[Bug 1963834] Re: openssl 3.0 - SSL: UNSAFE_LEGACY_RENEGOTIATION_DISABLED]

2022-04-26 Thread Matthew Geier
It's a bit of an 'own goal' if this gets marked as 'won't fix'. As students
upgrade to 22.04 where I work they will find they can't connect to the
institutions or research centre wireless network. They won't care that the SSL
change is protecting them from an old SSL bug, they will just come back 'it
works in windows but not Ubuntu'.
Central IT services who run the wireless will just shrug and say 'Linux not
supported'.
Need to make it easier to find how to turn on the Legacy insecure mode.

Unless like me, you have just upgraded your hardware to a Ryzen 3600x

[Bug 1721428] Re: Artful (17.10) Session logout after screen turned off

2017-11-27 Thread Matthew Geier
I disabled all gnome-shell extensions and my session gets killed if I turn my
screens off.
I have to turn them off, as I disabled the screen savem do to being logged out
when the screen blanked.

The only workaround is to disable the screen saver, which means when I leave my
desk, my session is open for any one to fiddle with.
If I lock the screen, the screen saver re-activates turns off the screen and my
session gets killed.

This not very convenient at all.

[Bug 1501588] Re: Wily's wpasupplicant frequently fails on WPA enterprise networks

2015-10-27 Thread Matthew Geier
In my case it's not frequency fails - it always fails. On 3 separate WAP
Enterprise SSIDs.

I understand that the WPA Supplicant people say this is a Radius server
bug and not a supplicant bug. That may be true, but there is little
chance of the offending radius servers on the WPA Enterprise networks I
need to use being upgraded until this same bug bites Windows and MacOS.
Until then as far as they are concerned it's a Linux bug and not their
problem.

[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-04-30 Thread Matthew Geier
This seems to be even worse in 14.04 as removing or changing the system-
ca-certs= line no longer works.

I can make the office WPA2 connection work as I have access to the root
certificate for it's key, but my Uni's Eduroam is now completely
unusable as removing the system-ca-certs line no longer works and the
institution will not give me the root certificate for the self signed
key.

(We only support Mac/Windows via the supplied installers was the
response I got).

I took apart the Mac installer hoping to get the certificate, but as far
as I can figure, what they supply for the mac is a script that turns off
certificate checking in OSX :-)

It's all very well saying connecting with out verifying the certificate is
insecure and shouldn't be allowed, but that just isn't a realistic approach.
I ether have to connect with out certificate checking, or I can't use the
service at all.

[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2014-04-30 Thread Matthew Geier
In my case I either have to use the connection with out the proper
certificate or NOT USE IT AT ALL. The powers that set up our Eduroam
refuse to distribute the certificate required. 'We support Windows and
Mac only'.

The Windows installer uses some package that installs a new EAP module
into Windows, and the OSX one appears to be a simple script that turns
off certificate verification for the Eduroam SSID.

Yes, not using the certificate leaves me open to a man-in-the-middle
attack, but institutional policy doesn't leave me any choice here.

[Bug 1104476] Re: Network manager cannot connect to WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 network without CA_Certificate

2013-09-05 Thread Matthew Geier
I just want to add for those trying 'random' certificates - if your school
can't/won't supply you the proper certificate there is little point trying
random other certificates - they WON'T WORK.
That's the whole point of certificates in the first place, to verify the
authenticity of the session. If it worked with random other certificates, there
wouldn't be a whole lot of point would there.

Removing the system-ca-certs line and restarting network-manager worked
for me, pending finding out how to get my schools certificate.

[Bug 874181] Re: brltty daemon prevents creation of ttyUSB0 device link

2011-11-08 Thread Matthew Geier
 Let's deactivate BRLTTY default

Please don't do that. It'd make way harder for blind people to use
Ubuntu.

But at the moment it's causing a much larger population of people have
their USB serial devices stop working for no apparent reason. And many
devices are implemented by USB serial interfaces, some people are quite
likely to have - GPS devices for example.

brltty should only claim the USB serial interfaces used by Braille
teletypes - although having been exposed briefly to this technology
(supporting a blind staff member), I can imagine many are just 'write
only' serial devices and thus undetectable. The modern ones probably use
the SAME usb to serial chips that other non Braille devices also use,
interfaced to the older 'write only' back end.

As it stands, a much larger population are finding their GPS logger doesn't
work, their 'ICE debugger' doesn't work, their home automation interface
doesn't work, etc, etc.
There are a truck load of USB devices out there that are implemented via a
USB-serial bridge chip.

The only compromise I can see is to use brltty during the install
process so a blind user can install and throw up a question asking 'do
you need Braille tty support ?' and hope most sensible sighted people
will say no.

Removing the brltty daemon fixes this. Unless you really do use a

If the software actually finds a Braille tty to talk to, it may then
leave other usb tty devices alone. not being a Braille user I couldn't
say.

I removed the vboxdrv module (rmmod vboxdrv) and the random freezes stopped.
No reboot or log out or anything. With the module in place the UI would freeze
for 10s of seconds every few minutes. With the module unloaded the machine has
been happy for over an hour.

What I haven't done so far is reload the module and see what happens.

I'm running VirtualBox from Oracle's repo and not the OSE version as
the original poster appears to be, but there may be a connection.

[Bug 659936] Re: 2.11.3 is unstable, use stable 2.12.0

2010-10-26 Thread Matthew Geier
Please do,
2.11.3 also will also lose caption data from older versions on 'upgrade' as it
gives priority to IPTC fields and JPEG comments over the .comments XML and the
2.10 series didn't fill out all the fields. So you open a folder full of
captioned images and have all the captions disappear, in my case replaced by
the type of camera that took them.

[Bug 584092] [NEW] Won't burn bluray (BD-R)

2010-05-22 Thread Matthew Geier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

Unable to burn BD-R 'data' disk.
Add files up to just short of 23.3GB capacity that K3B read from the medium.

Burn never starts as the 'Please insert an empty medium of size 23.3Gb
or larger' dialogue appears.

K3b's own 'Media Info' function correctly identifiers the blank as
having 23.3Gb of space available.

Creating an ISO image then trying to use the burn ISO tool results in
the same message.

Suspect underlying tool issue as other burning GUI's fail.

growisofs -Z burned the image, so not a hardware issue.

[Bug 45722] Re: flashplugin-nonfree doesn't uses the proxy debconf key

2007-10-24 Thread Matthew Geier
Have to add a 'me too'. Flash plugin downloader doesn't respect ANY
proxy setting, so the installer for the plugin just hangs and eventually
times out. I have http_proxy set in /etc/profile so every thing picks it
up. wget works on the command line.

If the flashplugin-nonfree is using wget it must be scrubbing the
environment first so that it loses the http_proxy env variable as on the
command line I can use wget and have it operate via our proxy fine.

Is it possible for the restricted drivers manager to detect this non working
