[Bug 1379410] Re: Please update digikam to 4.6.0

2015-01-28 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Existing patches are updated - need to be committed still, I will need
help from that - resolving other bits mostly having to do with things
being moved in and/or out of digiKam.

[Bug 1194351] [NEW] CU_basic_show_failures() fails to properly run tests

2013-06-24 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

When I am building a test for my own library, I notice that the test
binaries generated linking against the version of CUnit in the main repo
doesn't actually run any tests, but does give an error code which is
apparently detached from error messages. This is easily replicable and I
have a test program that works like a charm.

To contrast, I built the latest version of CUnit from sourceforge and I
did not see this same erroneous behavior, it worked just fine.

System info:

[Bug 244721] [NEW] Evolution will only synchronize contacts to Palm Centro

2008-07-01 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

With a Palm Centro smart phone, I have enabled conduits for files,
contacts, calendar, todo, and memos, yet only the contacts actually
synchronize. In the log files no errors appear, and I have verified
that there are events that should have synched (in the right calendar
Personal).

I have tried resetting my gnome-pilot settings and resetting my smart-
phone, and it still doesn't work. It looks like this is an issue with
Evolution's integration to me now.

I'm running Hardy Heron with all latest updates, no backports, no pre-
release.

going on there.

keep opinion pieces in the forums so that we can use bug trackers for

[Bug 211809] [NEW] Tilda changes current workspace when opened under Compiz-Fusion

2008-04-04 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

So I start tilda, and after a while I notice that when I hit F12 to open
tilda, it changes which desktop I'm on. Here's my config:

* Compiz-Fusion set up with 2x2 workspaces on a single virtual desktop.
* Tilda opens from the left side instead of the top. (I'll try to attach my
tilda config)

When opened, tilda forces the current workspace to be switched to a
left-most workspace, regardless of whether it's on the top or on the
bottom.

I suspect that this may be a bug in compiz-fusion and not tilda... or
maybe tilda needs to set a sticky flag to show up on all workspaces and
desktops uniformly.

[Bug 189764] Re: Running Adept Update Manager fails. error msg available

2008-04-04 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 48627 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48627

This is a known issue. Running `dpkg --configure -a` on the command-
line should help you figure this out. This has been a known and posted
issue for several months, and folks have been working to fix the issue.
As always, there are more bugs than there are people to fix bugs. If
you have time and resources to help fix bugs, please do. If you do not,
please do try to be patient as folks are working as best they can to
solve these issues.

You could have found the answer I gave you a bit faster if you had
searched for the error message you got in adept in the bug. This is not
a support forum, this is a bug tracker. If you're looking for forums
then might I recommend you visit http://ubuntuforums.org?

[Bug 79259] Re: several bugs with filename

2008-03-15 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Here's something that should help with the VERSION dying. This script
is a mess but this patch should do the trick.

This solution is just going to return with nothing from the
ConvertFile() function when this exception case comes up. It'll give
the user the option to skip or abort (with abort being the default
option) and it'll only die if the user chooses to abort.

[Bug 160467] acpid reports insteresting messages as my screen is constantly blanked

2007-11-06 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

So I've been having serious power-management issues with this machine
(S76 daru2) for a little while now, and I always wrote this off as part
of the power manager dimming the screen before. Now I'm getting the
screen blanking without the power manager doing anything, so I think it
may be its own issue.

Attached is my /var/log/acpid, and in it you will see that periodically
there is a report of an event being received. I have watched closely
and each time these 8 lines are printed to the acpid log file, my
screen goes blank until I move either my mouse cursor or hit a key.
These lines are very consistent, and nothing seems to be printed to
syslog or messages when this happens either. Let me know if you need
anything else.

Here's a sample of the log output:

[Bug 49635] Re: adept is _really_ slow.

2007-11-06 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Could everybody who is reporting this *PLEASE* quantify their report in
some way (preferably in seconds or in the number of beers they consumed
while waiting)?

Slow is such a relative term that I think we need to get away from it.
I see someone talking about 5-10 seconds per selection, and I haven't
really experienced that... we'll have to troubleshoot that a little
more.

[Bug 104182] Re: Adept allows removal of essential packages without warning

2007-11-04 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Actually, this article is kinda wrong on two fronts. First, the
assumption is made that removing a package shouldn't remove all of the
packages that depend on that package. If you remove ALSA, sorry, but
everything that depends on ALSA should also be removed. That's not a
bug, that's the package manager trying to make sure that it's keeping
your system in good working condition.

Second, the assumption is made that just because kubuntu-desktop is
being removed that every package included in that meta-package is also
being removed. This assumption is false, as if you remove kubuntu-
desktop as a side-effect of removing another package (e.g. kdm) only kdm
and the meta-package kubuntu-desktop will be removed. Everything else
stays put. This is nowhere near the issue that it is being made out to
be in this forums post.

Also, if the user doesn't understand what they're removing, they
shouldn't be removing it. Our alert to the user should probably say
something to this affect so that it would remind users of sane system
management practices. Adept is not the Add/Remove Programs
functionality that you see in Windows, adept is a package manager that
can manage *all* of the packages on your system. If a user wants
add/remove programs functionality, they should be in Add/Remove Programs
(e.g. adept_installer) and not in the Adept Manager. Using
adept_manager is a system management task that needs to be taken
seriously like any other system management task (e.g. configuring a
firewall, backing up data, configuring user access and system services).
It might be a good idea for us to stress that users only use
adept_manager for things where they're managing their system, not when
they're just trying to check out and/or remove software.

[Bug 153710] Re: adept_batch crashes if target package does not exist

2007-10-30 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Here, have a patch. This was being caused by markInstall and markRemove
being called on invalid packages. The simple fix is to add a
conditional around the calls to markInstall and markRemove to determine
whether or not the package is valid so that the mark* methods aren't
being called on invalid packages.

In this fix, if package ABC123 isn't found, a dialog pops up informing
the user of the problem and then exits.

2007-10-22 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Agreed, this is an issue that needs some sorting. I'll see what I can
do over the next week to get this one rolling.

I'm also wondering if this should be considered somewhat long the lines
of a security issue. It's not a big security issue, but I could see how
someone could present a user with a simple shell script telling them
that their script would do something like install multimedia codecs,
only to find out that it removed libc or something ridiculous like that.

[Bug 155681] python-mode seems broken in emacs22

2007-10-22 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

Okay, so if I just load emacs22, and I type `M-x python-mode` I get
Cannot open load file: python-mode.

If I `M-x load-library^Mpython` then I can get a python-mode that seems
to be drastically limited when compared to what folks know and love in
python-mode under emacs21. All that python-mode seems to include is
font-lock-mode (syntax highlighting) functionality... whereas emacs21's
python-mode had scope helpers and such built in.

I may be way off base here, but I'd really like to see the python-mode
that emacs21 come back for emacs22.

[Bug 58790] Re: kmix: dcop calls to adjust volume should affect user-set master channel

2007-10-21 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
** Description changed:

When the user sets a channel as the master channel in KMix by using
Right Click - Select Master Channel, kmix's dcop calls for changing
volume and muting should respect that. Currently, no matter what, those
dcop calls affect the left-most channel in kmix's display.

This is a problem for some sound cards, where the left most mixer is not a
master control. For example, my left-most is PCM, which does very little. I
have to set kmix to my Front mixer, which is equivalent to master. However,
my laptop volume keys still control PCM instead of Front, because (after
investigation) the kmix dcop calls kmilo uses are ignoring my selections.

- This affects both Dapper and Edgy.
+ This affects both Dapper and Edgy and Gutsy[1].

[Bug 139701] Under Gutsy on System76 Darter, battery state information is often incorrect.

2007-09-14 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

Sporadically throughout the day I'll notice eratic behavior from the
power-management software under Kubuntu (and I've noticed the same issue
on GNOME as well as KDE). Per the advice of #ubuntu-kernel folks, I
looked into /proc/acpi/battery and found that the battery is showing
information that does not seem correct. I've also noticed that in
syslog (soon to be attached) there is a keycode error message that I'm
getting whenever I unplug and plug in the A/C adapter.

Other things I've noticed that may or may not be related is that coming
back from suspension does not seem to work--it did work before--and the
temperature that is also in /proc/acpi seems to bounce back and forth
between a temperature that sounds about right, and a temperature that
doesn't seem very right at all.

I have noticed that this bug seems relatively similiar to bug #129388
and bug #116185. I do not know which version of the kernel started this
problem, it has been consistent since I got the machine and upgraded it
to gutsy (around very late August).

I'm attaching several files per the requirements of the Kernel Bug Team,
and also some advice from folks in #ubuntu-kernel.

[Bug 117363] Re: Kontact/KMail recieved SIGSEGV while deleting message...

2007-09-13 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
I've noticed some additional patterns here.

First, this seems to happen only when kmail is telling me that there are
more messages in a folder than there are on the filesystem.

Second, if you delete the messages on the filesystem and then restart
kontact/kmail, when you try to view the folder it seems to correct
itself.

My guess is that the bug is actually happening before the crash when the
index first gets out of whack, and then afterwards it's just crashing
because it's not able to handle an index that disagrees with the
filesystem.

[Bug 136381] Re: Adept doesn't show changelogs.

2007-09-12 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
We need to compare how adept gets the changelog to how synaptic gets the
changelog. Currently Adept actually just constructs the URL on the fly
and then fetches it via HTTP. It seems like Gutsy has a lot of issues
where this is showing up blank, but I don't know if that's because of
how the changelogs are organized on the server differently for
development versions, or if it's because the URLs are being constructed
incorrectly.

It shouldn't be too hard to troubleshoot this one. I'm the one who
implemented this feature in Adept, and if someone else has a chance to
tackle it before I have time to look into it, I'm willing to mentor.

[Bug 81073] Re: Adept should handle invalid repositories more gracefully

2007-09-07 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
I wonder if this is a libapt issue. If I recall correctly, this error
message is shown when opening the deb database (using libapt) fails or
when it throws an exception. Do we have any libapt automated tests that
would help determine whether this is an adept issue or one of its
dependencies? It seems like more and more bugs are touching this gray
area.

I would strongly disagree with a low priority here, as the workaround

[Bug 133857] Re: In gutsy, kontact now crashes on startup (SIGSEGV)

2007-08-21 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Okay, so I found a pattern, and a TERRIBLE UGLY HORRIBLE workaround.

Here are the steps to replicate this problem:

1) Make sure basket is installed. If basket is installed and normally
started up with kontact, I would guess that it would crash if you tried
to start kontact now.

2) Start basket

3) Start kontact

4) Kill basket

5) Click the Baskets icon inside of kontact.

6) Crash and burn.

My work-around is to simply start basket before kontact, and leave it
running. Normally Basket was started and run by kontact, and I really
miss that functionality, but this is better than nothing for now.

Did we forget to move Basket over with the rest of the last round of
updates or something?

[Bug 48627] Re: Poor resolution of database locked problem

2007-07-05 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Here's a patch for this issue. After investigating the work necessary
for this fix, I've discovered that it would be just as simple to call
dpkg directly rather than using another script to do this. I know this
seems like duplication of work, and I greatly apologize for this, but in
the interest of reducing dependencies and keeping things simple, I've
got this working in C++.

No matter which way we went with this, it requires some tinkering in how
adept initializes its connection with the dpkg database. Here's the
patch, and it could probably use an extra pair of eyes.

[Bug 123936] Re: adept doesn't allow you to turn off backport repositories

2007-07-04 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Do you know if this was the sources editor inside of adept, or if it was
the program that pops up to let you edit the sources from inside adept?
There are two ways it is done, and knowing which way you're doing this
will make a big difference in how we go about troubleshooting and fixing
this bug.

Thanks.

[Bug 123635] Re: Please sync adept (2.1.3) from Debian (unstable)

2007-07-04 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
As a contributor to adept, I would second a serious use of caution in
any sort of syncing. If we have a new version of apt-front to work
with, I would urge an approach of a very supervised and tested merge
more than a sync.

We do have extensive changes to adept including crash bug fixes with the
upgrader, the inclusion of the kubuntu logo for supported packages,
changelog viewing support, and quite a few more grab-bag bug fixes.
Some of these bug fixes have greatly changed how some things happen in
adept. The feature I'm working on now for fixing the dpkg locks is one
of the most complained about bugs and it requires some serious tinkering
in how adept opens the dpkg database for use with the adept UI.

Let's please make sure we've got a good reason for why we need to do
this. As I stated previously, if an apt or apt-front change requires
some updating of adept, I'll see if I can put some time into helping
after I'm done with the bug I'm currently on. I just don't want to see
us throw away a lot of the stuff we've got in there.

I believe one of the real problem is at:
 adept-2.1.2ubuntu27/adept/updater/app.cpp where we have:

 aptFront::Manager m;
  m.setProgressCallback( m_progress-callback() );
  m.setUpdateInterval( 10 );
  try {
  m_stack-raiseWidget( m_progress );
  m.download();
  m_stack-raiseWidget( m_commitProgress );
  m.commit();
  } catch ( exception::OperationCancelled ) {
  } catch ( ... ) {
  KMessageBox::sorry(
this, i18n( There was an error commiting changes.
Possibly there was a problem downloading some
packages or the commit would break packages.
  ),
  i18n( Could not commit changes ) );
  }

My feeling is that m.commit() make a new instance of dpkg installed all the
packages downloaded in m.download(). But when any error happen in that,
KMessageBox::sorry is shown, but I did observed that while it is shown, I
can see the packages continue to be installed in details window.

So if one would wait for the packages for being all installed before
clicking Ok, there would no problem. But if you click ok button before all
packages finished installing, adept quit. While quitting, it make the spawn
dpkg process to quit too, while it is still installing stuff. This make it
kept a lock on package database.

My suggestion would be to add some code to wait for the m.commit() to
finish just after the sorry MessageBox, rather than quit right away.

But I am still searching the code of aptFront::Manager to better understand
what is still just an hypothesis. And I am afraid to not know enough to
code to 'wait for the m.commit() to finish'.

I don't believe this is actually the problem. Remember, apt is still managing
the database on this end, so if there is something that goes wrong with the
package (and oh how many things can go wrong with a package) there's not much
adept can do to handle this error other than to actually tell the user about
it and quit. I don't think that locks the database though. Have you
actually had a package that locks the database in this manner?

[Bug 122968] Re: 404 error on retrieving nvidia-glx's changelog

2007-06-29 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Okay, so I think that there's two parts to this issue. I just fixed
some stuff where the package name was getting munged and I released a
patch on a previous bug (119089). This should be applied here sometime
soon.

Now, then there's the problem of whether or not the package's changelog
really exists or not on the server. We need someone to verify that.
Since the URL for the changelog isn't actually in the package anywhere,
I implemented this feature to try to generate the URL on the changelogs
box the best I can. For the most part it seems to work, but it does
seem like they're missing sometimes. I can't do anything about that
from the adept side, that would be something that someone from the
website team would have to handle.

[Bug 119969] Adept Installer review changes screen has a useless Details button.

2007-06-11 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

To replicate:
1) Click Add/Remove Programs in K menu
2) Select a package to install
3) In the View menu, click Review Changes
4) Expand a package in the list view
5) Click the Details button, and note that nothing happens.

This button either needs to be hidden in the adept installer, or it
needs to do something.

** Affects: adept (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 117363] Kontact/KMail recieved SIGSEGV while deleting message...

2007-05-28 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kontact

I had more than 200 messages after not checking for a while. I have
several filters set up for mailing lists, and I had about 60 messages in
my LoCo's mailing list folder. I went through them all skimming and
reading, then when I reached the end I hit Ctrl-A and the delete key.
Kontact then crashed with a SIGSEGV.

This is kontact/kmail/kdepim from the KDE 3.5.7 kubuntu.org
repositories.

[Bug 112068] Re: Feisty: Konqueror stops working when switching network interfaces

2007-05-03 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
I've been trying to get my suspend/resume to work again for some time.
I recently discovered that linuxant's driverloader (version 2.36) was
the problem for me on this 2.6.20 kernel. I tried just switching back
to bcm43xx driver in 2.6.20, and it seems like I can suspend/resume
again, but there are other issues.

All this to say that when I came back from suspend, konqueror wouldn't
talk over the network. Pinging worked, telnet to port 80 worked,
Firefox (both 64 and 32 bit) worked, konversation worked, kopete worked,
but konqueror did not work.

I didn't even change interface names. When I was under driverloader it
was eth1, and now that I'm under bcm43xx it's still eth1.

** Changed in: knetworkmanager (Ubuntu)
   Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed
