Hi all, I suffered from the same problem and can confirm, that the problem does also affect external DVD burners. I tested on two machines. One is equipped with an external USB Blu-Ray burner and one with an external USB DVD burner. Going back to kernel 4.4.0-97-generic made both drives work again. I didn't yet find enough time to test with the most recent mainline kernel.
