[Bug 1372399] [NEW] Cannot adjust screen brightness on dell xps 13

2014-09-22 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Public bug reported:

The screen brightness of my notebook cannot be adjusted and is stuck in
a super low brightness.. I can barely see.

This problem started on 2014-09-12 and because I work with an external
hdmi monitor most of the time it took me a while to notice it.

I am pretty positive it start after I installed the new hardware support
a couple weeks ago.

The image on the external monitor is perfect.

[Bug 1372399] Re: [XPS 13 L322X] Cannot adjust screen brightness

2014-09-22 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Thanks Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch),

I downloaded the updated bios and created the boot usb.

I then changed my BIOS boot mode to Legacy in order to be able to boot
from the USB. I must have done something wrong for my UBS drive was not
bootable. Result: I was UNABLE to update the BIOS.

I then changed boot mode back to UEFI and, to my surprise, the notebook
booted to a perfectly normal screen brightness and fully working
brightness function keys!

Not sure what or IF I should do something now...

It seems the problem was not due to the BIOS version.
I am unable to reproduce the problem.

If have some advice I can follow or when can just dismiss this bug
report?

$ gconftool --type string --set /apps/guake/keybindings/global/show_hide

Both gave me a keybinding error pop up. I am stuck with ShiftAlts

[Bug 848250] Re: Tomboy sync fails on Oneiric, New Note Template already exists

2011-11-09 Thread Luciano Panepucci
I think this is the same bug that affected me and for witch I have found
a workaround/solution and posted it on askubuntu.com at
http://askubuntu.com/questions/71733/tomboy-notes-failed-to-
synchronize/71882

I have beem suggested by a comment to post it here so here it goes:

In my new ubuntu 11.10 install the Tomboy notes synchronizes just some
of my notes notes and then fails. The details only shows the updated
notes. When I look at the .config/tomboy/tomboy.log I see the error:

10/24/2011 11:12:29 PM [ERROR]: Synchronization failed with the following
exception: A note with this title already exists: New Note Template
  at Tomboy.NoteManager.CreateNewNote (System.String title, System.String
xml_content, System.String guid) [0x0] in filename unknown:0
  at Tomboy.NoteManager.CreateNoteFromTemplate (System.String title,

[0x0] in filename unknown:0
  at Tomboy.GuiUtils+GtkInvokeAndWaitc__AnonStoreyC.m__2F (System.Object ,
System.EventArgs ) [0x0] in filename unknown:0

I have tryed changing the URL on the sync preferences to
https://edge.one.ubuntu.com/notes/ as sugested in question 66753 but it did not
work.

Then the solution I came with:

Since the error on the log mentioned a note named New Note Template I
created a note with that name through the ubuntu one web site and then
tried to sync again. This time tomboy detected the conflict and offered
some options to solve it. I chose to rename the local note and then it
synced all my notes correctly!

It sure is not perfect... I noticed that when I create a new note now
it comes up with the renamed name New Note Template (old)

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-26 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Hi quarara,

I have the same hardware (Dell Inspiron 15r) and ubuntu 11.10 release.

My touchpad was working in a super basic (move and click) mode.

After reading all the comments I got it working by installing Seth's
psmouse-alps-dkms_0.10_all.deb from comment #492.

Now I have:
 - touchpad preferences in system settings
 - two finger vertical and horizontal scroll
 - tow finger right-click

Seth Rocks!

Hello Seth,

I have 11.10 installed on a Dell Inspiron N5110:

When I try to install I get:

Any Idea?

My touchpad works the most basic may: move, right edge vertical scroll.
None of the multi touch works.. :-(

thanks,

the only thing that worked for me was comment #80 as follows:

for those who have issues on ubuntu 10.4, do the following:
open terminal
type: rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/gwibber and hit enter
open system monitor and kill any gwibber process
reload gwibber and proceed to add facebook
...when you login to facebook on gwibber to authorize it use your username not
your email
it should then say PERSON is authourised instead of facebook authorised
and the add button should appear, if you can't see it maximize the window.

[Bug 478969] Re: inkscape crashes with gnome globalmenu

2010-06-23 Thread Luciano Panepucci
How to Fix the inkscape globalmenu problem on 10.04 Lucid

First I removed globalmenu and Inkscape and reinstalled Inskscape but the
problem persisted!

I believe i has something to do with the fact that my Lucid installation
is actually an Upgrade (from 8.04) rather than an actual installation.

Anyway, this solved:

sudo apt-get purge gnome-globalmenu
sudo apt-get purge inkscape

sudo apt-get install inkscape

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

2010-06-22 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Hello,

I have this exact same problem with:

Inkscape 0.47 r22583 (Apr 4 2010)
globalmenu-panel-applet 0.7.5

I am running a 10.04 fully updated that was upgraded from a Hardy
installation.

Starting from the command line I get:

$ inkscape

GLib-GObject-ERROR **: Attempt to add property GtkMenuBar::local to class after
it was derived
aborting...

Emergency save activated!
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org
with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it.

Sorry it the fix there but I couldnt find it.

Thanks in advance.

I removed the globalmenu applet from the panel, logged out and back in

[Bug 157266] Re: gnome-terminal with --command option fails after first time

2010-02-02 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Hello,

Sorry if I sound arrogant or inconvenient in any way, it is not my
intention. It just happens that I would very much like this to work and
cant understand why this bug endures until now if it was reported back
in 2005 (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324407#c1)..

Why can't the terminal just stay open and operational after the commands
execution?

is this just because of a super low priority or is it really a hard
thing to fix?

[Bug 157266] Re: gnome-terminal with --command option fails after first time

2010-02-02 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Hi, just to let you know that I found a way to leave the prompt open and
operational http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-296628.html

Basically you just have to create a script that initiates the command
/bin/bash

then if you want to run some specific command whe that shell opens you
need to create a custom .bashrcCustom and pass it with the --rcfile
option like this:

#! /bin/sh

/bin/bash --rcfile .myCustombashrc

hope this helps someone

[Bug 480004] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 install problems

2009-11-24 Thread Luciano Panepucci
mine is a fresh 9.10 install.
Display came up very low res. Hardware Drivers presented three options.
Choosing the recommended (185) gave me a blank screen and the LCD complained
about refresh rate out of range..
running $sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg did nothing.
from the shell (ctrl+alt+F1) I edited xorg.conf and changed the nvidiato nv
and then restored my lowres default driver...
version 173 also did not work. same out range problem.

the oldest version works. then I can open teh nvidia display managem and
change to a decent resolution...

regards,
Luciano

[Bug 146828] Re: gdm uses incorrect screen resolution

2009-04-11 Thread Luciano Panepucci
I also had this issue after gutsy2hardy update with nvidia card. The gdm
login screen had a super high virtual resolution. I remember going
trough a lot of trouble getting the desktop resolution ok. Commenting
the virtual line in xorg did not work for me. What worked for me was
leaving just the resolution mode I use on the modes line, just as did
Mariano on comment #7 of the duplicate bug:

Forgot to mention something that I dont know if has anything to do with
the issue...

While trying to solve my gdm login resolution I considered using xrandr
as a pre-gdm-script but while testing it on the shell as described in

tried it.

2008-04-28 Thread Luciano Panepucci
HEllo,

Yes, as I described in my last comment. After waiting a really long time
(many hours) with the progress bar still stopped I pressed crtl+c. Only
then the process actually stoped and prompted me to report a bug.

Just to make myselt clear I mean I really waited many hours before pressing
crtl-c.
I tryed to finish the upgrede process agains but again had the exact same issue.

If perhaps there was some kind of watcher program that I could
iniciate before restarting the upgrade I could try it. Just give the
orientation.

thanks

2008-04-15 Thread Luciano Panepucci
Hello Richard,

After the distribution upgrade failed I restarted and there was a
notification of the problem and I clicked it. It then tried to continue
the upgrade but stopped at the same point. One detail I did not explain
in detail is that both the first and the second time what happened was
that the progress bar stopped and I waited a really long time before I
was sure it was a bug. THEN with the process bar stopped I clicked on
the terminal of the dist upgrade dialog and hit CRTL+C. After the CRTL+C
the dist-upgrade asked me if I wanted to report this bug to the
developers and thats how I got here.

ok. I have attached the files of /var/log/dist-upgrade
hope it helps!

[Bug 141269] Re: nautilus stoping responding then opening directory witch contains 1600 photos. After update 16 Sept.

2007-11-06 Thread Luciano Panepucci
I moved to gutsy making a fresh install and now I'am having a similar
issue that I do not remember having on Feisty:

When I open a directory with many files (700 pitctures in this case)
Nautilus grays out for 30 seconds while Loading... the contents.
However, in my case it comes back with the file list after those killer
seconds.

This gray out only seems to happen while on the LIST VIEW any other open
Nautilus windows gray out at the same time.

The backtrace I attached does not seem to help since Nautilus does not
really crash. It only hangs for a while.. If there's another way to get
a backtrace during the hang please tell me.
