This is a major improvement already and can also be used in Thunderbird.
The directory (on Ubuntu) is ~/.thunderbird/XXX.default/chrome, which 
didn't exist initially.

Would like to see a built-in complete solution to this for both Firefox
and Thunderbird.

I too am also affected by this (seemingly old) bug, on an Ubuntu Gnome
15.04 using the built-in dark theme. Some text boxes result in using
white text on a white background, since Firefox uses a mixture of the
webpage CSS and that from the GNOME theme.

Dario's suggestion above is sensible, since webpages were meant to look
the same, regardless of OS/System/Theme.
