[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-12-09 Thread MarcelD
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578

David,
I have to disagree with re-entangling two bugs, which seem to be copycats (i.e.
displaying similar behaviour).

The blackscreen bug #546578 (duplicates #529882, #555298, #555870,
#557779, #570687) appears after a few user switches, which can happen
with only ONE user on the system. For some people the resolution has
been to apply xgamma… The bug has now been related to a fade-out
problem in the gnome-screensaver.

The blackscreen bug #573101 (duplicates #560911, #561538, #573101,
#574909, #577219, #578979, #585685) appears only with MULTIPLE users on
the system. The blackscreen appears after one user logs out, even from a
failsafe xterm session. So a change to gnome-screenssaver CANNOT be a
workaround for bug #573101 (the failsafe session does not run gnome-
screensaver) and is therefore not a duplicate of bug #54678. This bug is
related to the NVidia driver, which stops the active TTY from displaying
the GDM – LoginWindow session (I have confirmed this with SSH). The
x-update solution by Connie is the definite resolution for this bug.

I would suggest to differentiate between bug #54678 and bug #573101 by
marking them as copycats (not an official launchpad option though, but
references can be placed in the bug descriptions). Please confine
yourself of the difference by reading the bug reports and if so change
the duplicates as suggested above (I will not take the liberty myself at
this point).

Regards,
 Marcel

It seems patching with xgamma and gnome-screensaver is indeed a
workaround for a problem in the ATI driver. This is what I conclude
after reading more bug reports. I cannot be sure as I do not experience
this bug #546578. I do know from experience that it is not a workaround
for the NVIDIA driver bug #573101, which appears after user logout with
multiple users on the system (as described above).

  1) Choose another user in your FUSA menu.
  2) After logging in to that users account, log off.

Expected results: I expect to see GDM
Actual results: I have a black screen

Note: I can still press enter and type my password to log in. I knew
this worked from the sound of my hard-drive. To be certain, on a
subsequent test, I did ALT+F2 and ran touch testfile. After a reboot,
there was a file called 'testfile' in my home directory. But all this
was performed with a black screen.

  Hello!

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop (lucid) from scratch.
Then I've made 2 users. Then I login as one user and switch to the second
user using gnome menu (not gdm). (New feature in lucid).
When I do Log Out from the second user - video signal disappears and I'm
not able to use neither X nor tty to do something with the system.
I have Nvidia driver (version 173.14.22) turned on. When I turn it off and do
the steps described above - video signal remains, but when I return to the
screen of the first user - the brightness of the screen goes very low. (Fade
bug in Gnome?) And sometimes I even get black screen with lonely mouse. (The
screen is not unfaded).

Maybe there are two different bugs? With nvidia driver (when screen is
reset). And with gnome unfading when unlocking the screen.

  Best regards, Vladimir

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. While logged in as user A, System|Log Out username|Switch User
  2. Login to user B, ensure all is working properly and logout from user B.
  - screen goes black
  - keyboard no longer works

  100% reproduceable.

  However, I can:

  2. remote login to the machine via VNC and get a screen; however I then get

  2. Ensured that the problem wasn't related to gnome-screensaver as per
similar reports (purged gnome-screensaver, installed gnome-screensaver
2.30.0-0ubuntu2 etc).

  Workaround:
Remove nvidia-96 and reboot. All switching between users then works properly.
Reinstall nvidia-96 and the problem occurs.

[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD
** Description changed:

+ [Copycat] A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the Gnome
+ screensaver (goto bug #546578).
+
  Binary package hint: xorg

  Binary package hint: gnome-session

  To reproduce:

  1) Choose another user in your FUSA menu.
  2) After logging in to that users account, log off.

Expected results: I expect to see GDM
Actual results: I have a black screen

Note: I can still press enter and type my password to log in. I knew
this worked from the sound of my hard-drive. To be certain, on a
subsequent test, I did ALT+F2 and ran touch testfile. After a reboot,
there was a file called 'testfile' in my home directory. But all this
was performed with a black screen.

[Bug 585685] Re: Logout after switch user causes black screen and disables keyboard and mouse

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 573101 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573101

** Description changed:

+ [Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the Gnome
+ screensaver. (goto bug #546578)]
+
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. While logged in as user A, System|Log Out username|Switch User
  2. Login to user B, ensure all is working properly and logout from user B.
  - screen goes black
  - keyboard no longer works
  - mouse no longer works

  100% reproduceable.

  However, I can:
  1. ssh -X into the machine w/o issue. I can bring up gui's from the affected
machine (i.e., gnome-system-log, vino-preferences, etc).
  2. remote login to the machine via VNC and get a screen; however I then get
multiple tserver instances have to kill it. Remote login to the machine using
NX w/o issue.
  3. reboot the machine from the remote ssh.

  Attempts to resolve:

  1. Ensured that the problem exists with enhanced graphics turned off
(System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects|None)
  2. Ensured that the problem wasn't related to gnome-screensaver as per
similar reports (purged gnome-screensaver, installed gnome-screensaver
2.30.0-0ubuntu2 etc).

  Workaround:
Remove nvidia-96 and reboot. All switching between users then works properly.
Reinstall nvidia-96 and the problem occurs.

[Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD
** Description changed:

+ [Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the NVidia
+ Graphics Driver. (goto bug #573101)]
+
  [Problem]
Up-to-date Lucid with radeon driver. After switching user a few times
(usually between 3 and 5 times), the screen goes black with only the mouse
cursor visible after entering the user's password. VTs are also completely
black. Restarting gdm fixes the issue, and nothing odd appears in XOrg.0.log
when the black screen occurs.

  - It also happens with KMS disabled.
  - It also happens with compiz disabled for all users.

  [Workaround] 1
  Uninstall gnome-screensaver (see bug #555870 - something gnome-screensaver
does is triggering this X bug)
  [Workaround] 2
Blindfold: Unlock session by typing password, then press Alt-F2 (call
Run ... dialog), then type xgamma -gamma 1.0 and hit Enter
  [Workaround] 3
Update gnome-screensaver to 2.30.0-0ubuntu2 or higher (yet in proposed repo).
Those versions are compiled with disabled fade on lock.

[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD
** Description changed:

[Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the Gnome
  screensaver. (goto bug #546578)]

- Binary package hint: xorg
+ Binary package hint: nvidia-graphics-drivers

[Bug 560911] Re: Switch user - Log out - Black display until reboot

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD

[Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the Gnome
  screensaver. (goto bug #546578)]

- Binary package hint: gnome-session
+ Binary package hint: nvidia-graphics-drivers

  To reproduce:

  1) Choose another user in your FUSA menu.
  2) After logging in to that users account, log off.

Expected results: I expect to see GDM
Actual results: I have a black screen

Note: I can still press enter and type my password to log in. I knew
this worked from the sound of my hard-drive. To be certain, on a
subsequent test, I did ALT+F2 and ran touch testfile. After a reboot,
there was a file called 'testfile' in my home directory. But all this
was performed with a black screen.

[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users

2010-11-25 Thread MarcelD
Sorry for the many updates. I have read a few bug reports, initially
thinking my problem had to do with the gnome-screensaver. Now I can
confirm I had the same problem with my NVidia driver. I have an NVidia
Geforce4 MX 4000 graphics card and the 96.43.17 NVidia driver installed,
which came with Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-26-generic kernel). I manually
updated to the 96.43.19 driver and the problem is gone. I made some
changes so that other people can distinguish the NVidia driver bug and
gnome-screensaver bug more easily.

Regards,
 Marcel

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-05 Thread MarcelD
Hi.
I do this Outputs as a Help for fixing the Bug. (cat
/sys/kernel/debug/usb/usbmon/0u and also output from /var/log/messages - i did
following: plug in modem, wait, unplug, wait, plug in, wait unplug)

I have Huawei e800 Express Card UMTS Modem.
The outputs are from the newest kernel : 2.6.32-rc6 - i did build it for me
from kernel.org

For other confused : fix it for the time of fixing the bug for you, as i did:
Search in goggle (in other PC, that is on line ) for some precompiled deb
Package with Kernel for Example: 2.6.31-11 amd64 deb, transfer it to karmic
system, install it with sudo dpkg -i filename.deb and after reboot use that
downgraded kernel.
If you have not 64bit system then repalce in search the amd64 for i386

I hope it will help someone..

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-05 Thread MarcelD
You need only linux-image. Yes, grub menu is the place, where you
choose, what kernel you wish to boot.

You can anytime deinstall this kernel with sudo dpkg -P linux-
image-2.6.31-11-generic or something like this. BUT You have to boot in
that case to other kernel, if you want to remove that 11!

If you write that deinstall statement , hit TAB key after ..2.6.31
System will fill in the rest of the line, if this is unique Package in
database.

I plan to wait the fix - so I will install new kernels and fixes as they come.
If they not works, i will boot again from GRUB menu into 11, deinstall the
newest kernel (because i won't use it and also to gain place in /boot dir)
If it will be fixed in newest kernel/Updates, I deinstall that 11 kernel away..
