This is indeed fixed at least in version 1.8.1-1~flatpak1~20.04 as
installed from the official PPA.

[Bug 1951685] [NEW] Chromium flatpak reliably crashes xdg-desktop-portal

2021-11-20 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

For a while now I am facing the issue that Chromium installed via
Flatpak after a minute or so stops working with a puzzling error
ERR_NO_SUPPORTED_PROXIES. I guess this is due to the Proxy feature of
the desktop portal because now I noticed that the portal is actually
crashing shortly after I started Chromium and/or started browsing.

According to the stack trace this happens in get_one_app_state so I
think this bug was fixed in version 1.7.0 with this patch:
https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-
portal/commit/a0b641f1230016e8ed9a291c70d4dd226429dda4

Could that fix please be backported to 1.6.0/focal?

Title:

[Bug 1898456] [NEW] hp-plugin downloads plugins via insecure HTTP

2020-10-04 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

While looking what hp-plugin was doing when it was semmingly hung I
noticed that it calls wget to download an executable via plain HTTP even
though www.openprinting.org supports HTTPS:

Relevant part from ps axf:

 10353 pts/4Ss 0:00 | \_ /bin/bash
 10492 pts/4Sl+0:07 | | \_ /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/hp-plugin
 10507 pts/5Ss+0:00 | | \_ /usr/bin/wget --cache=off -P
$HOME/.hplip
http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/hplip-3.20.3-plugin.run

Looks like there are two issues here:

1. Unless a local file exists, a plugin descriptor is downloaded from
http://hplip.sf.net/plugin.conf
2. That one then contains the actual download URLs at www.openprinting.org
which are plain HTTP as well

The first one has checksums so theoretically it might be ok to download
the latter via HTTP (though there is no reason to do so) but the
checksums are downloaded via plain HTTP as well.

[Bug 1675192] Re: unbound forgets forwarder set via dhcp when config is reloaded

2017-03-30 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Thanks for triaging. I think you are right, restarts loose the
forwarders as well. At least most the time, I think I saw one instance
where it didn't happen but maybe the DHCP lease happened to be renewed
at the same time or I just imagined it.

[Bug 1675192] [NEW] unbound forgets forwarder set via dhcp when config is reloaded

2017-03-22 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

unbound is integrated quite nicely with resolvconf. When a system boots
up and eth0 is configured via dhcp and gets a DHCP server, the forwarder
is set properly. When you restart unbound, the forwarder is set
properly as well.

But if you reload the config, the forwarder is forgotten since the
resolvconf update script isn't called:

root@ip-172-31-20-36:~# unbound-control forward

root@ip-172-31-20-36:~# service unbound reload

[Bug 1530583] Re: Too small boot partition (and too large EFI partition) created with option "Use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM"

2016-01-13 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Ok, I understand the issue about the EFI partition. There is some rather long
winder FDO spec which might allow reusing of the EFI partition for /boot
purposes:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/BootLoaderSpec/

A boot partition of 256 MB is clearly too small for an EFI and/or Secure
Boot system though. (Even with /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal
which should already do some housekeeping there.) If the EFI partition
can't be reused, the /boot partition should IMO be at least 512 MB (IIRC
that's also what the FDO spec recommends).

[Bug 1530985] [NEW] RFE: Add ufw app profile for KDEConnect

2016-01-04 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

If the kdeconnect package put a proper config file into
/etc/ufw/applications.d it would be possible to allow access to the
service via some simple commands. I'll attach such a file.

[Bug 1530583] Re: Too small boot partition (and too large EFI partition) created with option "Use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM"

Not an installation but a design issue.

+ I (re)installed Kubuntu 15.10 with the partitioning option "Guided - Use
entire disk and set up encrypted LVM" on an empty disk. After the final
reboot, the partiton table shown below was created.

The EFI partition was created with 512 MB and the boot partition with
256 MB. From previous experiences is a 256 MB boot partition too small
and tends to fill up with old kernels (it is filled up to 50% with only
two kernels already). OTOH is a EFI partition with 512 MB quite big for
  the data usage I see.

IMO the sizes would make more sense the other way round: 256 MB EFI and
  512 MB boot.

[Bug 1530653] [NEW] Manual Disk Setup doesn't work with LUKS ("physical volume for encryption")

When installing Kubuntu 15.10 you can select Manual Partitioning/Disk

[Bug 1496940] [NEW] backported xe-guest-utilities pulls in cloud-init which does weird things and reconfigures the server

2015-09-17 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

It looks like xe-guest-utilities 6.2.0-1120+dsf1-0ubuntu1~14.04.0
appeared in trusty-updates recently. When I did an apt-get upgrade, the
previous version (from XenServer) was replaced. Which might be ok.

Unfortunately did it also pull in cloud-init via its dependencies which
made the reboot an interesting experience because cloud-init first tried
to contact various servers which failed and took a long time and then
replaced the SSH keys with new ones. Which broke our automation.

Please make cloud-init a recommended or even only suggested package.

Unfortunately due to the dependency on cloud-init did the introduction
of this package break a server which had already the vanilla XenServer

[Bug 1492835] [NEW] Changing line width of a shape crashes Impress

2015-09-06 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

I'm using LibreOffice Impress v5.0.1.2 from the libreoffice-5-0 PPA on
Kubuntu 14.04 (ie. 1:5.0.1~rc2-0ubuntu1~trusty1).

I can reproducibly crash it by

1. Create a new presentation
2. Drawing a shape like an ellipse
3. In the Properties pane, open the Line Width drop down and select another
width
4. LibreOffice closes without any message

It looks like opening and closing the drop down is enough.

I couldn't find any backtraces or drop downs anywhere. Please advise how
to collect and add any useful data.

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fail to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2014-01-22 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Wouldn't this be fixable by non-ltsing the package xserver-xorg (which
is only owner of the symlink and a bunch of conffiles anyway) and
changing the depends of the other packages, mybe introducing an
empty/virtual package for dependency resolution? It looks like xorg-
renamed-package-lts-foo is such a package already.

Not pretty but losing your X isn't pretty either.

[Bug 1190154] [NEW] please backport the missing logrotage file for the php5-fpm package

2013-06-12 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

This isse was reported in bug 706945 in 2011 already but closed as Won't
Fix with the weird explanation php5-fpm has been removed from upstream
so im closing this bug. php5-fpm is obviously still in Ubuntu/Debian in
2013 and is still missing a logrotate file.

I noticed this because of a rather big php5-fpm file on a busy staging
server.

There is one available in Debian's php5-fpm 5.4.11-1; it would be great
if that file could be backported to the package in precise (currently
5.3.10-1ubuntu3.6).

2013-06-12 Thread Malte S. Stretz
I'm not sure if it is worth a backport either, just wanted to bring this
up. I had to cope with a rather large log file which ate disk space but
generally (aka in production) the php5-fpm.log doesn't grow very much
and AFAIK is rewound on each restart, too. It would make my life easier
though because now I deploy the attached logrotate script manually :)

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fail to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink

2013-05-12 Thread Malte S. Stretz
To reproduce this do the following:

1. Install Ubuntu 12.04
2. Upgrade to the LTS enablement stack
3. Purge the old config via aptitude purge ~c

This will remove the files /etc/X11/X and /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and maybe
/etc/X11/default-display-manager can't remember if this was caused by
something else).

To fix this run (thanks to
http://askubuntu.com/questions/232926/etc-x11-x-not-executable-error-
when-startx)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

[Bug 1015010] Re: Cannot connect to Samsung Galaxy S III

2013-05-11 Thread Malte S. Stretz
I have to correct myself: I didn't restart my KDE session so I guess the
old libmtp was still used by the KDE daemons. After a new logon, mtp-
detect works fine!

This might also explain why the quick-connect hack worked (just
guessing): If I was quicker than the KDE daemon (whichever that is) I
was able to grab the phone with new new lib, else the old version would
have mis-initialized the device.

[Bug 1162511] Re: Allow Lightdm to lock the screen on automatic login

2013-05-10 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Happy happy joy joy :)

I had a quick look at the code, does it automatically work with any
session? (I just know that the auto-locking in KDM worked by setting the
environment variable DESKTOP_LOCKED which is interpreted by some magic
later on.)

[Bug 1178246] [NEW] missing man page for lightdm.conf

2013-05-09 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

There is currently (according to
http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/amd64/lightdm/filelist) no
lightdm.conf.5 man page which explains the file format and available
options. The canonical documentation seems to be
/usr/share/doc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.gz which should be converted to a

[Bug 1134492] Re: xserver-xorg-lts-quantal breaks Kubuntu

2013-04-18 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Instead of patching apt, wouldn't it be easier to ship a script like do-
release-upgrade (eg. do-lts-upgrade --component=xorg --component=linux
--target=quantal) which does all the necessary magic? It could even do
something like

1. trigger package downloads only
2. force-remove the old packages
3. install the new packages

That would circumvent any solver and possible brakages due to that.

No, I can't test it because I upgraded by now.

I reopened the bug because I think the official wiki page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack should get a big fat
warning that the recommended command can completely brick your
(K)Ubuntu. I also ran into bug 1168859 which rendered my touchpad
useless. (That might be due to the alternative apt solver though).

[Bug 1134492] Re: xserver-xorg-lts-quantal breaks Kubuntu

2013-04-13 Thread Malte S. Stretz
This is actually caused by multiarch packages present. I fixed this by
manually removing the google-earth-stable:i386, teamviewer7:stable and
libgl1-*:i368 packages which also removed wine1.4 (which depends on
wine1.4:i386) and skype:i386.

Even though this is a bug in the default apt solver (which goes and
tries to drop a lot of KDE and other packages), this should be
documented on the page mentioned on the initial report.

The aspcud solver helped a lot in solving this:

root@slpn-nb-mss:~# apt-get install --no-remove xserver-xorg-lts-quantal
--solver aspcud

[Bug 1131172] Re: ifenslave needs a man(5) page describing the /etc/network/interfaces options

2013-03-26 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Use the source Luke :)

Seriously, I agree, I always peek at the ifup-Script to get the
canonical documentation which is not intuitive.

I can confirm that it looks like this doesn't work (anymore) in precise.

[Bug 1131172] [NEW] ifenslave needs a man(5) page describing the /etc/network/interfaces options

2013-02-21 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

There are the man pages interfaces(5), vlan-interfaces(5), bridge-utils-
interfaces(5) and maybe others (that's what I get fron a `ls
/usr/share/man/man5/*interfaces*` on my system). But there's no
ifenslave-interfaces(5) describing the bond-* options.

The only canonical documentation seem to be the ifupdown scripts and the
examples and Google. This should be fixed :)

It (looks like it) works for me. For a while already and nobody
complained. Digest::SHA ist shipped with perl 5.14.2-6ubuntu2.2 (which
Replaces libdigest-sha-perl). Maybe I did some magic to fix something up
but can't really remember.

[Bug 1118136] [NEW] Please update the description of the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications Add-on

2013-02-07 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

In the Firefox Add-on Manager I have the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications
which is just described as Ubuntu Firefox Pack. This description is
not very helpful since I want to know what it actually does and if it
might clash with some other extensions I have installed because they
touch the same area. And what I might miss out if I disable it.

The package description is a bit more helpful and says:
Integrates the browser with Ubuntu to:
  * Enable searching for missing plugins from Ubuntu software catalog
  * Add the following options to the Help menu
- Get help on-line
- Help translating Firefox
- Ubuntu Release Notes
  * Set homepage to Ubuntu Start Page
  * Display a restart notification after upgrading Firefox
  * Add ask.com to the search engines.

It would be nice if this list of features was also displayed in the
description in the Add-on Manager.

jockey-text is affected, too. It looks like it breaks when it tries to

[Bug 1093013] [NEW] sensors-detect doesn't find fans on HP ProBook 6560b

2012-12-21 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

The fans on my HP ProBook 6560b are almost always running on full speed,
venting out hot air all over the place. The fans aren't recognized by
lm-sensors and thus can't be controlled eg. by fancontrol (see attached
output of sesnors-detect):

[Bug 1011007] Re: blkid identifies ext4 rootfs as silicon_medley_raid_member, breaks boot

2012-11-25 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Same problem here: After a reboot, Ubuntu 12.04 didn't mount the rootfs
properly anymore, dropping me into busybox with a misleading error
message (cf. attached acreenshot). Looks like libblkid looks for the
magic number 0x2F00 at byte 96 of the last (partial) 512 byte block
of the device. Unfortunatley whatever file was written there was full of
this magic number:

[Bug 1011007] Re: blkid identifies ext4 rootfs as silicon_medley_raid_member, breaks boot

2012-11-25 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Since this was a LVM device which was misidentified, I fixed it without
fiddling with the file system by extending the device slightly:

root@Otherland:~# lvextend -L +512B /dev/mapper/hd-sys
Rounding up size to full physical extent 4.00 MiB
Extending logical volume sys to 13.18 GiB
  Logical volume sys successfully resized
root@Otherland:~# blkid -p /dev/mapper/hd-sys
/dev/mapper/hd-sys: LABEL=root UUID=55c1f04f-4e15-48e4-9f21-8f71657d0682
VERSION=1.0 TYPE=ext4 USAGE=filesystem

2012-08-02 Thread Malte S. Stretz
Public bug reported:

This is the same as bug 445595 which is marked closed: smbclient can't
access files shared by Apple's Time Capsule because the server doesn't
support the echo request:

stretz@slpn-nb-mss:~$ smbclient //timecapsule/HD1
Enter stretz's password:

smb: \ SMBecho failed. Maybe server has closed the connection

This is also reported in the Samba Bugzilla and marked as fixed over

[Bug 990326] Re: Screen brightness setting has no affect on HP ProBook 6560b

2012-05-28 Thread Malte S. Stretz
This isn't a bug in gnome-power-manager since it affects KDE as well.
Actually, it looks like the kernel (?) ignores whatever is written to
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness; I can set it to zero and
still no change:

$ ls /sys/class/backlight/
acpi_video0
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
20
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
20
$ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
0
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
0

** Summary changed:

- Screen brightness setting has no affect
+ Screen brightness setting has no affect on HP ProBook 6560b

** Package changed: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu)

I tried to boot with acpi_backlight=vendor which didn't help; now there
aren'd any backlights registered in /sys/class/backlight at all.
