[Bug 1390354] Re: Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 as VirtualBox Guest disk performance drops with more than once CPU

2014-11-11 Thread Markus Fischer
I found the problem:

The stock Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 amd64 iso image currently downloadable
comes with a kernel which has the flag CONFIG_CONTEXT_TRACKING_FORCE=y .
Recompiling the kernel without this flag set or upgrading to a kernel
without the flag fixes the performance issues:

Multiple CPU, stock 14.04.1 kernel (3.13.0-32):

vagrant@ubuntu-14:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile bs=1024 count=500
500+0 records in
500+0 records out
512000 bytes (5.1 GB) copied, 46.6511 s, 110 MB/s

Multiple CPUs, recompiled kernel (3.13.0-39 ; but I tested this specific
kernel with both flag enabled/disabled):

vagrant@ubuntu-14:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile bs=1024 count=500
500+0 records in
500+0 records out
512000 bytes (5.1 GB) copied, 10.4548 s, 490 MB/s

It seems this specific flag has been brought up in another report (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1349028 ) and is
already fixed/soon to be released.

[Bug 833952]

2012-11-25 Thread Markus Fischer
(In reply to Ron Wolf from comment #28)

I've been using this dialog since , I guess, five or more years (feels
to me like I've always used it, don't know). It brought me great
awareness but also annoyance.

I switched my mentality: don't accept cookies, unless required. By using
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cookie-controller/ , I'm
able place easy accessible buttons which allow me to a) enable it for
session only or persistently and b) easily allows me removing site-
specific or all session cookies.

I don't operate on Dialogs with this add-on but only on the icons in my
toolbar. YMMV. HTH

[Bug 775916] Re: Cannot navigate with keyboard to application in dash

2011-06-01 Thread Markus Fischer
I am using unity-2d.

Using the cursor keys I can only navigate *within* the text input area
where I entered term, cursor down/up does not leave it and does
actually nothing. Cursor left/right navigates only within the text input
left and right.

Pressing enter always will start the first listed application.

[Bug 519550] [NEW] Black screen after upgrade from 9.04

2010-02-09 Thread Markus Fischer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.04 alpha 2 just an hour ago, the system is
inaccessible for me.

After the boot process finishes:
- the sound at the beginning is played
- black screen
- unmovable cursor in the center (and was movable on the first boot but not in
subsequent ones?)
- blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left corner
- whenever I press a key, funny characters are written on the screen; every
key-press and release generates (different) characters on screen (alt, shift,
tab, enter, a, b, c, etc.; but e.g. they do not show their letters).

When selecting the kernel from grub, there's no output with any kind of
information to me. There are only two lines presented all the time and
suddenly the screen goes into the aforementioned state. I do not see the
usual Linux boot up output.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
