[Bug 1338185] Re: networking fails in 32-bit 14.04 using HyperV on Win2012R2
Following up on latest kernel, I upgraded kernel on Ubuntu 14.04LTS 32-bit Hyper-V VM with 2GB memory to v3.16-rc6 then increased to memory to 4GB after confirming kernel upgrade. It still experiences network issue/bug. I also tried more recent kernel v3.16-rc7 with the same results. Once the memory is increased, network is disconnected. Also tested 14.04LTS 32-bit VM with 4GB memory (no kernel upgrade) on VMWare ESXi 5.5. [Bug 1338185] Re: networking fails in 32-bit 14.04 using HyperV on Win2012R2
I encountered the exact same issue with loss of network upgrading Ubuntu 12.04LTS 32-bit to 14.04LTS 32-bit on a Hyper-V VM (Windows 2008R2). I went through the same steps to do a fresh install of 14.04LTS 32-bit and had the same result. Also found Ubuntu 14.04LTS 64-bit worked well and did not experience this issue. After much testing, I found that if I dropped the RAM of the Ubuntu 14.04LTS VM to 4014MB on 2008R2 Hyper-V (4026MB on Hyper-V 2012R2), the network adapter will show up and network connectivity will resume (Will have internal system errors however). I then dropped to 2048MB and Ubuntu is stable and network is connected. My Ubuntu 12.04LTS 32-bit VMs run 4GB wonderfully and never experienced issues with memory/networking. Also tested on different hosts and found this network issue is the same on Hyper-V versions 2008R2, 2012 and 2012R2 when memory is pushed to 4GB for the VMs. I tested Ubuntu 14.04LTS 32-bit on a physical machine with 4GB of RAM and system runs great, no network issues. The download of 14.04LTS 32-bit does display for machines running 2GB or less. [Bug 219061] Re: [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems)
This bug is so old, there is no point in continuing with it. The release is obsolete, and the specific hardware in question is also relatively out of date. I still have the hardware in question, but have long since switched to Debian server for it, which has always worked flawlessly in this application. It is possible that the root problem in this case *may* have been that the Ubuntu i386 releases have had many bugs related to actual i386 support. I have filed other bugs in this regards, but these bugs would get fixed for one release, only for the identical bug to appear again in the next release. That however was a release management issue, which is not something in the scope of this bug report. If support for this class of hardware is no longer important to Ubuntu, then there is no point in anyone else wasting effort on it. I have marked this issue as invalid, as there is no option for so old probably nobody cares any more. However, it was a valid problem at the time. As background, the motherboard mentioned in this report is an embedded Mini-ITX board used in things like point of sale and industrial applications. ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219061 Title: [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/219061/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 807736] Re: Multiple monitors with different resolution: window maximization broken
In my case I can't even resize the windows in the laptop screen. The application of the window crashes (killed). To resize a window I must drag it to the external display, resize, and move down to the laptop screen. Maximizing in the laptop screen throws the window to the topbar, making it invisible. Had to find it and drag it with alt+mouse somewhere else, and resize it. 1366x728 + 1680x1050 Ubuntu Natty, Unity. Other than that, if it was not for the not_supported Optimus (Intel+nVidia) it would be working great. ** Description changed: I have a 1366x768 laptop that I connect to an external 1920x1080 monitor. Windows maximize correctly on the monitor that is up or left. Windows maximize incorrectly (they half-disappear into the void) on the monitor that is down or right. It doesn't matter which monitor is set as primary. Steps to reproduce: connect a second monitor and select a different resolution than the first monitor. Set vertical layout (one monitor over the other) or horizontal layout (side-by-side). Open one window on each monitor. Click the maximize button and observe the brokenness. Try using the grid plugin and observe the brokenness (windows on the bottom or right monitor half-disappear outside the monitor). I do apologise, but I'm only semi literate in Linux (if that!) and tamely followed the instructions on the crash before I thought it through. Having just now repeated the steps to determine whether the crash was a result of having tried to install some modem software, I realized that I had downloaded this: hsfmodem-7.80.02.03full-dellhybrid.tar.bz2 of and it's for Ubuntu 8.10, not the 10.10 live cd I was using. I went back and fired up 10.10, opened a terminal window and did a find on what I knew to be a nonexistant utility (which is what had caused the crash) and it worked fine. It appears that trying to install the above package to the wrong OS is what caused it, not a true bug at all. Synaptic reports that the current installed version of python-nevow is 0.9.31-4ubuntu2 If python 2.5 is used instead of 2.6, no warnings are issued. The second and third deprecation warnings are due to simple changes in the layout of the standard Python library which happened between 2.5 and 2.6. I'm not sure (in detail) what is causing the first warning. Both python 2.5 and 2.6 symlink these files to /usr/share/pyshared/nevow. That won't work because versions 2.5 and 2.6 need slightly different versions. This will likely be a problem with Python 3.0 as well (I haven't installed or tested it though) as it also uses the new library layout. ** Affects: nevow (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Deprecation errors when importing Nevow into Python 2.6 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What we have established is that the problem is indeed a new one (not present in any version of 8.04). [Bug 254453] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha-3 Intrepid Ibex - Via C3 CPU not Supported
Forest Bond wrote: I have one case where a user installed Ubuntu 8.04 server edition on an EPIA EK board and the machine failed to boot for the first time after installation. The Via web site says: The VIA EPIA EK Mini-ITX embedded board is available with the 1GHz or fanless 800MHz VIA Luke CoreFusion™ processor platform. Another page states: The VIA CoreFusion processor platform is based on the 'Nehemiah' core architecture. Wikipedia (if it can be believed) claims the Nehemiah has the cmov instruction. Therefore, it seems possible that the board in question has the cmov instruction. The Nehemiah was a major redesign of the Via processor. The C3 name was kept more for brand recognition purposes than as any reflection of what was in the package. The CoreFusion processors have integrated the Northbridge into the Nehemiah CPU to reduce size and package count. There is more than one version of CoreFusion chip. The differences seem to be related to what sort of graphics and other peripherals were integrated into them. If the above chain of information is correct, the problem the other user was reporting was not related to cmov. It is possible however that there was some older version of the board which was also known as EK. Did this other user provide the contents of /proc/cpuinfo? [Bug 254430] Re: Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha 3 Installer - Mouse does not work
I am not able to reproduce this bug today. The mouse now works correctly with both the install and the live-CD (try without install) options. If I cannot find a way to reproduce this problem reliably, then I suggest that we close this. In attempting to reproduce this bug today, I also tried the 386 version. I got the following (different) error repeatedly when attempting the live-CD function about half a dozen times. apic=debug didn't help. noapic allowed it to start OK. I don't know if it has any bearing on the mouse problem. I don't get this with the x64 version. To be clear, this isn't the same problem, but I am mentioning it here in case it provides some clue. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option Is it possible that when booting from the CD, the system looks at what is on the hard drive and makes a decision based on what it saw there? The hard drive I did my original testing on (when the mouse wasn't working) had a Linux installation that was not compatible with the current hardware. Now that I have installed successfully, what is on the hard drive is compatible. I don't think I have a way of reproducing that previous condition, so I can't actually test the exact situation I had before. This theory though sounds a bit like grasping at straws, since the CD *shouldn't* depend on the hard drive. I don't have an explanation though of why I can't reproduce the mouse problem now. The processor is a VIA C3 Eden, commonly used on mobile and embedded boards (low power) and entertainment systems (e.g. MythTV boxes). According what I have been able to find out, the cmov instruction is an optional i686 instruction (i.e. is not required to be present for the CPU to be an I686), *not* an i386 instruction. The C3 does not implement this optional instruction. Re: [Bug 219061] Re: [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems)
I don't have a cable, but I can make one. A bigger problem is that although I have two PCs, I only have one monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I don't have a KVM switch. This means that I can only operate one PC at a time when installing software. I assume that you are referring to using the serial kernel debugger. I haven't used this before, and the information about it on the internet seems rather sparse. If you have any suggestions on how to work with this, I would be happy to give it a try (or anything else you can suggest that I do to provide more information). [Bug 219061] Re: [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems)
Further testing with RC-1 (on same system as above): I conducted further testing using version RC-1 on the 19th of April. The results are as follows: 1) The regular desktop (Gnome x386) still does not install, but now exhibits new symptoms. The live CD now makes it to displaying the desktop, but then locks up immediately, or at the very beginning of the install. This was tested approximately half a dozen times, and failed each time. The failure point would be slightly different each time. 2) The alternate install was not tested again (I will do this later and report the results) 3) The server version installed correctly with Grub and without any obvious issues. -- [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219061 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 219061] [NEW] [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems)
Public bug reported: 8.04 Hardy Beta Ubuntu (several versions) (current version for 17-Apr-2008) does not install correctly on the VIA EPIA Mini-ITX PD6000E motherboard for multiple reasons. All tests were with the i386 versions. 7.10 Gusty installs correctly without problems. 1) When trying to boot the regular desktop install from the live CD (regular Gnome Ubuntu), the system would crash. This occurs immediately after the point where the progress bar (shown during booting, waves back and forth below the Ubuntu logo) disappears, but just before the brown screen (which should show before the desktop fully appears) appears. I'm not sure if this description is clear enough, but there's no text which describes what step things are on. The essential point is that it is just before the live CD desktop should appear. This happens consistently at exactly the same point in the sequence (this was tested approximately 5 times). The system will either turn off, reboot, or simply freeze with a blank screen. 2) Using the alternate install CD (Gnome Ubuntu), everything will install except for Grub, which will not install. LILO can be installed, but the system hangs on reboot at [48.418762] Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision 3.20. 3) Using the server install, Grub will also not install. LILO will install and the system will reboot and run. Previous versions of Ubuntu (Gnome) have installed and run on this hardware. The system was running 7.10 previous to this. The PC is primarily used as a test system. Just prior to this install, the system very briefly had a version of Windows Server 2008 on it in a dual boot configuration with 7.10 Gusty. Both OS would dual boot with this fine. All the partitions were removed and the hard drive was completely reformatted several times during the course of attempting to get Hardy to install. The PC is used for test purposes, and the drive can be wiped at any time for further testing if necessary. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy] Does not install on VIA PD6000E Motherboard (Multiple problems) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219061 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 219064] [NEW] [Hardy Server] Changing consoles causes screen to go blank, requiring reboot.
Public bug reported: For 8.04 Hardy Beta Server (version current for 17-Apr-2008) changing console (ctrl-alt 1, ctrl-alt 2, etc.) causes the text to disappear resulting in a blank screen (except for the cursor). Changing back to the original console does not cure the problem. Typing on the keyboard will cause the cursor to move about the screen (in large increments), but no text is visible. The console may possibly not be accepting input when this occurs. Attempting to do a log-in and shutdown (by typing in the correct key sequence) did not work (several attempts were made). This was found while editing a config file with nano. When I switched back to the console which had nano, the portions of the screen which are in reverse video to display the menu options were visible, but only as white blocks on a black background, and with no visible text. (Nano is mentioned to assist in the description of the problem. This is not being reported as a nano problem). This occurred while testing installation of Hardy. The hardware is a Via Epia Mini-ITX PD6000E. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy Server] Changing consoles causes screen to go blank, requiring reboot. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 163738] QEMU won't allow 7.10 Ubuntu server or jeos to be installed.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qemu I attempted to install ubuntu jeos 7.10 in Qemu (Ubuntu 7.10 x86-64, qemu 0.9.0), but the installation would fail when the text based install program attempted to detect a (virtual) CD-ROM drive. The error message was: Detect and mount CD-ROM No common CD-ROM drive was detected. The message went on to suggest loading drivers from floppy, selecting a drive model manually, etc. Manually selecting any of the suggested CD- ROM drivers made no difference (all failed). The command line used was: qemu -hda Jeos-7.10 -cdrom ubuntu-7.10-jeos-i386.iso -m 512 -boot d The file used for qemu (Jeos-7.10 in the example above) was created by means of: dd of=ubuntu-test_7.10-jeos bs=1024 seek=4194304 count=0 The test was repeated with other Ubuntu versions (all x86-32) with the following results: 1) 7.10 jeos - (described above - failed). 2) 7.10 desktop - installed OK. 3) 7.10 server - failed (as above). 4) 7.04 server - installed OK. 5) 6.10 server - installed OK. The tests for 6.10 server and 7.10 jeos were repeated on a 386 (Via processor running Ubuntu 7.10) with the same results as above (6.10 server installed, while 7.10 jeos did not). All tests were conducted using an image file (iso) as the install source, not a physical CD drive. The key points to note are that the desktop version of 7.10 installs OK, but server or jeos for version 7.10 using the text based installer fail. Also 6.10 or 7.04 server will install, but 7.10 server (or jeos) fails. This seems to suggest the problem may be related to there being a different version of the text based installer in version 7.10. This may be related to bug #120316, but that one described it as a problem detecting the actual physical drive, whereas the problem reported here is happening with an image file (I did not test this with an image on a physical CD). Furthermore, the comments in #120316 reported problems with both desktop and alternate, whereas I am not seeing any problems with desktop (I did not test alternate). One comment in #120316 reported ata_piix.blacklist=yes as a boot option fixed the problem. I tried that, but it made no difference in the problem being reported here. These factors suggest this might not be the same thing as #120316. ** Affects: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- QEMU won't allow 7.10 Ubuntu server or jeos to be installed. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/163738 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134195] Re: (Gusty) kmediafactory does not install in main menu
The original bug report was intended to refer to Ubuntu (Gnome), not Kubuntu (KDE). I apologise if the original description was not clear enough. KMediaFactory should add itself to the Gnome Applications menu (Sound Video would be the most logical place). I have added some screen shots showing what happens (or rather what doesn't happen) during installation. The file names should be self explanatory. Briefly however, I started with a clean install of ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso. I then applied all updates. I then installed KMediaFactory using Synaptic. The KMediaFactory package installed, but didn't show up in any of the menus (the system was first rebooted just to prove that this doesn't help anything). If KMediaFactory is added to the menu manually, then the package will launch from the menu and work correctly. This problem was present in the previous version of Ubuntu (Gnome) also. This problem also affects some other KDE apps when used from Gnome. I don't have a list of those, so they aren't included in this bug report. I can run tests and file separate bug reports on those later. ** Attachment added: screen shots showing menu item is not present http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10273237/screen-shots.tar -- (Gusty) kmediafactory does not install in main menu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134195 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
