[Bug 1244237] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Unity desktop background smears when dragging windows
Just a quick update. I had a couple of days last week where I didn't have this problem. However, I do have it this morning and I have rebooted (actually shut down and booted) literally about 6 times and get the problem each time. Am thinking of upgrading to 13.10. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244237 Title: Ubuntu 13.04 Unity desktop background smears when dragging windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1244237/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1244237] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 Unity desktop background smears when dragging windows
It's now Thursday morning and I worked at home yesterday. When I powered on my work PC this morning I did not have the problem, though my desktop background is blank/black (it should be an image). I checked my mail and opened Firefox, and periodically checked my desktop and all was fine - no smearing. Then I opened Nemo and the smearing started right away. The reason I mention the bit about working at home yesterday is that I'm pretty sure that if I reboot (even shutdown and boot), I will get the smearing straight away even without starting Nemo. It only seems to be smear free if my PC is powered off at least over night. I doesn't make sense to me but there it is.
Mmm, I have 12.04 at home on my laptop and have not had the problem, I will check and see that kernel level it is, though I normally apply updates when they are offered. I have experimented a little more today. I powered off and waited a few minutes, then on again and no smearing, even having started Nemo. And I even got my desktop image. About an hour ago Evolution got stuck so I closed all my apps, logged out and back in again and got smearing. I can tell because the Unity side bar and edges of the screen sometime have a line around or at one edge. Just now I powered off again, and went to make coffee. When I came back I switched on again and no smearing (but no desktop image, just black). Let me just start Nemo ... argh, smearing is back! Still not convinced it has anything to do with Nemo though.
It is Monday morning and I have just started my PC. The desktop came up as a blue gradient which is what I set it to as part of my testing last week - rather than just a black background. I then opened Evolution and moved the window about - no smearing! I then opened Firefox and did a few things then opened Nemo then I moved the Nemo window and noticed that it was smearing again (not blaming Nemo by the way). All very strange. My desktop background is black now too. It seems like everything is fine initially then after a while is goes wrong. Perhaps some kind of server is failing or something like that.
I booted my PC this morning and I didn't have the problem! Of course I didn't leave it like that but decided to fiddle with it. So, I went into CCSM and re-enabled 'Animations' and 'Fading Windows' and the problem re-emerged. I logged out and in again, but still have the problem.
[Bug 1244237] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.04 Unity desktop background smears when dragging windows
Public bug reported: In the last week I have found that my desktop background is not refreshed when I drag windows across the screen. This also happens when windows are minimised or closed. It is especially noticeable when compiz animations are used as the window shrink/blur remains on areas of the screen where only the background shows. It has been reported on AskUbuntu with the title of 'Unity desktop smears (doesn't refresh) and shows no wallpaper' and one contributor says it doesn't happen with Cinnamon (though their post was deleted as not being an answer, as was mine). My wallpaper does not show either, even after I changed it, and it used to. My hardware it AMD A10-5700 with 7660D graphics on Ubuntu 13.04 with latest updates. I am using the fglrx-updates driver. Others (on AskUbuntu) tried different graphics drivers but it didn't help. I have not tried with 13.10. Screen shot attached. Thanks. After some further reflection I wondered about the version of winbind in each case, this is the result: Ubuntu 13.04 (not working): winbind/raring uptodate 2:3.6.9-1ubuntu1 Debian Wheezy 7.1 (working): winbind/wheezy uptodate 2:3.6.6-6 So maybe the Ubuntu version has been (in this respect at least) negatively enhanced. [Bug 1174328] Re: mount error(28): No space left on device - not true
After a bit more investigation (whilst setting up a new server) with Lubuntu 13.04 and later with Debian Wheezy 7.1 I have found that Debian Wheezy works okay: Ubuntu 12.04: cifs-utils/precise-updates uptodate 2:5.1-1ubuntu2 - this version seems to work. Lubuntu 13.04: cifs-utils/raring uptodate 2:5.5-1ubuntu2 - alas this does not appear to work! Debian Wheezy 7.1: cifs-utils/wheezy uptodate 2:5.5-1 - this version seems to work. So Wheezy seems to have the same version of cifs-utils that L/Ubuntu 13.04 has, but only the former works. does anyone have any idea what may be going on, or how we may find out? In addition, I also tried to connect Lubuntu 13.04 to a Synology DS411J NAS box. I was unable to and kept getting a Permission Denied (13) error. It works fine with Ubuntu 12.04. I'm pretty certain my credentials were correct and I tried very many times. [Bug 1174328] Re: mount error(28): No space left on device - not true
Hi Yohann, Thanks for the support - nice to know I am not alone! You didn't say which version of OS/400 you were using. It might help to know that as things might be better on V610 or V710, or then again, maybe not. It would be nice if perhaps the IBM i team could allocate some resource, even a little, for testing OS/400 with Ubuntu. You can only ask ... On a different point, which might help someone somewhere, I commented at the end of my initial post about having problems with the new gvfs path name and Java programs. I have now investigated fully and solved the problem, which turned out to be my fault - kind of. What I do is to put my jar files in one directory and other files (settings, logs etc.) in other directories at the same level. So I get the resource name of a class I know, and that give me the path to it, which in turn helps me find the other directories. The problem comes in that the getResource(class_name) API returns a URL escaped string, so the equals signs (=) in the gvfs path become %3d, which in turn means that when I try to subsequently use the path, directories and files are not found. The solution was simple, I just added a URLDecoder.decode(class_file,UTF-8) after it to get back the original path name. My grumble of course is that it really is best to keep things simple, and not put 'unpleasent' characters in path names! [Bug 1174328] [NEW] mount error(28): No space left on device - not true
Public bug reported: I have an fstab entry on Ubuntu 1204 which works just fine: //gbabcxyz/share1 /mnt/share1 cifs users,auto,credentials=/home/me/creds.txt,noexec,noperm 0 0 The share is actually to an IBM iSeries server V540. I have tried the same today with Ubuntu 1304 (stable release, just downloaded) and when I do: sudo mount //gbabcxyz/share1 I get: mount error(28): No space left on device There is space. I can successfully access this share using the normal .gvfs method via Nautilus. I have tried on two different 13.04 installations now, one a real PC, the other a Virtual Box machine (this one), both with the same result. It works fine on several 12.04 PCs. I have to install cifs-utils first in all cases. dmesg say this: [ 627.506936] FS-Cache: Loaded [ 627.685156] FS-Cache: Netfs 'cifs' registered for caching [ 627.685833] Key type cifs.spnego registered [ 627.685877] Key type cifs.idmap registered [ 627.879680] CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -28 [ 627.879940] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -28 [ 4202.955751] CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -28 [ 4202.955954] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -28 Same thing when booting. This is important to me because since 12.10 the .gvfs name name for a share has become very long and complicated. I sometimes have to use the path in a shell for some work I do. The complex name does work okay but we also have a Java program that builds a classpath and executes another Java program and this seems to fail with the complex path name. I have not investigated fully yet. The fstab method is to avoid all that. I have not tried it yet on 12.10. cifs-utils is at version 2:5.5-1ubuntu2 Thanks very much. ** Affects: cifs-utils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1174328 Title: mount error(28): No space left on device - not true To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cifs-utils/+bug/1174328/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 890647] [NEW] .gvfs: Transport endpoint is not connected
Public bug reported: I am mounting an SMB share to AS/400 via the GUI (gvfs). Then running a multi-threaded Java program to copy files from the AS/400 to my PC hard disks. The Java program uses pathnames to access the files on the AS/400, e.g. /home/me/.gvfs/dira/dirb... All this works fine and it runs for many hours (say 18+). Then the connection is lost. the AS/400 is up the whole time and appears quite accessible. The really strange thing is that the files and directories on the AS/400 can still be seen and accessed via Nautilus before and after the problem. What doesn't work is the pathname, so my Java program can't use the path, and if I open a terminal and try to cd to .gvfs I get: cd .gvfs bash: cd: .gvfs: Transport endpoint is not connected The only way I can get out of this is to reboot (logging off and on again does not help). As I have millions (not exaggerating) of files to copy a solution would be really helpful. I was using 9.10, but upgraded yesterday to 11.10. Both have the same problem in the same way.
