[Bug 1577926] Re: apt-key works fine, yet apt fails with "Could not execute 'apt-key'"

2016-10-02 Thread MarcS
I finally got this fixed on my box: It seems like the linux-image-
generic metapackage was removed for some reason and the box had a
completely outdated kernel. I downloaded current linux-image-*-generic
and linux-image-extra-*-generic from packages.ubuntu.com, installed them
manually via dpkg and rebooted. apt-get update now works again.

[Bug 1616334] [NEW] Firejail symlink for firefox does not work because of wrapper script

2016-08-24 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

When setting up a jailed firefox via `ln -s /usr/bin/firejail
/usr/local/bin/firefox`, firefox fails to start with a "profile
inaccessible" message.

This happens because /usr/bin/firefox is a symlink to
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox.sh, which makes firejail look for
"firefox.sh.profile", which is not available. Firejail then uses a
default profile which is too restrictive for firefox.

I have worked around this by symlinking
~/.config/firejail/firefox.sh.profile to /etc/firejail/firefox.profile.
The package should probably provide a similar symlink in /etc/firejail
to make this work out of the box.

NOTE: The same seems to apply to thunderbird.

[Bug 1517901] [NEW] gnome-shell spins over sched_yield with 100% CPU

2015-11-19 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

The gnome-shell process gets occasionally stuck in a busy loop using
100% CPU for a few minutes. strace shows that it repeatedly invokes
sched_yield.

This seem to be triggered by opening (certain) context menus. It started
out in Eclipse, but now also affects the Firefox address-bar dropdown.

[Bug 1377673] [NEW] diff manpage doesn't mention --no-dereference

2014-10-05 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

I just spent half an hour
(1) wondering why diff doesn't have an option to not dereference symlinks,
(2) finding out that upstream has one,
(3) finding out that the diffutils version in trusty is recent enough to have
it, too,
(4) finding out it actually is there, even though it is not mentioned in the
manpage.
Would be nice if this was fixed.

[Bug 559894] Re: German spellchecking does not work

2014-07-02 Thread MarcS
I ran into this aswell on Saucy.
Some hints in the upstream bug report helped me to find a work around, though:
Use dconf-editor, go to org/gnome/empathy/conversation and replace the de in
spell-checker-languages with de_DE. Seems to do the trick.

[Bug 406397] Re: init: job stuck with expect fork/daemon when parent reaps child

2014-05-27 Thread MarcS
I ran into this again and found a new (?) way of fixing the situation
once it has happened that is slightly less crazy than the exhaust-all-
pids script: The /proc/sys/kernel/ns_last_pid knob can be used to get a
process with the correct PID.

I used
echo $(($n-2)) | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/ns_last_pid bash -c 'sleep 60 '

Where $n is the PID that upstart is tracking (output of 'status'). The
-2 is necessary because the bash process gets a pid first. The sleep
should wind up with the tracked PID and as a child of the init process.

Maybe there is a simpler way, but this worked for me.

Note that is a relatively new kernel feature. It works with the saucy
kernel, I don't know about earlier releases.

This is introduced by debian/patches/02.use-system-js-libraries.patch
which creates symlinks for the system jquery libraries but does not
expect this to fail.

This could probably be fixed by wrapping the os.symlink calls in
try:/except IOError.

Steps to reproduce:
1) generate coverage data
2) run coverage2 html - success
3) run coverage2 html again in the same directory - crash

[Bug 992174] Re: Blank screen after suspend/resume

2013-11-18 Thread MarcS
Re: Comment #5

I'm afraid I can't test this any further, as I've switched to another
distribution some time ago.

But if it's any help, Fedora seems to be affected just as well :-)

Wow, thanks for coming back to this.

It's been a while since I've filed this report, I must have stopped
experiencing the bug quite some time ago. I also changed to another
distribution more than a year ago (unrelated to this bug), so I really
can't say whether it's still present, sorry.

[Bug 1070677] Re: Xorg fails to start because of Radeon Issue [(EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version]

2013-05-15 Thread MarcS
Seeing the same thing here, on Ubuntu 12.04. Graphics adapter (lspci) is
Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 7000 Series],
xserver-xorg-video-ati at 1:6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2.

The start lightdm workaround works for me aswell, although I have to
*re*-start it, as it claims to be already running.

[Bug 1116731] Re: WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.5.0/fs/inode.c:281 drop_nlink+0x46/0x50()

2013-02-07 Thread MarcS
Bug affects me aswell:

Linux el-sv 3.5.0-22-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 8 21:47:00 UTC 2013

The backtrace is almost the same, ends up at inode.c:281 drop_nlink
aswell (triggered through rsync, though).

Let me know if there's any point to me providing more information/log
files.

I'm afraid testing an upstream kernel is out of the question for me.

[Bug 960022] Re: dicomscope fails to start with undefined symbol error

2012-06-14 Thread MarcS
Two possible workarounds:
 - Link libjInterface (part of dicomscope) against libdcmnet and other
indirectly needed libraries.
 - Manually load the needed libraries in dicomscope itself before loading
libjInterface in tkgui/main/MainContext.java .

I have not tried these myself, though.

[Bug 960022] Re: dicomscope fails to start with undefined symbol error

2012-06-13 Thread MarcS
The problem is - as far as I understand it - that some dcmtk libraries
(libdcmtls in the example) use symbols from other libraries (i.e.
libdcmnet), but are not linked against them.

Because of that, the java library-loader does not know it also needs to
load dcmnet when it loads dcmtls.

Basically, all that is needed specifying the required libraries with the
-l linker flag when compiling the dcmtk libs. One can use --Xlinker
--no-undefined to enforce that all required libraries are listed.

I verified this by recompiling some of the libraries by hand. Sadly I
have no clue about cmake and don't know how to fix the dcmtk build
process.

[Bug 992174] Re: Blank screen after suspend/resume

2012-05-01 Thread MarcS
Confirmed the bug with upstream kernel (3.4.0-030400rc4).

I should also add that this was NOT introduced by precise, but also
existed in oneiric and previous releases.

I was also able to verify that this is not KDE-specific (happens with
GNOME as well).

I was not able to confirm this with the proprietary nvidia driver, the
system wouldn't boot with it.

[Bug 992174] [NEW] Blank screen after suspend/resume

2012-04-30 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

After resuming from suspend, the screen stays blank.

Apart from that, the system seems mostly functional:
 - Keyboard input appears to work.
 - SSH Login works.
 - The screen backlight is on.
 - Switching the screen off and on again via xrandr toggles the backlight.

Restarting X or the display manager does not help.

[Bug 973432] [NEW] APTGETOPT setting doesn't reach satisfy-depends command

2012-04-04 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

The configuration file /usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc defines the
variable APTGETOPT which is used by (among others) /usr/lib/pbuilder
/pbuilder-satisfydepends-gdebi.

But since APTGETOPT is defined as a shell array and satisfy-depends is
invoked as a sub-command, the setting never reaches the command because
the shell cannot pass arrays to sub-processes.

A workaround for this is to explicitly 'unset´ APTGETOPT in
~/.pbuilderrc and to export it as a normal variable. This works even
though the satisfy-depends command uses it as an array.

[Bug 960022] [NEW] dicomscope fails to start with undefined symbol error

2012-03-20 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

When starting dicomscope, it immediately aborts with the following
message printed to the console:

$ dicomscope
starting DICOMscope
please wait...
Exception in thread main java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError:
/usr/lib/libjInterface.so: /usr/lib/libdcmtls.so.2: undefined symbol:

at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Runtime.java:840)
at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:1047)
at main.MainContext.clinit(MainContext.java:58)
at dicomscope.DICOMscope.main(DICOMscope.java:91)

What I've found so far is:

The missing symbol is:
$ c++filt _ZTI22DcmTransportConnection
typeinfo for DcmTransportConnection

Which is indeed undefined in libdcmtls:
$ objdump -CT /usr/lib/libdcmtls.so.2 | grep typeinfo for
DcmTransportConnection
  D *UND* typeinfo for
DcmTransportConnection

And defined in libdcmnet:
$ objdump -CT /usr/lib/libdcmnet.so.2 | grep typeinfo for
DcmTransportConnection
000d468c w DO .data.rel.ro 0008 Basetypeinfo for
DcmTransportConnection

But since libdcmtls does not need libdcmnet:
$ objdump -x /usr/lib/libdcmtls.so.2 | grep NEEDED
  NEEDED libgcc_s.so.1
  NEEDED libc.so.6

libdcmnet is not loaded when libdcmtls is, and so the start fails.

I have confirmed this by compiling the affected libraries myself and
linking them with the correct dependencies, with which dicomscope starts
and works.

2011-12-06 Thread MarcS
I'll try to test some of those kernels, though the crash only happens
sporadically, so it'll be difficult to tell whether a kernel actually
fixes it. Also, I'm using a PAE kernel, which doesn't seem to be
available in the archive.

On the plus side, the crash happened again when I tried to open the link
from #21 from the notification mail in KMail. So again while launching

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Launching Firefox (from the KDE panel) sporadically causes a kernel Oops
(Null pointer dereference) in drm_debugfs_remove_files (output is attached).
The system continues to run, and after returning to the desktop session by
switching away from the vt and back again, Firefox is actually running.

EDIT: The bug appears since the upgrade to oneiric, both with Firefox 7
  and now 8.

[Bug 363695] Re: update-apt-xapian-index uses too much CPU

2010-01-12 Thread MarcS
I'm experiencing the same problem on a Dell Laptop.

From the update-apt-xapian-index manpage:
 -u, --update
incremental update, reindexing only those packages whose version
has changed since the last run

Sounds reasonable, but is not used in /etc/cron.weekly/apt-xapian-index.

The attached patch adds this option.

[Bug 488698] [NEW] Task switcher leaves shadow on other screen

2009-11-26 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When using a dual-screen setup (KDE 4.3.2, nvidia, driver version
185.18.36, twinview) a shadow of the task switch panel (pressing
alt+tab and holding alt) is drawn on the screen the panel is not
displayed on. This shadow remains until the application underneath it is
completely redrawn.

[Bug 488698] Re: Task switcher leaves shadow on other screen

2009-11-26 Thread MarcS
As it turns out, this seems to be related to the dropbox client.

The dropbox client pulls in a lot of gnome dependencies (nautilus,
mainly), which seems to confuse KDE to some extend. The problem
disappears when I shut down the dropbox client and kill the nautilus
processes spawned by it.

I guess the best solution for this would be for the dropbox people to
make a desktop-independent client. It's ok if nobody here wants to
bother with this, feel free to close it.

Sorry for wasting your time.

[Bug 347662] Re: Unhide pidgin doesn't reveal pidgin

2009-06-08 Thread MarcS
I'm experiencing the same issue in Kubuntu 9.04, KDE 4.2.4, Pidgin 2.5.5.
When the buddy list is closed, clicking the systray icon will open the window
behind the other windows on desktop, thus obscuring it.

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] Offline Mode feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-07-13 Thread MarcS
@.cobnet, Kristian Erik Hermansen: I've had the same problem with the
disableofflinemode add-on. Though I could get Firefox to work by checking and
unchecking the offline mode item in the file menu.
So apparently the add-on removed the check mark from the item, but didn't
really disable the offline-mode.

[Bug 242181] Re: Power manager doesn't react when unplugged.

2008-06-25 Thread MarcS
@Yuriy Kozlov: Yes, it seems to be the same problem.
lshal reports the battery charging/discharging correctly, but the ac_adapter is
always listed as present (event when it is not).
Feel free to remove this bug then. (Or should I do that myself? I'm a little
new to this.)

[Bug 213128] Re: [Hardy] Guidance-power-manager doesn't know when laptop is mains unplugged

2008-06-25 Thread MarcS
Same problem here on a Dell Inspiron 5160 and Hardy.
lshal reports
  ac_adapter.present = true
even when unplugged. Battery charging/discharging state is reported correctly,
though.

[Bug 242181] [NEW] Power manager doesn't react when unplugged.

2008-06-22 Thread MarcS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

Since the update to Hardy, the power manager does not react anymore when the AC
adapter is unplugged.
Specifically:
 - The icon shows the Plugged-In-lightning bolt.
 - The tooltip shows Battery: Fully charged (even though the bar below shows
it's not).
 - No remaining battery time is shown.
 - The cpu policy set for Battery Powered is not applied.
(See attached screenshot)

Power Manager version is 0.8.0 in KDE 3.5.9.

System: Dell Inspiron 5160

Some more information:
$ acpi -a
Battery 1: discharging, 49%, 01:06:01 remaining
AC Adapter 1: off-line
