After upgrading to 16.04, I had no access to wifi. It only worked as
root. I fixed it by adding my user to the new "systemd-network" group.

The existing users (or those in group netdev) should be automatically be
added to "systemd-network" group during upgrade.

 it. People buy PCs with Windows because they know it and expect it to work

 *In the last years a lot of people have switched from PCs to Macs. This
 was a lost opportunity for GNU/Linux. But it is not too late.


Add to this that it must at least support the latest LTS. My Dell M4800 is
still only supporting 12.04.x (which has issues solved in later versions,
but might never be backported) even though 14.04 LTS is there.

No, I installed version 349.16 using xorg-edgers, but it did not change

I already did try the resume-track debugging procedure, but it gave
nothing, so I guess the problem here is not the resume process, but the
turning in screen process.

  When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by timeout,
  the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power button, it
  does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).
  
  In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a terminal
  console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does not seem to
  work anymore.
  
  The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
  (booted with nomodeset, but not done any configuration of the screen).

When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by timeout,
the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power button, it
does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).

In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a terminal
console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does not seem to
work anymore.

The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
(booted with nomodeset, but not done any configuration of the screen).

I opened a new bug report #1400235 for my particular hardware. Also, the
problem is is present in todays Vivid daily image (booted with
nomodeset).
