many languages have diacritic marks for characters but for fast typing users
usually write the base character: (in Romanian: ăâșțî and ĂÂȘȚÎ are spelled
AASTI by some users).

* characters in the Unicode set can appear in two forms: composed and
decomposed: the character U+00C7 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C WITH CEDILLA)
can also be expressed as the sequence U+0327 (COMBINING CEDILLA) U+0043
(LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C).

To solve both problems both the text entered in the xapian db and the
user's text query must be normalized.

The search function in Chromium uses ICU rules to achieve this:
- http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1100
-
http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#OAMlx_jo-ck/src/third_party/WebKit/Source/WebCore/editing/TextIterator.cppq=file:TextIterator.cppl=1882

There is a python-icu library that could help achieve this. See for
example http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/pyicu-
dev/2010-October/000214.html

Or one could just remove the diacritical marks from the string
altogether: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517923/what-is-the-best-
way-to-remove-accents-in-a-python-unicode-string

[Bug 744670] [NEW] display waiting animation when loading package description

2011-03-28 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

1. In unity select an application that can be downloaded (not installed
locally).
2. This will bring up software-center with the default page with categories.
3. The user does not see his package and starts clicking around, open a
category or even a package description and suddenly is moved to the original
package.

It would be more helpful for the user to see a spin wheel and not be
presented with the default categories screen.

[Bug 433841] Re: Enable users to upload a screenshot

2011-03-28 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
You could implement this simpler for the users by changing the no screenshot
available box:
- make the box link to http://screenshots.debian.net/upload/$PACKAGE
- add a message like No screenshot available. You can contribute one by
clicking this box or going to http://screenshots.debian.net/upload/$PACKAGE;.

This functionality can be displayed if:
- the user has a Launchpad account associated with the email or
- the user selected a corresponding checkbox in software sources (similar to
how a user can enable sending of usage statistics) or
- always :)

[Bug 741786] [NEW] a11y: no visual cues when links are selected

2011-03-24 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Some users need to access the computer via keyboard only - or with
limited mouse capabilities.

Users can jump from element to element with the TAB key in the
application description and most elements from the description present a
visual cue when they have the keyboard focus.

Links do not change appearance in any way when focused. This applies at least
to:
* the website link
* be the first to review it link

Public bug reported:

* copy the URL into the clipboard

All these cases may be of interest to a user:

[Bug 727646] Re: searching openoffice does not match libreoffice

2011-03-23 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Ok, maybe the openoffice/libreoffice is not very clear.

But let's say Mozilla changes something that prevents Ubuntu from
packaging Firefox as-is and drops to Iceweassel.

Simple users don't know about the issues between Ubuntu and Mozilla,
but they do know they want their internet.

What would they search for? Firefox.
What would they see in the list? A list of packages for Firefox, but no Firefox.

Same here.

[Bug 740989] [NEW] reviews can be written in any language, no way to mark the language of one review

2011-03-23 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Anyone can write reviews, and some users will undoubtedly write reviews
in their own language.

There's no way to set the language of the review before posting it.
Software center should display a list of languages to pick from and
maybe do a little language auto-detection (to be fast it can check for
english or the sistem language, then for anything else).

Also, users should be able to filter reviews by the languages they are
interested in.

[Bug 741266] [NEW] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffff82

I needed to access some files from /home/maverick and:

$ mkdir /home/natty/mnt-maverick

$  ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase /home/maverick/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase
SOME-KEY-1

$ sudo ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek
Passphrase: type SOME-KEY-1
Inserted auth tok with sig [SOME-KEY-2] into the user session keyring
Inserted auth tok with sig [SOME-KEY-3] into the user session keyring

$ sudo mount -t ecryptfs /home/maverick/.Private /home/natty/mnt-maverick
[aes] - default
[16] - default
[plaintext passthrough = n] - default
[encripted file names = y] - changed from default 'n'
[FNEK sig = SOME-KEY-3]

$ cd /home/natty/mnt-maverick/Desktop
works ok, ls prints file names

$ mv somefile /home/
kernel-panic

$ evince /home/natty/mnt-maverick/Desktop/file.pdf

[Bug 741266] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffff82

2011-03-23 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Neah, this triggers when you're a complete moron (as me) and when you
type:

$ sudo mount -t ecryptfs /home/maverick/.Private /home/natty/mnt-
maverick

and it asks for a password, the entity asking for the password is not
sudo but mount.

I typed the wrong password: I typed my user password when I should have
typed SOME-KEY-1 from the above example.

Anyway, it would be nicer if mount failed with EINVAL, rather than
having a oops.

[Bug 418939] Re: Too many crimean tatar keyboard layouts added for Romania

2010-12-13 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
1. you should comment on the upstream bug:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23544

This is not a Ubuntu specific bug and it just tracks the status of the
one upstream. Also fixing this in Ubuntu is not recommended as hardly
any other distro will get the fix from Ubuntu.

2. The upstream maintainer agreed that 4 layouts may be a bit too much
for a community of less than 25000 people making 0.1 of the population
and I tried to find some Tatars to see if one of the layouts was good
enough or if they can be amended to contain the Tatar-specific letters
and the Romanian ones so that they'll be able to write correctly in both
languages without needing to switch between keyboard layouts.

Unfortunately I only found one Tatar ethnic and he wasn't writing
anything in Tatar on the computer and could not help me in this regard.
To be noted: he wasn't even aware of keyboard layouts for Romanian
either and was not using Romanian diacritics to write Romanian texts.

Sorin: you mention having some Tatar contacts. Could you please contact them
and see whether we can define a single keyboard layout that would either:
a) be enough for both their Tatar and Romanian texts
b) be enough for their Tatar texts

[Bug 635214] Re: dual screen docky cuts off bottom of screen

2010-10-13 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Unfortunately some of us cannot run with compositioning enabled when two
monitors are configured and the total screen size is too big for the
video card to handle.

I'd like to point out that not all windows are cut off. Docky's own
Preferences windows can be easily displayed.

As Docky and it's Preferences window can be displayed in the lower part
of the screen, I guess it could be fixed in software, couldn't it?

I attached a screenshot with a non-black only background so you can see

The screen resolutions:
- Left - 1920x1080
- Right  -1680x1050

Also, please not that mouse signals go through to the hidden windows.
In the attached image, right clicking in the lower-left part of the image will
bring up Terminator's context menu.

[Bug 640540] Re: Package manager: 404 not found on package eclipse-plugin-cvs 3.5.2-2ubuntu4.2 failed to install/upgrade: cannot access archive: No such file or directory

2010-10-12 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
The package seems to be in the official archive[1]. Do you download the
packages from an alternative archive?

It may have been out of sync. Try the official package archive, run
`sudo apt-get update` and see if it can be installed.

[Bug 325765] Re: Local mirrors are missing in synaptic apt mirrors list

2010-10-06 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
From Maverick's /usr/share/python-apt/templates/Ubuntu.mirrors:
#LOC:RO
http://ftp.astral.ro/mirrors/ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
http://ftp.gts.lug.ro/ubuntu/
http://ftp.roedu.net/mirrors/ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/
http://mirror.arlug.ro/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/
http://mirrors.adnettelecom.ro/ubuntu/archive/

ftp.roedu.net is the same server as ftp.iasi.roedu.net (or at least they both
resolve to the same IP).

I guess this is closed.

[Bug 632770] [NEW] translator-credits missing in .pot and no button in About menu to show translator

2010-09-07 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Unlike other applications (e.g. Gedit), software-center only has an Authors
button.
At leas a Translators button should be added.
Documentation and UI should be added if these were done by someone other than
the authors.

Also, the Authors tab should list some important (code) contributors
too.

[Bug 632773] [NEW] package name not selectable

2010-09-07 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

In the package description view the package name cannot be selected
(looks like an image). Because of this you cannot easily copy-paste it's
name to use it in to search about the package on the web, or stuff like
that.

[Bug 625745] [NEW] Alt-Left, Alt-Right don't work as Back/Forward like in all other GNOME apps

2010-08-28 Thread Lucian Adrian Grijincu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

In all GNOME apps that respect the GNOME HIG, Alt+Left means Go back,
and Alt+Right means Go forward.

While going back/forward is possible with the mouse, keyboard navigation
is not as well supported: software-center permits going back if the
Backspace key is pressed, and doesn't have a way to go forward with the
keyboard.

ProblemType: Bug
