[Bug 267376] Re: [intrepid] Package OpenOffice.org 3.0 for Backports

2009-01-20 Thread Max Randor
I was using the OO.org rc1 3.01 from the launchpad repository on 32bit with
Nvidia drivers but it was completely broken. All parts of OO.org crashed on
startup.
I say this because this points to an interaction with the Nvidia drivers
causing the breakage.
I have had to downgrade to the 2.4 version in the offical repositories to get
OO.org working again - to do this I removed the launchpad repository, removed
OO.org and then installed OO.org again. Hopefully I haven't lost too many
settings in the process.
I would recommend downgrading back to the 3.00 version as this actually appears
to work where the 3.01 bug-fixing release is broken :-)

[Bug 78367] Re: extend mosml package to include optional libraries (patch included)

2008-12-04 Thread Max Randor
It doesn't look like any activity has occured on this bug and so the bug
still remains in interepid.

$ mosml
Moscow ML version 2.01 (January 2004)
Enter `quit();' to quit.

! Uncaught exception:
! Fail libmgd.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
while loading C library libmgd.so

-

I would think that this bug's importance should be increased from wishlist to a
status such that this bug will actually get fixed. As it stands I will have to
uninstall the version from the repositories, edit the source code and compile
mosml from source, this is a pain. I would greatly appreciate it if this were
done, especially since the patch has already been written and just needs to be
used.
Thank You.

2008-10-30 Thread Max Randor
I am still experiencing this problem, I have experienced this problem since I
first upgraded to the intrepid beta.
As it only says that it Could not connect to server, I cannot diagnose where
the problem more accurately, it is not in the firewall, and everything should
work fine if it is using http/https though I am behind a proxy so it could be
some kind of network issue but I just can't tell. Running totem from the
terminal provides no additional information.

[Bug 181550] Re: pidgin crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2008-10-19 Thread Max Randor
I am getting this bug when running pidgin on Intrepid Ibex.
This bug occurs before pidgin has finished loading - it never displays a window
or an icon in the notification area. This bug has occured for me since my
upgrade from hardy to intrepid.
I tried to use apport to submit a bug - but I think it was stopped by some sort
of firewall so the bug report it would have sent is attached.

[Bug 285146] [NEW] pdf printer overwrites existing .pdf files if another file with the same name is printed

2008-10-17 Thread Max Randor
Public bug reported:

The pdf printer automatically overwrites current pdf files with new ones if
they have the same name.
It even does this if they have different extensions.

These would all overwrite each other if printed to pdf.

This is true on Hardy Heron.

This is not a bug in firefox, it is a bug in the pdf printer.

I will try and point this bug at the gnome-print package as well. (not

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-06-02 Thread Max Randor
@ Richard Mayhew

That is most likely because update-manager etc a lot of RAM (not all at once
but they have a high change in ram/s)
Or at least my RAM usage graph wiggles a lot more when update-manager/ apt-get
is running so I assume this is the case.

High CPU usage + high RAM usage = stuttering - at least for me.

Try running some programs that take CPU usage up to 100% and then start
firefox and open office at the same time.

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-05-25 Thread Max Randor
I don't think it is Compiz as I have this problem and compiz is not
enabled.

I no longer get this problem while tabbing (even in firefox - this does
eventually push the CPU up to 100%), but when something ram intensive
(like hugin stitching photos together) is occurring there is lots of
stuttering.

I am still waiting for the new kernal etc. to make it into the normal
updates/backports repository - is that likely to happen in the near
future?

There might be something in Xorg - It seems to take longer to render
windows than it used to.

But you are probably right - It might be bigger than just pulseaudio -
but hopefully the next version of pulseaudio will fix the problem and
hide the other bugs until later :-)

[Bug 208786] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] openoffice.org no longer greys out save button after saving as it should

2008-05-03 Thread Max Randor
The problem was caused by applying a patch to the ubuntu version of the 2.4
release that was intended for the 3.0 release and has since been reverted. As
such the new broken behaviour will never occur in an official open office
release - a much cleverer system is being implemented instead.
It will only occur in hardy and some of other distro versions.
Are we stuck with this behaviour for the LTS? It being post release now?

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-04-04 Thread Max Randor
I was wrong

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio sudo apt-get install pulseaudio ubuntu-
desktop

Has not actually worked, the situation has improved - I did lots of alt
tabbing with cpu hungry programs running and it was fine. The problem
appears to not be high CPU usage (at least on my machine) instead when
there are large changes in RAM usage there is a brief pause.

At least I don't have the crackling and distortion I got towards the end
on Gusty :-)

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-04-01 Thread Max Randor
Following from Helge's comment I did :

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio sudo apt-get install pulseaudio ubuntu-
desktop

(ubuntu-desktop meta package depends on pulse audio so needs to be
reinstalled after purging pulse audio) doing this completely removes
pulse audio and its configuration files and then installs it again. This
appears to fix the problem with stuttering audio. Unfortunately I forgot
to test after the first reboot after doing this and so it could have
been one of the updates we have had since. Could someone else who is
having this problem please try and see if this really is a solution?

[Bug 149665] Re: when returning from suspend my laptop tries to hibernate

2007-10-23 Thread Max Randor
I am having the same problem except that since my laptop cannot hibernate with
feisty or gutsy Ubuntu, (It worked in edgy Ubuntu). And hibernation causes swap
file corruption I have to reformat my swap partition and 'sudo swapon
/dev/sda3' and so I have disabled hibernation in gnome-power-manager using
gconf-editor.
which prevents the problem reoccurring. so the problem with hibernate being
called after suspend is a problem with gnome-power-manager, since changing its
settings stops the problem.
However I cannot hibernate and so I attach the relevant log files etc.
Only one attachment at a time? oh well.

** Attachment added: relevant syslog and messages from 'System Log' program
and uname -a

[Bug 68085] Re: amarok refuses to play midi files

2007-03-27 Thread Max Randor
I am also having this problem when I tried to play a midi file I was told by
add remove applications to install amarok which I did, and it does not play
midi files when I double click on them. media could not be played or some such,
but in the program description it says it can, so one of the two is broken
either the program or its description.
type: audio/midi into add remove applications...

[Bug 64326] Re: beagled-helper loads CPU

2007-03-26 Thread Max Randor
I followed that link and installed, it fixed the problem as far as I can
tell, on coming out of screensaver there was just a little bit of CPU
usage in the past but not too much and not for extended periods, (though
I had excluded .exe and .jar files before I read to the end of the list
:-) )

[Bug 64326] Re: beagled-helper loads CPU

2007-03-26 Thread Max Randor
No I was wrong it is still broken, ubuntu edgy, installed from the
previously given link, came back after having the screen locked for a
while the cpu was at 100% and it was beagle-helper that was doing it.
